Hi Tony, nice to hear from you.  I figured you were busy with health issues and
silent because you didn’t need another swap to stress you out.  So sorry about
that.  Thanks for the info and for being around for us. Sure hope you’ve gotten
ahead of this new problem in time. Will keep you in my prayers. I can maybe
send you a group of extra PSQN flies if that would work for you.  I’ll bet the

Hi Guys,I can't remember ever using this forum but I'm testing it out to see if
this post comes through. I took a very long break from tying publicly, I
stepped back from the Whting team to work on my degree. A few of you were so
encouraging and supportive of me while I worked my way through school. THANK
YOU!!!  I still tie for my own fishing and fun but not as much as I would like
to. I'm in a different pond now than I was used to so I'm adjusting to that
also. I miss the salt water. I spend more time tying Hans CDC Elk hair caddis
flies and timy trout flies... WOW what a change for me.  I finally have a new
desk to set up and hopefully make a more comfortable place to tie for my self
than out of boxes. I wanted to reach out and see how Don O was doing. He's been
on my mind.  I've kept in touch with a few of you but I have stepped very far
back from public tying while I put myself through school and joined the working
world. Now I finally have some time for myself again and I have been thinking
about so many of my friends that I haven't been able to keep in touch with as
much as I would like to .For those of you who knew me you will remember me as
Deb Duran. I hope all of you are well. Tony, I still love my froggies!!! I have
read some updates on you and I hope all is going well for you this holiday.I've
never lost touch with Peggy and I look forward to seeing you and Jerry this
spring again. Now with any luck this will post. Happy Holidays to you all.Best,

We have a Winnebago so stay in Titusville FL until it's time to go over to
Sowbug, works pretty good so far. When we get to old we'll stay home.

Anyone up for a November or Dec. fly
swap? (after the season is over)

I have an idea for 10
tiers.  Tie an easy fly design that I give- a rope-dub bugger
pattern, and each swapper ties one color of it 10
times. (I’ll post a collage of a wide range of styles)

Each color can be
a different size and embellished with flash, eyes, cones- whatever, but the
bugger basic style must be maintained.  Since there are combination of
colors, the selection would be infinite.  Natural furs count as
colors.

This would allow big bass buggers, trout buggers, panfish buggers, even
pike and saltwater buggers. A chili-pepper would even pass.  But each color
or combo must be by one tier, so there’s no repeats.

I will post a picture palette of styles and colors to give some food for
thought, and then we tie one on. Then we get to tying actual
flies.  (TUI flies are still acceptable)

If this one runs over the
number, that’s fine, since variations are endless and buggers work for
everything.  I have salt-water rope-dub jack-buggers that are just killer
in Florida bays. (Ask Jerry Goldsmith)  Just a rope-dub (highly segmented,
tapered) bugger tied with bite tippet with flash green and blue materials.

I thought a new twist would be to post your pilot-pattern
on VFB for a comment session to get thoughts.  Then if a VFBer wants to
join or just post their comment or even their version (photo), that would make
for a real fun swap with lots of participation that wouldn’t be time-consuming
at all.

Any takers?

As busy as I have been at work with the 18hr shifts (I'm in biopharmaceuticals/
health sector), during the times I'm willing to fish (I don't fish when dark,
personal preference and there's some safety-related reasons involved as well -
sleep deprived and wading in the dark makes for bad situations), I have always
found time to tie flies during my off-work time, albeit sometimes only one or a
few flies at a time.
Having started out in this great sport by tying at the age of 14, and not
picking up a fly rod until my college years, I did things a little backwards
from the traditional progression of things, and so I must confess that I get as
much, if not more, pleasure out of the act of tying for the pure fact of tying
for tying's sake, compared to the fishing act.  Don't get me wrong, I covet my
days on the water, and love catch and releasing a good trout just like the next
guy.  But for me, tying is my daily reprieve from the stresses of life, that
can be done at any time of the day.
There's three things I always make time for in life: firstly, spending time in
the Word, with my God, secondly spending time with my wife and kids, and
thirdly, tying at least one fly a day, in that order.  I think of tying flies
as a sort of mental therapy, without which I would be a mess; it calms me
unlike any other activity could, gives me clarity and focus in my world, and
the way I go through materials, it costs about the same as a therapist would :)
Perhaps each of you share the same sentiment on tying, perhaps not and fishing
itself is where it is at for you, but I am just glad that we can share our love
of this fine sport together.

the fish to laugh so hard that I can scoop then up while they're distracted
with their laughter.  ...Or something like that...

All kidding aside, well done, everyone.  I can't wait to copy these!
Oh, and I must confess, I took some liberties with materials on my fly,
compared to the original pattern, or at least the pattern as it exists in its
current state as considered to be "original", but I tried my best to keep the
general idea, and impression given by the materials the same (i.e. speckled CDL
tail in place of "darkly speckled champagne spade hackle tail", and a single
strand of embroidery thread wrapped 6 times used in place of "a tag of six
wraps tightly corded, sparse and defuzzed, thread made of pig wool, of color
muted brown with olive").  Send to me off-list if you want the so-called /
considered original recipe, and let me know where you acquire such materials if
you have a source for them.
The recipe is one handed down through the generations on my maternal side,
which is in fact Clan Campbell of Cawdor (Scotland), and I do not know how
"authentic" the recipe I have is, that is, how true to the original it is (it
has had something like 13 generations of 'whisper down the lane', and I don't
doubt that it started as a wet fly and ended up as the dry fly it is today much
later down the line), but it is still a neat little pattern to tie up.  And it
catches fish!
Thanks for putting up with my circumlocution about this family fly, and let me
know off-list if you want more info about it..Tight lines,-Pete

2016-06-18 Thread ladyflytyer

Good retirement plan!
I am applying for a grant for next year to work with a apprentice again. The
amount the state pays for the 75 hours of instruction is well worth it. Am
changing my focus away from the fly fusing shows, they want all tiers to pay
for space and the returns just aren't there for the exhibitors.  There are
lot's of other venues for someone to semi fund their small business so it will
cover expenses for a few years then I'll stick to just doing workshops, they
are fun and get us around the country.
Then we get to stay home and age out going to a couple of events a year, like

Fly tying can be a couple of nights a month to stock up
on depleted favorite patterns, or a full-blown multi-faceted
hobby, hobby-business, part-time business, or retirement
business.

If you include the satellite activities besides fishing,
which include getting together with other tiers, attending
fly shows (or tying at them), researching, publishing books
or videos, mentoring, and of course vfb-ing, there's a lot
to keep it diverse and interesting. When it gets boring,
just add a new venue to the tying and challenge yourself to
kick it up a notch.  Or plan a new trip for different fish,
and tie the flies needed for that.  It should never ever get
boring, especially if you include a sense of humor or art to
the process.

On materials, my challenge after this last move and
re-organization is just finding what I need amongst the
myriad of materials I've collected. But I have a plan for
next year for retardment. My 'retirement' will really just
mean swapping focus from the oil & gas business to
Fantasy Flies and videos. I intend to get a shop and turn it
into a fly-base of operations.

Ahh, the video.  Rope-dub DVD#2.  Thinking of
an alternate plan- put it out for comments.

Instead of a long DVD which is taking forever to film and
produce (if I can get any time), how about a
You-tube channel with themed short videos uploaded
regularly- not only on rope-dubbing (will go on forever),
but on mice (deerhair), flex-o, McFlyfoam, #32's,
salt-flies, streamers, etc.?

Big difference is it would be free to all,
which is how I handled it in the first place with Byard,
putting the RD videos on his site for anyone to see (pretty
crude at the time).  My pay would be with visits &
subscribers- from Y-T. Then also I’d still be selling the
giant Fantasy Flies, framed streamers, mice, etc. Hopefully
make for a busy yet pleasant retirement.

This way I could somewhat follow the comments in
adjusting what I tie or show next and just let it evolve. Of
course, there will be my sense of humor worked in throughout
all of the videos to keep it from being all ‘dry’.

And since I’m slowing way down in attending fly shows
(travelling less and less), I’ll make a ‘Baits Hotel’ video
just for giggles and grins (and to survive me).

Comments? (Especially from those who have DVD #1.)

tried Cotter, the dam area, springs areas, difficult to wade and short on bites.
The good news is Blue ribbon fly shop has reopened, and Cotter has a new shop
Natural State and a MUST see is Duane Hada's new gallery.
It's raining now, with thunder. This afternoon we'll give Tony a call

What I do is take a gallon freezer bag and put the
materials I need for just that one fly I plan on tying. When I get ready to tye
that fly, I just pull out that bag I have marked with a black marker pen and I
have my materials all there for that fly. Keeps me from digging for material to
tye that fly.Tony

No fishing here.  Too much flooding.  Too many storms.  We've been
getting 2-4" about every day for over a week. There's enough wind with
these things that lots of trees and/or big limbs are down. Of course
this causes massive power outages, etc.  Our power was out 8 hours today
from a storm that went through at noon.  Local utilities repairmen are
swamped.

And now another storm just passed through. It was just announced on the
news that the southern part of our county already has over 5,000 folks
without power from the current storm, which hasn't passed on out of that
area yet.  Thankfully we're on the Northern edge of the county.
