Re: [VFB] Tampa

2011-01-09 Thread LESTER BELL
Ft Desoto has many spots to wade fish. This is a good time of the year for
reds and trout. You might also get a shot at a sheepshead. I generally get
three or four on flys each winter. Anything that looks like a small
crab/shrimp( browns, olives and some orange). If you wade the beach there
are pompano and whiting and trout. The pomps like small Clousers in
brownish combo's. There are also wading area's on the approach to the
Skyway Bridge. If you are so inclined, call me when you get in. I'll give
you my number on my email address off site.

Speaking of salt water...

I'm going to be in Tampa in a camper next week (flash trip), and I was
wondering what fishing hotspots exist for wade-fishing during this time of
the year.

I've looked up some spots, and Ft. DeSoto Park looks like a nice camping
area with lots of wadeable surf.

Is this the best bet, or does anyone know anything better?

Hi DonO;

I was half kidding about color, especially pink but kinda wondered if
brown and green might just cancel out in the same color water. I suspect it
has something to do with floatant and imagine if you let the tippet sink in the
film it is less visible.

Hint... It's got nuthin do do with leader color...
and clue: flourocarbon is a bust for dry-fly leaders because they
match the light refractory index of water.

Like I said, this ain't rocket science.

Maxima chameleon brown for brown water maxima ultragreen for green
water and pink for clear water cuz trout can't see pink. I happen to be the

  Tony and others:

You might want to try one of these fly threaders. It holds the eye of
the fly in line with the groove magnetically. After placing the fly, one simply
pushes the tippet along the groove (from right hand side), through the eye of
the hook and as you can see the end of the tippet comes out on the left. They
green thread in the photo is simply a lanyard that the person is wearing around
their neck so that the threader is always available. They retail online for
about $10.00. The eye of the fly must be clear of any threads or hackles.

  JimmyD,
  I like your QFTD.

'Casting well' can be thought of like using a pool cue to shoot pool. Cues
come in various weights and qualities, but your ability to shoot well and run
the table does not lie on the quality of the que. Of course, a better cue
makes for a more enjoyable shooting experience, but few beginners would notice
or could make use of the fine nuances of a high-end expensive cue. A better
cue can carry out the extreme english needed for some shots, but the knowledge
has to be there to start. A great shooter can run the table with a broom
stick, but prefers to shoot with a $1000 cue.

Fly-casting and fly-fishing is like that. With a little tutoring and some
basic skills and rules, anyone can play the game with that 'bar-rod'. But as
one's skills and fishing knowledge grow, better equipment is helpful and more
enjoyable in 'running the river'. Problem is, unlike pool balls, fish have
brains and programming and move around and turn on and off and swim away and...

  One more note:
Just as a pool shooter has a breaking cue, a jumping cue, and a shooting cue
with spare tips, so a well-equipped flyfisher would be advisded. Using your
fine $700 5wt. to cast heavy weighted nymphs or split shot, risking getting the
rod dinged up by them (weak spot = break spot), is like doing that
vertical-jamb-masse-shot with your best shooting cue. Get a long 6 or 7 wt.
'cheap' rod with a fast action and proper line to lift and cast that weighted
wet bugger and haul up that lunker. And then swap to that fine 5wt for the
evening rise of size 22PMDs.

  My 2 cents...

Right on. That's a Canon PowerShot... which we bought after asking Hans W
for advice. We were so happy with that, so after she'd killed it, we bought
another one. LOL

There was a remote capture software coming with that one. A little more
basic than the PSRemote software, but it worked fine. I didn't discover that
it was there until I had PSRemote installed though. PSRemote is a Breeze
Systems product. It's designed for PowerShot models. They also have DSLR
Remote for Canon DSLR cameras and NKRemote for Nikon DSLR cameras.

Here's their home page: http://www.breezesys.com/index.htm

As far as I see Nick is using a canon camera. I used one years ago. Canon is
delivering some software with the camera which allows a remote control of
the device. That means you can control the camera, change setup. At least
with my camera, with the software you had more options as with the camera
itself. But it usually needs Windows Rene, on Linux

When you hook the camera to the computer, it sees the camera as a USB

software will allow you to use the computer hard drive as the storage
device rather than the memory card in the camera. I use my video
camera direct to the laptop to do that, which I can also use for still
 shots.

Is there another way. or is this another Oly-glitch?

I thought all cameras worked parallel on screen.

Works perfect... a Mongopod. When photographing flies, I also
use a remote capture software... everything's done from the
computer as soon as the fly is in the vise. The only things I do
with the actual camera is switching it on and off. Very
comfortable. With an instant high resolution preview on the
monitor, I will see at once if it's good or not. When the lights
are fixed, settings OK... I click for a hard picture, that goes
straight into the folder on the computer, without taking any
children pictures space on the memory card. LOL

Very handy... especially when doing step-by-steps. With the mouse
beside the vise I take a picture when I want and can see directly
if it's OK to move on or to take a new one.

I have been trying to locate some small stainless steel hooks for saltwater
flies. It seems that the smallest available is size 8 if you can locate some I
could use some size 10 if I could find them. I need them to tie a small
euphasid (krill) pattern for pink salmon in the saltwater. If push come to
shove, I will have to tie on regular hooks but they will rust out in no time.
If any member knows of a source, please let me know. Thanks

  Hi Gang

I am thinking of going to Fort Myers for a fishing trip in June but was
not sure what the weather is like that time of year.

dont want to go all the way from England if it is going to be wet all day
( I can stay here for that )

Also what is the fishing like at that time ?

  Any help appreciated.

By June, we are usually in the hi 80's -low 90's F*And we will have
the usual afternoon thunder boomers. The cold fronts

  are long gone.

The fishing is GREAT. One of the best times of the year. If you catch a
hill tide in June, it can be magic. The Tarpon and Snook will be on the

beaches. One of the 2-3 best months of the year.

If you do make, let me know what other advice you might want.

The June weather is warm with a reasonable chance of afternoon showers.
Fishing is generally good. Ft Myers is close to many saltwater fishing
locations; Boca Grande, Charlotte Harbor, Pine Island Sound, Englewood and the
Gasparilla Islands. Tarpon, Snook, Trout etc.

My first was the ugliest thing ever. I didn't have a pattern to
follow, just tied what I thought a fly should look like. I had not
even started fly fishing, so I was really just guessing. It turned out
to be some sort of Wolly Worm Mutant, and I keep it in a film canister
and when I have a hard time tieing flies, I take a look to see how far
 I have come. :)

Here is an interesting question. What was your first fly that you tied?
 Do
you still have it? Do you still tie that same pattern and use it for
 fishing.

My first fly (I'll have to post a picture of it) was a Mickey Finn
 Streamer
w/ Peacock tied over the top. I still have it displayed in a case in our
front room. People once and awhile will ask about it. It was the first
 fly
that a beginner fly tying kit instructed me to tie.
