[VFB] Re: Thunder Creek Streamers
Hello Walter, I was so looking forward to this swap that I am bummed that I have to drop. My father is in the hospital and I know this will impact time at my vice. This along with forthcoming work travel is forcing me to drop this time. I am hoping there is enough time to get a replacement. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks. [VFB] Re: Streamer
Hi Tony, >From being in the northeast; tying and fishing streamers, I will add a few comments. This fly needs some peacock herl, topping, or bucktail to fill in the open space...of course becoming Carrie Stevens Ghost like. The first thing I always look at are the finish on the heads especially for plate flies. I recommend using some UTC black fine thread. Untwist this thread so it lays flat sort of like very mini floss. You have to untwist with a slight bobbin spin every 5-10 wraps. This allows you to make a sweet head with no imperfections by laying the thread to fill in uneveness. Then use 1 coat of penetrating cement like flexament or sally hansens. then apply 2 -3 coats of hard as hull head cement. Give at least 4-6 hours in between coats. Or you can use rod building epoxy once (this is less non-yellowing over time) This type of finished head commands attention. The marabou throat also looks out of place. I would prefer to see a feather or barbule throat. Instead of the chart tail, use a crest topping - it will also look regal. Marabou is fantastic for streamers and it is fun as you can add a lot of flash. I like to use marabou as an underwing. You can wet it first before you tie it in and when it dries it has a little less bulk and complements both bucktail and feather wings. A marabou throat looks more appealing with this type of wing construction. I just tied up some magog smelts for a client and I need to take some pictures of what I am talking about. Certainly like the jungle cock cheek and eye. This also looks great on a lighter color wing. Where as silver pheasant makes a great cheek for dark wings Can't wait to see your next one. Chappy. [VFB] Re: Thunder Creek Streamers
Me too...hehe.. Obviously the sculpin is more a color modification. I will no doubt blend 4 different bucktail colors with copper flash - olives, browns, and orange / pumpkin...anything that bites a chili pepper will attack this low profile morsel as well It will not have pectoral fins...unless I am feeling a little "ORDES" like. hehehe. [VFB] Re: Rope Dub Muscles
Uni-Mono Thin. Broke it a few time when I overspun. But no problem. I do not plan to respool 6 lb test however, BTW - how do you spool it without twisting? I am sure you have some line horror stories about respooling to the bobbin the first few times... I furl my own leaders with a power drill. Now trying to do that on a little spool? yikes. [VFB] Rope Dub Muscles
Hi, I played around with Australian Possum - fur and hair cut right from the skin and rope dubbed. I like the results but without a binder this stuff is somewhat tough to work with. I have about 20% of the material on the top of the desk when done as there is nothing I added to bind it together. But I achieved my goal. However, when I was done I thought I had arthritis - which I don't. My fingers were burning with pain. So Don, as a master of rope dub - I went back and viewed your DVD. You have mighty fingers and I noticed you have little 'guns' on each one - similar to my biceps...lol. I also saw a little anchor tattooed on the side of your index finger. Were you in the Navy? (Sorry, couldn't resist.) Tell us about those rope dub muscles and how much more practice do I need before the pain goes away. What I found interesting is until you have a tight rope on the thread, you really can't let go - at least with Possum. At that point I used the dubbing clamp to spin and give my fingers a little break. Looks like I need more practice - but I was very pleased with the results. [VFB] Rope Dub .. to Tube Flies..
Nice work Don. I turned on the video and never took my eyes off of it. I wanted more. Well done. As I mentioned, I have rope dubbed for many years (the first time the article appeared on VFB) and although I have no problem with it, I hardly ever play with it. I know what dubbed body I want and use the rope dubbing process to achieve it. However, I realize I do not fully take advantage of the fact that the dubbing is loose on the thread. As I mentioned, I like Uni 8/0 and it is not what I call smooth. Ans since when I use dubbing it is quite sparse as I seldom tie a fly that doesn't have 4 or 5 components where the dubbing is only 1 of them. So a lot of new ideas were going through my mind watching the video. Another thing is that I do teach rope dub techniques in my fly tying classes but only as the best way to get dubbing (including peacock) on the fly. I could easily have two classes with just working on rope dubbing with a lot of materials. Some of the class will struggle with the rope dub but after a quick walk around everyone get its fairly quickly. But again, rope dub the way I have been teaching it has been with a purpose and a goal. I sadly have missed the point. That being - rope dubbing should not have to have a purpose and a goal. It is the only way I dub - it always can do what I want. But now I am thinking, what are the bounds of rope dubbing? I surely do not know. It has been a long time since I have put the hook in the vise without completing a fly. I am getting excited thinking about going through materials and really seeing what it can do. A few come to mind - Z-lon dubbing (from Blue Ribbon) as this stuff is a pain to dub. Chickabou feathers and underfeathers. Of course Australian Possum (thanks Don - that patch is beautiful - I will not dye this - it is so good natural.) I am now thinking of creating a bushy usual with dubbed snowshoe - just trimmed. No doubt it would be twice a buoyant. Seal, arctic fox. Now I am thinking about adding chopped rubber legs, chopped unique hair. Don Ordes, nice work. I will take good care of this video. My kids 8 and 4 actually liked it although they did not see the whole thing. But I can set up the vises and dump a ton of material on the table, and I am sure they would enjoy playing. Of course - I would set my 4 yr old up with a tube adapter so he can make - CAT TOYS. Use plastic tubes. I like making tube flies, especially my 3-eyed smelt. As a troller for salmon, I don't need to cast them so mimicking a smelt -which is 3D - in that there are 3 eyes and 3 cheeks that meet perfectly around the tube - are fun to make and fun to fish. But I will say other than that, I am not too big on tube flies over conventional. Take care.I am so glad I now have so much room to grow and improve on rope dubbing. Thanks again Don. [VFB] Re: Digest for vfb-mail@googlegroups.com - 25 Messages in 5 Topics
HI Tony, The last two years have been super busy - travelling about 50% of my time for work including 4 - 2 weeks trips to Asia. Can't complain. Wife and boys are doing well. 8 and 4 - and next year I think fly fishing for my 8 year old. Of course I have bought him his own outfit since he was 6.Hopefully he will make time this year. But he is quite the sk8trboy. Got a rip stick for his 8th birthday. I digress. I still make lures for Chappy's Guide but the fly tying teaching has been tough due to my travel. I actually got out and did some fly fishing on the Beaverkill. Hit this pool three times at the end of the day. Worked the pool intensely and of course the last hour of sunlight the fish rose to the surface to feed. I was sight fishing with a tandem CDC Caddis - 1 size 16 and the other size 18 with 6X tippet. The challenge is to be efficient with the cast, the mend, the hook, the fight, the release, and repositioning in the pool to work unspooked fish. I would be able to score about 8 fish in a hour when all said and done. I had it to myself and it was so awesome. Nice browns and all released. I always make about an hour a week at the vise. And with all of the miles and hotel points - I am taking the family to Hawaii in late Feb for 11 nights.I still can't seem to make time to finish the 4 sets of Green Highlander full dresses that I have wings sets married for over the last 4 years. But if that is my biggest gripe, I will take it. I hope you are doing well. Hope you had a great summer with lots of fish!!! Chappy. [VFB] Chili Pepper 3 Swap - Future Ungulate Swap....
Hello, I was able to finally update the swap with pictures. Sorry for the delay. http://www.chappysguide.com/html/chili_3.html I was very pleased with the participation and the quality and innovation in the flies. A fun annual event. You will see we have a couple of fishing / people pictures on the site. Thanks Jim and Tony. For the rest of the swappers, if you want to send me a picture anytime - I will post it next to your fly. I plan to add mine next spring when I fish the Elk Hair Chili Pepper or maybe this winter if I get out. Remember, this page will never be removed (I hope). So it is your page as a tyer to add to. I hope all is well and thanks again for your participation. BTW - I might be up for a deer hair or bucktail swap if anyone wants to host. I got some really nice ELK hair in and can't wait to play around with it. I also have some nice colorful bucktail that I would like to mess around with. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VFB Mail" group.
