I just am not comfortable fishing a strike indicator (Bobber) Tony From: Neville Gosling To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, April 28, 2012 7:36 PM Subject: [VFB] Mark Martin Midge Hi Chuck: I'm sure it would work. Chironomid fishing is quite an art and can be extremely frustrating. There are many times when I have caught nothing and other times when the fish obliged. I don't claim to be very good at it. I am going to a lake that I have never fished or even seen before, but it has a reputation for good chironomid fishing in the early part of the season. The water is very clear and the drop-off from the shoals can be steep and very deep. A 50 foot anchor line is considered to be too short. Normally, the fish are in the shallower water after ice out however we are talking using a floating line and 20 - 25 foot leaders. Some people use self releasing strike indicators, but this does not appeal to me. When the fish are deep, some people just use a sinking line and cast out a measured amount so that the chironomid fly is a foot to 18 inches off the bottom and just leave it there, moving it occasionally. This can be in 40 feet of water. Apparently, takes can be so violent that rods have been pulled overboard. For me, the biggest problem is finding the fish and the second biggest problem is finding the fly they will take. This is why I am going down in size. George Vincent BTW, I still have the key fob on my key chain from the 2002 VFB Retiree Swap. _ From: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com [mailto:vfb-mail@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Jimmy D. Moore Sent: Friday, March 23, 2012 1:38 PM To: Virtual Fly Box Subject: [VFB] Jimmy D & Sowbug There's been some discussion among my fly tying friends as to why I missed Sowbug this year. There are several reasons: I just turned 75 and Jody won't let me make long trips alone. Allan offered to fly down and ride up with me, but I wouldn't hear of that, although it places him at the top of my Best Friend list. :-) Secondly, My feet and ankles have deterioriated to the point that when I go to Walmart or the grocery, I grab one of those instore electric scooters. I can walk, but lots of pain afterwards. Thirdly, my lower left back gives me hell. I go to the Chiropractor once a week. He straightens me out and I'm good for the week, but always do something Dumb to throw it out again. Like unloading hay for Calico or putting Christmas boxes up high on storage shelves. Doesn't hurt to play golf, but if I swing too hard, I fall on my butt. :-[ Lastly, I have a tremor problem with my hands. My doc says it's not Parkinsons, thank the Lord. He called it Essential Tremor. He said an essential tremor, is one that comes on gradually, with no known cause. Told me that some types of essential hand tremors are hereditary. My Mom had them as did her father. Never seemed to really bother them. Good news is that they do not indicate a serious condition, but they sure can be frustrating, especially when tying flies. In general, they don't appear when my hand is at rest and are more obvious if my hand is held in a position that is uncomfortable, or if I get frustrated. Kind of wringing of the hands, but I've always done that. Funny thing about it is that when the tremor comes, I can "think" stop and it will stop. Doc was amazed at this and said he'd never seen it before. I can also keep the tremor from coming on just by thinking it away, like when I'm tying flies. But still hard to concentrate on two things at once. ;-) Bueno Rises. JIMMY D ><º> * JIMMY D. RE: [VFB] Vises
Tony, if you have the chance to get the Orvis Baetis vise, go for it, they are rare as hens teeth. I bought mine at an Orvis surplus sale and it had a broken jaw so I got it for a great price. It was quite expensive when new from Orvis as most of their merchandise is. I had an extra set of Thompson jaws both regular and midge that a machinist friend shorten for me and they work like a charm. Lucky that I had the broken Orvis jaw to use as a pattern. Unfortunately, he has since passed away. As you can probably tell, I am a big fan of Thompson vises and was very disappointed when they went out of business, although I think that there is a group of old employees that are trying to resurrect the production of some of the models. The vise that I recommend to new tyers is the HMH either Standard or Spartan models. They are made in Maine and the craftsmanship is superb and the service is super. There are bucketmouths there in the 6-7 pound range, and the fly fishers are intent to remove as many as possible (losing cause). For the last year and a half, I've developed a style and technique of tying using kids' modeling "clay" -- Crayola brand's Model Magic -- as a basis for new fly patterns. These have included an October Caddis pupa, a Field Cricket, and a Dragonfly Nymph. Attached are the first three Green Frogs, in the order that they were created. Materials are: white moldable foam, polypropylene yarn, rubber legs, and various flash materials. Coloring is acrylic paint and art marker. The eyes are created with fabric paint. All of this is mounted on a large stinger hook. The space behind the eye of the hook is where a new type of weed guard will be tied in. There are a good number of ideas going into this fly. The frog's legs are springy and hold their shape, and you can make the shapes surprisingly fast. The legs are shaped with a simple jig I've invented. The body length, not including the legs, is 2 inches. The fly is lightweight, a tenth of an ounce. I've developed a technique that solidly anchors the hook in the hardened foam. That's been battled tested. I make about five frogs at a time, mass producing all the parts. Assembly is very quick. The bodies are all quite similar, as they are all made at the same time, using the same tools. The basic shape is still "in progress". The variety of legs possible is a heap of fun. Coloring can take as long as you want. These are early prototypes, so I didn't spend a whole lot of time coloring them, maybe three minutes each. Green Frog is the name of a common pond frog. These are hand-held digital photos. I will be redoing the shots later with studio equipment. Also, the fly is still evolving, and who knows what it will be like or look like in a month or two. Hope you enjoy seeing some new stuff. I've sure enjoyed the puttering around... Wes Wada Bend, Oregon -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VFB Mail" group. Jimmy, I know we have had this discussion on this list before. I do it the same as you, that is cast with my right arm and switch to my left when I catch a fish to reel it in. This is the way that I was taught and the way that fly rods and reels were set up to be used by right-handed people at least back in the 50s when I learned to fly fish. BTW this is also the way that Lefty Kreh says that it should be done, because you are using your dominant hand to do the work. I don't know when they started teaching right-handed people to cast with the right and reel with the left, but as far as I am concerned they are wrong. I've had this trouble with my bait casting reel but it doesn't seem to affect how quick I strike at a bass. I've sat at my tying bench with a reel attached to a reel seat held the handle in my right hand and reeled left-handed until I'm blue in the face. After about 5 minutes, reeling left-handed seems natural, BUT . . . . when I get on the stream and a fish takes, I fall back into the switching rod from right to left hand and then reeling with my right hand. I'll try doubly hard to reel left-handed on the next fish, but even if I don't make the switch, my reeling is an uncoordinated jerky motion. Maybe I've just got a mental block. I tied this fly about 12 years ago and did well on it, but as I started using other flies, I kind of let this one sit in my fly box. I started using it again last year and have been doing real well on it. I have caught Trout, Bluegills and Smallnouth bass with it. I tie them with and without weight and fish it without an indicator. I just don't use indicators. Tying the P&B. this is a real simple fly to tie with basically two materials plus the hook and thread. It was originally tied with Ginger Tinsel Chenille , now using the Copper Tinsel Chenille I use for the Chili Pepper. Hook:Scud Hook: 10-14 Weight: As Desired or none Thread:: 8/0 Fire Orange Tail: Two or Three Strands of Peacock Herl Body: Copper Tinsel Chenille, Ginger can also be used Shell Back: Two or Three strands of Peacock Herl Twisted Head: Fire Orange thread Antenna: Two strands of Peacock Herl. If using weight, wrap the hook with lead wire as desired. Secure the wire with the Fire Orange thread. Bring the thread fwd and tie in the strands of Peacock Herl over the hook shank. Tie in behind the hook eye leaving enough space for final tying off and the head. Leave the Herl ends beyond the hook bend for the tail. Fold the Herl back and over wrap to the hook bend, bring the thread back to the hook eye. Tie in the body Chenille the full length of the body wrapping down the bend a bit to give the body a bit of a curve. You will be tying over the top of the folded Herl. Bring the thread fwd to the tie off point. Wrap the body and tie off at the hook eye. Raise the tag ends of the Herl and twist them together to form a rope. Pull the "rope" over the top of the body and tie off behind the hook eye, do not cut herl yet.. This forms the Shell Back. Tie off and form a definite Fire Orange Collor and head. Whip Finish. Clip off the Herl at the bend to form a short tail and at the hook eye to form short Antennas. Not really necessary but I clip off one of the three antenna strands so there are only two. I fish this fly dead drift with a twitch till the swing. After the swing, I let it come to the surface and twitch it a bit. Fishing one without weight, it will just drift just below the surface. I have had a lot of violent strikes on this fly. Joyce, for the most part I can echo your comments, however, we did not have a tractor and the property size was much smaller. All the uncles and cousins dug the gardens by hand using garden forks and shovels, but the vegetables were just as tasty, The fruit trees provided jams and jellies canned by all the aunts. The chickens provided eggs and many enjoyable dinners. The outhouse was sometimes to far to go. but we made the trek. The wood stove in the outside kitchen backed many fine apple pies. The grape arbor provided wine. The grass was cut by hand pushed reel mowers and coal was carried to the furnace in the kitchen. Oh the joys of my youth, I remember them well. The fishing was only a bicycle ride away with no thought of predators interrupting our ride. The first steak I had was at a banquet in college and when they put the prime rib in front of me, I felt guilty because it was enough for a whole family! As one who grew up with no electricity, no running water..that is,unless we ran up the hill with the bucket to the house, dirt road with the last two miles non-graveled, I had a wonderful childhood. Mine was a rural farm where, we had a 2 acre garden, 5 acre potato patch, same for sweet corn, raised our own melons and had chickens, eggs, fresh pork and beef. I grew up eating better than much of the rest of the world. We worked hard, had a house with worn out linoleum floors but knew how to work, raise our own food and had much love in our family. We had a lake 20 rods from the house and plenty of fresh fish..mother loved to fish and taught the kids. So, yes, they may be poor, we were, but there was no violence, no worry about gang shootings, never a worry about where our next meal was coming from. We sold eggs and cream which meant we also knew how to care for dairy as well as beef cattle. We used horses as well as a tractor, so we knew equine ways as well as how to gap spark plugs. In short, this was an idyllic place for me, and I'd not trade my "third world" upbringing for anything. We had the knowledge that though we were poor, we were loved and self sufficient. [VFB] Re: Wading experience...
Nick, this is the reason that I use one of those address labels received in the mail overlaid with scotch tape on each fly box. Hopefully, if found by another fisherman it may be returned to me. Without a label it is merely a gift for the finder. Sometimes the box - Wheatley - is worth more than the flies. Glad you survived the dunking and didn't break the rod. When I take a tumble, I am always more concerned for the rod than my body. If you are a wading fly fisherman, it is not a matter of "if" you are going to take a fall, but "when." Sooner or later we all suffer the indignity, I just hate the embarrassment! I have just come home from a nice week of grayling fishing in the northern Swedish river Hårkan... with a wading experience richer. The only "wader dip" I had before this was in White River 2006. That one must have been in the America's Funniest Home Videos league. Tony can testify on that. Water that's hardly moving... barely one foot deep... with a gravel bottom flat as a pancake... stumble on virtually nothing and landing on my chest. This time the water was waist deep though and pushing quite hard. The bottom was rocky and far from wading friendly (and I had been close to fall several times during the week). It wasn't a "without wading stick" place (at least not to me, who is a careful dude). I heard the sound of a fish rising to my left and when I quickly turned my head to see where it was I felt a sligtht sign of losing balance. So I took a little step backwards... maybe 5-6"... slipped and fell backwards... and suddenly I was under the water. After fighting a couple of seconds I managed to turn around so I had my toes facing the stones and when I got a grip between the stones the stream towards my chest "helped" me to get up again. I turned to get up from the water and in the very next step I slipped again and fell face down. This time it didn't come as the same shock kind of thing as the first fall and I was able to actually THINK about how to get up, so I got back up standing without major problem. I looked down and was going to reach for my wading stick and saw that the left pocket in my chest pack was empty... just as empty as the left big vest pocket. Downstream I saw three boxes getting smaller... a big compartment/slit foam box with dry flies, a slit foam box (swing leaf) of the same size with nymphs and another slit foam box with soft hackle flies. I had packed my boxes with flies before this trip, so there were more than a couple of flies disappearing there... and instincts took over. I started to run downstream (as fast as you can, jumping on rocks with water up to your waist). The water got deeper though and when it reached just below my chest I stumbled and fell again. I had just reached the boxes, but at the same time I also reached a hole where it suddenly got much deeper. Trying to stand up again wasn't on the menu anymore and I started to swim. Swimming with the rod in one hand and 'catching' all three boxes was impossible. I knew that much. So I started to hit them one by one to get them upstream and closer to land. Then I swam a bit towards land myself until they reached me and it was time for the next "hit/swim" move again. After a couple of times repeating this I was at a depth where I could stand up again and just collecting the boxes coming towards me... and finally focus on leaving the water. The night before this I had landed my (by far) largest grayling after a long fight on a #3 rod and in fast moving water,,, but I still think this was the took the prize as the "adventure of the trip". How I actually managed to salvage all three boxes and the rod (and myself) is beyond me. I must have had Him on my side. But you can't have anything. Back in the wind shelter we sat by the fire and I had changed into some reserve clothing and my wading jacket that I didn't wore when I fell. My soaking wet fleece sweater was hanging on a nail on the wall... right above my opened backpack. The water was dripping RIGHT down in the pocket where I kept the cellphone... and that was the end of his adventure. :oP So, what have I learned from this trip? *Be careful where you put your feet in the water. (I already knew that, so it was more of a reminder.) But keep your pockets closed. Careful or not... eventually you will still fall. Having given the extra second to close the pocket after putting the box back down can turn out to be worth both the time and the effort. *When you have fallen, gotten up and are sitting there happy over still being alive and not having lost anything... it doesn't have to be over. I for one stopped using a strike indicator years ago. However, I often use a dry fly with a dropper to accomplish much the same thing. I have also tied a monofilament loop in front of the hook eye when first starting to tie a dry fly and this allows the dry fly to be adjusted up and down the leader much the same as a strike indicator. Of course this is an approximation depending upon where you place your finger under the cork as the fulcrum. I generally place the fulcrum (my finger) closer to the front of the cork. [VFB] Re: Left hand reel
Ian, I do not think of this as a left hand reel. I am right handed and cast with my right arm/hand. I then pass the rod to my left arm and reel with my right hand. This is/was the traditional way of learning to fly fish and how I learned over 50 years ago. Thus, you are right handed you are always using your dominant hand. Today's fly fisher has some how been mistakenly (in my opinion) learned to cast with their right hand and reel with their left. In which case reels need to be altered for right hand reeling. I still believe that most if not all manufactures still sell their reels oriented to the old way. Famed fly caster Lefty Kreh still advocates using your dominant hand as I was taught. OK, so you have finally sparked my interest. I am going to plan to attend Sowbug next year. However, I do have some questions: How close is the event to an airport, I will be traveling from Maryland? Where do most people stay? How does one sign up to tie or do you have to be invited? How close is the fishing to the event? I wondered what happened to Jeff Frye, but saw amidst the backlog of e-mail that he had a strained back and was only at the get-together on Friday - the day I was out playing. I'm sorry I didn't get to see him. Several others who I spend time with weren't there and were missed - Jimmy Moore, RIck Zeiger, Bruce and Brandon Whittle, and Dennis Conrad come immediately to mind this morning. I did get to see several others from one or more of the groups. Kevin Slater and his handsome son chatted with me for a while. As I was wandering around, Kevin's son was sitting there tying with Dad and I regret that I didn't have my camera with me at the time. Joe Fusco.John Maples.I won't try to name all the others - I would omit some accidently. When they update the website you can check out who all was there. And many tyers who are not on the list who have become friends over the years. Many great tyers were there - some of them very well-known (Jay Fullum, Stack Scoville, Jeff Hines, Kyle Hand), but some of them not, but still great and innovative tyers. And yes, I know the word should be spelled 'tiers', but to me tiers means 'layers' and sounds like "tears", and although we were using chicken feathers, I didn't see any setting hens there. So I spell it "tyers" to dispell misinterpretation. I learned many new flies and techniques. The cameraderie amongst tyers was great. The audiences were attentive. I was able to teach three young men (10 - 14 years old) how to do the whip finish by hand. Two adults watched and then had me show them. I gained five pounds, so that speaks to the cooking. The weather was the best it ever has been. The generators were shut down for the entire time so the White & Norfork were the most fishable it ever was. We got to visit Crooked Creek, so that was a first. I caught a trout on my very first cast with my new Dave Lewis Rod. One of our group caught his first (and second and third) trout on a fly rod. But the biggest thrill of all was to actually go fishing with Tony Spezio. And getting a hug from his wife Dot. I probably shouldn't mention the peach jelly and mahaw jelly I got to bring home. [VFB] Re: Active Nymphing was QUOTE FOR THE DAY
Absolutely Tom, I couldn't agree more with your observations. When I started nymphing without a strike indicator, my catch rate increased. I have used the same technique and have also caught fish at all stages of the presentation. The fly is only part of the technique, the rest is presentation, presentation, presentation. Keeping the fly in the water is very important, even fishing out a bad cast can produce a catch. I can usually spot a novice by watching the number of false casts. The fly in the water is what catches the fish, the fly in the air doesn't. George Vincent _ From: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com [mailto:vfb-m...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Tom Davenport Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2009 18:34 To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Subject: [VFB] Re: Active Nymphing was QUOTE FOR THE DAY I learned to fly fish about 15 years ago when a friend helped me get rigged up and taught me how to cast and fish. He was a nymph fisherman (anyone who fishes the Weber River where I fish most often is) and he taught me to dead drift the fly behind a strike indicator. Later I talked to another friend who had been a fly tyer and fly fisher for years, and asked him if he used a strike indicator and the dead drift. He said no, he always used a shorter line and followed it as it drifted through the deep holes. So I tried his technique and started catching more fish. Several years later I realized what I was doing is called "High Sticking" and it is still my preferred method to dig a bunch of fish out of a deep hole. It always includes a lift at the end, and often I strip it back, and have caught fish both ways. Also with a nymph and a swing, especially when there are caddis hatching. While the basic idea of the "dead drift" is sound, but I don't think it is as important as some people think. Sometimes adding a little motion to the fly is exactly what the fish need to strike. If I am fishing a long, deep run, I will often combine them all... Maybe cast into a back eddy, let the fly sink then strip it into the main current, let it dead drift until it comes close to me, then lift the line and high stick through the water next to me, with a swing on the end, followed by stripping the line back. I have caught fish at all stages of the presentation of the fly. I think we spend too much time wondering what a fly "represents" . Most often, it is just something that looks like food to the fish, and movement can be a trigger. Perhaps the most important thing is just keeping the fly in the water, and close to the bottom. Tom P.S. By the way, I am officially "back". My strength, energy, appetite, are all normal. I am also making progress with the other two side effects of the surgery. Life is good. The only downside is that my intention to attend Sowbug this year has been derailed by $3000.00 in medical expenses (since I was in the hospital in December and January, it get to pay for two years worth of deductibles). I was really looking forward to seeing Tony again, but my son is a trucker, and if he has a run this summer that comes within 200 miles of Flippin, I'll be there to visit (I'll call first). On Feb 14, 2009, at 6:21 AM, Anthony Spezio wrote: This called the "Miracle Inch". I use it a lot and get some violent strikes. Your books ref to the stripping the nymph on the lift is how he described the Czech and Polish method of what we call the induced take as originated here by Mr Skues. There is a new (?) method used by these guys that uses long leaders up to 18 or 20 feet long ! At the end of the drift they lift the nymph at a rediculous (to me anyway) speed but it works really well. I have used the same method but with sensible leaders of 10 to 12 feet long. And then Lee Wulff added the calf-tail wings for visibility, float, and durability (added to many patterns). Most else is just variations, as is with the RC and the RW- variations of the coachman. A grey tippet wing is probably referring to the tip of a gray or grizzly hackle, and for that you'd just tie a set of adams tippet wings on a royal coachman body and finish with coachman brown hackles. I prefer Winger wings in the adams grizzly colors or white, for both profile on the water and durability. But if you are mimicking a clear-wing mayfly, then a fine hackle tip is the way to go, just suggesting the wing, as does the adams dry fly, rather that presenting it in full profile. Nick, the one that I have, I bought at a fly swap many years ago. However, you can make one yourself using a tongue blade and a spring type clothespin glued to it.
