Any reason why there are multiple posts indicating that this actually

My onboard nic on this machine is:
 *-network

 product: 82562EZ 10/100 Ethernet Controller
 vendor: Intel Corporation

and if I try anything other than the PCnet-FAST III (or II) nothing works:

 $ uname -r
 2.6.24-24-generic
 [Linux Unbutu 8.04.2]
 Guest = Win2KPro Win2KServer
 Vbox = 2..2.0

So those suggesting Intel PRO/1000 might want to: 1) provide a
reference ticket/bug report showing how/why that works for them, and 2)
provide some additional information on their system hardware + host
 guest.

There is a known problem with the PCnet emulation in VirtualBox 2.2.0
which can cause a VM freeze under certain conditions. The reason for this
bug is not directly related to the PCnet device code but an API change
in the VMM which lead to this problem. The E1000 device code was already
properly adapted, the adaption of the PCnet code does not work. The problem
is fixed in the SVN and the fix will be included in the next maintenance
release but for the time being, changing the network emulation from PCnet
to E1000 should do the trick for most guests.

As for the specific E1000 device type: We provide three E1000 emulations:

  MT Desktop (82540OEM)
  T Server (82543GC)
  MT Server (82545EM)

The first type should be recognized by Windows Vista. The second device
should be recognized by Windows XP. The third model was introduced to
increase the compatibility with VMware OVF appliances. It should not
matter for Linux guests which device you choose, just use the first
device if you are unsure.

And no, the device type of the guest NIC has _nothing_ to do with the
device type of the host NIC!

Kind regards,

Frank

Thanks for the info. The problem with my Win2KPro guest is that, while

driver for them. And, because there is no internet connection the driver
can't be downloaded.

Of course enabling the PCnet-FAST III in addition to the Intel nic will
enable me to get to the internet via the PCnet-FAST III to download the
driver, but it's a bit of a kludge to have to do it that way.

If you know which driver you need why don't you download it within the

Well you can certainly do it that way... *if* you know exactly which
driver package you need to download, and *if* you want to download all
12MB of the driver from Intel (for my Win2K guest).
Using windows to fetch the driver via it's 'Found New Device'
application installs just the basic driver without all of added diags
etc., included with the Intel 12MB driver package.

Are any of the additional 11MB's included in the Intel package
required/necessary for VBox, or does the standard windows basic 'Found
New Device' install suffice?

[vbox-users] Shared folders

2009-04-24 Thread James Mansion
I can't mmount a shared folder with vbox 2.2 (Vista host, assorted Linux
guests including openSUSE 11.1 and Xubuntu 9.04, PUEL).

GAs build OK.

mount.vboxsf says 'protocol error' though. (It does run though, its not
as if the GA installation lied)

Also, I seem to get the VBox GUI hanging often when I click the chooser
button in the host GUI to define another shared area.

Anyone else see these?

Maybe when you copied the folders something got messed up.

Yes, after your mail I deleted the existing VM and recreated it
installing Win XP from an iso-image - the netbook doesn't have a dvd/cd
lector. The resolution is still fixed at 800x600 but now with 32 bit
colour depth. There is still no way to change the resolution.
Additionally I found that I am not able to install the GuestAdditions.
The iso-image of the guestAdditions is there.  Selecting 'Devices - mount
CD/DVD-ROM - Manager for virtual media' the image is in the list of the
mounted isos. But when I click on the option to install them, there is no
  reaction...
  Any hint?

In theory you should be able to change the guest resolution the usual
way: right click on desktop and going in the properties menu.
No way!

But if this is not working I'd suggest that you install the guest
additions, maybe that will add some more options.
Now, about the additions, you are saying that no screen appears right?
Did you try going in windows explorer and seeing if the cd is mounted?
Yes, it's mounted
If is so than you might try running the installer manually.
I did it and it works! On the 'cd' I found two different installers, one for
64 bit systems and one for x86. As the atom processor of the NC 10 identifies
itself as a unit with two processors I suppose the autoinstaller tries to
install the 64 bit version. Selecting the x86 version the installation worked
fine and the guest additions work now.
Thank you very much!

Probably just the basic from Found new device will do the work.
But since this is not an option for you I can just suggest alternatives.

Also, If I'm not wrong, you said that the PCNet driver is working for
you right? SO, my suggestion, is to sticky with it unless you REALLY
are experiencing some problems or want to try the Intel ones...

Also #2, since PCNet works, there is not problem at all (its no
kludge) to start the machine with 2 ethernet cards, get the drivers
for the intel one, and later remove the PCnet.

Plenty of options here :)

Hope one fits your needs.
