The hush puppies are some of the best I have had. Well today we
stopped there to pick up a couple of platters for lunch and I asked if
they had found a place to set up shop. They bought the Village Wheel
and are in the process of rebuilding it now. It should ne open by
April I think in time for the Sowbug.

They will have real sea food along with what the restaurants have.

[VFB] Re: SALTWATER SWAP ARRIVALS

2015-11-04 Thread Bob Hendry
Hi Peggy,

I am sorry that my flies haven't arrived yet; it seems they never reached
you. The mail man delivered them to me today!

They were mailed Wednesday, two weeks ago today. They suffered a severe
mishap while in the postal system. The soap box that I mail them in was
crushed beyond recognition. The note that was attached said that the
package was discovered when a heavy load on a pallet was moved. The outer
envelope was shredded, but she was able to tape the return envelope
together, and return it to me. (BTW, only 2 flies were in the package,
both damaged pretty badly.)

I can start re-tying this evening and have them ready to mail again by
Friday at the latest. That is if y'all are willing to hang loose for
another week. If not, please let me know. Thanks.

Also, I tied Clouser's Deep Minnow in black & red. Think I'll do 'em in
the more traditional chartreuse & white this go-around

Cheers,

Re: [VFB] Catskills / Roscoe NY, USA - Any Info, send it my way

2015-03-22 Thread Bob Hendry
Last June we spent a week at the Rosco Campgrounds
<http://roscoecampsite.com/> in one of their 'camper trailers'. It was
very nice, and surprisingly roomy. My son (21) and youngest daughter
(17) came with, and there was ample room. We prepared most meals at
home base, and hit the Roscoe Diner twice.

As you come in to town, just after you cross the Beaverkill, there is a
grocery store in one of the first buildings on the left. It had the
basics, but, as Peggy noted, the grocery in Livingston Manor is much
larger.

I would recommend you to stop in the Baxter House
<http://www.baxterhouse.net/> and chat with Ken (if he's not out on the
river) or his wife. They have a pretty good gauge on where to fish and
what to throw at 'em. Again, as Peggy said, the fishing is very good
right out 20 feet in front of your trailer.

Along with what others have noted, for the non-fishers in your family,
there is excellent opportunities for antiquing, shopping, antiquing,
touring, antiquing, sightseeing, and, of course, they can always go
antiquing! My wife is a teacher, and after the school year, she just
needs some time to chill. She read 17 books on her Nook in the week.

Have a great trip, and I wish you way more success on the water than I
had last year!

The Reynolds Hotel has several multi room arrangements in the Motel

For eating out a good pizza or Italion is Ranoldies(sp) in town, the
Roscoe Diner. There is also Creekside Cabins.

I don't wade waist high, so the fishing is good anywhere. also the
Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum is a half day, and there are
plenty of grounds to tour. Roscoe is a very small town and has no
grocery, Livingston Manor has a small but very nice grocery, you have
to order sandwiches from the deli, they are to die for.

More to follow, I'll consult with my kids owning friends for more.

So this summer, my wife finally gave in and is letting me stop for 2 or

questions and possible hiccups that need to be solved before I go.

That's where you kind folks come in. I'll be frank - my knowledge of
the Catskills are only what the sporadic fly fishing book, a topo map,
and the fly fishing videos have shown me. A guide is almost a necessity
when it comes to this rusty ol' caster, flopping the line on the water
like a cowboy roping at a rodeo... I'll need all the help I can get!
Been almost a half year since on the water, possibly more, due to
medical reasons; I won't go into it here, but feel free to private
message me if you'd like details. Point is, I'd love to fish the fabled
waters, catching anything (a baseball counts as catching something,
right?), not being picky about having to catch numbers of fish, or size
of fish, but preferably catching /at least one/ fish over the course of
2 or 3 days. Any recommendations for which waterways to target, for a
not so great (i.e. horrible) caster? Here's the kicker - due to the
medical issues, I can't be hiking huge distances (two miles each way is
about it, if I obey the doc), and can't be wading higher than, well,
I'll say waist, but if my doc had a say it would be up to my knee - I
made the mistake of asking him... Anyhow, heard the Williweemoc (sp?)
fits the bill, but I don't know enough about the area to say one way or
the other.

Other considerations, I'll have my wife, and kids (one in elementary
school, other a toddler) with me on this trip. They won't be fly
fishing with me, but will need lodging and something to do for 2-3
days. Suggestions for lodging, eateries, and things to do while I'm
enjoying the fishing would be awesome, and would help me keep this as a
"good idea" in my wife's head :) We have no problem with the idea to
"rough it", but due to the medical issues, need potable water, and need
electricity to run medical "stuff". Anyone who knows how to get a
portable battery pack type thing, that outputs electricity in a way that
you can just plug in a normal (USA type) electric plug, that would be

Re: [VFB] Re: POPPER SWAP CLOSED

2014-10-22 Thread Bob Hendry

Hi Al,

I thought they were supposed to be to you by 15 Oct?? No?

Well, if that's NOT the case, I'll just have to continue to engage in my
newest hobby; being of Scottish heritage, I figger it's about time that I
develop an appreciation for single-malt scotch whisky. So far, I have
proven at least four premises:

*1. “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely
enough.” - Mark Twain 2. “There is no bad whisky. There are only some
whiskys that aren’t as good as others.” - Raymond Chandler 3. “The
water was not fit to drink. To make it palatable, we had to add whisky. By
diligent effort, I learned to like it.” -Winston Churchill 4. “Love
makes the world go round? Not at all. Whisky makes it go round twice as
fast.” - Compton MacKenzie*
Cheers,

Bob Hendry

Hi Allan,

Sorry that I'm very late - we've had a lot going on with family problems.
My mother-in-law died, and we've been occupied upgrading her house to sell
it. The swap completely slipped my mind. I'm tying them now and you
should have them by this time next week.

Again, I'm sorry for the lateness . . . Cheers,

[VFB] Roman Moser?

2014-06-28 Thread Bob Hendry
Howdy Y'all,

Do any of you know of a link to Roman Moser's videos that are NOT dubbed
over in Russian? I'd like to view his videos, but can't understand the
Russian. (In one of my earlier incarnations, I was a German linguist in
the Army - so his native (??) German shouldn't be a problem.)

(As a side note, I wonder if Roman Moser is related to the great Italian
cyclist, Francesco Moser? While living in Germany, I was a member of a
German cycling team from 1980 thru 1984, and my bicycle was built by
Francesco Moser. Still have it in the attic.)

We're sraying at the Roscoe. Campsites in a very nice camper no more than 10

MEMORIAL DAY

"I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost to
maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States." --John
Adams

Memorial Day provides a stark contrast between the best of our nation's
Patriot sons and daughters versus the worst of our nation's civilian culture
of consumption.

Amid the sparse, reverent observances of the sacrifices made by millions of
American Patriots who paid the full price for Liberty, in keeping with their
sacred oaths, we are inundated at every turn with the commercialization of
Memorial Day by vendors who are too ignorant and/or selfish to honor this
day in accordance with its purpose.

Indeed, Memorial Day has been sold out, along with Washington's Birthday,
Independence Day, Veterans, Thanksgiving and Christmas Days. And it's no
wonder, as government schools no longer teach civics or any meaningful
history, and courts have excluded God (officially) from the public square.

In his essay "The Contest In America," 19th-century libertarian philosopher
John Stuart Mill wrote, "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of
things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which
thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. A man who has nothing which he cares
more about than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature
who has no chance at being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of
better men than himself."

It is that "decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling" which
accounts for why so many "miserable creatures" have downgraded Memorial Day
to nothing more than a date to exploit for commercial greed and avarice.
While units large and small of America's Armed Forces stand in harm's way
around the globe, many Americans are too preoccupied with beer, barbecue and
baseball to pause and recognize the priceless burden borne by generations of
our uniformed Patriots. Likewise, many politicos will use Memorial Day as a
soapbox to feign Patriotism, while in reality they are in constant violation
of their oaths to our Constitution.

That notwithstanding, there are still tens of millions of genuine American
Patriots who will set aside the last Monday in May to honor all those fallen
Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coastguardsmen who have refreshed the
Tree of Liberty with their blood, indeed with their lives, so that we might
remain the proud and free. My family, which humbly

Re: [VFB] RE: SowBug 2014

2014-03-10 Thread Bob Hendry

Thanks Wayne!

I was just fixin' to ask Tony what I should put in my fly box.  The
only White river hatch chart I've found (
http://www.flyflinger.com/pdf%20files/offhatch.pdf ) says:

January–March:  During the dead of winter, scuds, sowbugs, and sculpins
are always available to fish,  Dead and dying threadfin shad will get
pulled through the dams in waves if there is sufficient generation or a
sudden start to generation after a prolonged shudown  Tiny Blue-Winged
Olives are possible on calm afternoons and usually in localized areas.
The main heavy caddis hatch starts in March and usually begins to peak
by the last week.  Winter stoneflies are a rarity in the tailwaters,
but do occur, especially near feeder streams

I'm curious if Tony agrees?

Cheers,

Yesterday we finally got the heat back.  The coldest it got in the

By the way, the Beaverkill Valley Inn has 1 mile of private water catch and release water on the upper Beaverkill just like 2 miles north of Lew Beach, NY. The 'wall pool' is like no more than 300 feet away where I have caught 22 inch rainbows at the head of the pool many times because the BVI is catch and release. This pool is quite long. There are three great pools to fish and twice as many riffles also. There is the bend pool further south, may 800 feet away. If you are lucky enough to know someone from the Beaverkill Trout Club a couple of miles south of the BVI, they have 6 miles of private water. You would like to fish within walking distance of the motel/Bed & Breakfast and be in NIRVANA? Well this is it!!! it sounds like you want to make a summer trip. The water will be cool enough to hold the fish even through August and warm enough to wet wade. Bing Maps the Birds Eye view of the address and you will get an idea of their property.

The nice thing about the BVI, is that you must cross the Barnhart Road bridge to get to their property. Their property is separated from the Beaverkill Valley Road by the river. From the BVI you can get to the East Branch of the Delaware, which has many access points for wade fishing. In August it will still be ice cold from water releases early in the morning, 40 degree range from the bottom of the Pepacton Reservoir Dam in Downsville NY. It is like natures own A/C on a 95 degree August day. They have an indoor swimming pool, indoor basketball court and a self serve ice cream bar. Breakfast is part of your room charge. Last year weekdays were $167/ night and Sunday is a weekday. They serve lunch and dinner, if need be at an additional price. Full course dinners were $50/person with soup, salad, entre and desert. Sometimes with dinner, they have a cocktail hour with hors d'œuvres. It just depends on how many people will be at dinner. They have a nice little bar with go
od spirits a plenty, fine wine and many craft beers. Tipping is not permitted. If they are not serving dinner, you are allowed to eat at the homeowners association club bar in Lew Beach.
There is a wonderful wrap around porch for sitting and reading. There are many trails for hiking but it is black bear country so please bring bear mace and/or fog horns. Just google either and make your choice. I alays carry bear mace, a small horn and one 5 inch bowie knife as a last resort.

>From the BVI, you can go fish the covered bridge on the upper Beaverkill NY state park area a few miles away. There is a deep pool there. You can go north on route 206 out of Roscoe and before you cross the Beaverkil River Bridge, there is a torn off on your left to the Beaverkill River. Back down 206 towards Roscoe, there is another acces point. And of Course there is the famous Junction Pool (the Beaverkill and Willowemoc meet to form the lower Beaverkill.

There is a cute little creek with two turn offs for fishing, Mongaup Creek. It is up Mongaup Road which is off of DeBruce Road out of Livinston Manor. Mongaup is a tributory to the Upper Willowemoc, up stream from Livingston Manor. The turnoff to the pool, which I always fish, is the one with the v formed plank dam, the second one after driving up on Mongaup Road. Do not step out onto the dam. It is slick as goat shit. Plus I am not sure that it would support any weight because of its age. A vist to the hatchery on Mongaup creek is worthwhile. It is fed by 1,500 gallons daily of spring water, which just emptys into the lower Mongaup Creek where the plank dam is, insuring water even during a hot dry summer month.

Just plop a size 16 royal wullf to the far side and let the back wash drift it into the foam and pretty little 14 inch rainbows will bolt from the depth underneath the foam and take your presentation. Mongaup Creek houses the Mongaup Creek NY State Hatchery further on up the road so google map it and you will find the road to the aforementioned fishing spot.

Depending on the time of year, which you may go, you will have to check local info as to local craft fairs etc.

The only fly shop, to which I go, is the Catskills Fly Shop. Dennis, the owner, is very friendly but do not be put off by his sarcasm, if he displays any. It is so much a part of his charm. He will give you all the help, which you need, to choose the right flies etc. He will chit chat with you endlessly especially when he goes out

[VFB] Vacation in the Poconos or Catskills

2014-01-02 Thread Bob Hendry

Greetings, and Happy New
Year to all!

I am soliciting suggestions from any of you familiar with fishing in NE
PA and W NY.  Instead of vacationing again at the beach in Wildwood,
I'd like to take the family up a bit further north in the mountains
(Poconos or Catskills) where fly fishing opportunities abound, AND
where the GIRLS, who are NOT fishergirls, can find alternative
entertainment.  I'm a little familiar with Hawley, PA (Lake Wallenpaupack - used to fish there as a
child).  That was more than 50 years ago . . .

They would like to visit museums, historic sites & points of
interest, local craft fairs, etc. The boy and I would like to fish
within walking distance of the motel/Bed & Breakfast.

In other words, a NIRVANA.  8 ~ }  Any and all suggestions are very
welcome.

Re: [VFB] Something bad but good, but weird- what else from Dr. D?

2013-10-10 Thread Bob Hendry

Hi Don,

I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes in 1989 - 3 years after retiring
from the Army.  And I hear you loud and clear.  And most assuredly,
life goes on; it certainly can be dealt with.  Diet, exercise (and I
don't mean running marathons) and medication can keep your blood sugars
under control.  You should start walking around the block, or in your
case, cross-country skiing.  Watch your carbohydrates, and test your
blood at least twice a day - or whatever your Doc prescribes.

As for vision, I found a place online that sells clear bi-focals with
no prescription up top and magnifiers in the bottom,  Can't remember
where, but you can Google it.

Best of luck to you, and stay healthy!

Cheers,

Bob Hendry

On 10/10/2013 2:09 PM, Don Ordes wrote:
I'm not normally one to post every medical situation here,
but this one is sorta' tying related.

About 5 weeks ago I started feeling pretty down- not sick, but just
really dragging, like the energy button was set on 2 out of 10. Went on
a 3-week trip and developed the tell-tale symptoms of sugar diabetes.
Was not a good trip, as all I did was drink everything in sight and
then pee it out. I lost close to 30 pounds of water-weight and I'm told
muscle weight also. And Cheryl had to do the bigger share of driving,
as my eyes had gotten blurry. Any of you with diabetes know the score,
and those who support/know them know it 2nd hand. I was in acidosis big
time.

So I get back, order a blood test, and set up an appointment with my
doc. He moved my appointment to the next day when he got the results,
and then threw my butt in the hospital. My blood sugar on the test was
over 400, and when they checked me in, it was over 700. I felt 'OK',
and was cutting up with everyone in the ER check-in, being such a sweet
guy and all. Got a room on the heart floor because of my a-fib (for
monitoring), and they re-hydrated me and started me on insulin to bring
the sugars down. I responded immediately and the sugars came down into
the high 100's in two days and they kicked me out. My sugars now hover
around 100, and have been like that for 2 weeks now- very stable. I had
adverse reactions to Metforin (sp?), so the doc took me off of that.
Had an ultra-sound done of my heart and all A-OK there.

Now for the part about fly tying. The doc said it could take months for
my eye blurriness to clear up, and then my vision might not equal what
I had. Ha.!  I pulled a fast one on them. My vision cleared up while I
was still in the hospital, and I noticed I was having trouble seeing
with my glasses. After I got home my eyes totally corrected and I mean
actually reversed themselves. For the 1st time since I was 12 I don't
need and can see fine without glasses. With my glasses it's like
opening my eyes underwater. So now, without glasses, I can see a size
22 dry fly float by. Who-hooo! It's not 20-20, but I've never had that-
even with glasses. Bought me some cool shades for the 1st time, too.

Wait...that's not fly tying. This is fly tying related. I used to amaze
everyone that I could tie a #32 Mustad royal coachman with the naked
eye. Well, no more. Closer than 16", any fly gets blurry, so I need
reading glasses for the 1st time in my life. I don't like the
shape-shifting as I look around for stuff, so I may go to a magnifier.
With reading glasses, I can still see just enough to tie a #32, but
nothing like the macro-vision I had before.

For fishing outlook, I put much of the water-weight back on, but have
lost 20 pounds now based on diet and exercise. I'm walking on the
treadmill every day and have actually started jogging on it, which I
haven't been able to do for years due to back problems, perif. neurop.,
and TGN.  Now with the back and TGN fixed, and fibromyalgia in
recession, it's possible, but not comfortable, to jog for a few minutes
at a time to really get my heart rate up during a 20 min. work-out.  So
I'm looking to wading with more confidence with better lateral
stability.

So, now that everything's working good, we're having early snow storms
that are making national news for damage, and I'm right there with tons
of tree damage and consequences. So, no fishing until spring, probably.

Dreams of Tight Lines,

DonO

Hi Tony,

A former colleague sent me this video demonstrating how we used to earn
a living.  Thought you too might enjoy it.  So turn up your speaker
volume and let er rip!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=9jEHqhSCnEg

I flew with the 281st Assault Helicopter Co, the predecessor to the
160th,  in support of the 5th Special Forces Group, on my first tour in
Vietnam.  Sometimes I really miss the ol' 'wop-wop-wop' of the old
Hueys. The rotor systems on the Blackhawks are way more advanced than
the UH-1, and simply don't sound as "cool" . . .

Hi Wayne,

Just got back from a week up at Deep Creek Lake.  Had a wonderful

We'll be heading back up to Wildwood the week of July 21, so Aug 3rd

hitch a ride with you.

I haven't really had a chance to look at the hooks I got from FTD.
All's I know is there sure are a bunch of 'em.

Robby & I are planning to cruise the Mattawoman Creek one day this
week on our pontoons, from Indian Head to Gen. Smallwood State Park.
Then, Lord willin' and the creek don't rise, either Myrtle Grove of
Gilbert Run next week before heading up to NJ.  How about you - have
you been able to get out on the water much?

Looking forward to seeing you on Aug 3rd.  Stay safe & don't breath

[VFB] Another Question for Rick Zeiger

2013-05-11 Thread Bob Hendry

Hi Rick,

First off, my Black Ghost Marabou flies are winging their way to you as
we speak - they were mailed yesterday.  My apologies for being so
late.  No excuse Sir!

I was looking at your FAOL
Fly of The Week (Bob Anderson Panfish Flies).  Very nice!
Question:  where do you get 'punch yarn'?  I have a little that my
M-in-L donated, but I can't find it anywhere.  The ladies at Jo-Ann
Fabrics never heard of it.

Thanks.  Stay well & best regards to the wife,

[VFB] Tying Class Saturday?

2013-05-01 Thread Bob Hendry

Hi Wayne,

This may come as a shock to you, but I think my mind may be playing
tricks on me (AGAIN!)

Am I correct that your daughter is graduating from college this week?
I seem to remember that you won't be going up to Davisdonville to the
fs-ff tying class on Saturday??  If I'm mistaken, pls let me know.

Rob and I had a blast up at the Savage River this past weekend.  We
never did connect with the guys from TU, but still had fun, until we
got rained out Sunday morning . . .

Cheers,

The reason why I liked Gudebrod so much is that it was very thin and
very strong, it was able to untwist and lay down flat without fraying
and I was able to get thinner build up on the head of a fly.

Hi Scott,

Wow!  You and Allan are indeed quidk!  I had started to reply to Wayne,
took a break to walk Dooley, came back in and finished my response.
Meanwhile, you both responded . . .

I'll try it with the embroidery thread.

What'cha tying for the Jimmy D swap?  I'm going to tie Black Ghost
Marabou in # 10.  I just received an order from Edge Angling for Bird
fur, but they were out of black - it's on backorder.  So they may be
purple or olive . . .

Just make sure that embroidery thread isn't cotton. You will
probably have to use something like Danville, Uni, or Wapsi (UTC) 210
denier since Gudebrod G was between 270 and 303 denier. Wapsi also
makes a 280 denier, and just so happens to be made from polyester, the
same as Gudebrod. The others are nylon. Does it make a difference? Buy
one of each and decide for yourself. My two favorites for Gudebrod
alternatives are Hook and Hackle's Euro threads and the new Veevus
thread. Both are made of polyester, but they also come in very fine
sizes only.

Gudebrod was the supplier for Orvis' thread, but since they went out of
business there is no telling who makes their thread now. Since Al
mentioned Orvis I checked their website and they do carry their thread
in a size G. For $2 it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

A little test here. I'm in a disagreement with the default mail
app in my Samsung tablet. When I write the word 'today' in a vfb-mail
it turns into a link, both in the mail that goes into the Sent folder
and in the mail I get back. Clicking on it then launches the default
calendar app and creates a new post there... today of course, no matter
how old the mail is.

  Question: Does the word 'today'
in my mails LOOK like a link to you?

Test: I have only seen it in
mails from myself (and in mails where l'm quoted), but on the other
hand I haven't yet found a mail with the word 'today' written by
someone else. So if a couple of others could send a mail with the word
'today' in, I would be grateful.

PS. Do not REPLY to this one. Just create an entirely
new mail.

[VFB] Substitute for Gudebrod "G" Thread?

2013-04-10 Thread Bob Hendry

Hi Tony,

I'd like to try to learn to weave a Mayfly body (extended)  Your CD is
great for this, but I can't find the Gudebrod thread that yoou use.
Are you (or anyone else) aware of a suitable substitued?  Colors?

I watched several YouTube videos that used everything from antron yarn
to embrodery thread.  My goal is to mimic the tight, small body you
made; I'm afraid that antron might be too heavy?  Thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: [VFB] Anyone ever dealt with Edge Angling Co, Middletown, RI??

2013-01-01 Thread Bob Hendry

Thank you for your responses.

As things turned out, the problem I had was largely my fault. During the
period mid-November - late-December, I've had issues with my email client,
which led to several email client changes. What I didn't realize is that
each change resulted in a different 'from' email address. The emails that
I sent to Edge Angling came from different email addresses, confusing their
server into thinking that they were from different folks.

Secondly, each of the emails that I sent out was in reply to the email that
I received early on from Peter G., thereby circumventing the 'support
ticket system' on their web page.

Yesterday I spoke with Peter; he was very helpful and apologetic. He has
assured me that the order will be re-shipped as soon as they can restock
several of the items. Consequently, my confidence in Edge Angling has been
reaffirmed.

Thanks again! Cheers, Happy New Year, and Tight Lines!

[VFB] Anyone ever dealt with Edge Angling Co, Middletown, RI??

2012-12-29 Thread Bob Hendry
Has anyone dealt with Edge Angling?

I'm having a problem with them. Back in November, I placed an order with
them for crosscut rabbit strips to the tune of $108. I never received the
order. In early December, I contacted them and inquired about the status of
the order - they responded that the order had shipped, and that the
tracking number shows that it had been delivered on Nov 19th. It certainly
was not delivered to my address.

I have since contacted them 6 times to ask for their assistance - haven't
received a single reply. I'm really getting frustrated, and don't know what
to do from here.

Has anyone had a similar experience with Edge Angling, or another supplier?
Any suggestions on how best to proceed from here?

I'm appreciative of any response/suggestions you can provide. Thanks.

Cheers, and Happy New Year!
