[users] Open Office for Mac OS 9.2

2007-09-17 Thread Lysa B. Aguila

Hi,

Can I install Open Office for earlier versions of Mac? The one in
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/x11.html
is for newer versions of Mac OS. We still have an old Mac G4 with Mac
OS 9.2, and I would like to use Open Office there. How/where can I
download an Open Office version I can use for the older version of Mac OS?

Thank you very much!

I doubt Neo wil run on OS 9. I've looked for ancient versions, but
don't find any.
I'm afraid there's no solution for OS 9 either in OpenOffice.org, or
in NeoOffice.
If it's a G4, why don't you upgrade to OS X?

This is not exactly what you want. If you want to use OOo, you can
install a Linux partition on your hard drive. Most major distributions
will run on a Mac if you get the PPC version. OOo come bundled with these
distributions as well.

I agree, Dan, this is probably a better option.

2007-09-18 Thread Andrew Fisk
If there is anyone from Sun keeping an eye on this list, how about
digging up an old version of Star Office for Mac OS 8/9 users.

I know it's not really where folks should be and on any G4 I would
think that OSX would be a better choice than OS 9 (as you can still
run pretty much everything in classic mode and migrate slowly) but it
would offer these users a choice they don't have now and even give
the folks still running on 68000 chips a solution.

Thanks

Thank you to everyone who replied to my query!

If I move to OSX, I would need to buy license? Are they selling this
for an old G4?

Hello Lysa

No, Apple isn't part of the free source community. You have to pay for
OS X. At the Apple site (www.apple.com), it sells for 129 $ and
following hardware requirements are mentioned:
*  PowerPC G5, G4 or G3 processor
* Built-in FireWire
* DVD drive is required for installation
* At least 256MB of physical RAM
So it works on G4, but I don't know whether your computer has a
FireWire connection (to do what, I might ask??), and more importantly:
a DVD drive (since OS X comes on a DVD, not CDs)

If you don't have the DVD drive (could be external I suppose) or the
money, I'd suggest you follow Dan's idea, and make a Linux partition
on your hard disk. You probably will need some advise on how to do
this, but I'm sure the Linux community will help you out. Linux isn't
as difficult as it may seem at first.

Good luck,

You will need to buy a copy of osx from Apple, if there is a "real"
apple dealer in your area, you might want to ask them for help --
you will not need to buy anything from Open Office.
