[videoblogging] Re: Movie Maker Crashes All The Time

2005-08-15 Thread strollingbones2

There is a resource for Movie Maker at http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/

I had the same problem. It turns out that MM is alergic to the DIVX
codec, which is what my little camcorder exports. I switched up to
Adobe Premiere Elements, which is supremely stable.

I still fire up MM when I want to compress a video down to just a few
megs.

Who organized this one and who is attending? I might be able to make
it to this one. My home town is Falls Church, VA, which is about 10
minutes away from there, so I'd be really happy to participate.

I know Jonny Goldstein organized the Tysons Corner event on Sept. 17,

Thanks for the heads up on the size of my sig. I just changed to
plain text. I was set to compose rich which was not my intention. Is
this better?

This metadata thing is huge for me because I find myself spending as
much time typing metadata in different fields as I do shooting,
editing and compressing the video in the first place. It would be
much better if I could enter the metadata ONCE inside the video and
not have to fill out all these submission forms to ourmedia.org,
blip.tv and Feedburner - not to mention my websites.

Hey Chris,I appreciate the compliment and recommendation -- However, I do still think that there is value in personal media.I am working on a politically-focused documentary with a focus on developing tools for scalable collaboration, but this doesn't discredit
the value gained from vlogs that are focused on personal _expression_.There is a certainly a difference in audiences, as well as a difference in function, but I don't distinguish between an appropriate or
inappropriate use between the two.The relative appropriateness of any vlog is a value judgment that is up to each vlog consumer to make -- I don't see a universal right or wrong way that anyone should use their vlog.
Just as there is an emerging ecosystem of blogs that range from personal to explicitly political to a business-oriented knowledge management system, I believe that the same will be true of the vlogosphere as it
continues to grow.Diversity is a good thing because we're all not interested in the same things. With that said, I do think that there is a lot of potential for using vlogs for political activism.
In fact, that is one reason why I'm using the open source Drupal / CivicSpace platform, because a lot of the tools that I want to create for collaborative media could feed into the political campaigns of the
election cycle.CivicSpace came out of the community software that the Howard Dean campaign used, and I've been in contact with some of the developers focusing on how vlogs will be integrated into political campaigns.
I'll probably be asking for more feedback and brainstorming at some point, but I just wanted to make it clear that it is not my intention to discredit the legitimacy of how anyone else chooses to use their vlog.

Hey Chris, I realize that you were not referring to my project in
particular when expressing your grievances with what you describe as
all the narcissists feeling they are at the center of the universe with
videoblogging.

But you did say that I use vlogging in an appropriate way -- which
implies that everyone else is using vlogging in an inappropriate way.

I disagree with this implication for the reasons that I explained in my
previous message.

And my message started by: I am
I also realize that you are expressing your opinion -- It's just that
I'm not personally comfortable with a recommendation that comes with the
discrediting of the works that others are doing.

I don't think that this is really necessary.

There are different functions and different audiences for different
vlogs, and it sounded like you were projecting your value system of by
implying what is appropriate and inappropriate for all vlogs.

If this wasn't your intention, then I'm sorry that I misread you.

I think it's important to realize that not all vlogs are going to appeal
to all people.

And if someone's vlog doesn't appeal to you, then that doesn't mean it's
worthless or meaningless.

Just not something that you're interested in watching.

[videoblogging] Re: Trying to get back in the saddle

2005-08-15 Thread mikehudack

Hey Taylor,

It's Mike from blip. I'm sorry you've had trouble with our HTML editor! Some of what
follows is a little technical, and I apologize for that!

We use the built-in rich text editor that ships with Web browsers to make it easy for our
users to write HTML without having to actually know HTML. When we can't find that built-
in editor we use just a regular text field. In your case, I think you're using Safari on OS X
10.4 Tiger, which is the first version Apple shipped a rich text editor with. So in your case,
using Safari, the cursor flipouts are caused by a native Safari component written by Apple.
Don't get me wrong, though. It's still our problem and we'll still work to fix it.

I think that with blip, like with Blogger, you may have better luck editing HTML with
Firefox. But we do make the effort to support it on Safari, and I can promise that it'll only
get better.

I'm really happy that you like our overall set-up, and I hope you'll bear with us as we work
to support as many browsers and environments as possible in as rich a way as possible.

If you have any other issues with blip, or if this one really gets your goat, please e-mail me
directly and we'll work to make sure you're happy. You can also IM me on the AOL instant
messenger network as mikehudack if you get stuck or anything or even just want to chat.

Yours,

Mike

where the graphics and buttons plain outright never appear in one or

The Blip.tv html editor is so bad I had to stop going there. Too many
random curser flip outs. I'm giving them a week to get their act
together. Then I'll try again. I like their overall setup. But not
 the html wild wild text.

2005-08-15 Thread Chris Baudry

Hey Kent;

I thought my previous message would close the matter which was pretty minor in my opinion.

Though I liked your video blog, when I read:

There are different functions and different audiences for different vlogs, and it sounded like you were projecting your value system of by implying what is appropriate and inappropriate for all vlogs.

I feel that I am facing a teacher/preacher making sure he gets the last word.

But as you said: If this wasn't your intention, then I'm sorry that I misread you :))

Anyway I spend my timeprojecting and obviously I need to be talked down.

About: And if someone's vlog doesn't appeal to you, then that doesn't mean it's worthless or meaningless.

I think this is pretty profound. There is enough matter to write a thesis here.

Best regards,

Chris

Hi pete

Could you help me with template hacks? I have tried
psoting on the wordpress forum but had not luck. I
have been in touch with the author of postie a plugin
that supports mlogging so I can get images and
potenially video by email into the site. he has been
really helpful so that the postie plugin, loads an
image a thumbnail and then a full size image on click.

The thing I just can't work out is how to get my
template to do what yours does which is to open the
full size image on a page with the comment form below
it.

On Mon, 15 Aug 2005 18:20:56 +0200, Kunga [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Regarding the Show Movie Properties entry dialog box. Can only the
author change those? What's to keep anyone from changing all that
 after they save a download?

Certainly anyone with Quicktime Pro can change those properties. I don't
know if people can change them using just the Quicktime Player. This is
normal behaviour, and not something to be afraid of. If you send me a Word
document I can change the Author property of that document also.

I also noticed that I can adjust the tone, volume, balance audio -
even kill all sound with a MUTE check box - controls as well as make
the movie auto play when opened in the Presentation Pane of the meta
 data.

I hadn't noticed that. Pretty neat. QT Pro grows on me still. :o)

I wish that the description field would automatically expand so
you could read a long description more easily.

Yes, the interface of QT Pro sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. $30 is
$30 though. :o)

the code. I see the description field is not displayed in the info
panel AT ALL and that only six out of the ten fields 1Title, 2
Copyright, 3 Artist, 4 Album, 5 Author, 6 Director, and NOT the
Producer, Description, Software, Comments are listed in that order
WITHOUT their field names so I am adding a coma space with the field
name (IE Artist etc) after those names so someone looking at the
meta data Movie Info can tell who's whom in that area under the Title.

I don't think that's a good idea. Adding that , Artist to the field
value will really mess things up for machine readers. It will make your
entered data almost unusable for non-QT Pro users. E.g. if FireANT starts
to read these metadata fields it won't know to strip your added
descriptions. It's my impression that adding that extra explanatory
information will discourage software such as FireANT from using the
metadata because the data is bad.

QT Pro shows the data the way it shows it. People can click in to see the
details in Movie Properties if they want the details.

That blows. These fields should be displayed and they should be
accessible by the databases in the repositories so that a keyword
search will use all of this metadata like Spotlight does to find them.

Showing everything under Movie Info would make that dialogue too complex.
I think Apple has done the right thing here by showing the most important
fields under Movie Info. Those who wish more can click their way to Movie
Properties.

*Any* search engine can read *all* metadata no matter if it's showing
under Movie Info or not. Ourmedia *can* read your Description even though
it's not displayed under Movie Info - they don't at the moment, but they
can.

I want to lead a Free The METADATA movement to make Apple and
Microsoft include all of it in their info boxes. What do you say
Vbloggers? Can I get an AMEN?

I'll settle for people adding a title, author, blog permalink and
copyright information. :o)

People won't add this info unless the services use them for something, and
the services won't implement because noone is using the fields. It's a
chicking and egg situation.

[videoblogging] Re: books + theory reading

2005-08-15 Thread Anne

i think that the best way to encourage others to create content above
and beyond the personal anecdote (if that's what they want to do), is
through example. there is absolutely no need to dismiss the videos of
others on this forum. doing so is counterproductive.

while i'm sure that chris didn't mean it to be, the language used to
express his opinions was needlessly inflamatory.

vlogging is a new genre. just like art video, when it first arrived on
the scene, experimentation with various methods/subject matters is not
only inevitable, it's also necessary. many of the first art videos
created were navel gazing exercises that took the new ability to
create long takes to the extreme (andy warhol's sleeping videos come
to mind).

alot is made of the signal to noise ratio. the fear is that, if there
are too many boring videos, the video blogging project will be
imperiled. nonsense. link to what you love and the rest takes care of
itself. curate a site of videos that you find important/interesting.
comment on them. link to them. become a vlog critic. write history.

[videoblogging] SEATTLE: Anti-war Concert Tonight - Seeking Video Blogger

2005-08-15 Thread Jack Olmsted

David Rovics, a globe trotting war protest singer/songwriter will be
performing in Seattle tonight at 7:00 pm (doors 6:30) at The Tribal
Space at The Chocolate Factory, 3400 Phinney (in Fremont). It is a
benefit with Stop the Wall Campaign – US.

I cannot make it to Seattle to record David's performance or
interview him on camera. If you have the time, would you interested
in the project?

Listen to all of David's music at: www.soundclick.com/davidrovics

On August 13th, 2005, David wrote a song for Cindy Sheehan, the
mother of a soldier that was killed in Iraq. She is currently camped
outside Bush's ranch waiting to meet him. Google her name and
you'll learn all about it, if you haven't heard.

(song lyrics are at the top on the main page of www.davidrovics.com)

David will be performing the song tonight for the first time and
releasing it as a downloadable MP3 on Wednesday.

Multimedia, TV producer Shannon Kringen, a list member, is set to
interview David before the show with her digital still camera.

I'm seeking a video blogger that can record the interview, and clips
of his performance tonight with a camcorder and post the content
ASAP online.

I don't think there are any hard numbers on video blogging as it is still

out that a Pew/Internet survey released January 2 of this year found that
only 38% of Internet users even knew what a blog was -- 62% did not.

[videoblogging] Politics calling??

2005-08-15 Thread Randolfe Wicker

There is going to hundreds of demonstrations this
Wednesday in support of Cindy Sheehan's mother who has been camping outside
President Bush's ranch asking to talk with him about her child's death in the
Iraq war.

Any vloggers interested in this might consider
covering the local event nearest them. Someone, somewhere, just might
catch some red-state police bashing in a blue-state head.

Anyone interested can check out the event nearest
them at:
http://www.moveonpac.org/event/events/index.html?action_id=24

Remember, Matt Drudge put himself on the map by
breaking the Monica Lewinsky story. We need some expose video appearing on
vlogs to show the power of video blogging!

Re: [videoblogging] stats

2005-08-15 Thread Randolfe Wicker

I can't give you the source but somewhere I saw a
figure that said there were 1100 vloggers worldwide. However, Steven says
last January only 38% of Internet users even knew what a blog was. The fact that
today there are 14.2 million bloggers (40,000 new ones daily) shows how much
growth vlogging is going to experience.

Of course, vlogging will never equal the numbers of
blogging. But 14.2 million voices makes for stiff competition being heard
and standing out. Video is also more "convincing" than the written
word. We've all seen news stories about some kids who burned down a house,
beat up someone, wrote racist graffiti, etc. and then were caught and convicted
"because they videotaped themselves in the act".

Well, a vlog showing a crime, beating or rape will
force attention to be given to the event. I'm waiting for the first vlog
to create a news sensation just like the home video of the beating of Rodney
King did a few years ago.

Once those political activists who actively
document injustices and deplorable conditions in our society discover vlogging,
we'll really see the "unheard voices of today" becoming the "heard voices of
tomorrow"!

Hi Kunga - not surprised by the RSS fact. I remember a survey on developers
put their real knowledge of Xml at around 15% - the guys expected to use the
Xml from Rss.

I'm still not sure RSS is (should be) anything more than for integration
anyway - I think we'll start to see some apps that use Rss in different
ways. Aggregation is ok, but soon (as in my case) it starts to overload too.

I like adoption being low (but guaranteed to increase as in vblog) - give
you a start against the big guys who'll only go for it when everyone else
has.

Re: [videoblogging] recording video directly into a PC program

2005-08-15 Thread Tim D

Jay,

Here's what moviemaker says in the help section under video capturing:

Capturing video
You can capture video and audio to your computer by using Windows Movie
Maker. To begin capturing, a video capture device must be connected
properly and detected on your computer by Windows Movie Maker. Some audio and
video capture devices and sources that you can use include a digital video (DV)
or analog camera or VCR, a Web camera, a TV tuner card, or a microphone. You can
capture
content live or from video tape.

When capturing video and audio in Windows Movie Maker, the Video Capture
Wizard proceeds as follows:

Select the capture devices you want to use. For more information about
choosing capture devices, see Choosing a
video and audio capture device.
Specify where you want your captured audio and video file to be saved. For
more information about choosing a destination for your captured audio and video
file, see Choosing a saving
destination.
Choose the video setting. For more information about choosing a video
setting for capturing video and audio, see Choosing a video setting.
If you are capturing audio and video from a video tape in a DV camera or DV
VCR, choose the method you want to use to capture video and audio. For more
information, see Choosing how to capture
from a DV device.
Capture the video and audio. For more information, see Capturing video and audio.

 Note

If you have a DV camera connected to an IEEE
1394 port, the camera must be turned on for it to be detected by Windows
Movie Maker.

So...it looks like the answer is yes, you can directly record into
moviemaker. E-mail me if you need me to research anything else on
MM.

so what i want to do is record into a PC editing program, so i can edit, export.

[videoblogging] Getting Camp Casey to load.

2005-08-15 Thread Randolfe Wicker

Anyone who had trouble reaching Jack Olmstead's
link, "A video walk through Camp Casey" has to copy both the underscored blue
line and then paste it along with the second line which says "casey512K.mov"
attached for the movie to load. It's a pretty long video. Most
interesting segment is at the very end where you get a larger view of all the
cars, etc. parked along the highway by the camp and a touching "Veterans for
Peace" white-cross miniature graveyard with names on the individual crosses and
flowers throughout.

These protestors look like those who first opposed
the War in Vietnam. They also look like a collection of people that the
notorious and vain-glorious Texas Rangers would club in a heart beat. I
graduated from the University of Texas in Austin and know the Texas Ranger
mentality very well.

Let's hope the cameras are rolling when either Bush
and Company get hot under the collar and start barking or the local Rangers
start "cleaning up the trash" (as they would probably describe it). Even
video taken with a still digital camera or one of those cell phones would be
enough to post in a vlog. Lots of people don't realize they can be
videotaped with some of the latest cell phones. That gives "undercover"
vloggers a greater chance of capturing an event than the huge visible cameras of
commercial broadcast media.

Song for Cindy Sheehan
David Rovics

Casey was a good boy
He treated people well
And his momma loved him
Anyone could tell
She'd send him off to school
Pack his lunch with care
When he came back home she hugged him
With her fingers in his hair
Cindy, she loved Casey
And when all is said and done
She is every mother
And he was every mother's son

When Casey was a little older
He spent his time each week
In that church in Vacaville
In the service of the meek
In the service of his city
In the service of the lord
With his momma in the pews
All the time they could afford
And if their love alone could save us
Then the world would be one
She is every mother
And he was every mother's son

People thought the priesthood
Was where he'd someday be
So some folks were surprised
When he joined the army
The recruiter told him
He wouldn't have to fight
Cindy hoped this was the case
And prayed for him every night
That was before they sent him
To the desert with a gun
She is every mother
And he was every mother's son

His truck had no armor
And when it came under fire
It and half the soldiers in it
Became a funeral pyre
Cindy, she was sleeping
The moment Casey died
And she knew she'd never see him
Standing by her side
There was no consolation
No safe place she could run
She is every mother
And he was every mother's son

The president, he told her
He died for a noble cause
But Cindy's wondering
Exactly what that was
Since they never found the weapons
And now that Casey's gone
It seems that oil is the game
And Casey was the pawn
Cindy's got some questions
And so does everyone
Because she is every mother
And he was every mother's son

Questions Regarding Sponsorships, Underwriting, Ads, and Rates, etc.

Chris,
Good questions and ones I'll attempt to answer,
however, I have not dealt
with this per say. In my experience, either
someone has contacted the sales
or promotion department at the television station
where I worked or the
reverse, our sales or promotion department reaches
out to them. In either
case, I have been brought in after initial contact
has been made.

That being said, I think who you should contact
will vary by whom you seek
out as a sponsor. If it is a local business, you
might need to speak with
the owner. If you want to approach Coca-Cola, you
might need to go through
their media buyer. It also seems like many
businesses are set up
differently: Is it the Advertising, PR, Sales, or
Marketing department you
want to speak with? It could be different at each
one. I would suggest doing
a little research -- checking out their website
and whatnot -- to find out
what you can about their structure. And it
couldn't hurt to call up and ask
to speak with whomever handles buying advertising.

Many business are used to being hit up to
advertise on TV, on radio, and in
print. So it shouldn't be like you're the first.
I'd suggest calling rather
than emailing. Email is spam and is easy to
ignore. It is easier to
trash/ignore an email than it is to say
no to a person.

Ask yourself why the business would want to
advertise with you. What are the
benefits to them? Write them down and put it in
front of you before you
call. Last thing you want to do is be on the phone
with a decision maker and
sound like you don't know what you are doing. I'd
go so far as to practice
your selling speech. Record your voice and see
what it sounds like. Try to
eliminate verbal ticks like um...
ah... y'know or like. Become
comfortable with silence -- often people are
compelled to fill those small
voids with word, any words; it can become
problematic. Be very aware that
when people are nervous, they tend to talk fast
and breathe fast -- don't do
this, it doesn't sound credible. Also, don't
concentrate so much on not
being nervous that you aren't paying attention to
the conversation. Have a
pen and paper with you to take notes. And you
might want to put on a suit
and tie -- research shows even though the person
on the other end can't see
you, it affects your behavior and attitude. Also,
know what you want to sell
and for how much -- or at least have a fairly
strong idea. If they are local
try to set up a meeting to show them what you can
offer them.

If you do get a meeting, be prepared: ask to meet
in a room with a computer
connected to the Internet so you can show them
your website. Bring your
laptop if you have one. If you have time, do a
mock-up of your homepage with
their ads on it. Bring a CD with screengrabs of
your website in case there
is some crazy Internet/DNS issue. Bring several
copies of a one-sheet that
lists the benefits of advertising on your website.
Bring documents to back
up your claims (traffic numbers, etc.). Know how
and when they will be
billed and how and when they will receive whatever
you promise them
(pageview numbers, for instance). Dress
professionally. If they say no,
say, I can understand you aren't ready to do
this right now, Is it okay if
I contact you in a month or two to update you on
any improvements I've made
on my site and see if you guys might be ready
then? Or something like that
-- in other words, give yourself an opening to try
to resell yourself later.
Thank them for their time.

As far as a directory goes, I did a quick Google
search for list of media
buyers, and one of the results I got was: ( URL:
http://www.salesvantage.com/d/Media_Buyers/
). I can't speak to how legit or
useful the site is I just saw it for the first
time, but there is stuff out
there.

Maybe there is someone in the group who's had more
experience in this area,
who can contribute some additional useful
information? Hint, hint to all you
lurkers :)

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

It does not count search feeds and such. It does count duplicate feeds

My best guess right now is that there are about 1000 people putting
video in their blogs. There are 1000s more putting video on website,
but without the bloggy structure and without feeds. Of course,
definitions are difficult, and we can talk all week about that (please

maybe 10 or 20. I fully expect there to be 100,000 in a year.

Another easy way is to hit reply, and then in the message composition
window, plave your cursor after the blue underlined "camp" and hit
delete. This will bring the casey512k.mov part up to where it is
supposed to be so you can select the entire line and paste into a
browser. Then don't send the reply. :-)

Any long link like these that are likely to be wrapped to the next line

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Politics calling??

2005-08-15 Thread Beth Agnew

There's hotspots everywhere, with the potential to provide a Pulitzer
for the person who captures the story as we have never seen it before. I
remember getting an e-mail from a friend in Moscow in 1991 during the
attempted coup. His on-the-spot observations were chilling, and
transmitted immediately to his network of contacts. The blogs from Iraq,
both from residents and from soldiers, have given us unmediated (by MSM
anyway) comment on what people are observing and feeling there.

In a flurry of downloads when I was first using FireANT, there was a
clip from a protest in NY showing mounted police pushing people back.

I expect we'll see some video from Gaza within the next few days as that
situation unfolds. There are the big stories that will be told, but more
compelling are the stories from the local vloggers who will grab
whatever device they have, be it video phone or camcorder, and archive
what is going on in front of them.

I don't mind gushing like Juan to say that this medium is awesomely
powerful and it's exciting to be on the front lines. The Camp Casey
story is important inherently, but also important because videography
makes it so. How long before the mainstream media realize they need a
network of vloggers just as they mpw need a network of stringers to
report stories for them? And pay for it.
