2008-10-13 Thread Jonathan Allen
Hi All,

I have this really strange issue with the spell-checker. Without me being
aware of pressing any keys to request this, the spell-checker seems to
break longer docements up into several sections where the spell-checker

Does anyone else see this behaviour and how can I stop it happening. If

 *Check this out...*

This election has me very worried. So many things to consider. About a
year ago I would have voted for Obama. I have changed my mind three times
 since then.

I watch all the news channels, jumping from one to another. I must say
this drives my husband crazy. But, I feel if you view MSNBC, CNN, and Fox
News, you might get some middle ground to work with. About six months ago,
I started thinking where did the money come from for Obama.

I have four daughters who went to College, and we were middle class, and
money was tight. We (including my girls) worked hard and there were lots of
 student loans.

I started looking into Obama's life. Around 1979 Obama started college at
Occidental in California . He is very open about his two years at
Occidental, he tried all kinds of drugs and was wasting his time but, even
though he had a brilliant mind, did not apply himself to his studies.
Barry (that was the name he used all his life) during this time had two
roommates, Muhammad Hasan Chando and Wahid Hamid, both from Pakistan.

*During the summer of 1981*, after his second year in college, he made a
round the world trip. Stopping to see his mother in Indonesia , next
Hyderabad in India , three weeks in Karachi , Pakistan where he stayed
with his roommate's family, then off to Africa to visit his father's family.
My question - Where did he get the money for this trip? Nether I, nor any
one of my children would have had money for a trip like this when they where
 in college.

When he came back he started school at Columbia University in New York. It
is at this time he wants everyone to call him Barack - not Barry. Do you
know what the tuition is at Columbia ? It's not cheap! to say the least.
Where did he get money for tuition? Student Loans? Maybe.

After Columbia he went to Chicago to work as a Community Organizer for
$12,000. A year. Why Chicago ? Why not New York ? He was already living in
 New York .

By chance he met Antoin Tony Rezko, born in Aleppo Syria , and a real
estate developer in Chicago . Rezko has been convicted of fraud and bribery
this year. Rezko, was named Entrepreneur of the Decade by the
 Arab-American Business and Professional Association.

About two years later, Obama entered Harvard Law School . Do you have any
idea what tuition is for Harvard Law School ? Where did he get the money
for Law School ? More student loans?

After Law school, he went back to Chicago . Rezko offered him a job, which
he turned down. But, he did take a job with Davis, Miner, Barnhill
Galland. Guess what? They represented Rezar which is Rezko's firm. Rezko
was one of Obama's first major financial contributors when he ran for office
 in Chicago.

*In 2003*, Rezko threw an early fundraiser for Obama which Chicago Tribune
reporter David Mendelland claims was instrumental in providing Obama with
seed money for his U.S. Senate race.

*In 2005*, Obama purchased a new home in Kenwoood District of Chicago for
$1.65 million (less than asking price). With ALL those Student Loans -
Where did he get the money for the property? On the same day Rezko's wife,
Rita, purchased the adjoining empty lot for full price. The London Times
reported that Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born Billionaire loaned Rezko $3.5
million three weeks before Obama's new home was purchased. Obama met Nadhmi
 Auchi many times with Rezko.

The fact that the spell checker is turned on doesn't mean a particular piece
of text will be checked. That depends also on the language set for that
piece of text. If the language is set to none, or to a language for which
there is no dictionary installed, then no spell checking will be done.

In OOo 2.4.1on Windows (and possibly earlier versions and on other OS's) the
current language is indicated at the bottom of the Writer window. If you
select a piece of text you can change the language for that piece by
clicking on the lnaguage name an making an appropriate choice.

It's possible you have a style defined that has an improper language
setting. Language is an attribute of Character styles and can be set or
changed there. FormatStyles and FormattingCharacter Styles (second icon
from left at top of pane). Select the style in question, right click and
choose Modify from the context menu. The language setting is on the Font
tab. You can also see/set the language from the Paragraph style for the
selected text. Same route but Paragraph Styles (first icon) insetad of
Character Styles.

Clicking the AutoSpellcheck button in the Standard toolbar several
times may not be a useful test: an even number of clicks should
produce no difference! A better test is to click it once.

Does anyone else see this behaviour and how can I stop it
happening. If it is some kind of strange design feature, how do I
get the spell-checker turned back on again in an 'off' section?

I think the button should toggle between on and off whatever the
condition of the text. Do you mean that the button will not become
highlighted when you click it, or just that the expected wavy red
underlines do not appear? If the latter, then you simply have the
language of sections of your text set wrongly.

Put the cursor into the text at a relevant point (or select some
text). The set language is shown in the centre of the Status Bar at
the foot of the window. Setting the language to [None] suppresses
spell-checking. Spell-checking also cannot happen if you have the
language set to one for which you do not have the appropriate
dictionary installed.

Language can be a character property, a character style property, and
a paragraph style property (but not a paragraph property, although an
entire paragraph can be given a language setting using the character
property, of course). You may have to change any of these to correct
your problem. Note that character-level language choice can be
carried over if you paste text from another source: could that be how
it got set? (Use Paste Special... | Unformatted text to avoid this.)

I trust this helps.

Scaling of the x-axis is only possible for scatter charts (xy-charts).
For this type you can set the interval in days (1.0 is one day, 0.25
would be 6 hours). It is not possible to specify 1 month, you can only
use 30 days, which may become inaccurate at some point.

It is also necessary that the original cells do not contain the strings
January, etc., but concrete dates like 01/01/2008 + a number format
that only shows the full month.

Scaling the x-axis when it shows categories (e.g. in bar-charts) is not
possible.

I suspect the servers are simply overloaded with all the people trying

Speaking of slow. Since my XP partition on my Thinkpad has limited free

Sorry, I forgot to add the question:

Does some one knows how to delete the links to other documents from a

 Ely.

Do you mean in a Calc document?

Yes, I'm talking about the whole calc document.

Do you mean for a specific Sheet?

 See previous answer.

If you call getLinkUrl() on the sheet in question, does it return
 something?

Well, the first time it returned the current file url, I mean the file
 where
the tests where done, instead of the remote file. Then I closed and
opened again the document and now it's returning just the path to My
 documents (very strange)

Better yet, if you call getLinkMode(), what value is returned?

 It returns 0 (com.sun.star.sheet.SheetLinkMode.NONE)

 What happens if you call
 oSheet.setLinkMode(com.sun.star.sheet.SheetLinkMode.NONE)?

It just changes the result of getLinkMode(), nothing else. I think it
establishes the mode for future copy/paste procedures. (Am I right?)

I present the functions I used at the end of this message, just in case
 someone else needs them.

While I was looking for a way to delete the links to other documents from
 a
macro, I found someone who wants to do the same: DDE Refresh and clean
 up
 at

 http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=20t=4076p=49673#p49673

Someone redirected him to Programming actions, where macro recorder and
 API
 fail at

 http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=22845postdays=0postorder=ascstart=0

The author of the second thread says:

 - begin ---
The following describes a procedure to circumvent this problem. The basic
 steps are

 (1) Create a TopWindowListener
 (2) execute the dispatch
 (3) the dispatch opens a new top window
 (4) the top window listener is called
 (5) inside the top window listener, the accessibility interface is used to
 execute the desired user interactions
 (6) inside the top window listener, the dispatch dialog's OK Button is
 pressed to terminate the dispatch
 (7) the TopWindowListener is removed
 -- end ---

That is a great thing to know. My problem is that I haven't been able to
understand the use of the api documentation enough, so I cant figure out
how to modify the examples presented there, to my benefit.

Um, you don't understand this method for the same reason that even advanced
macro programmers shutter when they think about using this method to control
OOo. I would describe this method as:

Write code that directly manipulates OOo's native Dialogs and controls.
Doing this requires a lot of information about these dialogs that is not
published anywhere. The discovery process is error prone and causes OOo to
 lock.

Yes, I understood that much.:)

In other words, this is not what you want to learn. This method is only to
be used as a last resort if you must solve a problem for which there is no
other solution. I consider this about the same as using OOo to write a
document with detailed instructions written on a piece of paper because your
 computer has no monitor.

Ha ha ha,,, a very good example... hahaha.

It is better if you are able to learn the native API. Unfortunately, there
are a few things that are not possible with the current API (such as
obtaining a list of available printers).

Based on your previous answers, I am pretty sure that I am not
understanding what it is that you desire to do. In other words, you have not
created a linked sheet, because clearly you do not have a linked sheet. Your
usage of the word link, mislead me (so to speak) :-)

Are you using external data links? I am not really sure what you are doing
 at this point

When I point to data from other documents, changing things back and forth
over time, I get a lot of rows at menu Edit/Links... that are no longer
needed.

What I want to accomplish is to press a button that copy the few (5) cells
with foreign data and paste them as text, and then delete all those links
at Edit/Links...
The first part because OO Calc becomes very slow with a bunch of open open
files that have references to each other, and the second part to keep things
clean and avoid the update links dialog that appears every time I open the
document

I couldn't open the mailing list guidelines now so I don't know if I'm
permitted to add attachments, meanwhile I give this link to download a 3
very small calc documents with an example and instructions.(A 24k zip file)

http://www.mitalteli.com/tmp/ootest_HelpNeededToDeleteLinksToOtherCalcDocuments-20081013.zip

Thank you in advance.

See bellow.

If you check the link mode, what is it? NONE, NORMAL, or VALUE? What
happens if you use a macro to set from NONE to something else?

It has a 0, nothing changes when I change it's value.

Some thing strange that I discovered is that the problem doesn't happen when
using dde formulas, for example:

=DDE(soffice;CONCATENATE(';file:///path/to/;$E$8);I11)

Where:
  E8 Contains a File Name
I11 Contains something like $Sheet1.$A$1 (The remote cell I want to
link to)

Every time the formula is entered, the link to that specific cell is added,
and every time the formula es deleted, the link is deleted automatically.
(OO3.0RC4, Win XP)

Either way... I still think there is a bug with the
='file:///path/to/file.ods'#$Sheet.$A$1 formula.

Ely.

 click
on break link button (or however is called in English) and press the

I have OO3.0RC4 on Windows XP

 To reproduce do the following:

 1) Create new calc document
 2) Enter hello into cell B4
 3) Enter bye into cell B5
 4) Save the file with any name, for example first.ods
 5) Create another calc document
 6) Go to cell C2
 7) Enter the = sign (don't press the Enter key yet)
 8) Go to first.ods file and select the B4 cell
 9) Press Enter

Here you can see hello at C2 in the second document

 10) Press Backspace key (to delete the formula)
 11) Go to menu Edit/Links...
 12) Select the link to first.ods file
 13) press the break link button
 14) accept the form in order to close it
 15) Go to cell C8
 16) again enter a = sign (don't press Enter key yet)
 17) again go to first.ods file but now select the B5 cell
 18) Press Enter

Here you should see bye at C8 in the second document, but instead of
 this
 you get a 0.

And the menu item Edit/Links... is disabled

I also tried saving the second document and what ever came into my mind
 but
couldn't get remote data from first.ods file again.
I found out It is possible to get linked data from other documents, but
 hever from first.ods.

How to restore the link to the first.ods document?

I hope someone could test it to see if he/she can reproduce it.

 Thank you all in advance

The newest Mac OS X Leopard update 10.5.5 causes problems with X11 and
OO.o 2.4

There is a work around for the X11 Time out
http://shaunmcdonald131.blogspot.com/2008/03/ooo-possible-fix-for-command-timed-out.html

Also you may need to install latest X11 from
http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/Releases

A simpler solution that I highly recommend is to install OO.o 3.0. It
does not require X11. It was officially released today. However, the
demand for it is so high that the servers crashed. It should be
available again later today or tomorrow.

If you have an Intel Mac, you may want to go for version 3.0, which does

If you have an Intel Mac, you may want to get version 3. Apparently an update
to the Mac OS causes problems for older versions of OpenOffice. I'd be very

OpenOffice.org is indeed free, if you download it from

charging for this package. Some who sell it on a CD provide a useful
function for those who can't download it. However, there are some

contact your credit card company, to have the charges reversed. Please

de richesses* with respect to would-be users that afflicted Mozilla Firefox
download site when FF 3.0 was released to the waiting world

You can get it from a mirror if you know where they are:
http://ftp.stardiv.de/mirmon/mirror-state.html
Look in ../OpenOffice.org/stable/3.0.0

However, it's probably just as easy to wait a day or two. BTW: If you
already have OOo3.0_m9RC4 you already have the released version, so
spare the mirrors the bandwidth and don't download the same thing again.

You do not give us a lot to go on. You do not tell us what operating
system you are using or what version of openoffice.

Assuming you are using some form of windows. You should have downloaded
an install file from www.openoffice.org. You then need to double-click
on the file to run it. It will unpack onto your desktop and then
install. You need to decide if you want OOo to read and write MSOffice
file. If you do then choose that in the install otherwise leave it
unselected. (This can be changed at a later date without an re-install).
Then once the install is complete you will find in the start programs a
OpenOffice folder of programs to use. If you have installed openoffice
3.0 then there will be an icon created on your desktop.

I hope that helps.

Any browser and search service should get you all you need, and more.

Hello James,
Wellthat didn't work too well. Once I unintalled both previous versions,
2.4.1 gave me an error message, something to the effect unable to find user
data. Before I panic, I'll download it again and attempt to reinstall. Will
let you know how it comes out:)

 Good Morning,

I'd like to uninstall them 2.2 especially because it's taking up much
desired
 hard drive space:)

Thank you for your time and any help you can offer.

How did you wind up with two versions? Installing any 2.x version
should remove any previous 2.x version. However, you can manually
uninstall either or both older versions, before installing v2.4.1. Then
again, you might want to wait for version 3.0, which is due out shortly.

[users] Someone's version of OpenOffice.org is involved with a Spam Email

2008-10-13 Thread timothy lungstrom
Below is a spam email coming from a company in
Panama with an IP address (no domain name used)
from a hosting company in the USA.

They are offering Open Office 2009, which is the same
product as Openoffice.org's product. They claim to have
some added stuff for it, but you have to create an account
with your email address to find out the truth to their claims.
I find it INTERESTING that their Support option will not
open a page. The frame that has the support info cannot
be found by the browser.

The disclaimer shown on the bottom of the page is colored text
of a color-type that you barely see it and it takes a real effort to
read it. Here is the disclaimer colored blue so you can read it.
{The format has not been changed}

Disclaimer: This website has no affiliation whatsoever with the owner of
this software program and does not re-sell or license software. All software is
freeware and/or shareware with the understanding that the user may need or want
to pay for it later. Membership is for unlimited access to our site's
resources. We provide an organized website with links to third party freeware
and shareware software, technical support, tutorials and step by step guides.

I wonder what site's resources could mean, since all of the support is either
listed in a web page that cannot be found, or by links to other sites (assuming
OOo's site).

I myself have a site that offers a link to OpenOffice.org, but I do not call
it by any other name and I specify that to get the software you must go
to OOo's web site. I just offer a list of free software.

I just think it is a bad thing to have a version of OpenOffice.org
used in a spamming system/email.

I called the Colostore company that is hosting the web pages
and told him about it. The guy at the Sales phone option
was the only one that did not go to an answering system, and
he told me to forward the email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
he would look into it.

The web pages for the store looks like a big company,
but the tech support option seems to go to one person only.

The whole think has a bad smell to it. The Company that
hosts the web site. The web site itself, and the Panama
daily-new-products.org company. Type in that domain
and you only get a comment about unsubscribing their services.
I had to use a false email address, instead of mine, with their
PHP file link to get to the web site for the Open Office 2009
offering.

Long winded, but I wanted to say what is happening.
OpenOffice.org is a great product, but using a version of the name
in a spam is a very bad thing.
