One way that you can avoid this is to precede the hyphen by an apostrophe - as you would for entering text that Calc would misinterpret as numbers. The apostrophe does not appear as part of the text in the cell, but merely prevents the interpretation that you are trying to avoid. Note that this technique is complicated somewhat if you have Custom Quotes enabled, since the apostrophe will then be converted and will become part of the text in the cell. Either disable Custom Quotes (in Tools | AutoCorrect...), or else type apostrophe Ctrl+Z hyphen: here the Ctrl+Z undoes the effect of AutoCorrect, leaving the plain apostrophe as typed. Another workaround would be to enter some alternative symbol to represent your hyphen and hyphen pair, and then to carry out a global replace to change them to the text you actually need - perhaps just preceding them by a space? [users] Maintaining macro compatibility between OO.o basic and VBA
At work, we have a spreadsheet that serves as a specification for the C++ product that I am working on. The previous maintainer of the spec implemented the math as forulae, and was very compatible with OO.o. I work exclusively on Linux, and I need the spec in OO.o. The new maintainer of the spec wants to convert this to be macro based (which is better than the old spec for a number of reasons), but he wants to maintain it in Excel because he knows VBA, and the spec will be sent out to other people within the company and to some customers. While we have agreed that he will also maintain an OO.o document, I was wondering if there is a good document that compares OO.o basic to VBA. My premise at work is that the document must be available as an OO.o document because Excel does not run under Linux. -- -- Jerry Feldman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Boston Linux and Unix PGP key id: 537C5846 PGP Key fingerprint: 3D1B 8377 A3C0 A5F2 ECBB CA3B 4607 4319 537C 5846 signature.asc Description: PGP signature

[users] Printing Bug
I posted this to the OO.org forum, but have gotten no replies. It appears to be a bug with Calc. It appears that one cannot print a newly added worksheet in Calc if the file orginated in Excel. Note that I have Calc set to save files in xls format so I can handle work files at home. Steve I am a new user of OoO, but not new to spreadsheets. I have worked a lot in Excel and have converted all my Excel sheets to OoO Calc format. I am having problems printing individual sheets in a workbook. Here are symptoms: 1-Spreadsheet workbook created in Excel with multiple worksheets 2-Converted to Calc and set program to save as an XLS file. 3-Entered Calc, copies a sheet in workbook to use as a template for some new data 4-Edited copied sheet and attempt to print 5-Print option is set to print selected sheet 6-What prints is one of the original worksheets, not the new sheet I copied and modified. What goes to printer is the worksheet I copied to create the new one. 7-This also happens if I just create a new blank worksheet and try to print it. 8-It appears I cannot print any new worksheet if it is in a workbook that originated in Excel. 9-I can print the new sheet IF I create a new Calc workbook file, return to the Excel-Calc file and copy the sheet I copied/modified in the old file into the new one. Is there some setting I'm missing that is causing this problem? [users] Running multiple instances of OOo for UNO API
I have read somewhere that the OOo API doesn't work properly when you have more than one process using the API at the same time. Therefore I have been trying to get a program written in Python to start up its own instance of OOo. I have written a little function that finds a spare port and then starts OOo listening on that port. I use the -env:UserInstallation switch to point it at a temp directory for that instance, then I use UNO to connect to it and edit documents. I have run into two problems when doing this. Firstly, I want to avoid having to have an X server but when I start it with any combination of the following flags -headless, -invisible or -nodefault, some of my code stops working. The code in question is a function to search for a given string inside a cursor. In most cases it does that by using compareRegionStarts/compareRegionEnds but those don't work for matches inside tables and generate an exception. When that happens I simply enumerate all the things inside the cursor and check if any one of them is the table associated with a match. Without the aformentioned startup flags, the enumeration of a test document returns 4 items and one of them matches the table I'm looking for. With the flags, the enumeration only returns 1 item and it's not the one I'm trying to search for. Is there a reason that tables are ignored/missing from the enumeration when one of those flags is given? Or is this a bug? The code for the search function is given below: def findInCursor(self, searchDescriptor, cursor, callback): Finds all text that matches a given search descriptor and for every match that lies within the specified cursor, the callback function is invoked. If there were matches then true is returned, otherwise false is returned document = self.getUnoDocument() text = document.Text matches = document.findAll(searchDescriptor) matched = False # Iterate over matches for i in xrange(0, matches.Count): match = matches.getByIndex(i) # Check if the match is within the given cursor try: if text.compareRegionStarts(match, cursor) = 0 and \ text.compareRegionEnds(match, cursor) = 0: callback(match) matched = True except: # If it's a table then we have to see if the table is in the # text instead (note, this should probably be recursive) if match.TextTable != None: searchEnum = cursor.createEnumeration() while searchEnum.hasMoreElements(): elem = searchEnum.nextElement() if elem == match.TextTable: callback(match) matched = True else: raise return matched The second issue that I'm having is that despite running (what I thought was) two seperate instances using different UserInstallation directories and listening on different ports, when one copy of OOo exits, it causes the next API operation on the other copy to generate a RuntimeException with message illegal object given!. How do I concurrently run more than one instance of OOo, or have more than one connection to the API? The second problem is more important to me as I can work around the first by using something like Xvfb (although I'd rather not). Potentially useful information: OS: Fedora 9 x86_64 Python: 2.5.1 OpenOffice: 2.4.1 (RPMs from Fedora repository) Thanks, David Roe

And what specifically you're typing, with the hyphen? I can't replicate a problem in this regard, so I assume I must be doing something differently than you are. What I tried is typing - test (without the quotes) in a cell. Your test is not what I was trying to do. I am only typing a hyphen, nothing else. The solution is to press enter before moving to another cell (although enter moves the cursor down one cell). The reason I'm clicking on other cells is because I'm quickly entering data into various places in a spreadsheet, and sometimes I want to move to another cell, so I click on it. Jason Interesting -- I still can't duplicate what you're seeing. When I type just a hyphen in a cell, then press an arrow key or click in another cell, it simply enters the hyphen as typed, and doesn't try to make it into a formula. Possibly it's a version difference -- I'm using OOo 2.3.0, on Windows XP. I've always taught (and been taught) in Excel that to make a formula, it always always has to start with an equal sign. And I had assumed (and found) that to be true in Calc as well. But possibly a more recent version of Calc enables starting formulas with + or - signs as well? - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Depending on which version of windows you or running simply go to the Add/Remove programs option in the control panel and remove the program. After that, if you prefer, reboot. Viola! OpenOffice is a FREE download from OpenOffice.org. It does not require product numbers to install or use. jonathon wrote: On Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 6:05 PM, Lorette Heil wrote: I've been attempting to open an email containing a powerpoint show and it will not allow me to open it.
