It doesn't matter how good your password is if you're using plaintext
connections :)

Since every MUA I've used i nthe last few years supports SSL or TLS I
should really get around to deprecating pop3 and imap and only using
pop3s and imaps.

This is especially imporant since some govts are trying to push through
laws forcing ISP's to store all of the data each of their users
downloads meaning that your unencrypted data will remain stored for
however long is legislated with access by who knows how many people.

2014-03-05 Thread Eric Shubert
PLAIN authentication is ok, provided that TLS has been activated by the
client (presumably before credentials are sent) or SSL is in use
(unconventional 465 port).

In changing this, each client will need to be manually reconfigured. I'm
not aware of any client that automatically adjusts to changes such as this.

I'm not aware of a practical way to require encrypted passwords for
qmail-smtpd (whether on port 25 or 587) at this point. Spamdyke has a
recent feature allowing it to handle authentication, and I believe that
Sam will be adding a setting to require encryption before authentication
in the next release. When that's available, I'll be changing QMT to use
spamdyke for authentication, which will (at last) allow for enforcement
of this policy (no passwords sent in clear text).

On the retrieval side of things, dovecot provides such a configuration
parameter, #disable_plaintext_auth = yes, which is the default value.

P.S. FWIW, I would have not expected to see (as many) unauthorized
attempts on port 587. Spammers will eventually use this port though.

this causes a sigpipe error in vdelivermail, and gets feed back into

think that the child ( vdelivermail ) crashed.

Apparently qmail-inject stops processing the input file ( via pipe from
vdelivermail:435 if ( write(write_fd, msgbuf, file_count) == -1 )) at
the bogus line that cant be parsed any further.
Once the pipe is closed by qmail-inject, any further writes will get a

Just to be sure:

that is qmail-local gets the signal 13 from vdelivermail. Vdelivermail
has the pipe to qmail-inject broken when qmail-inject closes the pipe.

[vchkpw] Qmail + chkuser + smtp-auth

2011-05-04 Thread OVH
Hi,

On my Qmail 1.03 I can not simultaneously apply smtp-auth patch
(qmail-smtpd-auth-0510) and chkuser (chkuser-2.0.8b-release or
chkuser-2.0.9-release).
It seems that there is a conflict between these two patches. you know a
patch which includes 2 or a solution to the conflict ?

Thanks!

[vchkpw] qmail aliases fail; chkuser 2.0.9 + vpopmail 5.4.25

2011-05-02 Thread matthew mcglynn

I have several domains hosted via vpopmail, and I use
chkuser 2.0.9 to block dictionary-attack spam.

chkuser appears to have broken my ability to use
qmail's dash aliases for vpopmail domains. For example,
if I had a vpopmail account called m...@example.com,
prior to chkuser I was able to send mail to
matt-...@example.com and it would be delivered to
the m...@example.com Maildir.

After installing chkuser 2.0.9, this feature stopped
working.

chkuser 2.0.9 appears supports dash aliases by default.
This is the relevant line from chkuser_settings.h:
#define CHKUSER_ENABLE_ALIAS

But this doesn't seem to work for vpopmail-hosted
domains -- only for the domain that is hosted natively
within qmail (listed in /var/qmail/control/locals).

The specific problem this causes me now is that
ezmlm-idx mailing lists cannot be used for vpopmail
domains, because ezmlm relies on dash aliases. For
example, a moderation reply address looks like:
 listname-accept-h...@example.com
whereas the delivery address is actually:
 listname-acc...@example.com

Subscription confirmation requests are similarly broken.

Is chkuser known to support qmail aliases within
vpopmail?

Related to the above, is chkuser 2.0.9 known to be
compatible with ezmlm-idx 7.1.1?

Thank you.

Thank you for the clarification.

For enabling extensions you must enable (uncomment)

This one was already enabled/uncommented:
#define CHKUSER_ENABLE_EZMLM_LISTS

I have now enabled this one:
#define CHKUSER_ENABLE_USERS_EXTENSIONS

This one was already enabled:
#define CHKUSER_USERS_DASH '-'

I finally made everything work. For future searchers,
this was the solution:

1- rebuild vpopmail after passing the --enable-qmail-ext
argument to its configure script

2- uncomment/enable both the following:
 #define CHKUSER_ENABLE_ALIAS_DEFAULT
 #define CHKUSER_ENABLE_USERS_EXTENSIONS
   in chkuser_settings.h

3- rebuild qmail (in my case, netqmail-1.05)

Thank you, Tonino.

Im not sure how you installed vpopmail, but check this, what is in
/data/apps/vpopmail/etc/vpopmail.mysql file, is mysql info right, and be sure
to check permissions, owner of vpopmail.mysql needs to be same user that is
owner of vpopmail (usually vpopmail user vchkpw group, that is if you havent

It's look like a permission problem. When you create your u...@domain, you
create it using the ~vpopmail/bin/vadduser in a root session?

Check your $QMAILDUID and $NOFILESGID in the sh script, be sure that user.group
are the owner of the tree /data/apps/vpopmail/*

Gook luck

Is there a way I can setup a separate queue just for the messages being
 created by the qmail-tap process?

Never mind. I just created a second instance of qmail at
/var/qmail-archive. smtproutes in the public instance sends the archive
messages to the archive process listening on 127.0.0.1, and smtproutes
in the archive process sends the messages to the archive server itself.

If we ever have an issue again, all archive mail can just pile up in the
/var/qmail-archive queue.

I've never had any issues with them personally (aside from not liking the
concept) but as far as I know neither vpopmail nor qmail have anything to do
with delivery confirmation. It's a MUA to MUA thing and the recipient can
decide if he wants to confirm he read the message. Your client just needs to
check the confirm delivery box in outlook.

[vchkpw] Qmail Tap tap only incoming mail

2008-04-24 Thread Andrew Niemantsverdriet
Is it possible to make Qmail tap only tap the incoming mail? My
problem is that I am trying to get mail to deliver to two places to
ease the transition to a new mail server. Qmail tap allows that
functionality but breaks down on inter-domain email. The person who
sends it typically gets the mail in the new mail box and the person
receiving it does not get a copy depending on where the names are in
the qmail tap control file. Is there a way to make qmail tap do what
I want it to do or is there a better solution?

What i did was...

old server
- Change TTL values in zonefile to 5 minutes and wait till it is propagated
(normally 1 day)

- Create domain and popboxes on new server
- Copy contents from old server to new server with scp (popboxes)
- remove domain and popboxes from old server
- Disable pop access on old server (with vmoduser -p domain.com)
- change DNS settings and MX records for domains to point to new server
- place domainname in /var/qmail/control/morercptshosts on old server so
qmail will still accept incoming mail
- place domainname:ip_address_of_new server in /var/qmail/control/smtproutes
on old server to forward incoming mail to the new server
- after dns has propagated remove entries on old server from
/var/qmail/control/morercptshosts and /var/qmail/control/smtproutes files.

- Change TTL back to normal

During a window of 5 minutes its possible clients (users) will try to
connect using pop to the old server, just tell them to try again later.

That will not work for this particular migration. They need two

Re: [vchkpw] Qmail Tap tap only incoming mail

2008-04-24 Thread Rick Romero

Maybe just rsync at regular intervals after initial replication?

You could also create a second local qmail install with an smtproutes
entry for the local domain to point to the new server. Then add a
forward within a global maildrop filter using /var/qmail2/bin/forward
(which will use your 2nd install's smtproutes to hit the new box)

Either should get all incoming mail replicated.

[vchkpw] qmail + smtp-auth + chkuser + vpopmail = messed up pipes?

2008-01-30 Thread Florian Leeber

Hi folks,

after rather long but then successul compile marathon I finally habe
everything in place...but...

- inbound mail without SMTP auth works fine
- outbound mail with auth leads basically to some messed up pipes or
file descriptors whatever, look at this:

ehlo ()
250-www.happyserverfriends.info
250-AUTH LOGIN CRAM-MD5 PLAIN
250-AUTH=LOGIN CRAM-MD5 PLAIN
250-PIPELINING
250 8BITMIME
AUTH PLAIN (xx)
235 ok, go ahead (#2.0.0)
mail from: (x)
CHKUSER accepted sender: from gmx.at:[EMAIL PROTECTED]: remote
test.at:unknown:127.0.0.1 rcpt : sender accepted

250 ok

after the mail from the log line form chkuser does not appear in the log
file, instead it appears at the client?s side! therefore all clients
choke and won?t send any mail...

this prevents me to use smtp auth at the moment - plz help, as a handful
of users is waiting desperately for outgoing mails, thx!

kind regards, F. Leeber

Hi!

well my current solution is to check all mailboxes with a perl script and
add those email addresses to be removed from validrcptto.txt file... then
rebuild validrcptto.cdb... and mail won't be accepted for them... but this
is a permanent failure error.. should be better to be specified a 450 at
smtp time for example as error code...

have a nice day!

Antonio's Chkusr works perfect maybe you could look at implementing it :)
will save a lot of hassle

Actually, as I was falling asleep last night (isn't that always the
 case), I wondered why chkuser.c sets maxmbxquota_limit = 0 and not 100
by default. It would seem to me if you're enabling the define, you
would already expect that function to just work, not go to another place
and enable something else. Having the environment variable is great,
then if you want to alter the default, you can set it there...

I believe that Tonino has set this for the tcp.smtp otherwise you need
to recompile qmail everytime you need to change the setting for the quota.

Remo

Right - that makes sense, but as it is now when it's enabled, it's not
REALLY enabled until the environment is set. The environment is
required, it's not an option. This is because in the chkuser.c the
limit is set to 0, which disables the check. If, by default, the
limit was set to 100, then it would be enabled by the define AND you
can change the limit in environment or disable it by setting the
environment to 0.
To me the environment variables should override the 'standard' - and
if you've enabled 'smtp bouncing', you shouldn't have to add the
environment as well (imho, enabling it twice).
Rick, the standard I'm following in chkuser, whenever possible, is the
following: each time a variable is needed/used, it must be defined,
otherwise the feature is disabled.
You see this for each variable you can use: enabling variable, bad rcpt
limit variable, quota variable, etc.
This is a double security against unwanted features, very useful for new
features within new releases.

But I'd like to see vchkpw working fine inside a virtual
machine... :)

Is it possible to compile and install vchkpw with debugging
information, so we can find out which call to strstr() called the
segfault? Or is it the getrlimit() call from the strace? Maybe you
could email me a more detailed trace off-list and I'll try to find
the section of code that's actually crashing?

If you grep through the ChangeLog for 64, you'll see that we've
made various changes to support 64-bit over the past few years. I'm
guessing that this is another 64-bit issue, maybe one that only comes
up on machines with lots of RAM?

I've proposed the following solution, a few times over the years, and
I still think it's a good one. It would fit your needs (and most
people's needs) well.

Someone needs to make a qmail-smtpd patch that calls an external
program to verify an account. That way, there's a single qmail-smtpd
patch and you can come up with whatever program (chkuser,
validrcptto, etc.) you want to verify an account.

You'd pass in the sender's address and the attempted recipient
address. The program can have different exit codes for different
conditions, and can even output a custom reject message. This would
allow for handling lots of conditions:

* Temporary failure, user is over quota
* Permanent failure, user is over quote
* Permanent failure, account does not exist
* Permanent failure, account closed, please use [EMAIL PROTECTED]
instead

* Accepted
* Accepted (by catchall)
* Rejected, this account does not accept mail from [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hopefully someone with some time on their hands will take this on.

One of the finest thing in vpopmail IMHO would be to set a list with wich
each vpopmail is compatible with each courier-imap this is a bit difficult
to see... and you have to do lots of tests... and if you set one vpopmail
version with one courier-imap and with time one of them become buggy it's
a problem to change one of them version... another thing would be nice too
to correct would be that vpopmail not to let permanent connections against
mysql because else if no one has poped in courier-imap for some time...
courier-imap hangs because the connection he opened to mysql trough
vpopmail is being closed because inactivity...

congrats for so nice software :)

Hi mates!

I'm using John Simpsons last combined patch... I'm trying to know if I

are nowadays becoming quite crazy IMHO but they're know blacklisting this

I have think doing an script that inserts and recreates validrcptto.cdb
this way no mail will enter from outside... but authenticated users are
able to bypass validrcptto... so will always be able to get that bounce...
anyway IMHO this is not the most worring thing... the problem is mainly
with outside servers and users... (not mine users...)

as a little idea... does qmail-local do anything in wich I could enter a
bash script any place wich does a remove the mail address from
validrcptto.txt and latter rebuild validrcptto.cbd file for not accepting
mail for overquota users? don't know exactly how to manage for this...

any ideas??

More strange, after install make install-strip and configure
courier-authlib to use authvchkpw, any user can login into POP and IMAP

I simple do:

What patches does Inter7 have for qmail?

The qmail-inject code for parsing To/Cc: headers chokes on stuff that

Were is this patch?

[vchkpw] Qmail-scanner and manteinance

2007-11-08 Thread egoitz
Hi!

I have been reading about qmail-scanner manteinance (I didn't think it has
lol) I only upgraded clamav when freshclam (that is launched once per
hour) told old version upgrade engine... and that's the only thing I did
with qmail-scanner maintenance... but have read that should too launch
qmail-scanner-queue.pl -z... I don't never upgrade spamassassin and are
the two things I launch in my qmail-scanner ... clamav and
qmail-scanner...

why should be launched qmail-scanner-queue.pl -z? don't undertand quite
well that have read over there... that sais for upgrading perl-scanner
database... what refers concretely with perl-scanner-database? and is it
advised to do any other manteinante operation (other than
qmail-scanner-queue.pl -z) ?

Thanks a lot
have a nice day

WOW your iowait state is WAY too high. Seems to me like you probably

What is your current drive configuration? Please be as specific as possible.

If it helps, I'll describe my configuration:

I'm using three RAID arrays. Two are RAID1 and one is RAID10, with one

What is Deny?

Deny is rejected SMTP sessions, usually due to an RBL rejection but this
can also be due to mailbox full or user not existing if you are using
the CHKUSER patch.

Is Deny high?

That doesn't strike me as overly high, over the last 24 hours I've had:

Max Allow 73.7 kSMTP (147.4%) Average Allow 36.5 kSMTP (73.0%) Current
Allow 42.3 kSMTP (84.6%)

Max Deny 54.2 kSMTP (108.4%) Average Deny 21.5 kSMTP (43.0%) Current
Deny 30.4 kSMTP (60.9%)

I wouldn't worry about the denies because they don't cause significant
load - as long as you're rejecting their connections, you don't have the
deal with the load of processing their mail.

I use isoqlog to analyze my email traffic, but I don´t have stats of

software to analyze POP3 and SMTP log?

qmailmrtg7 is a graphing tool for qmail/pop3/dnscache etc. You can
find it at http://www.inter7.com

When my server is slow, I have:
SMTP concurrent: 40 - 50
POP3 concurrent: 20 - 30
Load Average: 30 - 40

Are you running SA and Clam on the same machine ?

Also, are you running the update_tmprsadh nightly (if your not it has
to generate a new key for every encrypted connection).

I have many SMTP connections with not existing recipient.

If that message is in the smtpd log, that's fine.

You may also want to look at decreasing your timeoutsmtpd, put 180 or
something similar in /var/qmail/control/timeoutsmtpd to change the
default of 7200 (this will stop the spam zombie who hang around just
using up a connection slot).

My server was very good. Between last monday and last friday it is
very slow.
How can I identify a possible attack?

Hope the above helps.

Rick

How many hard drives are in this server? Are they in RAID at all? It's
looking that most of your high load average is due to waiting on IO. This
is solved by adding more drives to increase available IO bandwidth. You
should become familiar with two utilities, vmstat and iostat. If you're
using a redhat derived linux, install the sysstat rpm to gain access to
iostat. Between these two utilities you should be able to figure out where
your problems are coming from and how to resolve them.

Tren

Re: [vchkpw] qmail high performance

2007-10-08 Thread João Luiz - Terra

Hi Rick,

Thank you.
I installed qmailmrtg7.
I don´t running SA and Clam when my server is slow.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] cat /var/qmail/control/simcontrol
:clam=no,spam=no,spam_passthru=no,attach=.vbs:.lnk:.scr:.wsh:.hta:.pif

Also, are you running the update_tmprsadh nightly (if your not it has to
generate a new key for every encrypted connection).
How can I know if my qmail is to generate a new key for every encrypted
connection?

Is this?
01 01 * * * root /var/qmail/bin/dh_key 21 /dev/null

You may also want to look at decreasing your timeoutsmtpd, put 180 or
something similar in /var/qmail/control/timeoutsmtpd to change the default
of 7200 (this will stop the spam zombie who hang around just using up a
connection slot).

I use timeoutsmtpd with 60.

Regards,
Joao

Re: [vchkpw] qmail high performance

2007-10-08 Thread Nick Bright

I had the same problems under high load on a similarly configured
machine (2.0Ghz instead of 2.4Ghz, but other than that about the same).

When I installed the external big todo patches it helped A LOT, but I
still have some delay in delivery. However it is much more acceptable
as messages can be delayed one to two minutes, instead of fifteen to
twenty minutes. Usually things go through fairly instantly.

The single best performance enhancer you could do would be the external
todo patch, from my point of view.

I also found that the chkuser patch also helped a LOT, I highly
recommend using that patch as well.

For reference, I'm not using Bill's toaster, but rather my own custom brew.

Another load reducing method is to use a much faster anti-spam product,
but you will most likely have to pay for that. I suggest MPPd
(messagepartners.com) I've been using it for several years with the
Cloudmark plugin and it is much more effective than spamassassin, with
hundreds of times lower load on the system.

You'll need to give something specific here. Bill Shupps Toaster is
widely popular. I use it myself and have no issues with performance.
What are the specifications of the hardware you've implemented it on.
What specifically is performing slow? Is there anything else on this
server? Approximately how many mailboxes are housed on this server?
How many deliveries per second/minute/hour/day (whatever is easiest to
convey) and do you have any idea what your peak concurrent deliveries
are? You need to provide as much information as possible before asking
such a general question.

Max Allow 14.2 kSMTP (1422.7%) Average Allow 8345.0 SMTP (834.5%)
Current Allow 8694.0 SMTP (869.4%) Max Deny 11.4 kSMTP (1140.6%)
Average Deny 6337.0 SMTP (633.7%) Current Deny 5181.0 SMTP (518.1%)

Do you want see others logs of qmailmrtg?

Thank you
Joao

qmailmrtg7 is a graphing tool for qmail/pop3/dnscache etc. You can
find it at http://www.inter7.com

When my server is slow, I have:
SMTP concurrent: 40 - 50
POP3 concurrent: 20 - 30
Load Average: 30 - 40

Are you running SA and Clam on the same machine ?

Also, are you running the update_tmprsadh nightly (if your not it has
to generate a new key for every encrypted connection).

I have many SMTP connections with not existing recipient.

If that message is in the smtpd log, that's fine.

You may also want to look at decreasing your timeoutsmtpd, put 180 or
something similar in /var/qmail/control/timeoutsmtpd to change the
default of 7200 (this will stop the spam zombie who hang around just
using up a connection slot).

My server was very good. Between last monday and last friday it is
very slow.
How can I identify a possible attack?

Hope the above helps.

Regards,

Rick

How many hard drives are in this server? Are they in RAID at all? It's
looking that most of your high load average is due to waiting on IO. This is
solved by adding more drives to increase available IO bandwidth. You should
become familiar with two utilities, vmstat and iostat. If you're using a
redhat derived linux, install the sysstat rpm to gain access to iostat.
Between these two utilities you should be able to figure out where your
problems are coming from and how to resolve them.

Tren

The single best performance enhancer you could do would be the external
todo patch, from my point of view.

Depends on the filesystem. If the filesystem has indexed directory
support, ext-todo should be sufficient. Otherwise, you need the
big-ext-todo patch.

Hello,

I am working with qmail toaster by http://www.shupp.org/toaster/.
Is it the better performance instalation?

My server is very slowly :(

You'll need to give something specific here. Bill Shupps Toaster is
widely popular. I use it myself and have no issues with performance.
What are the specifications of the hardware you've implemented it on.
What specifically is performing slow? Is there anything else on this
server? Approximately how many mailboxes are housed on this server? How
many deliveries per second/minute/hour/day (whatever is easiest to
convey) and do you have any idea what your peak concurrent deliveries
are? You need to provide as much information as possible before asking
such a general question.

Tren
