2009-05-27 Thread Jurgen Gaeremyn
Hi,

additionally, here's an easy way to find the number.
Go to the link given below, and perform a search... until you open a message
you want to get. If this message is on the screen, the URL will be something
like:

http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=users&msgNo=XX

the XX will show the message number.

Good luck,
Jurgen.

Re: [users] Anybody notice a spell check problem in Draw?

The button is in file menu, (F)->(T) I use local language version so
don't know what's the word in English.

(This is File | Export... in the English version.)

You will not see the red lines under your text if you disable them in
the drawing before you export it. You can do this by toggling the
AutoSpellcheck button in the Standard toolbar. The problem seems to
be that making this change does not affect the display (and
subsequent export) of the text immediately. It affects only the text
in any text frame that is currently selected for editing - that's
with the grey hatched outline but without the green handles.

All you need to do, I think, is to toggle AutoSpellcheck off and then
*double*-click each relevant text frame in turn to allow this change
to take effect before performing the export to .png.

Is this a bug? Probably.

I trust this helps.

Two steps to using OpenOffice.org.
1. Download it from OpenOffice.org
2. Install it.

First, you didn't have to purchase OpenOffice.org, as it's a free
download from www.openoffice.org.

As for creating a PDF file, there are 3 different methods.

1) There is an "Export Directly as PDF" button on the task bar.
2) Click on File > Export as PDF. This will give you more options than
the task bar icon.
3) Click on File > Send > E-mail as PDF. This will open up a new e-mail
messages, with the PDF attached.

Use any of these methods as desired.

I was sent a Microsoft Works Document today.
Open Office 3.1 on Ubuntu 9.04 will open it instantly on double-clicking

Open Office 3.1 on WINDOWS however was a different story. All that
happened is that the Filter window appeared, upon which (unless I missed
it) Microsoft Works does NOT appear and so it seems that the Windows
version of OO 3.1 won't open wps documents whereas it seems that the
Linux version will!

The simple answer to that is that most Linux distributions base their
OOo version on the GoOO builds from Novel instead of the "official"
version direct from the OO.o website. The GoOO builds include
functionality/extras that are not (yet) included (for various reasons)
in the main OOo build. The Windows version of OOo you are using is from
the OO.o website... so it does not include the MSWorks filter.

See also:

And for Windows if you want the Go-oo flavor of OpenOffice.org (w/ the
MSWorks filters..as they are) you can get a copy at
http://go-oo.org/download/
or the Novell web site...but Novell only offer a single very large
binary image.

I believe that these filters are also found in the version of
OpenOffice.org found at

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ooop
This latter offering a number of addons along with the baseline
application, pre-loaded.

By default, OpenOffice.org uses I standard ODF formats, such as ODT for
text documents. Those other programs may be expecting DOC, TXT or RTF
files. Just select the appropriate file type from the drop down list,
when you use "Save as". Also, ensure automatic file name extension is

That functionality shouldn't exist in the Windows version either. (

Dictionaries are now considered to be extensions, and have to be
manually installed for each language that one uses.

That is probably due to the absence of a spelling checker for the
language that the document purports to be written in.

http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/dictionary is where you can
download the official dictionary extensions from. (Note: There are
no dictionaries for between half and three-quarters of the languages
which had dictionaries for OOo 2.x. Furthermore, there are no
end-user friendly tools for migrating dictionaries from OOo 2.x, to
OOo 3.x.)

It's not about Windows or Linux, it's about OpenOffice 2.x vs OpenOffice

The "Install new dictionaries" wizard has been killed. Dictionaries are
now extensions.

You can add new extensions using the "Extension Manager". It's under the
Tools menu in Writer. There is a link there where you can click to
download extra extensions. But...

If you are using Ubuntu you can click on
System->Administration->Language Tool. In this tool check all the
languages that you wish. Ubuntu will download and install the support
for those languages in all the installed programs where it's available
(OOo included).

I have no access to a computer in english just now, so the names of the
menu items are just "guesses", translated from Spanish. I hope that they
are good enough.

This is easy when you know how! You need just to use the INDIRECT()
function. Use something like

 =CORREL(INDIRECT(xx);INDIRECT(yy))
- where xx and yy are the cells containing the names of the relevant arrays.

I trust this helps.

[users] Using names held in cells as inputs to functions

2009-05-27 Thread Mark Knecht
Hi,
I'm trying to build a simple correlation matrix. I have 3 named
arrays - Array1, Array2 & Array3. I can do this by putting the array
names in the functions explicitly without problem, but I don't know
how to do this when the name of an array is held in a cell.

Easy and works:

=Correl(Array1,Array1)=Correl(Array1,Array2)=Correl(Array1,Array3)
=Correl(Array2,Array1)=Correl(Array2,Array2)=Correl(Array2,Array3)
=Correl(Array3,Array1)=Correl(Array3,Array2)=Correl(Array3,Array3)

What I'd like to do is put the array names Array1, Array2 and Array3
in cells surrounding the matrix and reference those cells to get the
names:

   Array1Array2 Array3
Array1=Correl(?,?)=Correl(?,?)=Correl(?,?)
Array2=Correl(?,?)=Correl(?,?)=Correl(?,?)
Array3=Correl(?,?)=Correl(?,?)=Correl(?,?)

The tables above probably won't survive email so I'm not going to
worry too much about formatting. Hopefully the idea/question is clear.
How do I reference a cell that holds a name and then use the contents
of that cell as an argument to the correlation function?

Thanks,
Mark

[users] spell checking under Linux

2009-05-27 Thread Thomas Blasejewicz
Ladies and Gentlemen
Currently I sometimes use the English version of Oxygen Office 2.3.1 for
Windows (XP).
As a translator I regularly use English, German and Japanese.

For the last year I have been trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to "get
friendly" with Linux. Currently I have Ubuntu 9.04 installed on one of
my old computers. It contains OpenOffice 3.0.

Under windows I have learned, that you choose File -> Wizards -> Install
new dictionaries
in order to get new dictionaries.
So far, I could not yet find this function in the Linux version. Nor
does the spell checker work. A complete nonsense text is "checked" and
"no errors found" displayed. That cannot be right either.

I would appreciate, if someone could point me into the direction, where
I can find in the Linux version, what I am already using in the Windows
version more or less troublefree.

Thank you.

You can also refer to the Documentation section of the OOo Wiki:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation
This page indexes all of the available documentation in Wiki and PDF
formats (and includes links, where applicable, to the Friends of
OpenDocument Lulu store if you prefer bound and printed copies of the
manuals).
