I
should probably reserve judgement until 29 April, when (I

Thanks to all for help.

Hi

do you know if the version provided with Ubuntu 10.04
will be the 3.2.1 "Oracle ugly icons" Version ?

I was very happy to learn that Oracle had
CREATED a 3.2.1 version based on OOo

and, as written under the "About" window, I'm

Will Ubuntu include this version as it ?

The version should be 3.2 as 3.2.1 is not due out till this fall.

In a word, no, OOo 3.2.1 will not be included in Ubuntu 10.04. It
will have their modified 3.2.0 OOo version. Besides, 3.2.1 is not due
out until next fall with 3.3.0 due out next spring.

In fact I forgot to mention that I’m not using the version of Openoffice
installed with Ubuntu (still at 3.1) but the version downloaded directly
from the Openoffice site (because I couldn’t wait any longer to be able
to use Opentype fonts).

Perhaps it’s a conflict of some kind between Ubuntu and Openoffice. I
should probably reserve judgement until 29 April, when (I hope) the

What a bunch of malarky about nothing useful and is so off
topic. Intolerance is alive and well in this group of
threaders. It's a sort of racism, actually and totally
uncalled for.

I'm using OOo 3.1.1 on Win XP Pro. The word count is correctly updated when
I hit F9 (useful if I have inserted the Wordcount field somewhere in my
document) or when I do Tools>Wordcount. This is true regardless of whether
Edit>Changes>Show is on or off. The word count does *not* include deleted
text. If I reject a deletion then the words in that undeleted text are
counted again by the word count. So it seems to me that any problem must be
specific to the Ubuntu version of OOo - are you using that or the non-Ubuntu
version? What happens if you install the one you don't currently use?

First off, I have never come across OOo Writer hiding text ...

What I meant was the text that has been deleted while the option "Track
changes" is selected. The option Edit > Changes > Show can be used to
reveal or to hide the deleted text.

It seems that if you use change-tracking, which I was doing, Openoffice
counts the deleted text as part of its word count. If I select the whole
text––i.e. the selection equals the whole document––the word count
sometimes (but not predictably) reports the correct figure for
"Selection" but counts the deleted text in the figure it reports for
"Document."

Yes, I did a web search but could find no information.

I have a text that has to be reduced considerably in extent while it is
being edited; I also have to use the change-tracking feature
(Openoffice 3.2, Ubuntu 9.10). I was disheartened to discover that,
after cutting unmercifully, the text seemed to be no shorter.

The thought then occurred that the word count might be including the
deleted words, and this in fact seems to be what is happening. I can
establish the correct figure by saving a copy as plain text (.txt),
confirming that there is no hidden text, and then I consistently get a
lower figure.

I later discovered that in the Openoffice document if I select the whole
text and do a word count, the count for the selection sometimes––but not
always––gives the correct (lower) figure, while the main count does not.

Is this a known fault?

I may be misinterpreting what you are asking, but the OOo Writer Word
Count gives two values - 1 for the selected text and one for the whole
document. What you seem to be asking concerns "hidden text". First off,
I have never come across OOo Writer hiding text ... and how would you
know that it was hidden? Second, although of no direct help to you, I
can confirm that this does *not* happen using OOo3.2.0 on an up-to-date
Debian testing, and has never happened on either Debian or a Slackware
version (8.0, 10.0, 10.1) using all releases of OOo since release
version 1.*

In short, AFAIK, this is a new issue that I've neither heard about
before nor ever experienced. Perhaps there are OOo gurus here who can
steer you right. I presume that you have attempted Googling for it?
