For Alaska, you will need some streamers; hairwing and feather. Skunks, and
this type always do well, You need some bigger flys (10 and above) for the
bigger fish, Smaller for Graylings.

You bet Tony. I have several variations of it also.

I plan to take a bunch of Clouser Deep Minnows also. I have taken many
different varieties of fish with it.

One of my favorites is the Arizona Peacock Lady and the variation that Gordon
Mankins taught me. The Apache Lady.

I also plan on some dry flies, some CDC flies and a bunch of the old
traditional Elk Hair Caddis, a Royal Wulff , Some Half Backs and some Full
Backs, Humpies, Mosquitos, Griffiths Knats, Adams, Renegads, RW Nymphs, Prince
Nymphs, RS40's.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-04-23 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
Had all the pens that go trout fishing devoted themselves to jotting down
notes about why the big fish did not gobble the grasshopper, we would have lost
many a page of sunshine, fresh air, and good fellowship, and instead, reaped a
crop of fireside disko troops who thought like fish.

[VFB] Re: low cost tying station Under $25)

2009-04-23 Thread J Balmer
I recently made a portable tying desk out of my old cabinet fronts. I
replaced the kitchen cabinets saved the oak fronts; doors frames. I took
one of the smaller doors frames apart, cut the frame so I had a 2
vertical back right side to attach to the door front drilled holes in
the side piece for tools. I haven't decided whether I'm going to put dowels
in the back for spools or attach a rotating rack for spools dubbing. I
drilled two holes in the front edge to attach my Nor vise. Now I can move my
operations to the first floor when Marcie has hens over for basket weaving.
I'll have a picture of the prototype later.

2009-04-23 Thread John C. Bennett
I'm game, but the only thing is that I am currently remodeling my craft room,
so all my tying happens on a small table that I have to clean up every time I
am done. I have a vanity that I use for my tying table. It is nice because I
can lift the lid to it and it has a big mirror that I can see the back side of
the fly as I am tying. I'll post a picture when I can.

I guess my tying table/station cost more than $25 when it was first bought. I
have converted a vanity that belonged to my wife when she was a teenager. It
has multiple drawers and places to put stuff. The best part about using that is
the lid opens up to more storage, but the lid has a mirror mounted to its
underside. I can lift up the lid and see the backside of the fly that I am
tying without having to use the rotation of my vise. It also is great for
taking pictures of finished flies, with one picture you can capture both sides.

By June, we are usually in the hi 80's -low 90's F*And we will have
the usual afternoon thunder boomers. The cold fronts

are long gone.

The fishing is GREAT. One of the best times of the year. If you catch a

 Not quite as cheap but...
try you local salerooms for second hand furniture and get a writing bureau
 bookcase
 this ones on English eBay
Item No. 160329244098 (Cut and paste number into eBay search bar)
plenty of storage foldaway work top and bookcase all in one place.

With the recession there should be more of this sort of thing turning up at
 auction houses

I came home to find my Edwardian solid walnut bureau full of fly tying gear
been emptied onto the floor and moved downstairs by Linda. I now have a
modern oak one in my office as a tying desk, it just not as nice...

Here is an article I found regarding building a budget fly tying station.

I spent two weeks fishing Alaska, one off the highway on the way to Denali, the
other on the Kenai peninsular, where are you going? I have all my notes and
fly lists, maps, connections with several folks who live and fly fish the state.

We rented a motorhome for the trip, had 9 adults on board the two rigs, and we
all caught more fish than we could count! I'm willing to share, it's a great
state and if it wasn't so darn cold and dark in the winter I could handle
staying up there.

[VFB] Fly tying bench/station

2009-04-23 Thread John C. Bennett
Here are pictures of the converted vanity that i use for my fly tying. I am
currently remodeling our craft room so all my fly tying stuff is boxed up or in
a travel case, so it looks real clean. The best part that i like about the
tying station is the mirror. I can take unique pictures of tied flies. The
picture would capture both sides of the fly.
