The reporter was so excited to learn about videoblogging he just
signed up for our 5 week class that starts next Thursday. So soon
he'll be a reporter/videoblogger and it won't really be a double-
standard. :-)

[videoblogging] My latest vlog about The Immortality Institute Conference

2005-11-10 Thread Randolfe Wicker

Well, I managed to post Bruce’s opening remarks at the Imminst Conference
on my videoblog http://www.randywickerreporting.blogspot.com/

Earlier, I had posted a description with the same title “Waging War on
Death”.  I have to learn to resort
to Microsoft Word to avoid silly mistakes like saying “nonotechnology” instead
of “nanotechnology”.

This is a Quicktime Movie.
One has to have one of the free versions of Quicktime in their computer
to view this and other vlogs.

I have a lot of material to post.
The problem is that vlogs supposedly are best when they are only a minute
or two long.  Mine run close to five
minutes.  When you click on a cable
PC connection, you will notice that it takes about a full two minutes to
download the video.

I assume that DSL and dial-up is longer.

I don’t understand the discussions about bit-torrent downloads.  I’m not a techie person.  I’m more like an old dog trying to learn
new tricks and master new technologies.

I do believe that videoblogging, called “vlogging”, is going to be the
next media revolution.  It is the
“blogging” of the future.  Images
and video is much more powerful than the written word.

I was handing out day-glo pink slips at the conference in Atlanta which
said the following:

  JOIN THE NEW MEDIA
  REVOLUTION
   Now, you can post your
  videos on the Internet and
become part of our societal archival
  history.
  It is free!
All you need is any kind of video
  camera,
a computer and access to the
  internet.
  Find free videoblogging tutorials
  at:
  http://www.FreeVlog.org
  Twelve hundred vloggers share information
  at:
  videoblogging@yahoogroups.com
You can add vlogs to your blogs like I
  did:
  http://www.randywickerreporting.blogspot.com/

  Randolfe Wicker [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I’m hoping more Immortalists will be joining those of us who are
vlogging.  This simple sharing of
Bruce’s introductory remarks shows the power of our craft.

I’m going to mix some nonsense with the serious stuff.  I’m fond of a few minutes filmed with
Imminst members sitting in a dark bar contemplating a flashing “Fruitrition”
badge.

If you really want to just access Bruce’s remarks in the future without
wading through all the vlogs and written material I’ve posted since this date,
that video without the explanatory matter can be accessed by clicking this link:
http://www.blip.tv/file/4212

In case some viewers would like to know what I posted as written text,
I’ll supply the following:
Wednesday, November 09,
2005

Waging
War on Death! The Immortality Institute's first conference
11/5/05.

The Immortality Institute's stated goal is "to overcome the blight of
involuntary death"( http://www.imminst.org)

On November 5,2005, one-hundred and fifty Immortalists gathered for their
first conference at Georgia Technology Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, to hear
visionaries outline how biotechnology, nanotechnology, cryonics, artificial
intelligence and computer science could enable human beings to become the
masters of their own fates.

Cynics might laugh.  However, the credentials and past
accomplishments of several speakers commanded serious
respect.

The announcement of the first $1,000,000.00 donation toward establishing
a scientific prize for extending longevity in mice was a historical
landmark.

The most prominent speaker, Aubrey de Grey, Ph.D., Research Associate,
University of Cambridge-SENS (Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence)
outlined a detailed plan for curing human aging.

I had the opportunity of spending several hours with Dr. de Grey and two
interviews with him will be interspersed with other highlights videotaped during
this conference.

You can see the profiles of those who spoke by going
to
http://www.imminst.org and looking under "speakers" in their "Conference
Project" area.

The conference's first speaker was Martine Rothblatt, Ph.D., J.D.,
M.B.A., who was responsible for launching several sattlelite communications
companies including Sirius and Worldspace, who spoke on "The Legal Rights of
Conscious Computers".

Like most of those active at The Immortality Institute, I think for
myself.  Personally, I've always been openly skeptical about such subjects
as Artificial Intelligence, The Singularity,  uploading and downloading
ourselves into computers, etc.

However, I found Martine Rothblatt's arguments to be fascinating.
They went to the core of what individual identity is really all
about.

Eliezer Yudowsky, Director, Singularity Intitute For Artificial
Intelligence, gave a presentation which caused me to view all the arguments
about AI in a totally new light.

One thing I have learned in life is that there are many more things I
don't know than those that i do know.

I'll be filing commentary with each posting.

[videoblogging] Re: why does an .mp4 ask to open up QuickTime

2005-11-10 Thread wtrainbow
This is a function of your browser. Usually under preferences (Firefox,
Explorer) you can
select a helper application to handle different file (MIME) types (e.g. I can
set an .mp3 to
open and play in iTunes). The default for .mp4 is the Quicktime player.

[videoblogging] Re: why does an .mp4 ask to open up QuickTime

2005-11-10 Thread t.whid
what is the browser/OS you're using?

I'm not sure regarding mp4, but I wanted m4v files to be handled by quicktime
and had to
add the mime type to my server, otherwise the server would send it with a
default mime
type and you would see the binary data rendered in the browser as text. After I
added the
mime type as video/quicktime the browser handles it as a quicktime (using
whatever the
browser is set up to do with that sort of file). So on my Mac they just render
in the browser
using the qt plugin (except for stupid IE).

This might be what you're seeing?

Actually, I just checked your URL and what happens for me in Safari is I see
the binary data
rendered in the browser. A small example:

"
!"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>[EMAIL
 PROTECTED]
\`XUOYa\[hyWmdR]Ye\\ikit°mJk]s__lco_z?wllakSPo?w`zhr?z|xvjÆ?gpqows|
²mqfxl?iiddqkhn?ßÄ_txj?s{hy"

So yeah, maybe you want to add the mime type as video/mpeg or something? You
can do
it in an .htaccess file if you're using Apache:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/mod/
mod_mime.html#addtype

[videoblogging] Re: New PSP Store from Sony Connect

2005-11-10 Thread Gena
Is this what is passing for good customer relations these days?

Strike One. Everytime I see those "copy protected" Sony Music CDs that
install software on a computer without my permission I wish I had a
baseball bat in my hands to smash each and everyone of the dear things.

Strike Two. They want me to use that infected mange filled mutt of a
browser to come to their web site to purchase copy protected music
that installs crap on my system w/o my permission and/or videos?

Strike Three. Because I have good sense, I choose to use Firefox and
can live without Sony. Apple ain't got a thing to worry about. This is
their competition.

Still have my LP's and proud of it,
Gena http://outonthestoop.blogspot.com

[videoblogging] wal-mart film community screenings

2005-11-10 Thread ryanne hodson
this is really exciting to me
that a film could get such wide distribution
through people who care about it's message.

robert greenwald's (director of outfoxed) 'Wal-Mart, The High Cost of
Low Prices' film
is being screened all over the US in people's living rooms, legion
halls, school auditoriums, union offices etc.

it's happening all next week.
most all of the screenings are free
unless they are some kind of fundraiser

find one in your area:

For a simple way, if you are using Basic HTTP Authentication you can
usually get away with using:

   http://username:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/feed.rss

so that a username/password is contained withing the URL. OF course you
would have to do the same thing with the media file urls:

   http://username:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/movie.mov

Re: [videoblogging] Free video converter to Flash format to test

2005-11-10 Thread Chris Baudry

Hi Frank:

Thanks for testing the online app. Thinking about the pbs...

1. How big are your files? We had at first a 10MB limit, now raised at 20MB.
2. I'll check with Firefox and will tell you.
3. One cause could be a problem during data transfer. The server is in California. I'll check too.

Could you send me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] some of the files you could not convert? They need to be less than 10MB because of Gmail limits. I'll try using the webpage from here to see if it is a communication pb. I swear I'll delete the files afterwards :-)

[videoblogging] Free online video file converter to WMV, AVI and FLV formats

2005-11-10 Thread chrbaudry
Hello:

We just added two new conversion formats: WMV and .AVI . So now you
can choose between .WMV, .AVI and .FLV as output video formats.

It is at: http://vencoder.pacificwhistle.com/

Could you try it and provide us feedback?

As our goal is to have a 100% successful conversion rate, could you
especially tell us which files failed to be converted successfully?

...and send the video file (less than 10MB) at [EMAIL PROTECTED] so
that we can understand what happens and fix the problem.

Yes.

Many of the blog packages have this feature. I use it
on my own video blog all the time. Only about 40% of
what I make is public, and even less of what I write,
and no one notices unless they have an account and get
all of the extra content.

Since there is such a wide variety of blogging
software, and the procedure is different for each
software package I'm sure if you shared the software
you are using to generate the feed some one here would
have had exposure to it and be able to help. If your
using b2Evolution I've got you covered, but I'm not
very familiar with the other packages?

[videoblogging] Re: fussing and fighting

2005-11-10 Thread Bill Streeter
Yeah it's kinda funny that there is all this hub-bub over something,
that as far as I can see, no one has made a dime off of yet, really.
They just smell the cash and they're already at each other's necks.
Or maybe not, it's hard to know if there really is that much
controversy, or if the Wired guy is just blowing something out of
proportion to make a good story.

I think this is the arc of most tech trends. There is the slow
build, then the hype, then the feeding frenzy, then the bubble, and
the crash, and what is left are the survivors who were there all
along and actually have some value to offer someone. Sound familiar?

I don't fault Apple for looking at the business opportunities in
this. They're a for-profit business and that's what they do. Asking
them to not look for business opportunities is like asking a dog not
to like meat. Isn't it curious that Microsoft has been absent from
this arena? Whats up with that? Have they just decided to not
compete in this space? Are they biding their time? Can they even
compete?

Anyway as the saying goes, money changes everything. And in the case
of podcasting just the mere whiff of cash is enough. There will be a
shake out eventually. I don't think the world can sustain too many
armature "radio shows" that talk about, "my life, my favorite TV
show, my favorite movies, and my dog." The people who are doing this
who think that they're going to be the next Howard Stern will drop
out soon enough. The ones that will stick around will be those that
are doing it because they are truly originals. Or have some other
compelling reason to do it besides the chance of getting famous or
rich.

Will this happen to video blogging? Probably, at some point it will.
If it does there won't be much to stop it. And who knows? By the
time it happens there will be some of us who might be begging it to
happen if only to speed the inevitable crash to eliminate those that
are in it for all the wrong reasons.

Or maybe not.

well, i think we just need to be aware of it.
i think many of us are trying to lay down the foundation for a larger
view of videoblogging.
but i guess its like Andreas has told me...just look at text blogging
for our evolution.

this is why i always remind new people:
you can make a show that you want thousands of people to download and watch.
but you can also just make a videoblog for yourself/friends/family.
no business model needed.

its been good that money has not flowed into videoblogging yet...
its giving us time to grow naturally.

but in Podcasting is there really any money?
other than Podshow guysis anyone really making money?
sometimes "pod"casting just seems something that Apple hypes to push
its products.
its just another venue for Disney to push its programming.

I'd like to see some more controversy. For example: We all know V is bossy
on camera, but I'd like to know how he is off-camera. I think Jojo is the
real instigator of that relationship. But without mudthrowing in Wired
we'll never know!

In related news: Adam Curry has a quote-unquote spokesperson. Wtf?

Ugh. This inevitably happens, unfortunately, once people start to pour
in past the early adopters. They come in on the buzz, hype and tech, and
ignore the principles that the community has been founded and flourished
upon the core "cool" stuff. The worst part is, I don't have a good
suggestion/answer as to how to avert it, but something that definately
warrants further discussion.

[videoblogging] Re: Compression techniques - file size ratios

2005-11-10 Thread Bill Streeter
I'm not jumping on the h.264 bandwagon just yet. Yes QT7 is
available for Windows users but that's just a small part of the
equation. First I know Windows users that have had QT and had issues
with it and removed it. I dunno what these issues were or how they
came about, but those are some of the reports I'm getting. Second,
h.264 takes a lot of processing power to decode. So a person using a
slightly older slower computer won't be able to play it back. I've
tested this myself and it's a real issue.

And yes 3vix is MP4 and more importantly iPod compatible. I've seen
my movies encoded with 3vix played back on iPods so I'm pretty
confident that anything that will play MP4s will play a movie
encoded with 3vix.

[videoblogging] Re: Compression techniques - file size ratios

2005-11-10 Thread wazman_au
I think there's little point in holding out against QT7 and H.264.
If people are prompted to install it to watch a vid, most people
WILL install it. And it's out for both Mac and Windows.

The advantages of H.264 in quality and compression are pretty
compelling. I've posted compression settings elsewhere on this list
that achieve about 1.5-2MB/minute in H.264 and the result is a very
watchable video ... superior to anything I could achieve with the
still-admirable 3ivx. Contact me off-list if you want my settings.

So far I've only had one person complain about not being able to
watch because he/she can't install QT7.

Another thing I've been wondering ... is 3ivx _really_ a unique
codec, or is it just a plugin that gives access to MPEG4 settings
that QT and other programs normally don't let you tweak? The reason
I ask is that a viewer doesn't have to install a 3ivx codec to watch
it.

I'm not sure about your compression figuers, but QT7 is now available
for Windows.  Also vlc (http://www.videolan.org) has experimental
support for H.264 although I guess that's not really ready for prime
time by definition.

My final version was compressed using 3ivx - dual pass.  I had orginally had the size down to
