ah, the ole CMS verses BLOG comparison... ;-)

many blogs are CMS and vise versa.  many hybrid mixed breed apps
out their. still, you can most likely always 'blog' using a CMS.

anyways, i last edited wikipedia... and appled this line:

"Blogs often take advantage of RSS for syndication to other web sites and aggregator software (rss readers). "

read more - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlog
its survived a week ;-)
i've said this many times... RSS does not make a blog a blog.  it allows a blog to participate in the blogosphere.
RSS makes a blog a better blog, of course.  but thats besides the core argument.
Simply, if Joe Schmo blogs, but doesnt give 2 shits about an audience
of strangers and therefore doesnt use RSS, you still need to call
Joe's blog a blog.  Take the geekery out of the equation for the
sake of logical definition... and you'll lessen the complcation of this
debate.

videoblog is a blog... where video is primary content.  adhering
to my opinions above,  is why i have also been heard proposing the
use of another second term to label rich media distribution via blogs
and XML syndications... like audioblogs and podcasts... videoblogs and
whatevercasts.  Apple will force feed us 'video podcasts' soon
enough.  i still like vodcasts. Not everyone who vlogs will 'cast'
with RSS.

over and out.

2005-08-05 Thread troylemaire

Ok, I will admit that this is a spam by definition, but I would like
to defend my actions.  I didn't boast, brag, or pretend to be some
random user.  I have been following this group and I am sincerely
interested in VLogging.  This week I got confirmation that I am on
the VLogIt Beta testing list and fully intend to VLog the creation
of the directory and apparently I will have to include this event.

I tried to present my information in the most not "used car
salesman" way I could.  If you look I use my real name, you can even
look me up on the internet to find me.  Even though I had listings
for my commercial site I told you upfront that I was using it for
Beta testing and I have since removed any links to my commercial
site so as to stay away from any controversy.  I honestly didn't try
to drive any traffic to my commercial site, I just had to wait for
some people to add their sites, as I didn't want to add them myself.

So while the site is not finished, as can be seen by Raymond's
review, I have been working on it for the past couple weeks and I
decided to release what I have so that people can start adding their
sites.

After saying all of this, I ask that you give me another chance

[videoblogging] Lisa From Walk LA With Me Interviewed on KPCC-FM

2005-08-05 Thread Gena

I flipped the radio on to a local NPR (National Public Radio) station
to listen to a new show called Past Sunset.

The topic of the show was talking about, establishing and discovering
community in the Los Angeles area. One of the first people he talked
with was fellow videoblogger Lisa from Walk LA with Me
http://www.walklawithme.com

You will be able to hear the conversation she had with David Cruz. She
was in Pasadena on Fair Oaks and Walnut at the time of recording.

Her audio segment is not posted on the sight yet probably by Monday at
the latest at http://www.scpr.org/programs/pastsunset or
http://www.kpcc.org The audio is in Real Player format. If you have
Real Alternative like I do you be able to hear the segment.

Yea Lisa!

Re: [videoblogging] Taking my videos down (Freeplay Music discussion)

Hi everyone:
At 10:05 AM 8/5/2005, you wrote:

Subject: Re: [videoblogging] Re: Freeplay Music: Warning

Erin, this whole discussion has really helped me, actually. I am not
a
Freeplay Music user. If I were, at this point I would consider such
a
letter to be a Cease & Desist order, take down the offending
music,
and let them take me to court if they really needed the
$200.
That's my opinion as well Steph.  Besides, you can't get into
trouble (at least with FPM) over something that's no longer linked to
your site, though the IA may have a few choice words.  But even
then, they would just assume avoid litigation themselves simply by
removing the offending the files and send you an email reminding you of
*their* TOS (if they don't ban you outright).
Erin wrote
Hey all,
I hate to be keeping this discussion lingering around but wanted to
let everyone know what's going on. In regards to what Stephanie
wrote,
and what others have said on and off list to me.. I've started to
wonder if maybe I am being too apologetic about this whole thing.
(Truth is, I've always been that way, and am quick to take blame and
apologize for things in order to keep peace and avoid
confrontation).
You're not being overly apologetic.  In fact, if anyone needs to
apologize, it's me for seeming to be complacent (sp?).
Anyway, after talking
extensively with my husband about this.. we have
decided not to pay the entire amount to Freeplay Music. To be fair,
I
am going to offer to pay for the music as if it were pro-rated for a
year. This afternoon, I will be taking down all my videos containing
complete selections of Freeplay Music (6 in total). They will still
be on the archive, but I will be requesting they be removed from
there
as well. Anyone know who best to contact at IA to do this? Could IA
get in trouble as well for continuing to host them? I would hate for
that to happen.
I'm seriously considering not even linking to the podcasts I've done so
far using their music (which is just about every single one of them), but
leaving the posts up as they go into what was covered on each
show.
I keep wrestling with myself
as to if I am doing the right thing or
not... but I have heard from more people who are of the opinion that
I
should not pay. I would gladly pay the money if 1)they didn't make
it
so easy for people to make a mistake. You don't even have to read
the
terms in order to download the music. Even when you do read the
terms,
anyone could make the mistake of reading "Private Non-Commercial
Use
(Non-revenue generating or associated)" and stop there, thinking
they
were safe. In my opinion, a much better way of making sure people
weren't abusing this is to have someone register on the site and
have
them actually check a box that says they "agree" to terms.
2)The name,
in and of itself, is misleading. For most ways this music is used,
it
isn't free at all. You see the name "Freeplay Music" and
can
immediately start downloading. Not a great idea if you ask
me.
I ranted on this on my podcast earlier today (which BTW will NOT have the
open & close I normally attach to each show) and an idea hit me that
if they were to charge a ONE-TIME flat fee $5 (or whatever the minilum
value of a Money Order is nowadays) per track download REGARDLESS OF USE,
they'd make a fuckin' mint.
I mean, think of it this way, how many times do you have to pay for a
gallon of milk at the grocery store before they actually consider it
yours to leave with?  Answer - ONCE - At the checkout counter.
When is the next time you pay for milk?  Answer - WHEN YOU GET
ANOTHER GALLON.  I've NEVER seen ANY business charge me for
something more than once.
Anyway, not that anyone will
probably care... but a lot of my most
recent videos will exist no more. I will probably try and fix them
and
eventually re-vlog them, but I'd rather be focused on posting some
new
content for now.
Same with my podcast.  I can't replace those, but I'll certainly
break the links to all the affected podcasts.  The others however

result of your experience with FPM Erin, the first thing I did was to
restrict access to that section to me and me only (as well as the board's

Where does it say a blog has to have a feed?

I don't think a blog has to have a feed. I personally don't use any
aggregate. I don't like them. If I want to see a site, I go to it
personally. That will not change... unless the aggregate becomes my
iPod (which I still don't have). Hopefully by then, I can tell it to
go to a site I want to view anyhow.

The key concept is still the same--content delivery (video, audio,
photo, text, etc) and feedback over the internet to whatever device
can get itself connected. It may not sound as sexy as vlogging, but
we're not doing anything new here that couldn't be done in 1994 with a
lot more money (and bandwidth)...

One thing I want to pass on to you and others is what I learned at a
legal session at BlogHer. There is a web site called Chilling Effects
http://www.chillingeffects.org

This is a catalog of the cease and desist letters that companies send
to internet users. It als provides info on how your rights.

Now if you are in violation of terms that is one thing but many
companies use C&D letters to stop comments about their companies, to
stop free speech and other mischief to suppress _expression_.

It is a project of the Electronic Freedom Foundation and a bunch of
Law Schools that are monitoring the use of C&D's.

You might want to take a look at the FAQ's and other goodies just for
future (or current) information needs.

One thing -- Epitonic is not necessarily podsafe.  They work out deals
with labels on a one-to-one basis where epitonic.com is the only host
permitted.  It's very likely that a label which does a deal with
Epitonic is happy to have a similar deal with vloggers, but that's the
extent of it, so you really should ask each time.

Yes, but as we all know, "blog" does not equate to "feed." You can
have a blog without a feed.  Blog is basically "easy way to post

That said, I think that videoblogs have their own special challenges
and work BEST as a feed with enclosures, if only because then I can
have them download in the background without having to wait for them

No feed. Not a vlog. This is just video on a website. Unfortunately, I
can imagine we'll see a lot of this kind of stuff called "vlogs".
Boo.

Not to spark the age old "what is a videoblog?" discussion, but I
think we've agreed that a videoblog must first be "video in a blog".

I will happily whistle, record and email an mp3 tune for anyone on this
list.

Here's a sample of whistling:

http://instantdocumentary.com/vlog/see.mov

State the mood you wish or the name of an old tune from the public domain,
how long you need it to be, and viola!

If the movie is already finished and you just need musical accompaniment,
upload it, send me the url and I'll do a custom whistle.

Goodwill.

1) adverts within the production (rocketboom)
2) adverts on vlog entry (google ads in sidebar)
3) reputation enhancement (pro gigs resulting from visibility)
4) pay-per-view
5) software licensing
6) hosting for fee (or sharing revenues from ppv)
7) build it and wait for a takeout
8) lecture circuit / books (relates to #3)

what's missing from the list?

Hope you like them. They are not really intended to stand on their
own. None of my vlog entries are-- it's an ongoing project, rather
than snippets. But they're quirky nonetheless.

Oh, sure, bring this up when the only paragraph I deleted from my
original reply was about how infrastructure is the most viable
business model for videoblogging, not content.

Incidentally, my mom struggled for years to get high speed internet at
her place. She owns a campground which is, literally, 5 miles from
NOWHERE, and it was a constant battle to dialup at her place. She
finally got it, though, thanks I think to the satellite TV service
(which was fine until their satellite fell out of the sky... but I
digress). When my husband and I were looking at a house that was
isolated and off the grid, we talked about point-to-point wireless for
high speed internet-- there are options out there. They're not always
cheap, but they are worth it.

[videoblogging] Re: The Friday Dialup Challenge

2005-08-05 Thread Philip Clark

My entry to the Friday Dialup Challenge is here, a little jam entitled
"Frankie Vs. The Ninja":

I have to give props to the awesome little doohickey known as Rhizome
(thanks Adrian). Since it requires small movie sizes, it seems
perfectly suited for Dialup Fridays. I uploaded the entire Rhizome
folder with bastard video children and the whole thing came to a
whopping 165K.

I'm not sure if I have this set up for the web properly--when I hit it
up in Safari it came up as "failed to load"--but then I hit refresh and
there it was.

Stephanie--thank you for pointing me towards some vlog entries that I
can watch, I'll check them out.

I agree. I think you're right and yet I'm still determined to do it. If
I can't dance then it's not a revolution.

> There's a design consideration that the content-producers (the

I wasn't trying to suggest that vloggers should dumb down their designs
in order to take dialup users into account. The Friday Dialup Challenge
was aimed at people like Raymond who enjoy the creative challenge of
working within limitations. Also, there's the purely selfish reason of
taking some pressure off my poor little modem, which is currently hot
to the touch and has smoke pouring off it.

> Join the 21st century.

Good advice but I'm looking to the 22nd century. I'm out here in the
country dreaming up the technology that will allow me to bypass
enclosures and RSS and beam images directly into people's brains.

Most of this stuff is licensed under Creative Commons, meaning most
likely you can re-syndicate it on your videoblog as long as you
attribute credit to the original artist.

Just be sure to check the license of the song before you use it.

I know Epitonic, for instance, makes the MP3's available for free
because they are distributed by indie labels and they just want the
song to be heard as much as possible and spread around.

The way it should be, I say.

I will try to check my e-mail a few times a week, at internet cafe's and also people's homes. if anything happens that you think specifically I should know about, then please e-mail me directly. I probably won't be checking the group list while I am gone, just because I can't do much with the vlogosphere while I am gone, but I will be reading all e-mails sent directly to me.

2005-08-05 Thread Erin Nealey

Thanks for such a quick response Raymond!

UPDATE:
My husband talked to Scott Shreer of Freeplay Music (he is much better
at remaining calm than I am!) and some good has come out of this.
Although we still are having to pay, it is only half. Another good
thing that came from it is that Scott was willing to listen to the
reasons why the site and terms could so easily be misinterpreted and
said he would take those things into consideration, maybe bringing
them up with others at Freeplay Music. Hopefully some changes will be
made there so that this doesn't happen to anyone else. Afterall...
this would be in the best interest of Scott as well as anyone else!

OK.. lets move on, this is done :)

Yeah, it's "vaporware".
I just like saying that.

And yeah, the chroma-keying stuff has tendency to get cheesy real quick.
I was at DV Expo East a couple weeks ago and Serious Magic had a big presentation going on for Visual Communicator.
It showed this ultra-cheesy spaceship background and these dudes just standing there in it.
It can be useful though.
The examples that vloggers have made have either been cheesy on purpose (Chuck), or not cheesy at all (Rene).
Just give vloggers the tools, they'll find some way to make them cool.

[videoblogging] Re: It's Happening

2005-08-05 Thread Steve Watkins

I find it sort of fascinating that Vlogit doesnt appear to be
available yet?

This is bound to make me speculate wildly that...

These people have the spoftware technology already, when videoblogging
appeared and got lively, they hoped this would be a great new use for
their technology, so they worked on a cut-down package called vlogit.
They doid communite here about it Initial feedback from this group was
along the lines of 'its interesting, but its really for a specific
kind of videoblog style, of which not very many current videoblogs
fit'. Some saw a use for things like autocue and greenscreen, others
were less than positive about such technologys actual use, and whether
the results have a kind of cheese or fake PR gloss or other unwanted
denaturalising effects on videoblogs that try to use such technology.

Anyway I defending bluescree/greenscreen and otehr technologies at the
time, I support their use in certain scenarios, but clearly no, most
videoblogs are not needing such things, or would only utilise them on
the odd occasion.

Anyway I dunno why they havent released the software, maybe they got a
similar impression. Im sure their existing software does what it does
well, but to me a software package that would actually help
videobloggers out would do stuff like:

Handle capture & compression to suitable format(s)
Enable user to choose soundtracks, photos etc from an online resource
of such material with suitable licensing info
Enable user to quote other videoblogs
Automatically subtitle the work
Other standard editing & titling options
Be capable of generating RSS with itunes & yahoo extensions, for users
who dont have great feed abilities in their hosting solution.
Guide user through attaching metadata, tagging & creative commons
license to their work
Connected to other services eg vlogmap (wow that google earth vlogmap
stuff is amazing by the way)
Handle uploading/distribution through some other method

Now that would be software worthy of being linked to in every 'how to
videoblog' article eh!

Related to this is the idea recently expressed in some quarters that
this group is anti-business. Now Ive ranted about certain business
practices before, so Im probably labelled as some anti-business nutter
by some. This is wrong, and I would, for example, be delighted for
capitalist entities to create the above software. I am against
anti-social businesses and business practises, with a special emphasis
on anti-social marketing, and stuff where the marketing exists more
than the product, or is very misleading. From the sorts of
people/businesses that have at times been criticised by this group, Id
say that hopefully my stance on antisocial businesses is compatible
with the groups stance.

Why am I waffling about this? Because theres been some talk lately
that this group is antibusiness and so seperate groups are needed. Im
all for extra groups, subsets of the whole, but I wanted to refute the
idea that business cant be talked about sensibly in this group. It
can, it always has been, and long may that tradition continue. People
should not be afraid to talk about such things here, and shouldnt be
afraid of a bit of helpful (or unhelpful) criticism either. People
should be cautious about overpromoting/overmarketing/overhyping
themselves, but people should always be careful of that stuff, not
just on this list, but in life. Maybe some marketing/PR people,
despite the entire point of the profession, are not actually used to
getting real feedback from real people, are not used to actually
hearing those who the marketing annoys. Well get used to it, the net
is here, and this information is actually potentially extremely useful
, if only people can get past taking offense at criticism.

Anyway sorry for the ramble all over the place, I want to make it
quite clear that this ranting about dodgy marketing is not directed at
serious magic at all, its offtopic. They are an example of a business
I have no problems with, they have products and took time to talk to
people here a bit, a while ago.  I suppose if vlogit software doesnt
materialise for ages/ever, then I might start to see it as bad form
for it to continue to get big press and stuff.

Cheers

Re: [videoblogging] Taking my videos down (Freeplay Music discussion)

2005-08-05 Thread R. Kristiansen

I have admin status on the IA and can "make dark". Send me your list
of movies off-list (raymondmk at gmail dot com) and I will make the
files invisible from the IA. The nodes on Ourmedia you can delete
yourself by going to the node and clicking edit whereafter you click
delete.

We at Ourmedia hope to make it easier for people to make content 'go
dark'. The reason we do it like this, btw, is that it is safer for us
to just make the files not available than to physically delete them.

I have been contacted by others who hosted "FreePlay" music on IA and
want it taken down after they heard about the FreePlay policy, so I
guess your message to this group regarding this has been very helpful
to a lot of people, Erin.

[videoblogging] Taking my videos down (Freeplay Music discussion)

2005-08-05 Thread Erin Nealey

From: Stephanie Bryant <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Thu Aug 4, 2005  9:50 am
Subject: Re: [videoblogging] Re: Freeplay Music: Warning

Erin, this whole discussion has really helped me, actually. I am not a
Freeplay Music user. If I were, at this point I would consider such a
letter to be a Cease & Desist order, take down the offending music,
and let them take me to court if they really needed the $200.

Hey all,

I hate to be keeping this discussion lingering around but wanted to
let everyone know what's going on. In regards to what Stephanie wrote,
and what others have said on and off list to me.. I've started to
wonder if maybe I am being too apologetic about this whole thing.
(Truth is, I've always been that way, and am quick to take blame and
apologize for things in order to keep peace and avoid confrontation).

Anyway, after talking extensively with my husband about this.. we have
decided not to pay the entire amount to Freeplay Music. To be fair, I
am going to offer to pay for the music as if it were pro-rated for a
year. This afternoon, I will be taking down all my videos containing
complete selections of Freeplay Music (6 in total).  They will still
be on the archive, but I will be requesting they be removed from there
as well. Anyone know who best to contact at IA to do this? Could IA
get in trouble as well for continuing to host them? I would hate for
that to happen.

I keep wrestling with myself as to if I am doing the right thing or
not... but I have heard from more people who are of the opinion that I
should not pay. I would gladly pay the money if 1)they didn't make it
so easy for people to make a mistake. You don't even have to read the
terms in order to download the music. Even when you do read the terms,
anyone could make the mistake of reading "Private Non-Commercial Use
(Non-revenue generating or associated)" and stop there, thinking they
were safe. In my opinion, a much better way of making sure people
weren't abusing this is to have someone register on the site and have
them actually check a box that says they "agree" to terms. 2)The name,
in and of itself, is misleading. For most ways this music is used, it
isn't free at all. You see the name "Freeplay Music" and can
immediately start downloading. Not a great idea if you ask me.

Anyway, not that anyone will probably care... but a lot of my most
recent videos will exist no more. I will probably try and fix them and
eventually re-vlog them, but I'd rather be focused on posting some new
content for now.

If someone from IA can get in touch with me off list... I can give you
the list of videos I need to have removed. Sorry if this is a hassle.
I just don't want anyone else to get in trouble.

Re: [videoblogging] The Friday Dialup Challenge

2005-08-05 Thread Stephanie Bryant

My blog Hold My Beer and Watch This!  (mortaine.blogspot.com) has
quite a few that are fewer than 2 MB, in particular the early ones and
more recent ones (Day 1's .mov format, Day 2, Day 3, Day 5, Day 9, Day
38, Day 42, Day 43, and Day 44-- under 1 MB are Day 9, Day 3, and Day
42, as well as the Day 1 .mov file).

After Meet the Vloggers, I realized I was letting my vlog entries
bloat too much, and I've slimmed things down a lot recently. I gave
myself an upper guideline to keep anything embedded below 10 MB, with
a goal of <3 MB for most entries; if I have a rare entry that's more
than that, I'll post it as an enclosure, but not embed it into the
entry (so if you view my vlog at the website, you won't be tearing out
your hair while your browser hangs).

One might argue that video-over-the-web just isn't for a dialup
audience. I know that sounds... cruel? Elitist? Whatever-- it's the
barrier-to-entry, and not one that vloggers have a whole lot of
control over, like web browser preference.

When my husband was working on the Kerbango internet radio, the
question came up repeatedly-- what about dialup users? The radio
didn't have a phone cord, no modem inside the device at all. What were
they going to do for those who didn't have a high-speed internet
connection? The answer was pretty obvious-- if you didn't have high
speed internet (this was 3-4 years ago), you weren't going to be
streaming audio onto anything. Streaming audio, like video today, took
too much bandwidth to reasonably download on a dialup.

Frustrating for you, perhaps, on dialup, but there you have it.
There's a design consideration that the content-producers (the
vloggers) aren't going to take too seriously, because the dialup
audience is small and getting smaller, not larger. Join the 21st
century. Get a high-speed Internet connection, directional wireless,
cable/satellite, whatever it takes, if you want to actually watch
vlogs. You'll never regret it.

Or, upload your own vlogs from within a "viewing vacuum" in which you
post-only and never really get to see what others are doing. I started
out that way, not really watching any vlogs until the second week or
so, because I wanted to develop my own thing first, and it can be kind
of refreshing to not be influenced by others' voices. But it means
you'll be in a creative vacuum as well, so unless you have a steady
source of inspiration (like I do), you may find yourself floundering
for things to say/do.

VlogIt has been around for a few months now.  When the corporate
media outlets started writing articles about videoblogging, VlogIt
usually was mentioned.  They have a strong marketing team and
Serious Magic has some seriously good software, like the chroma-keying
stuff for example.  They're also tied into Vlog.com.

VlogIt isn't for everyone, but if you want to look like that stuff you
mentioned, it's the way to go.  Rocketboom uses the newsdesk
model, and I'm sure others will in the future.

[videoblogging] NYC Meetup - August 14 - NEW Location

2005-08-05 Thread Adam Quirk

Hey vloggers,

A reminder that the NYC meetup is next Sunday, August 14th at 6:00pm.

I think we have outgrown Art Bar, so I propose we move over to one of these places:

Saga - http://www.saganyc.com/ -  Lex & 39th

Bryant Park - http://www.bryantpark.org/ - 42nd - Cafes nearby in case we want food.

I vote for Bryant Park.  If it's raining on Sunday, we'll coordinate via email and go to Saga or another choice.

If you'd like, join this group to be kept informed of our meetups:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nyc_vloggers/

Then vote for our location here:
http://tinyurl.com/cb29x

That will keep our localized messages off this main list.

It will also be easier to keep track of who is coming, who's out of town, who's busy writing best-sellers, etc.

That is all.  Carry on.

What amuses me is the quote: "...generates a personal video that looks
much like a regular TV newscast or documentary."

That pretty much sums up exactly what I *don't* want to see when

Not completely sure what Andrew is talking about, but there are a couple
of ways to "hide" the location of a movie.

wow.. there's actually one i already know how to do!!!

actually while i've been posting very few videos lately i have been
delving back into my (ahem..) interactive video roots... i've been
looking at what possibilities MAX/MSP/Jitter can offer to vlogs.. i
haven't updated my copy for a year or so but AFAIK you still can;t
make web apps with MAX, although you can now make cross-platform
stuff.. we'll see.. it does offer some great possibilites for creating
authored movies though..

Okay.

I'm one of the ones who keeps bringing up money on the vidconferences and
elsewhere. The amateur philosopher in me can't help herself.

Clearly - with the advent of RSS - there is big money for big things in
videoblogging, We got front row seats to watch the process.

As I sit on the sidelines between innings, I wonder about how to begin to
change hierarchy and consumerism from and in the microcosm of the
neighborhood.

One of the fiscal policies that emerged is "pay more". Schlomo, that's it.
You got it. Bingo.

Good will.

Damn. It warms the cockles of my heart.

Jan

P.S. Andrew, tell me! Great list.

I'm adding 5 bucks to any hack that makes the book that comes from this list.  I'm not
kidding.

That means, if the editors take your "hack", and you have been a part of this list since
RIGHT NOW, I am adding five bucks per hack.
