[videoblogging] licenses and permissions

2005-10-19 Thread Deirdre Straughan

I noticed this in the YouTube terms of use:

"(ii) You have the written consent, release, and /or permission of each
and every identifiable individual person in the User Submission to use
the name or likeness of each and every such identifiable individual
person in the manner contemplated by the Website and these Terms of
Service. "

Some others would have us swear to similar statements.

Is anyone actually doing this? I remember a few in this group have
mentioned getting taped video statements of permission, but is anyone
actually handing out a form for signatures?-- best regards,Deirdré Straughanwww.beginningwithi.com (personal)

I can't remember exactly.  And I had to think about after I first
watched it too.  I think maybe a TV show used that in an opening
sequence.  The guy was looking away from the camera doing
something else, then turned to face the camera and they froze it.
Whatever though, I haven't seen it in a long time, and it's a great
shot.

Just this past year I've really started to pay attention to the
different types of shots used in films and video.  It's completely
changed the way I watch them, for better and for worse.  I used to
just take in the whole thing, now I analyze every frame.  I'm
learning a lot.

You use some really creative techniques.  I like it.

well, I'd give the guy an F for tack, but he has some points. He says:

>>2. some classes on learning how to hold the camera steady.

Like I said not tactful, but the camera movement is a bit erratic. I know I've
seen other
pieces by you Steve that are rock steady and I've wondered if you had a tripod
or someone
else holding the camera. Now I can understand that if you are making a personal
vlog then
"professional" methods don't apply, but I think if someone is aspiring to be a
citizen
journalist, you should be held to a (slightly) higher standard and a staedy
hand with the
camera I think qualifies

>>1. A wide-angle lense so that when he walks he can view the lcd screen while

more of a landscape shot

Now here I think he's asking too much. Spare lenses, boom mics, bounce cards
and a ton
of other equipment would be great, but are beyond what the normal citizen
journalist can
schlep around

>>And yeah I learned a few things, one being that not just anyone can be a

Now that's just being an asshole. Get your fucking camera and go out and post
something
first before you start tossing comments like this around

>>Also it seems like he compares himself to Adam Curry's style, so basically he
>>gets no
points for originality

Here he's using what seems to me as a toss off comment on Steve's site to
further slander
him.

Hi all,

I'm experimenting with 3ivx and feeling a bit dumb because the .mov
files I'm creating will not quickstart despite having the quickstart
setting turned on. I'm using 3ivx within Apple Compressor and the
compression seems fine, the only hitch is the quickstart.

Any ideas, or should I dump 3ivx and revert to Apple's scheme?

[videoblogging] Blogs n Dogs in Banff

New Media Institute. See http://www.blogsndogs.com/ and

about the 4 day seminar in December.

How much of the program will be vlogging do you know? From the
'about' and 'topics covered' it is pretty vague if vlogging will be
discussed much at all?

Thanks for your time,

I sort of do this... I use two different urls for the site and the feed.
This allows me to track how people got the file, either through the site
or through the enclosure in the feed. It's not fool-proof, but it's
interesting data. (In my case it's the same file, I just use two
different redirects.)

said, 'which way?' then turned to me and smiled. when i lifted the
frames of him asking 'which way' and sped up the earlier part, the
slight jumpcut before he smiles and the speed change just make it play
all the more manic.

[videoblogging] Re: wich camera?

2005-10-19 Thread Gena
If the video are intended for professional use, i.e. broadcast
television, commericials and similar media then I think a pro-sumer
camera would be a better choice. You can get a very good camera that
is lightweight and has good
performance.

If the videos are going to be only viewed on the web then a good,
non-threating DV camera/camcorder will do the job. I prefer the
smaller camcorders. I don't like announcing "the camcorder is here!" I
like being part of the crowd, not a focal point of it.

What kind of camcorders do you have or intend to buy?

As to Quicktime - it depends on your compression settings. For the
most part it generally looks good to me, I can't tell if it is a Mac
or Windows video. How are you exporting it?

it's the prettiest:

The video was created entirely using 15 second jpg

So clearly, I keep answering my own questions.

The easiest way to convert just about any video over to Google Video
compatible is to use:

VLC media player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

- The basic approach is to open the file to be converted.
- Go into the Streaming settings and set them up for your particular
output type and rates.
- select an output file
- click OK, which then causes the stream to be output
- and viola, your output is ready to go to Google Video.

Of note, when I attempted to upload WMV or MOV files the audio and
video are occassionally out of sync. Converting the files to the
recommended format does away with this issue.

[videoblogging] Aggregator based videoblogging financial model

2005-10-19 Thread Enric
Greg, Andreas, Anders and I were talking today in the Flash Meeting
video conference about a financial model handled by aggregators.

The traditional concept now is that you pay entities like local PBS
stations, cable companies and such a set fee. The current vlog
implementation may be too cumberson to figure out how much to pay each
vlog with a rel="payment" based on what they accept (paypal, credit
card, etc.) That an aggregator could take a subscription amount, like
$12/month, and break that out to videos viewed based on rating of
quality. The aggregator would take a small percentage for itself.

What do those working on aggregators like Joshua Kinberg thing of
this? Feedback, modifications, etc. from others?

[videoblogging] vMix.com WAS Re: New file uploaded to videoblogging

2005-10-19 Thread kostello
Adam,

Thanks for the welcome. Loved your video "Singularity". It really illustrates
the power of
the medium -- in a very short amount of time you can send a message, ask a
question or
provoke a thought.

I'm really glad you liked MP3 -- we hope to create a similar community at vMix.
 The
people involved with vMix.com are artists, musicians and even some industry
folks who
were looking for a new outlet and we thought up vMix. Turns out the space went
absolutely crazy in the last six months when we were revving up. We plan to
bring some of
that "old school" learning to the new medium. :)

Expect new features daily and thanks again for your support. I think the people
on this
board are true pioneers. You are re-inventing how we communicate. Sometimes
it's hard
to explain to the uninitiated how powerful this is but once people experience
it for
themselves you can see the light goes on.

We also have a bulletin board if you have suggestions/rants/critiques of vMix
or you can
send me e-mail directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is the class blog for Temple University Film and Media Arts
Department Multimedia Production Class, Fall 2005. Taught by Jen
Simmons.

She assigned students to watch some Citizen Journalism.

Four of my videos were assigned and the first student has posted his
comment.

In part it says, "And yeah I learned a few things, one being that not
just anyone can be a citizen journalist because a little bit of talent
and creativity is required. Also it seems like he compares himself to
Adam Curry's style, so basically he gets no points for originality."

He hasn't heard of the Michael Verdi technique of commenting I guess.

I'd like to hear your responses to his comment over on the class blog.

That depends on:

  - What you do with the file.
  - What font(s) you are embedding.
  - What kind of licenses you have bought for those fonts.

I'm new on the group but having read the posts for the last few days the community here
seems very active.

I read the PDF -- it's very good, lots of great resources crammed into a short document.

I have some thoughts on promotion that comes from days as head of technology for the
old MP3.com. Before we were acquired by Vivendi-Universal, we had approximately
300,000 artists and over 2,000,000 songs from mostly unsigned artists around the world.
The question I received time and time again was "how do I get people to come to my
pages and listen to my music?". I think the lessons learned from MP3.com are directly
applicable to vlogging. Here were/are my suggestions:

1) You content must be interesting to somebody. The larger the group that the content
appeals to the greater the potential audience. So, make sure that you spend some time
polishing the content. Then ask your friends to review it. The honest friends will tell you
what they like and don't like -- you must decide if you want to revise it or let it be but you
can usually learn something from their feedback.

2) You must promote. That means telling people about what you are doing. The web is too
damn big for someone to discover you there. At MP3.com artists would actually put their
MP3.com address on  their business cards like this www.mp3.com/deathcabforcutie. They
would put their address on their home spun CDs. You can do the same. Put it in your
signature like Taylor Barcroft.;)

3) You must promote yourself continuously. When you post something new, tell your
friends to forward on your URL to anyone they think might be interested. I can definitely
tell on our site who is promoting and who is waiting to be seen and heard. You could tell
by traffic which musicians would mention their URL at every gig. It was a great way to drive
traffic.

4) Promote in target rich environments. If your vlog is about bird watching promote
yourself on bird watching lists not just vlogging lists. WARNING: don't be obnoxious.
There's a line between self promotion where you are obvious about your tactics and spam.
Cross promotion can get you banned.

5) Promote yourself offline. I do camera shoots at all kinds of places. It's a great
opportunity to talk with people about what you are doing. Give them your URL (printed).

I come across this problem when speaking to film/video students pretty much
every time.
They have a hard time conceptualizing on how the whole game (from creation to
distribution) changes with videoblogs-- and how just putting up a short film
they made in
class as a videoblog almost stunts their growth in terms of learning about this
new
medium. The immediacy and interaction from completing a vidpost is much
different than
making a piece in the "old way".

Getting their heads away from the "unprofessional" aspects can be a pain as
well..but most
understand the "citizen" part of Citizen Journalism.

Hi all,

Thanks for introducing me to the wonderful world of video blogging. Gave me a vehicle to share some of my thoughts and insights to music, especially guitar playing to my students and friends. Just thought of extending it to those who are interested in music in the videoblogging community

What's the Michael Verdi technique? lol

As for that guy's comments... I've talked to Jen about this in

[videoblogging] Citizen Journalism - multimedia.05

2005-10-19 Thread Steve Garfield

Thanks,

See this bug:

   Ourmedia.org enclosures don't work

[videoblogging] wich camera?

2005-10-19 Thread miglsd27
I´m helping someone with her blog (presidential pre-cadidate in Portugal),
polish the thing
up with a better template, and add video content. Friday will do a test with
her, and my
question is: take the big TV like camera, porta brace covered screaming here´s
the TV, or a
smaller homevideo like thing? After downsizing the video, I suspect there won´t
be much
difference quality wise. My question is more about the attitude to adopt. Whats
your
suggestion?
One other thing: why is Quicktime content so crappy on Windows machines? I
never seem to
have the prepare for internet streaming thing available. Is .wmv better in
windows machines?
Because I may want to add both contents on her site... what does your
experience tell you?

All the best, Miguel.

hi all,

I am in the process of writing an article/paper about videoblogging, looking at what i call 'imagined audiences'. In order to give my paper some substance, I am looking for videobloggers who are willing to answer 3 to 5 question related to their work and who wouldn't mind me using their answers in my article.

If you're interested in taking part, please email me off list and I'll send you the questions.
