Its natively supported by the st driver so long as u have a current st patch, so you don't need any st.conf entries. Though these will be the Sun recommended settings and HP may recommended slightly different settings,

Re: [Veritas-bu] How to implement a multi-tape catalog backup under NetBackup 5.x?

2006-03-30 Thread Michael Anderson
Justin,

We do multi-tape catalog backups everyday. Here's how
we do it.

create a standard policy to backup the images
directory to tape.

/usr/openv/netbackup/db/images

We do have an exclude not to get the masters images.

Then we configure the catalog to backup to do the
following (this is a solaris master, but same applies
to windows), we push this to disk in an alternate
datacenter:

/usr/openv/netbackup/db/images/mastername/
/usr/openv/volmgr/database/
/usr/openv/var
and of course the the media db's, etc from the media
servers

To do a recovery (which we have had to do
unfortunately) first recover the second piece, after
that you will have what you need to recover the images
directory using the standard restore process.

Hope this helps.

If you have the Date Range and Client name, try this:

  bpmedialist -media -U -d mm/dd/yy -e mm/dd/yy -client Client Name

Foreach media id returned, lookup the images on it:

  bpimmedia -L -media media ID

It's funny you mention this, because I would like to know how to get
the list of files in a backup image. I usually end up loading too
many tapes for a restore.

As far
as I know, there's no good way to do this without mining the database files
directly.

"bpimagelist -media" will give you most of this, it'll tell you what
tapes were used for a policy, client, time-range, etc. Long listing of
simply "bpimagelist" will do the same if you parse the FRAG lines for tape info
(note: an image can span tapes so fragments for an image can be on more than one
tape. Fragments themselves don't seem to span tapes).

Once
you add "file-spec" to the "what tape is my backup on", things get messy
fast.

No
need to do fancy scripting.

Create
an archive schedule within the policy, same retention, pool, etc. as the regular
backup schedule.

Use
"bparchive" and a list of files supplied to bparchive via the "-f" option.
bparchive works like backup but the files in the filelist are deleted from the
client if the backup was successful. (Careful, directories are deleted,
too. Create a list of *files*, not a top-level
directory.)

Magic
- no bpend_notify or anything (although that method would work).

You
could call the bparchive job via cron or via a bpstart_notify script.
bparchive cannot be scheduled using the Netbackup scheduler like a regular
backup schedule. It's a "user driven" command.

Morning
Have an old LTO1 tape that has not been written to in over 12 months.
When I run the media list it shows this tape 0807L1 expired 29th March 06.
Today is the 30th.
The status of the tape shows expired MPX

So when trying to bpexpdate -m 0807L1 -d 0 it tell me it could not deassign
media due to media manager error.

Any tips on how to remove this from the report? Netbackup believes it is
assigned to a volume and I can see it.

The tape is not stored in the library and there will be no need to re-use
this tape in the future
Thanks

A client is currently using 150GB as the threshold for determining whether a
server should be a NetBackup media server or client.
This results in 30 SAN media servers using SSO and 730 clients that are
multiplexed in about 70 policies.
The environment is the large STK SL8500 with 20 9940B tape drives
The client is converting all NetBackup clients that have over 36GB of data into

stop laughingThis is serious.

Please help me demonstrate the folly of this proposal.
tape-drives will be shoeshining as the media servers will not be able to get
the data to the drives fast enough
license fees will be astronomical for SAN media servers
tape drives will not be available when needed and jobs will fail with 134/196

the number of tapes will increase since media servers do not share tapes
The number of policies will cause bpsched to crunch continually
The catalog backup will never start or finish.

You could always do a vmquery -deassignbyid
But afteryou do this make sure you delete the tape and then let NBU
recreate it with an inventory robot. If you don't delete the tape in
NBU 5.x you can end up with 2 media servers writing to the same tape
causing data loss.

Morning
Have an old LTO1 tape that has not been written to in over 12 months.
When I run the media list it shows this tape 0807L1 expired 29th March
06.
Today is the 30th.
The status of the tape shows expired MPX

So when trying to bpexpdate -m 0807L1 -d 0 it tell me it could not
deassign
media due to media manager error.

Any tips on how to remove this from the report? Netbackup believes it is
assigned to a volume and I can see it.

The tape is not stored in the library and there will be no need to
re-use
this tape in the future
Thanks

[Veritas-bu] Tape drive speed discrepancy problem

2006-03-30 Thread Song, Young

I'm having some performance/thruput discrepancy problem with LTO-2 drives
and want to seek suggestions to resolve my problems.

My backup infrastructure has the following:

- Software

NBU DataCenter 4.5FP8

- NBU master+media server (running Solaris 8):

Sun Fire-280R:PCI1 slot has Dual-Channel Ultra320 SCSI-Channel Card
  PCI3 slot has Dual-Channel Ultra320 SCSI-Channel Card

- Tape Library:

Sun L100 w/ 3 x LTO-2 drives w/ LVD SCSI controller

And, I have the following physical SCSI connectivity:

PCI1 top channel- HP LTO-2 Drive2 in Sun L100 Library
PCI1 bottom channel - HP LTO-2 Drive3 in Sun L100 Library
PCI3 top channel- HP LTO-2 Drive1 in Sun L100 Library
PCI3 bottom channel - Sun L100 Library controller

(each SCSI channel is properly terminated with an LVD SCSI terminator)

A problem that I'm having is that Drive1 runs at around 24-27MB/sec while
Drive2 at 16-17MB/sec to back up the same host at the same time (the 2
drives concurrently running).

Any recommendation for this situation? Would getting a 3rd Ultra320 SCSI
card and connecting each tape drive from a dedicated SCSI card be something
worth trying to resolve this performance discrepancy problem?

Thanks for your help in advance!

- Young

RE: [Veritas-bu] media server cutoff point

2006-03-30 Thread Ambrose, Monte
When I did architectures for clients at VERITAS I used the following to
determine what clients should be upgraded to media servers. I believe
that other architects followed some of these same guidelines.

1. Data backup size - Between 100GB and 200GB minimum depending on
several factors such as: If customer had a dedicated GIG backup network
and depending on total data from all clients and what their backup
windows were.
2. Do they have the infrastructure to attach clients to the SAN (Switch
ports, client HBA ports ...)?
3. How critical is the data for backup? Does it need to be backed up
fast or more importantly recovered fast?
4. Total impact to the backup system. At some point you have too many
media servers to manage. This is both from an administrative standpoint
and the ability of NetBackup to manage this load (media server
communication and SSO management). As a general rule I have tried to
keep media server numbers under 20 for any given master server domain.
5. You have some good points also, tape media utilization will go down
dramatically.

Monte

A client is currently using 150GB as the threshold for determining
whether a server should be a NetBackup media server or client.
This results in 30 SAN media servers using SSO and 730 clients that are
multiplexed in about 70 policies.
The environment is the large STK SL8500 with 20 9940B tape drives
The client is converting all NetBackup clients that have over 36GB of
data into media servers.

stop laughingThis is serious.

Please help me demonstrate the folly of this proposal.
tape-drives will be shoeshining as the media servers will not be able to
get the data to the drives fast enough
license fees will be astronomical for SAN media servers
tape drives will not be available when needed and jobs will fail with
134/196 errors
the number of tapes will increase since media servers do not share tapes
The number of policies will cause bpsched to crunch continually
The catalog backup will never start or finish.

other reasons...please

Has anyone done or setup NetBackup to backup the catalog database onto

 not fit on one tape.

Similarly, has anyone done a bprecover with a catalog backup that

If you still have problems, you can run the Java client on just about

You could always do a vmquery -deassignbyid
But afteryou do this make sure you delete the tape and then let NBU recreate
it with an inventory robot. If you don't delete the tape in NBU 5.x you can
end up with 2 media servers writing to the same tape causing data loss.

Morning
Have an old LTO1 tape that has not been written to in over 12 months. When I
run the media list it shows this tape 0807L1 expired 29th March 06. Today is
the 30th. The status of the tape shows expired MPX

So when trying to bpexpdate -m 0807L1 -d 0 it tell me it could not deassign
media due to media manager error.

Any tips on how to remove this from the report? Netbackup believes it is
assigned to a volume and I can see it.

The tape is not stored in the library and there will be no need to re-use
this tape in the future Thanks

Probably the best method is to build the new machine,
same config as the old and ensure you use the same host name where possible
(this makes life easier, although there is a way to recover the catalog to
another machine if needed).

Once built, install Netbackup to the same MP levels as
before.
Ensure you can see your tape library /

I
think this may be covered in the sysadmin

RE: [Veritas-bu] media server cutoff point

2006-03-30 Thread WEAVER, Simon

Unless any of this is deemed business critical, then it's a waste of money!
I only have 2 SAN Media Servers, hold approx 2TB of data each, and these are
deemed Business Critical - Therefore, these machines are treated as backups
over fibre to increase performance.

Remainder of our clients are backed up over LAN. (some clients hold 500GB of
Data and backups take around 5-6 hours if quiet).

Yes Tape drives will be a problem, unless you tune Netbackup and the backup
windows to share the drives. With SAN Media, you also get the option to
implement SSO - yes another cost - to share a library!!

Hmm Money is suddenly going... !

Subject: [Veritas-bu] media server cutoff point

A client is currently using 150GB as the threshold for determining whether a
server should be a NetBackup media server or client. This results in 30 SAN
media servers using SSO and 730 clients that are multiplexed in about 70
policies. The environment is the large STK SL8500 with 20 9940B tape drives
The client is converting all NetBackup clients that have over 36GB of data
into media servers.

stop laughingThis is serious.

Please help me demonstrate the folly of this proposal. tape-drives will be
shoeshining as the media servers will not be able to get the data to the
drives fast enough license fees will be astronomical for SAN media servers
tape drives will not be available when needed and jobs will fail with
134/196 errors the number of tapes will increase since media servers do not
share tapes The number of policies will cause bpsched to crunch continually
The catalog backup will never start or finish.

other reasons...please

[Veritas-bu] Win2k3 Event id 168

2006-03-30 Thread WEAVER, Simon
Title: Message

Morning
Must be having a bad week, as problems and issues now seem to be
appearing.

On 2 SAN Media Servers, using SSO they are both reporting
Event ID 168 which states "RSM cannot manage library device.
Failed to communicate with device or obtain device setup
information"

It always seems to be around 2:38am each morning.

I
logged onto the servers locally, and of course under "Storage/Removable
Storage/Libraries it shows the 4 LTO3 Tape
Drives".
As Netbackup controls the robot (from my understanding), is there
a clean way to remove these errors?

Thanks

RE: [Veritas-bu] How to implement a multi-tape catalog backup und er NetBackup 5.x?

Will be a bit of a pain if one of the tapes was unreadable though :-(

Your DB does seem to be quite large Justin!

Has anyone done or setup NetBackup to backup the catalog database onto
more than 1 tape? For instance, my catalog DB is 500-600GB and will
 not fit on one tape.

Similarly, has anyone done a bprecover with a catalog backup that
 spans more than 1 tape?

 Justin.
