Thank you! I'm grateful for all the responses.

I appreciate people's efforts with the question of filtering the spam
messages into a separate file from RMAIL with SpamAssassin in Emacs

I'm looking for any outlying possibility of existing Emacs commands or
Emacs command macros that might go toward filtering.

For filtering currently in the Summary headers
I use the command Esc C-s Regexp to summarize by: debt
and use Esc C-s Regexp to summarize by: viagra
and likewise for some the other usual types.

I can't write dotfiles or write programs. I don't have other people
install dotfiles or programs that I can't tweak at this end and
usually I can't do the tweaking and have limited resources among my
friends and acquaintances.

Thank you ! Always grateful for your interest.

The question is what do you do with spamassassin headers appearing on

I added the question about how to begin to use spamassassin where
the headers are appearing on messages already to the link at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:SpamAssassin

The past responses that are almost usable were not because they
assumed a level of knowledge about things like procmail, dotfiles,
lisp, programming, technical jargon or social customs among those
involved in or around the computer industry.

It would be good to have ever basic explanations. Introduce
spamassassin to youngsters and oldsters unfamiliar with what they
may be using on the fly as it were. Do not put people in the
catch 22 predicament by referencing other material. It is
possible. It could be all encompassed at a more basic level of
explanation.

Repetition in instruction is a good thing.
Providing different kinds, alternative explanations for the same
instruction is a good thing.

Not everyone perceives, understands things the same way.

Even after trying to use all the steps suggested the question remains.

Apparently it is challenging as a question because those that
understand and try to instruct have not developed an ever more basic
response, have been put off by the failure of others to understand
them.

All this metalevel stuff is of course arguable. Or we could
collaborate as is the broad ideal of this medium and look into ever
more basic instruction for anyone who encounters spamassassin
headers appearing on messages in emacs rmail.

I remain, as always, advocating for the instructional methods that are
ever more patient with software technology users!

Re: How to setup Spamassassin. Novices with no or little mastery of computers.

2005-03-05 Thread Don Saklad
It's kind of an arrogant argument about not using something more
advanced than your knowledge. It did not stop a lot of people from
exploring things more advanced than their knowledge including young
aficionados of computers themselves. There are a lot of areas of
interest and knowledge. One can have knowledge of one area and not
mastery of another related area. A better idea is considering how to
better bridge what people with no or little mastery do not understand
about Spamassassin. Efficacy is also based on usability. Spamassassin
works better for some people but then if you don't figure out how to
use it it doesn't work better for you.

One hitch is composing the dotfile or dotfiles.

I would rather read about what people are doing to bridge any gaps for
interested users who find the Spamassassin headers on their messages,
only know a little bit of the jargon and arcane references in the
introductory informational materials, would like to try to use the
Spamassassin headers more effectively, and cull the spam type messages
from their email more efficiently.

Anyway if you can not get past someone's lack of knowledge, lack of
mastery you should not be replying on this point. I am grateful for
you interest and critique in the how to type of question in any case !

   urban municipal libraries

This page is dedicated to Don Saklad.

If you're a regular reader of soc.libraries.talk or
   alt.religion.kibology, you're probably already somewhat
   familiar with Don.

If not, perhaps you've run across a stray post of his in
one of the scores of other newsgroups and mailing lists
he's participated in over the years.

In any case, if you've encountered Don at all, you've
probably got some unanswered questions about him that nag
at you just a little bit.

   Who is he?

What exactly is he going on about in his posts?

Why does he continually post things in newsgroups and on
mailing lists that nobody wants to read?

   What makes this man tick?

This site will try and give you some information that may
just answer some of those nagging questions
   (though there are no guarantees).

To borrow a bit of phrasing from the defender of our
intellectual freedoms, we've put together some of the
"validly public" archived usenet postings that are freely
available on the internet, in hopes that this will paint a
clearer picture of Don than might otherwise be available.

Many of the posts presented here are edited for space.

All of the posts offered on this site include a link back
to DejaNews, so that the posts can be read in their
entirety, and in context if you choose to follow the
   threads and links.

We don't claim to be impartial here, but we've tried our
best to let you see more than one side, and make it easy
enough to seek out more if you wish.

What do we know about the man that is Don Saklad?

   The BPL Conspiracy
What's got Don so worked up in the first place?
Read about the BPL conspiracy here.

   Don's Other Interests
Believe it or not, Don doesn't spend all of his time
fixated on the Boston Public Library.

   Posting History
Don's a posting maniac, with thousands of items
available in DejaNews and other archives.

Here's a little look at his interaction with
  electronic messaging forums.

   Humor
Let it not be said that Don doesn't have a sense of
  humor.

Here are some examples of Don's intentional
wackiness, as well as some funny things that have
  been written about him.

   Criticisms leveled at Don
It seems people are constantly getting tired of
  Don's behaviour and criticizing him.

Here's what some of them have to say.

   In Don's Defense
Lest we be accused of unfairly attacking Don, here
are some comments by people who stuck up for him
  over the years.

   Conclusions
After all is said and done, this is all we've done
  and said.

Usability. Spamassassin.

2004-09-07 Thread Don Saklad
How to use spamassassin explanations have not worked out for people
with no mastery of computers. There are neophytes and others not agile
with the learning curve unable to use spamassassin.

Apparently compiling a list of frequent terms and sorting through
the emacs rmail do help a little bit, for example...

...the list of quoted terms would not allow this message through !
