Re: [Veritas-bu] How to implement a multi-tape catalog backup under NetBackup 5.x?
Justin, We do multi-tape catalog backups everyday. Here's how we do it. create a standard policy to backup the images directory to tape. /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images We do have an exclude not to get the masters images. Then we configure the catalog to backup to do the following (this is a solaris master, but same applies to windows), we push this to disk in an alternate datacenter: /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/mastername/ /usr/openv/volmgr/database/ /usr/openv/var and of course the the media db's, etc from the media servers To do a recovery (which we have had to do unfortunately) first recover the second piece, after that you will have what you need to recover the images directory using the standard restore process. Hope this helps. Mike --- Justin Piszcz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Has anyone done or setup NetBackup to backup the catalog database onto more than 1 tape? RE: [Veritas-bu] command-line way to get vol_id from filespec and date range?
As far as I know, there's no good way to do this without mining the database files directly. "bpimagelist -media" will give you most of this, it'll tell you what tapes were used for a policy, client, time-range, etc. Long listing of simply "bpimagelist" will do the same if you parse the FRAG lines for tape info (note: an image can span tapes so fragments for an image can be on more than one tape. Fragments themselves don't seem to span tapes). Once you add "file-spec" to the "what tape is my backup on", things get messy fast. -M -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of Rob HaigSent: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 8:29 AMTo: Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.eduSubject: [Veritas-bu] command-line way to get vol_id from filespec and date range? Title: Message No need to do fancy scripting. Create an archive schedule within the policy, same retention, pool, etc. as the regular backup schedule. Use "bparchive" and a list of files supplied to bparchive via the "-f" option. bparchive works like backup but the files in the filelist are deleted from the client if the backup was successful. (Careful, directories are deleted, too. Create a list of *files*, not a top-level directory.) Magic - no bpend_notify or anything (although that method would work). You could call the bparchive job via cron or via a bpstart_notify script. bparchive cannot be scheduled using the Netbackup scheduler like a regular backup schedule. RE: [Veritas-bu] media server cutoff point
When I did architectures for clients at VERITAS I used the following to determine what clients should be upgraded to media servers. I believe that other architects followed some of these same guidelines. 1. Data backup size - Between 100GB and 200GB minimum depending on several factors such as: If customer had a dedicated GIG backup network and depending on total data from all clients and what their backup windows were. 2. Do they have the infrastructure to attach clients to the SAN (Switch ports, client HBA ports ...)? 3. How critical is the data for backup? Does it need to be backed up fast or more importantly recovered fast? 4. Total impact to the backup system. At some point you have too many media servers to manage. This is both from an administrative standpoint and the ability of NetBackup to manage this load (media server communication and SSO management). As a general rule I have tried to keep media server numbers under 20 for any given master server domain. 5. You have some good points also, tape media utilization will go down dramatically. Title: Message Probably the best method is to build the new machine, same config as the old and ensure you use the same host name where possible (this makes life easier, although there is a way to recover the catalog to another machine if needed). Once built, install Netbackup to the same MP levels as before. Ensure you can see your tape library / robot use BPRECOVER to recover the catalog. I think this may be covered in the sysadmin guides. RE: [Veritas-bu] media server cutoff point
Unless any of this is deemed business critical, then it's a waste of money! I only have 2 SAN Media Servers, hold approx 2TB of data each, and these are deemed Business Critical - Therefore, these machines are treated as backups over fibre to increase performance. Remainder of our clients are backed up over LAN. (some clients hold 500GB of Data and backups take around 5-6 hours if quiet). Yes Tape drives will be a problem, unless you tune Netbackup and the backup windows to share the drives. With SAN Media, you also get the option to implement SSO - yes another cost - to share a library!! Hmm Money is suddenly going... !
