I would avoid this solution because for others filesystems include in
this policy, using the "cross mountpoint" could cause the backup to be
grow too much...

Why not just backup /users & select "cross mountpoints". It'll handle
both conditions.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Files backuped twice

Hi all,

I use Netbackup V5,0 for a not a long time, and I have a very basic
question :

In an include list for Unix clients on the master server , I would like
to have, for example :
/users
/users/login

For some clients, /users/login is on the same filesystem than /users. So
all the files under /users/login are backuped twice. Do you think it is
possible to backup these files only once ( keyword, .. ) ? I tried
using exclude/include list on the client, but no way...

Thanks in advance

Regards,

Julien

RE: [Veritas-bu] File listing for Fragment

2006-05-09 Thread Andrew Wilkin

Ok then,

I can identify that the file I'm looking for  is 'x'
blocks from the start of the backup image!, this is the  5th field in the
*.f file.  My value is 105001394 for the 5th field.

How do I then go 'x' blocks from the start of the backup
image on the tape? I've been using 'mt' and it uses 'files' to count, not
'blocks' as specified within the *.f file. Should I be using another
utility?

Thanks

No offense, but seeking to a single fragment & reading
files is netbackup's job.  The TOC you describe (associating fragment to
file) is the quick definition of Netbackup's image catalog.
You're starting to write the application you've already
bought.

To answer your question, I think you're going to have to
mine the catalog directly for the info you're looking for.  Look under the
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/images///.f

you'll have to convert them.

RE: [Veritas-bu] File listing for Fragment

2006-05-09 Thread Andrew Wilkin

Thanks Mark,

No offense taken! The problem is that I have an archive
backup of an old NetApp Filer that is no more but the data is
critical! The only way for me to recover the NDMP backup is via a SUN system
(which is fine). The problem I see, there appears to be no way for me to
identify on which Fragment/Image on the tape are particular file is located when
all I can see within the "Images on Media" is a number of entires with the
same BackupID and their associated file numbers on the
Tape/Media.

What would be good!! When I identify the file to
recover through the Backup, Recovery Interface and view the piece of media
required through Preview, I also get the file number!!

How I got around the problem was to sequentially extract a
TOC for each of the backups and then 'grep' from that the file I was looking
for. I had to do this 27 times as this Backup was made up of 27 files! Once
I found the entry within the TOC I then new were on the Tape to extract the
required file from.

Thanks for any comments.

I'll have a look and *.f file to see if I can see my file
to recover!

Thanks

2006-05-09 Thread Andrew Wilkin

Thanks Steve,

I did think of this, but when I look at the 'Images on
Media' gui. There are number of Fragments (Images) on the piece of media, all
with the same BackupID!! So I don't believe this would help
me.

I suppose what happens, is that Backup
Request being backed-up is 'large' and the system has broken this into
multiple Images/Fragments (files on the tape), but because it's all part of the
same Backup they are tagged with the same BackupID number.

Thanks again

recovery server (i.e. restore tapes from one site to other).  I don’t
know if this is possible or how complicated it is.

I am looking for best practices for this situation.

P.S. we will be using Mirror View to replicate the information to the
new site.

Thanks

Will you

RE: [Veritas-bu] hanging bpbkar process

2006-05-09 Thread Aaron Mills

Well the server/client are the same box so network issues
are out. I'm NFS mounting a slice to the NBU server and then backing up it up.
After about 3 hours, the client process just stops logging. I've checked bpbrm,
bptm, and bpbkar logs to no avail.

Could an NFS hicup cause this to
happen?

bpbrm.log shows:

06:57:36.696 [13465] <2> bpbrm sighandler: signal 14

some three hours earlier, the last log from bpbkar looks
like:

Often times the Media / Master server encounters and error and exits but cant
notify the Client (they don't even attempt to) It sounds like you have at least
some logs enabled on the Media server since you mention that you reviewed the
Bpbrm log. So review the Media Server logs to see if you can get more
information. What I often have seen is a network disconnect between the Client
and the Media Server. This stops the backup as far as Bpbrm is concerned but
Bpbkar does not know about it, he just keeps churning through data until he is
done.
If this only happens on single client then it maybe something like a bad
port, Nic, Driver ect. If it only happens on one Policy but other policies for
that same client fail then you have a mystery on your hands. If you can post the
relevant logs so we can browse them a bit (Bpbrm, Bpbkar, Bptm to start I would
think)

Re: [Veritas-bu] Command via bpcd

2006-05-09 Thread Austin Murphy

Thanks Hampus,
In a previous email to the list (before I subscribed) Bob Stump shows this:

the general syntax is
bpgp from
bpgp to

Can the command "bpgp" also create directories and/or support wildcards?

How about bpinst?
$ bpinst -h
<...>
   bpinst -MISC
   [ -d ]
   [ -enforce_version_check ]
   [ -X ]
   -host client_name
   -Z file_name
   -dest dest_path
   -src src_path
<...>

Again, in a previous email Charles Ballowe wrote:

bpinst -MISC -X -Z script_name.sh -src /path/to/script -dest
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin -host client_name

make script_name.sh something that appends the server to the bp.conf
--- the option for -dest must be as above, the path to script is the
directory where your script resides on the master. The sneaky part is
that this copies the script to the client, executes it, and removes
it. It's quite useful for lots of administrative tasks. It only works
with unix clients though - the bpgp seems to be useful for sending
files to unix and windows. Without the -X it can be used to send any
file from the master to the client and isn't restricted to that bin
directory as a destination.

Does anyone know what -d does? delete? debug? directory?
How about -enforce_version_check?

Thanks,

Austin

(sorry but I've repeated myself here!)

I know I can get a complete listing of a specific backup using bpmedialist and give the backup id etc. But using the Images on Media control( from the GUI), I can see the multiple Fragments on the Tape with the File Numbers, so there must be a way somehow to relate this back into the NetBackup DataBase to use it!

This has come about from an historic NDMP system I've had to recover from and for the particular directory, they are 27 Fragments, and I know how to extract the NDMP backup using a SUN system, but I didn't know which file on the tape to skip to. I have managed to extract the data. But I'm hoping I can get a better solution to what I've done, by creating a TOC for each of the Fragments and grep-ping for my data to extract!

drive from the master server in a script.

Well you know more about NBU than me, but my only suggestion is a
powerdown and restart of the daemons or server
perhaps.

  Has anybody seen an
error 44 from media manager when trying to use the configure storage device
configuration wizard? I have tried this on all 5 libraries
(separately and together) with the same results.
Although these drives are not SSO'd I would expect the wizard to find the
drives. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: [Veritas-bu] NB 6 and VSP on Windows

2006-05-09 Thread Dean
VSS is using the Windows VSS service, which in turn can access other technology such as Veritas Volume Manager, or snapshot/mirror capabilities of your disk hardware, which would be the way to go if you're licensed for those goodies.
I am about to implement FlashBackup to backup some huge Windows file servers using the NBU 6 advanced client. Currently the backups of those file servers are very slow (the old traversing the filesystem issue). We will use Flashbackup to do block level backups. Flashbackup uses Windows VSS to ensure a consistent disk image during the backup, which in turn will utilise either VxVM or storage array snapshot capabilities to achieve this.
VSP is, by comparison, fairly dumb :PAlthough I'm talking purely from theory - haven't tested it yet.I can't talk about .pst files. You should probably investigate using the NBU agent for Exchange.

But I have found NBU 5.1 to perform backups with status 0 all the
time. the only time I see a "1" status is if there is a file it cannot open, but
even so, its not been a critical file.

When you enable VSS/VSP - take a look at this
document.

Might be of a point of reference. One of my sites was continually
getting 156 messages and they called Veritas... (before calling Symantec. Guess
what they told them to do??)

Answer turn off VSS Well it was disabled, and the backups
have worked solid since.

I
also come from a NBU 3.4 with OTM was used (open transaction manager) and that
still had issues, although in some cases, it was
ok.

I
dont list .pst files :-)

Not yet - I'm still looking at it in a test
  environment.

How would you backup open windows files on Windows 2000
without it? It's quite likely that people leave Outlook open on their desktop
at the end of the day and in the past this has caused open file issues (as
well as any documents they might be working on).

Cons: Backups can fail with status
  156
Pros: Well I dont use it - and even with AD, its not even used.
and yet it still gets backed up!

VSP/VSS within Netbackup will need disk space. Have you tried it
  yet?

[Veritas-bu] NB 6 and VSP on Windows
Hi,

I'm a bit of a
newbie to Netbackup (but learning shed-loads rather rapidly) and have a
question about VSP for open file backups. I've had some people who use this
and others who don't although I've not had any reasons for either
case.
I'm wondering if
it's generally a good idea on things like Windows file servers (where
especially pst files are often open), DHCP and DDNS servers (non Active
Directory DDNS). On Windows 2003, it seems VSS is better for open file
backups (although this may be wrong).
What are the
cons with using VSP?

Cheers,

Re: [Veritas-bu] Export and Import NetBackup configuration

2006-05-09 Thread Dave Markham
It is exactly what i do for a DR process. Only caveat is need to have
the hostname of the backup server to be the same as its embedded into
the catalogue and with different host names i couldnt get the robot and
certain things to work correctly.
