Re: [Veritas-vx] recovering lost vxvm private data from vxprint -hvt and vxprint -htg outputs

2007-05-17 Thread Biju Krishnan

Hi Arjun,

Is there any reason why you cannot encapsulate the root disk one more time??
What caused the problem??

Essentially the reason you need to encapsulate the root disk is to mirror
it. Re-encapsulate, reboot and mirror should work.

The technote for recovering DG's is

http://entkb.symantec.com/security/output/a180321.html

But your is a rootdg, I have never recovered a rootdg using the procedure.

Is there any way I can retrieve the lost private data from the saved
outputs(prioir to the disaster struck) of vxprint -htg rootdg ?

Thanks for any hint/help you may offer!

Re: [Veritas-vx] Disconnecting HBA

2007-05-17 Thread Khurram Shahzad
I would remove the access via access logix (use navicli/navisphere) for one of
the paths say SPA2 (500601621060162C) or SPB2 (5006016A1060162C). All paths
would be failed to only one SP i.e. one HBA on the host. (I assume you are
using Solaris) Then unconfigure that HBA via "cfgadm" and remove the dead paths
via "devfsadm" or "luxadm", if required. If you are using powerpath, then
remove paths from it as well via "powermt/powercf".

Then connect/zone/configure that HBA to the different CLARiiON and/or SAN
fabric.

It's not so much that you can retrieve the private data as using the
vxprint may allow you to create new VxVM objects in the exact location
as the old objects. If this is done, all the data should be there.

This is a bit trickier with encapsulated disks. Was there something in
rootdg other than the OS?

Usually I use rootdg only for the OS, allowing me to simply recreate it
without worring about losing data.

Re: [Veritas-vx] recovering lost vxvm private data from vxprint -hvtand vxprint -htg outputs

2007-05-17 Thread Myers, Mike
You can't recover the private area directly, but if you rebuild logical
volumes that are on the exact same boundaries, the file systems inside
there will still be intact (presuming nothing wrote to those areas of
the disk during the disaster).

Probably the best instructions on doing something like this is the
rebuilding of EMC BCV volumes so that they get a new disk group ID --
searching on "Veritas" and "BCV" should find the procedures. They
usually depend on a specific format of "vxprint" having been saved
beforehand so you may have to adjust the procedures to fit what data you
have.

Essentially it'll be a series of "vxmake" commands specifying the
device, offset and lengths of the originals from the saved output for
the subdisks, then building those into plexed and finally volumes.

Best of luck!

Cheers,
