Re: [VFB] Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy?
Pete I've heard of it. Even tied a few. Learned it from an older guy in the club I belong about 25 years ago. I was looking for a pattern to match a particular hatch. I don't think I've tied since then. [VFB] Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy?
Anyone ever hear of a pattern called a "Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy"? Passed by my local pond and saw another fly fisher there (rare) just reeling them in (very rare), hand over foot, thankfully catch and releasing or I'd need to find myself a new local pond to fish - he was catching that many - but when I stopped by to ask what he was using, he gave a sly grin and said an older pattern called the "Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy". I shouldn't be as surprised as I am, but seeing as it was a fellow who looked fresh out of puberty, pimples and all, I was a bit surprised he was using an older pattern. He never did let me get a look at the fly, so I'm on a "quest" of sorts, to find a pattern recipe and example photo to get an idea of what the end product should look like and how to tie it. Thanks, gang, any help is appreciated! -Pete -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VFB Mail" group. Re: [VFB] Sowbug Travel Options -- like to get some advice and hints
Good to hear from you, Memphis i about 5 hours from Flippin a bit shorter to Mtn. Home. WE are about 25 minuets from Mtn Home now that we have a four lane highway. It was just two lane when you were here. Fishing should me good. I am not sure yet is I will be able to take you on the river but I can find a friend that should be able to do it. Most of my fishing friends have passed on. I have not been on the river for two years. I am having some pretty bad health issues with spells. I don't know when they will hit me and at times I get totally unresponsive. It has really gotten bad this year. I will be having a brain study next week. I have to go to Branson to a specialist up there. I will have probes put on my head that will record my brain waves 24 hours for the five days. I hope I will be able to tie at the Sowbug.. I was asked to make a presentation bamboo rod to auction off but so far I have not been able to work in the shop to get one made. Looking fwd to seeing you again and we want you and your wife to spend a bit of time with us. I think I told you what is up at Branson, I think you will find a lot to do there if you decide to go up there. We used to get a season pass for Silver Dollar City but since we don't travel anymore we don't do it any more. I just go to see some of my doctors up there. It is about a two hour drive. When you respond to this invitation, make sure you let me know if you are attending this party and how many so I can purchase enough food and drink. There will be another party called the Sowbug Shindig on Friday, 3/24 at 530pm. At this event, we will serve a meal and have a live auction. When you first arrive, let me know how many tickets you need for you and your spouse. This event is free for tiers and spouses. Here are the rules for the John Berry Fly Tying Contest: SOWBUG ROUNDUP FLY TYING CONTEST 2017 BY JOHN BERRY As many of you know, the most important fly fishing event of the year is the Sowbug Roundup. It is a three day celebration of fly tying that is scheduled for May 23, 24 and 25 in 2017 at the Baxter County Fairgrounds. Fly tyers from throughout the United States will be there and we usually draw a tyer or two from abroad. //I am on the Sowbug committee and I believe that the next Sowbug Roundup will be the best one ever. My job on the committee is chairman of the Fly Tying Contest. This has become an integral part of the show and I really enjoy doing it. I invite each of you to enter the contest. You need to include the recipe for the fly and instructions on how to fish it. You may submit as many patterns for as many categories as you want. All flies submitted will become the property of the contest and will not be returned. Any fly that contains insect parts (legs wings, etc.) will be eliminated from competition. Commercially tied patterns will not be accepted. The decision of the judges is final. Committee members and judges are not eligible to participate in the contest. The winners will be announced on Friday March 25, 2017 at the Sowbug Roundup Shindig which will be held at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church beginning at 6:00 PM. This event has become the top fly fishing social event of the year. The idea behind the fly tying contest is to identify and acknowledge those talented tyers among us that nobody knows about. My only regret is that, as a committee member and judge, I cannot enter the contest. John Berry is a fly fishing guide in Cotter, Arkansas and has fished our local streams for over thirty years. J, I think there has been a new guy take over in mid-stream. Fred DuPré was good about getting back to us. I don't think the new guy is that organized. I haven't heard back and am going on the theory that 'no news is good news'. Did you get an invitation and turn it back in? If not, I'll see if I can get hold of someone down there. Re: AW: [VFB] Sowbug Travel Options -- like to get some advice and hints
It is both scenic and a tourist area with a lot of country shows. Lot of tourist attractions like the Titanic, WW2 museum a lot of different food restaurants and rides on the WW2 Ducks that take you out on the lake. There is also a showboat and dinner show. The boat is a paddle wheel boat like used on the Mississippi river. That is just a few things. March has not started the tourist season yet so prices are reasonable. Day before yesterday I had to go to a specialist in Branson and in the waiting room was a person that looked familiar. We talked a bit and he said that he was 80 years young and survived two plane crashes. It was Mikey Gilly. I shook his hand and as he reached for Dot's hand she said she wanted a hug. He gave her a big hug and my son took a photo. He then stayed a bit and talked to us. Great person. When he left I said, we have something in common. Two plane crashes and the same doctor. A very nice remembrance. Twenty some years ago I started snipping the "feathers" from my Springers when they died. And then tying a couple of streamers from them. Folks: As many of you know, we had to put our 15 yr old dog Chico to sleep about 10 days ago or so. Well, yesterday, we got the footprints thing in the mail shown in the attached here. And they had all 20 or so employees from that Vets office sign a "condolences card" along with this plaster cast of Chico's feet. Not many Vets would go to this trouble and we appreciate it a LOT, Chuck -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the "VFB Mail" group. I use rubber and silicon gloves (cleaning or surgical). They have different thicknesses, colours, and are cheap. The other benefit is the rolled bit at the opening. If you buy it there so you are left with a rolled silicon 'rope', it wraps around the hook to give an awesome segmented body such as in a grub. Want it thinner? Just pull tighter. Apologies, I didn't mean for it to come out poorly, I meant no disrespect. Only wanted to see if we were speaking of the same thing is all. I've used hopper legs from River Roads and have had great success with them, when tied as hopper legs. I think I'll give it a try for tying in foam, short, to make nymph legs from them. I'm always open to new ideas and I admit I never would have thought of that had you not mentioned it. These Lively Legz are meant for nymphs, I believe, not hoppers, with all due respect. Two people asked for a link, off-list, so I'll provide it here - hopefully that's ok? http://livelylegz.com/collections/lively-legz Again, no affiliation, I don't get a cut or anything, and my offer for free legs for the "cost" of either emailed pictures of flies tied with them, and/or emailed recipes of flies tied with them, is still open. If you wish to create your own, you can get leg cutters that work extremely well here. http://riverroadcreations.com/HopperLegs.htm J A complete set costs $39.95 and you can use whatever foam color, touched up with Permapen you wish. Or, as Pete says, you can buy them from Lively Legz pre-made. I agree with him, legs on my flies seem to add a bit more action in this form than simple knotted legs. Thanks for the update. [VFB] Lively legz
Anybody heard of these "Lively Legz" before? it is a synthetic product kind of like a silicone, similar to the legs that J:Son puts out as nymph legs, but (strictly in my opinion, and not to knock J:Son) I personally find them easier to work with, and for me where I'm located they're cheaper per fly than J:Son. Plus, being from Pennsylvania, USA, I have to support folks from my own state haha. Seriously though, no affiliation to them, save for being a ridiculously happy customer, I absolutely love these things, and I find the purple flake color to have increased my fish catching rates, when nymphing. Maybe it is just my added confidence in fishing these, I'll give you that, but it seems to have had a positive impact. If anyone wants to try one or two for tying, or if anyone wants a fly tied by me (I'm not a professional, but I'll do my best), just send an email off-list. I won't promise it'll be tomorrow that I get to tying them up for you, honestly, but it will be soon, and I think you'll like the results. Again, not meant as an ad for them, and I have no affiliation with them. Just want to let folks see how awesome these things are. They are a game changer for my nymphs, and I now tie my nymphs with these legs almost exclusively. [VFB] Had to put one of our dogs down today.
Folks: First off, I hope everybody has a Happy Thanksgiving and remembers to be thankful for the things we have whether it’s our health, a roof over our heads or whatever. That being said, we had to put our dog Chico (see attached photo) down today. He had herniated his bladder and needed a VERY dangerous, and VERY expensive ($2500 minimum and could be up to $5,000 after they got in there to see what they were really dealing with) that we just didn’t just have surgery to ATTEMPT to fix it. What made if more dangerous was that no vet around here had ever even seen this particular problem, and they sais that at 15+yrs old, it would be a 50/50 shot at him even waking up from surgery. So anyway, he had had it for a while now, but e could still urinate properly and wasn’t in any real pain as the hernia would pop out and then go back in after he’s go to the bathroom. But yesterday evening, we let the dogs out to go to the bathroom when he came in the hernia was still sticking out and would not go back in. He also had stopped eating and/or drinking anything by the time we got him to the Vet with a 24 hour ER service, and they recommended that at his age and the given prognosis, the best thing was to put him out of his misery. For any pet lovers here, you know what a hard decision it was to do that, but we’d rather that than to see him in pain and moaning and groaning and it would not heal itself. He had been my fishing buddy since he was born back in 2001. He LOVED to go out fishing and especially in the boat (again, see the photo), but soon as we’d leave the dock in 5 minutes he’s be so excited by getting to go fishing only to lay on the cool aluminum bottom of the boat and sleep till we got through fishing LOL... Just the work fishing like I said, sent him into a fit. He’d go outside and jump into the boat, which was almost 4ft off the ground when it was on the trailer. All our other dogs could take it or leave it as far as fishing goes, but Chico went berserk. Then, I didn’t get to do much fishing this yr as my back and knee has been really been acting up, but I went bank fishing at a friends lake just this last week and something told me to take Chico with me. I did and he loved it of course, even without the boat. I’m sure gonna miss the old boy cause he always let me catch the most fish LOL.. We lost his Momma Peanut back on April 17, 2014 at the age of 15 as well (April 17th is my birthday, so that kinda put a damper on that birthday, but Peanut was in a lot of pain as well, so it was also good that she was no longer in pain and now neither is Chico. Sorry for writing a book, but he was a part of the family. He was actually my son Daniel’s dog, but he lives in an apt. that won’t let him have pets so Chico lived here. Re: [VFB] New Zealand
Oh my, I am envious. I loved my fishing time in New Zealand. My main fly was the Hare and Copper. It is kind of like the Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear. I caught a lot of fish with it. I did not fish but maybe an hour around Rotorua. A couple of small streams that entered the lake. I fished the Tongariro with really good success and a number of rivers on the South Island. I would suggest that you contact a local fly shop and get current information. If you are taking your own equipment be ready to spend time being "sanitized" It took half a day for me to clear my equipment and pay the fees. Hope you have fun. I would go back in a heart beat. JimmyD, Got this post but no message attached. Are you giving us the silent treatment? I feel better about the VFB now that we have another 2 swaps going on. Maybe more will start up soon. Update on Fantasy Flies: Just hired my sister-in-law (who moved here) to run the video productions for the flies and rope-dubbing efforts soon to come. Once she gets the editing down, we'll post a rope-dub teaser video to Youtube to introduce it and my channel. Down the road, we'll update the website, Face-book, Pinterest, whatever works. I've been way too busy to deal with this extra work, so maybe now it can happen and I can get some fly projects done.
