I was wondering if anyone knew where I can find documentation on how to go about upgrading Tomcat 4.0.6 to 4.1.12? Actual implementation steps would be helpful. Re: Tomcat Upgrade
Andrew, Our website is developed using Vignette Content Management components. These comprise of VCMS and VMCM. We need to upgrade these two versions and due to matrix compatibility issues, we are forced to upgrade Tomcat to 4.1.12. In this upgrade, we don't want to do a parallel installation, rather work w/the existing system. So would your steps be correct for such a scenario? Re: Increase Heapsize
I understand. The webapp is a content management site which has been producing out of memory errors. The server has 16GB RAM which is quite significant. Curious:are there any other adantages to setting them the same? I'm assuming that going from: -Xms512 -Xmx1024 to -Xms512 -Xmx2048 is less desirable than -Xms512 -Xmx1024 to -Xms2048 -Xmx2048 ? Understandable this may not apply in every case Christopher Schultz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 07/19/2006 09:52 AM Please respond to "Tomcat Users List" To: Tomcat Users List cc: Subject: Re: Increase Heapsize Ibrahim, > The current values on our system are: > -Xms512 -Xmx1024 > > so if I wished to increase the heapsize, can you give an example what > the new figures would be? You really need to do more research on your own: -Xms = set initial Java heap size -Xmx = set maximum Java heap size If you are currently allocating 1GB (-Xmx1024), then you probably want to set it to something /bigger/ than 1GB. Perhaps 1.5GB: -Xmx1536 Upon the recommendation of another poster, you might want to set the initial and the maximum to the same thing (that will allocate the entire Java heap at once, instead of forcing the memory manager to grow the heap during runtime): -Xms1536 -Xmx1536 It's up to you to decide what your heap size should be. You need to understand the operation and needs of your application, as well as pattern of usage by your users to choose a good heap size. You can certainly allocate a HUGE heap and cross your fingers, but that is not always a good strategy -- especially when you are limited by physical RAM as well as the other processes running on your server. RE: NEW : Tomcat Performance Monitoring
Peter, W e have a content management application using Vignette software for development. We use Tomcat 4.0.6 as our 'appserver', IHS for webserver. And oracle as our database. We're running on solaris machines. Last week we applied a efix supplied by the vendor (Vignette) for a problem that has existed since feburary. The site had been crashing nearly every week and each time the only resolution was to restart Tomcat. The efix is to remedy this by replacing a particular .jar file which the app uses. What I would like is to visually see the performance of Tomcat in real time. To see how it's performing in dealing with jsp pages and requests. What the heapsize is, how much GC is being used etc. The thread dump was a post-incident way of analyzing tomcat as it provided the key in finding a solution. We had seen methods/classes being called just prior to the java deadlock and were able to conclude which efix was needed. Still however we could suffer other deadlocks and more crashes so as a preventive method I'd like to analyze the overall performance of tomcat in real time. Re: Increase Heapsize
Chris, Thanks for your input. The application in question is a content management one which is developed using Vignette. The Vignette support team suggested the increase in heapsize as a first measure. We are analyzing the code itself for leaks. It may be that on jsp pages we are not closing connections properly. I am wondering whether: - simply editing the catalina.sh file as I described would do it or for proper application of an increase, we may need to use commands external to the file such as export or set? - whether the increase made in catalina.sh may need to be made elsewere in other files? Also what is stacksize permgensize and how can these play a role in how Tomcat performs and could their setting be related to OutOfMemory errors? No, this isn't right: the properties you are talking about are for the batch process itself (on a win32 machine). When startup.bat calls "java", those values are not inherited by the VM. > Do I simply increase the value after 'Xmx' in the JAVA_OPTS variable > in catalina.sh file? This ought to work for you. Although it is not unheard of to legitimately run out of memory (i.e. get OutOfMemoryErrors), you ought to think about whether or not increasing your heap size is actually going to fix your problem: often, you have a memory leak and it's better to test your app with a small heap because you can find it more quickly (i.e. less memory to burn through before you run out). I strongly advise you to critically examine your code to determine if the OutOfMemoryErrors are being caused by you, or if you really do just need more memory allocated to the JVM. -chris ** This communication (including any attachments) may contain privileged or confidential information intended for a specific individual and purpose, and is protected by law. I've increased the heapsize in my development enviroment. And I don't knowhow to confirm the change has been made to the effect the whole system is affected. So I'd like to know how to go about confirming this, possibly thru some monitoring measure.
