You don't have to pay anything or register if you don't want to. However, donations are appreciated. You can have both OOo and MS Office on the same computer, however, when you install it, you'll be asked which application you wish to be default for MS Office files. This is a personal choice and can be easily changed later. I haven't used it on Windows 7, but I understand that it works there to. [users] Faulty MS filters in OOo
Hi, I'm using OpenOffice 3.1.1 on openSUSE 11.2. A lot of my correspondents are stuck with MS Office, so I'm having to save a spreadsheet I've created in .xls format. I chose Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP as a good compromise, but when I re-open the file in OOo it is in Microsoft Excel 5.0 format. I've had to resort to using Microsoft Excel XP in Vista in a VirtualBox VM, just to edit this one little file, which is definitely a sledgehammer for a nut, as the VM requires half my 4GB RAM to run :( I would rather use OOo on my linux box. Any suggestions? TO whom it may concern: It was my understanding that Open Office was a sort of stand in to Windows Word, in that I would be able to utilize Open Office spreadsheets similar to Excel and, in fact prior Excel files would be somewhat the same format that Open Office uses. Open Office spreadsheets would be interchangeable with Excel documents. Also Word and Open Office documents would also be interchangeable. I have spent a good amount of time trying to find out how this system works, and I have yet to even seen a document or spreadsheet or any other indications that Open Office is essentially totally compatible with Windows Word Excel. I thought I would be able to get right down and create my own spreadsheet or letter or other document. Instead what I have seen so far is nothing but text explaining various projects that users are engaged in. Are there two different Open Office Programs or am I missing something. It sounds almost as if you have been led away into the realms of release notes, hints and tips and so on. Surf to http://openoffice.org and click on the link that says 'I want to download OpenOffice.org'. This should offer you the appropriate software for the operating system that you are using when you surf there - I'm assuming from various hints that you are using some variety of Windows. When you've downloaded the file, double-click on it, and Open Office will be installed on your computer. Then you can test it. You can click on Calc and open a blank spreadsheet and do whatever you want, you can choose Writer and open a normal word-type document and so on. Or you can open one of these and choose File/Open and find a spreadsheet or Word document you created with Microsoft Office, and open that. There may be some slight differences, for example if you have used a MS Office font that isn't included in Open Office, you might see a close approximation from the Open Office fonts, but the basic rule is that if it will open in MS Office it will open in Open Office. When you've tested things, if you have any further questions, come back and ask them, and we'll try and help. It could be useful for you to tell us what operating system you are using. Also, ensure automatic file name extension is selected. You should also be able to open MS Office files in OpenOffice.org too. Have you tried that? I'm not sure exactly where you are in the process, but let's start with this. How far did you get? * On the www.openoffice.org website, click on I want to download OpenOffice.org, then on the Download Now! option (assuming that you are on the computer where you want OOo -- otherwise, there's a link that allows access to other versions). * You should now have a file (on your desktop or wherever you usually put downloaded files) that you can double-click to begin the installation process by unpacking the files somewhere. Follow the rest of the installation steps as indicated. * Now there should be executable programs available through an icon on your desktop, and/or one in your system tray, and a folder in your Start menu (or wherever your system puts program shortcuts). * From any of these, you should now be able to start Writer (which can read and write files in various Word formats); Calc (Excel types), Impress (PowerPoint types), and other programs that are part of OOo but not as directly interoperable with Office programs. By default, OOo uses the ISO standard Open Document Format (ODF) filetypes, but if you are trying to work with others using Office who need to be able to edit your files, you're probably best off to stick with the formats that work with XP. If you're just using the files for yourself, or can send PDF files, using the ODF filetypes is best. Note that Office 2007 sp2 sort of uses ODF filetypes, but not as they are known to OOo and other applications that use ODF. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.org

I had a thought. Would it be helpful to create an installation video for OpenOffice and post up a link on the front page of OpenOffice.org? - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.org

[users] emailing from a writer generated PDF.
Trying to find document or how to that describes how to embed a link in writer to Kmail, so a user can send an email to the address in the document. The document will be sent as a PDF. I know it should be doable, PDF documents I receive have this and work fine. I read the section in the documentation about hyperlinks and I think I have it set up right, but it does not get to the email program. In the document I have email: ...@ifiber.tv and when I hold the mouse over it I see: mailto:...@ifiber.tv?subject=newsletter Input x is receivers email name. Doing ctrl click as described in doc. does nothing. I sure I'm missing some parameter to tell writer to use kmail but I cannot find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
[users] Help! Can't launch OOo
OOo 3.1.1 from www.openoffice.org, 64-bit, installed on Fedora 11, x86_64. It was working right after I installed it. Now it suddenly won't launch. From the command line I get: [...@devil8 ~]$ openoffice.org3 -writer %U - copied and pasted from the launch menu properties /opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libuno_sal.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I installed it using the Linux RPM-based Installation instructions at http://download.openoffice.org/common/instructions.html, including the desktop integration RPM. None of the programs in OOo will launch - Writer, Calc, Impress, etc. All the rest of my installed applications launch just fine. I found a thread here: http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16t=10766p=53002 Which says I need to install openoffice.org-ure-1.5.1-9420.x86_64. I tried to install it with package manager, but got this error: Can't install pathopenoffice.org-ure-1.5.1-9420.x86_64.rpm as no transaction OK, maybe the package never got installed when I did it the first time and I missed the error message. Yet it launched after installation. I know it launched because the whole purpose of installing the OOo version of 3.1.1 was to get AutoCorrect working, which Fedora deleted in their version of the no-go OOo. Furthermore, in spite of the error message, looking in Yumex I note that openoffice.org-ure is installed, and it has an icon next to it saying it was not installed from the Fedora repositories. Also, I installed the packages from the command line as root, rather than use the setup script in the download file. I did so because the instructions at the OOo website said doing so would install OOo globally for all users, not just for me. I sure hope someone has a solution. I have a paper to write and no word processor! - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.org

I have a paper to write and no word processor! From further research, it appears that a link is broken. Unfortunately, all the fixes mentioned in the articles I am reading refer to OOo 3.0 and 3.1, and my 3.1.1 has a somewhat different directory structure. Plus, I don't know how to fix the link. Here is some more information: [...@devil8]$ locate libuno_sal.so.3 /usr/lib64/openoffice.org/ure/lib/libuno_sal.so.3 In /opt/openoffice.org3/basis-link there is a link ure-link. It has a big X on it, and in Nautilus Properties it says: Type: link (broken) (inode/symlink) Link target:.../ure I'm pretty sure that broken link is the source of the problem. However, I don't know how to fix it. It also appears that lots of people install OOo from www.openoffice.org onto Fedora and it launches the first time, and then never again. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.org

No argument John. I agree with the suggestion. I was just offering a pointer to some possible resources. Maybe one of those Youtube or other producers already have something of sufficient quality that could be used. Just a thought. Sounds like you have spent time visiting the website but have not downloaded or installed the program. To test this could you please look in the (All) Programs section under the start button on your Windows Operating System. If you find OpenOffice.org there then it is installed. If not follow the instructions you find here: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Installation/How_do_I_install_OpenOffice.org_on_Windows%3F All I want is to be able to write letters and documents and use spreadsheets that are similar to and are the same as my Excel files. You should be able to. If you have further questions for this list please put more information about: * The version of windows you are running. * If you have successfully downloaded the program. * Which version you downloaded. * If it was successfully installed. * If the OS shows it as installed. * anything you attempted to complete these steps.
