You need to get a lot more specific. Like where this needs to be shot
would help. I've never heard of Beth Geisel. I doubt many others here
have either. You should at least provide a URL that isn't broken. You
need to put brackets around any long URL or go get a tiny url.

What scandal?
Where is he?
Who is he?
When do you need it by?
Why do you need it?

[videoblogging] Presented To Cupertino Final Cut Pro User Group

2005-08-17 Thread Kunga
Tonight I gave a presentation to the Apple Campus Based MacFilmMakers
Final Cut Pro Users' Group all about Videoblogging. I recommended
they all go to FreeVlog.org, ourmedia.org, archive.org,
NowPublic.com, Blip.tv, Blogger.com, Feedster.com Top 500 and join
this group. They were all blown away by what they can do with their
video now. I played them the Marc Canter piece that the Seattle team
shot last week that you can find on my site now. In case you don't
know it, Marc Canter is the equivalent of Steve Jobs among the third
party video software developers. Anyway I am having a ball acting as
Johnny Appleseed for this thing now.

Next up to Blog Business Summit tomorrow where I understand they are
IGNORING Video Blogging.

[videoblogging] Video Journalism Assignment

2005-08-17 Thread chris_koehn

Hi I used to post here a bit a while back. Anyhow, some of you may remember me, most will
not. Regardless...

I need help with an interview with someone I have contact with regarding the Beth Geisel
scandal going down right now, here's a link to one of the stories:

http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?
storyID=384334&category=ALBANY&BCCode=HOME&newsdate=7/30/2005

I need someone to go and interview a local, then send me the tape for editing and such. I can
try to cover some costs as best I can, but a volunteer effort is appreciated. There are a few
interested news outfits trying to get him on camera so time is of the essence! Of course the
videographer will be credited and thanked gratuitiously for any help.

If interested, please email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], I hardly check my yahoo email
anymore.

sounds like the problem is that your mpeg has muxed audio...
You need to demux it first (separate the video and audio tracks).

Michael Verdi tells me this is the way to do it on Mac:

Not sure how to do it on PC... there must be a way.

**Try to compress mpeg1** into quicktime.
Ok. I have an mpeg 1 file.  I am going to file-open-I find my mpeg 1
file and open it.  Done works fine.  Then I am trying to export it.
File-export. I make sure the options are for movie to quicktime movie.
Then I click options. The box for sound is not check and you can't
uncheck it.So I have clicked in the video box the setting button.  I
have tried to select different compression boxes, then going back to
the previous screen to check and see if the sound box is avaliable.
Nothing works. If I export the file there is no sound. I don't
understand. I am not receiving any error messages.
**However** If I just file-open my mpeg1 file and file-saveas
quicktime movie it will save as a quicktime movie. That is great, but
there is not compression or small file size. The file size is the same
 amount as the original mpeg.

**Also is there a way I can convert WMV to Quicktime? However when I
try to load my mwv files. I get an error message -240 is not a movie
file. Which makes sense because wmv is microsoft file and not
quicktime. I am just wondering how I can edit my clips then put it
into quicktime as a compress file..

[videoblogging] microphone flag - for Halcyon

2005-08-17 Thread Jan

Sorry, deleted your question (and the subject) which was about
how to make those ID boxes for microphones.

The technical term is "microphone flag".

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=breadCrumb&A=search&Q=&ci=8666 >

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22microphone+flag%22&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official >

You could make one out of corrugated plastic or cardboard. The
trick is to fill the hollow interior with foam - with a hole for the mic of
course. The foam is what holds the flag in place.

What error message is QT giving you, if any? Details, details, details.

[videoblogging] Anyone attending the Blog business Summit this afternoon?

Anyone attending the Blog Business Summit in San Francisco this

long.

I'd be happy to share ideas about video blogging with members of the

covered during the two days.

[videoblogging] favourite iMovie effects

2005-08-17 Thread Philip Clark

These are a few of my favourite iMovie effects ~

Brightness/Contrast - This one's pretty obvious. Whenever I'm doing
visuals for music I tweak up the contrast on just about every clip I
import. Turning up the contrast can inject a lot of drama into a dim,
murky DV clip.

Mirror - Instant abstract art video, everything looks sexy when you run
it through the kaleidoscope.

False Colour - I got this in Jerry's Plug-in Pack. It's the psychedelic
colour cycler. "Fire" is my favourite setting because it turns
everything into a gorgeous vision of Hell.

Jerry's Plug-in Pack is a free download:

I know there are a few of you who aren't afraid to spice up the visuals
a little bit, does anyone else have effects techniques they'd like to
share?

I also tried it with that avidfree.. Doesn't accept my mpeg1s.. Which
even pisses me off more..

Does anyone know how to turn my mpegs or wmv into quicktime??

Speaking of mic accessories...
Does anyone know where to buy or how to make one of those "boxes" around a mic (logos on 'em) that network folks have ?

Tape some fairly thick foam over the mic. You might even want to get some
fake fur to put over that in really rough wind situations.

Here's a brief tutorial:

[videoblogging] Re: Promoting Your vlog and a Big Thank You to the group

2005-08-17 Thread RadioMike Perazzetti

I'm the geek that posted the query regarding Underwriting and
Sponsorships.  First off, my questions to the podcasting groups raised
nary a whimper, except someone telling me that I posted this exact
question over at the podcast411 forum (I did not.  However, there was
some valuable information available there.)

It is a testament to you all that I received the responses that I did (I
kept all of them).  All of the responses were valuable, even the so
called "flame."  The discussion was heated, sometimes rowdy, but
infinitely Sincere and Valuable.  That was appreciated more than
anything.  I received a lot of responses that will probably inspire me
to vlog in the future on my web site (it may not be a "traditional" vlog
because I actually have a background in video production and would like
to cover live video of bands at local venues in Austin Texas (much like
I would like to podcast live shows the same way. And right now my hands
are full taking photographs of bands for my web site, and I am pretty
darn proud of the photos I take, so I'll have to find someone else who
is interested in doing that and maybe introduce the vlogs myself.  I'll
definitely have to watch a few thousand good vlogs of yours to get an
idea of the way to do it though.

In response to the well placed comment that I came off as a spammer, I
apologize for that and disagree with an explanation:  I have belonged to
this list for at least since March Or April of 2005 and have literally
combed the digests, email by email for valuable comments and links (and
have a large database of links to prove it).  I have become so involved
with this and in all of your personal emails to each other that I
honestly forgot that you all didn't know who the hell I am.  That's my
story and I'm sticking to it,  :-) but I finally realize that even
though I don't vlog yet, I can contribute to the conversation when
something comes up that I have a little knowledge of.  Such as Internet
promotions.

In regards to places to promote your vlog, I usually just take and
utilize each very personal mass email I send out for my Internet radio
show, or on the off weeks, the photos (This is just a personal writing
style that has developed without me realizing it.  And most people like
it a lot) and post it to a few press release sites (I ignore the press
release format for this, for reasons of time constraints each week), a
handful of google groups, a few bulk email sites, about 20 Bulletin
Boards, and about 20 Pluggie sites.  In addition to all of that, my
email is sent out to people who I have added to my radio show (Indie
artists) or who have requested to receive my weekly emails, but also to
over 35 yahoo groups as well.

With the exceptions of two or three press release sites, the press
release sites are Generic, the bulk email sites are generic, and the
pluggie sites are generic.  The Bulletin Boards, Google Groups, and
Yahoo Groups are ALL subject matter Specific.

It has taken me as long as I have done my show to gather all of this
information over the course of gradual time to evolve where it is
today.  There are several search engines to search for this kind of
stuff, but the best one is http://www.searchscanner.com/ which allows
you to search several search engines to see a myriad of results (among
other things, I am a research Fiend and so look for stuff all of the
time--- Now I want to find someone to help me build a CD Search Engine
to search for the lowest price CDs...).  You all should be familiar with
a Thesaurus and so if you get unsatisfactory results one way, you just
try a different combination of words.

Obviously, you should plug your work on the vlogging bulletin boards
(they should have a "spam" board to post press releases and your new
vlog, etc, and if they don't the boards should take a cue from the music
BBs and do it.  It's where I post most of my show emails (but I
neglected to say previously that the Bulletin Boards get a very
truncated version of my emails, just a few key links and a clever phrase
and title to check out my site.  The pluggie sites get an even more
truncated version of the Bulletin board posts, just a clever line, and a
link and title mostly.).  But you should also search out Bulletin boards
that are specific to your overall subject matter or your temporary
subject matter.

I would also recommend Guerrilla Publicity and Guerrilla Marketing by
Jay Conrad Levinson for a lot of other low budget and grass roots
promotion ideas.  The books are pretty cheap and can be searched for
here:  http://www.fetchbook.info

My first attempt at contributing to the group in penance for receiving
all of your valuable information and insight,

Mike Perazzetti

Due to some non-obvious things with the way Yahoo Groups' moderation
system works, some messages from new members of the Podcasters group may
have taken longer than usual to appear on the list.  With a gentle nudge
and some assistance from Ron Jeffries, this has been fixed!  :)  Thanks
Ron.

Any new members who posted mail to the list within the last month or so

If you’re not looking for exposure you may think about putting your stuff

RE: [videoblogging] Problems with Ourmedia

2005-08-17 Thread Steven Livingstone

I also personally think the power in
Ourmedia/IA will be future-proofing the web. WayBack has been one of my
favourite sites for years, but I often wish there was a full archive of the web
I could get to (no matter if it were slow). It is great for general interest,
research as well as things being where they expected.

In fact when I first mentioned it to the
company I worked for a few years back, they immediately put it in their
corporate magazine – got quite some interest stirred up as I was able to
show them their first ever web release.

An equivalent for audio/video media would
be an outstanding achievement and I’d love to see it. I suspect that there
is even money in it, if just to keep it going. For research purposes it would
be great!

[videoblogging] Audioblog's video podcast/vlog tool 90% released

2005-08-17 Thread Eric Rice

Hi all,

Just wanted to say that I know I promised a few accounts to some video conference folks to
try out our service and they'll go out around next week or so. I haven't forgotten you--we
just released our multi-format video upload tool over at Audioblog.com, which now supports
WMV, MPEG4, Quicktime (H.264, 3ivx, etc), AVI, 3GP etc, that will post to your blog. The RSS
enclosure component is being refined. :-)

Thanks!

Re: [videoblogging] video from a webcam

2005-08-17 Thread Jan

The best thing is not to get wind noise in the first place - it's very
difficult if not impossible to remove in post.

Tape some fairly thick foam over the mic. You might even want to get some
fake fur to put over that in really rough wind situations.

Here's a brief tutorial:

[videoblogging] My Date with Drew

2005-08-17 Thread Ryan Ozawa

An interesting write-up on an interesting film:

http://www.independentfilm.com/films/my-date-with-drew.shtml

Here's the official site:

http://www.mydatewithdrew.com/

I thought it might be of interest because of these comments from the
IndependentFilm.com article:

"'My Date With Drew' was shot with a Circuit City mini-DV camera,
believe me, the camera was nothing special. I asked Brian how he
handled sound. He said he really did only use the on board camera
microphone. And he admitted that post production was very difficult to
work around that. They edited the film in Final Cut Pro on a
Powerbook... Initial offers from the major studios came in but they
all pulled out at the last minute because no film has ever been
created like this. This film is the first in a new class of
documentaries and none of the studios knew how to release it. Do you
market it as a comedy? Or a Documentary? But Brian kept pushing and it
is being released."

Hey,

There are five camera modes on the Sanyo Xacti C4 that we use
(http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews_sanyo_xacti_vpc_c4.php):

640x480 30 fps SHQ :
http://dltq.org/media/cameratest/VCLP0008.MP4
(15.7 megs for 39 sec)

640x480 30 fps HQ :
http://dltq.org/media/cameratest/VCLP0009.MP4
(5.7 mb for 20 sec)

320x240 30 fps :
http://dltq.org/media/cameratest/VCLP0010.MP4
(3.5 mb for 34 sec)

320x240 15 fps :
http://dltq.org/media/cameratest/VCLP0011.MP4
(1.5 mb for 22 sec)

176x144 15 fps :
http://dltq.org/media/cameratest/VCLP0012.MP4
(0.9 mb for 16 sec)

I did not hamper the file in any way - just uploaded them as they came
off the camera.

Hope this illuminates your world :)

Best,

What I would try is to extract the audio, and then use Audacity (or
another audio editor) to try to filter out the noise. You can sample a
few seconds of noise then use the Noise Removal effect and see what
happens. Occasionally you'll get good results.

Not really - you cut out a bit of how horibble it is, cut out the high frequencies - but you'll still realize that the sound is distorted.  Whats good is a little wind sock, or fuzzy, that you put over your mic.  It cuts out almost all of the on location wind noise...On 17-Aug-05, at 1:42 PM, Randolfe Wicker wrote:Will filters take out noises caused by wind?  I have some great tape & didn't realize the zoom mike was so sensitive to the wind when it was held at a certain angle.- Original Message -From: JanTo: videoblogging@yahoogroups.comSent: Tuesday, August 16, 2005 1:10 PMSubject: Re: [videoblogging] video from a webcamSome options:1) Export and upload the sound file and send the url so we can listen to it and help diagnose what's going on.2) It might be a ground loop problem that can be solved by checking how you're powered.    a) If your camera is powered through your computer, try using a ground lift and record a bit to see if it's coming from power or    b) if you use a laptop, try recording a test with just battery power.3) If your camera is plugged into its own power, make sure it's plugged into the same outlet as your computer and test. While Josh is correct about being able to use high/ low pass filters, you'll note there can be a significant degradation in the overall quality of the sound so if you can find out and eliminate whence the hum originates you're much better off.Jan-- "It isn't done alone. Some options:1) Export and upload the sound file

[videoblogging] More Press

2005-08-17 Thread Pete Prodoehl

I was phone interviewed by a reporter from the Milwaukee Journal
Sentinel today. He's the religion reporter, and the angle was on how
churches could use videoblogging. He picked me because I live in
Wisconsin. (Found me using vlogmap.org!)

I was mainly just background for the concept of videoblogging, and will
probably only get a very brief mention if any, which is fine.

I did get to plug this group a little, as well as the other
videoblogging resource sites, and got into the 'sharing bits of my life
online' bit when asked why I videoblog.

I think the story will focus on these guys:

   http://www.brooksidebaptist.org/

They have a 'vodcast' here:

   http://www.brooksidebaptist.org/vodcastinfo

(Including links to FireANT and mefeedia.)

Though currently their RSS feed is not working:

   http://feeds.feedburner.com/BrooksideVideo

(I did contact them about it.)

  Subject: [videoblogging] Re:
  Compression
Regarding your compressed file ending up bigger than your
original:Your camera creates footage that is already compressed, and
thesettings you are using to recompress are for higher
quality/lesscompression than the original, hence the larger
file.Bitrate is the key. This tells the compressor how much data space
itis allowed to use per second for the video. I would start off by
looking at exactly what compression is used inthe files your camera
creates. Load a mov that came from your camerainto quicktime and go to the
window menu and select 'show movie info'.Format, FPS and data rate are
the important ones, if you let thisgroup know what they are, can give you
more specific advice. Also if you see someone elses video that you like
the looks/filesizeper minute of, then you can do 'show movie info' on that
and find outwhat bitrate etc they use. Unfortunately things can get a bit
morecomplex than this because theres all sorts of other options in
thecompressor software, factors that can affect how good the video
looksand how much it honours other settings like the bitrate youve
chosen. For example your camera might create videos that are mpeg 4,
320x240,12FPS and a bitrate of 256k. If that were so, there would be no
pointin recompressing at a higher resolution, framerate or bitrate,
becauseyou wont gain anything, just end up with larger files. The

The Conversations is a fun read, it's like hanging out with Walter,
which is what he and Michael did. Blink of an eye is distilled from
several lectures where Walter was asked to explain in 90 minutes or
less what he did as an editor, and he gave it a lot of thought as he
does with everything.  Well worth reading and knowing that he has
been the 'man behind the black curtains' on most of Francis' films...

Aloha e Bev!  Neat to see your name in this group.  Welcome to
videoblogging!  And hang in there.  Video has its quirks, but with
the folks on this list, you get the hang of it pretty quickly.  FWIW,
even when I was on a PC, I preferred Quicktime as a format, and yeah,
the fact that it was the native format of my camera helped.

When I got started, I used the instructions and aggressive
compression settings recommended here:

http://www.infodesign.no/artikler/Videoblog_with_Blogger_211004.html#c
ompressing

And also found some guidance on editing here:

http://hypertext.rmit.edu.au/vog/desktopvogging/desktopvogging.html

Looking forward to your first published video!

[videoblogging] Videoblog Workshop

2005-08-17 Thread Michael Verdi

Hey Ya'll
In the interest of thinking critically about the work that we make,
I've set up the Videoblog Workshop at http://
vlogworkshop.blogspot.com . Here's the basic idea. If you have a
videoblog that you would like to get some constructive feedback on
and/or would like to participate in a discussion to help people make
thier videos the best they can be, ask me to join this blog. (email
me off list please) In order to maintain a safe space for people to
offer their work for review, I'll be moderating the discussion
following the Critical Response format developed by Liz Lerman
( http://tinyurl.com/9fkow ) and limiting it to members of the blog.
The public can look in on the discussion but cannot comment. The main
thrust is to help people make their videos better. The idea is not to
help people make the video the way you would make it - it's to help
people make their video better, doing it the way they want to do it.

In addition to offering a video for feedback, members of the blog can
post any video that they think represents something done well that we
can all learn from. For these posts, I ask that people write a
thoughtful review of what they think is important about that example.

This is a starting point. We'll see how it goes. If we need to change
things, we will.

[videoblogging] Re: Compression

2005-08-17 Thread Steve Watkins

Regarding your compressed file ending up bigger than your original:

Your camera creates footage that is already compressed, and the
settings you are using to recompress are for higher quality/less
compression than the original, hence the larger file.

Bitrate is the key. This tells the compressor how much data space it
is allowed to use per second for the video.

I would start off by looking at exactly what compression is used in
the files your camera creates. Load a mov that came from your camera
into quicktime and go to the window menu and select 'show movie info'.

Format, FPS and data rate are the important ones, if you let this
group know what they are, can give you more specific advice.

Also if you see someone elses video that you like the looks/filesize
per minute of, then you can do 'show movie info' on that and find out
what bitrate etc they use. Unfortunately things can get a bit more
complex than this because theres all sorts of other options in the
compressor software, factors that can affect how good the video looks
and how much it honours other settings like the bitrate youve chosen.

For example your camera might create videos that are mpeg 4, 320x240,
12FPS and a bitrate of 256k. If that were so, there would be no point
in recompressing at a higher resolution, framerate or bitrate, because
you wont gain anything, just end up with larger files.

The same applies to audio, if your source footage is mono 24khz 64kb
then there would be no point recompressing to 24khz stereo 128kb or
whatever.

Regarding files being much larger than other videoblogs:

If followed fully the guides for compression that are on freevlog
should suit most people, it shouldnt create files that are way larger
than most videoblogs out there. So if you end up with really large
files, either you made a mistake with the instructions, or theres a
bug in some part of the process (for example if you used 3ivx to
compress with qt7, it seems theres a bug so it ignores your bitrate
settings and you could end up with much larger files than you should).

The only limitation with the guides is that they are (by design) quite
general, they have mostly been used by people using DV cameras where
the original videos are very huge (13 gigabytes per hour) because DV
isnt compressed as much as cameras that use mov, mpeg4 etc. So pretty
much whatever setting they use for recompression, it will be a lot
smaller than the original. And if they recompress with high bitrate
then the footage will look better than with low bitrate. But if your
camera only records at a low bitrate in the first place ther is no
point recompressing to a higher one, as I said earlier. This isnt too
much of a problem as the guides use a fairly low bitrate anyway, but
Id still like to know what settings your camera uses to give you the
most optimised settings for your setup.

Oh dear I hope my waffle hasnt made things more confusing. If in doubt
you could upload some really short clips to the net and I'll happily
take a look.

Cheers

Steve of Elbows

Can someone please tell me the difference between
saving as a "self contained" movie and as a "reference movie"?  It makes
HUGE difference in the size of a file (26 MB vs. 116 MB for this one

i dont know what to make of these guys.

i actually got a response to the email i sent to their parent company
yesterday, which was a nice surprise.  but it wasnt very helpful.  it
was basically a form letter that directed me to the "block your url"
page, which i dont think i can use, cause of the whole blogger/archive
setup i got goin'.

it also said that their mission is to take the burden off of our
servers, by hosting our videos.  sounds like a a bit of a crock to

I have no will to promote my vlog, but I would say that the best way
to do so is to just create content you like yourself (for whatever
reason) and if it resonates people will spread the word without you
doing anything.

I'm in the middle of experiencing this effect because a video I
created recently initially got a normal positive response (a few
vloggers liked it and linked to it, and that was cool), but a couple
of days later, it got mentioned on makemagazine.com (no link) after it
was shown at the Seattle Meet-the-Vloggers event.
So I make a comment with the permalink included and a few days later,
they make a new post with the link (which in itself was very cool.)

Then it reached Robert Scoble. :)

I'm now looking at ~30GB of traffic in just 3 days. My subscribers
increased in numbers quite significantly (about a 50% increase) and
I'm looking at a possible overshoot of allowed bandwidth if it
continues (in which case I'll just upload to blip.tv)

And apparently people at Google like it too.

I don't know why I wrote all that, but I think what I'm getting at is
that appreciated content will promote itself.

Oh, and in the spirit of not promoting myself. I'm not including any
links to my vlog :)

Cheers and sorry for the boring anecdote (even though it's not yet concluded),

Re: [videoblogging] Compression

2005-08-17 Thread BevSykes

I had actually checked out that tutorial and
have done some compression in WindowsMedia (cumbersome because I have to convert
from .mov, which comes from my camera, to .avi so that it can be read in Windows
Media.  That compression works but the files are then .wmv files and I note
that, at least Our Media, seems to prever Quicktime (.mov).  (Though I've
just checked blip.tv and see that the preferred format seems to be
.wmv)

RE: [videoblogging] Problems with Ourmedia

2005-08-17 Thread Steven Livingstone

On the last point. It is a good question.
I’m working on something that will make money (I hope).

I’ve yet to decide what people will
pay for (or rather what I think they will pay for) and how it will work.

I do wonder however if the basic problems
of scalability (in many dimensions) for everyone can be achieved when it’s
absolutely free. I may be wrong – I’m still thinking and listening,
but as many people say – you often get what you pay for. In fact it maybe
said that paying too little or too much is often a bad thing.

Flickr still charge, yet you can put files
on almost any site – have been able to do so for years. There’s
clearly a point at which people decide there’s a good reason to pay for
something (and remember that Flickr had to start somewhere before they had all
the cool features they have now).

Good luck with your film - $50k is a lot
to turn down [a father with one kid]!

[videoblogging] Problems with Ourmedia

2005-08-17 Thread cartouchefilms

Hi folks,

Is there an alternative to OUrmedia when it comes to uploading a
video.  I've been waiting for a 17 hours for my video to be available.
I will have a lot of video on my vlog.  Does paying a fee to publish
video insures a rapid service as opposed to a free site such as
Ourmedia?

By the way, my vlog is at: http://myfirstfeaturefilm.blogspot.com/

Thanks in advance.

Re: [videoblogging] Slashdot: YouTube -- The Flickr of Video?

2005-08-17 Thread R. Kristiansen

Yes, I found especially this comment interesting:

"
Video vs. Photos (Score:2)
by patternjuggler (738978) on Sunday August 14, @01:25PM (#13316670)

I used to be more into video, and may get back into it when HD cameras
are a little cheaper and when distribution over the internet is
easier- but currently I find taking still pictures much more
rewarding.

The first thing wrong with video is that it has a default and
sometimes fixed playback speed. Some players have fast forward and so
forth but it is usually clunky to use, and some compression formats
make scanning the video difficult. The result is most videos are very
boring. With a bunch of pictures, it's very easy to move forward and
backward at whatever speed I want, since most viewers understand
that's what the user wants to do (although some shitty sites out there
force a slideshow playback).

It's much lower quality than a picture from a similarly priced device.
I'd rather look at a high res series of photographs capturing a few
frames of something in motion rather than a smooth but thumbnail-sized
video of equivalent size.

It presumes too much of what the viewer wants to see. A large
photograph allows my eyes to scan to parts of interest at my leisure,
a video typically reflects exactly what the person recording was
interested in, flicking from thing to thing or over concentrated on
something uninteresting to me personally.

It requires much more skill to capture well. You have to hold the
camera steady through out the entire video, not just for a fraction of
a second to take a still picture. A poor photographer who shoots a lot
of pictures will probably end up with a few that could pass off as
nearly professional, but a crappily taken video stays crappy no matter
what.

Unless you set up a camera on a tripod, video taping something really
removes you from the event because it requires constant attention on
the tiny lcd screen rather than experiencing everything normally. To
everyone else you don't even have a face, you're just a video camera.
Taking a picture is a discrete event, inbetween you put the camera in
your pocket or bag and are just experiencing everything normally
again.

It is more annoying to have your video taken than have your picture
taken. There's something more respectable about someone taking
pictures than taking video. Video will capture little annoying things
about you that you dislike, the way you said something or some
mannerism, but a picture is just a tiny slice.

It's difficult and very time consuming to edit. And of course any
editing is presumptuous of what the viewer would like to get out of
the video. Editing with pictures is natural- just don't upload the
pictures that turned out bad (and like I mentioned before, it's easy
to skip over uninteresting pictures quickly).

The file sizes are huge, unless quality and length is compromised.
This makes video hard to share and distribute, over the internet or
even in person. Everyone you know will probably hate you if you force
them to sit through 30 minutes of vacation video, but if you let them
flip through a book of pictures they're going to like it much more.
Someone on the internet may invest very little time to look at some of
my pictures [flickr.com], but it's doubtful anyone is going to
download a video for ten minutes without a good reason (like the
promise of female nudity, say, or the recommendation of a trustworthy
blog).

Perhaps many of these problems will be addressed eventually, sites
like youtube may lead to some solutions (the flash playback seems
awful- how do I save the video and send it to someone, burn it on a
dvd, edit it into my own remix of various found videos?)."
