[videoblogging] Re: Rocketboom camcorder? HC1

2006-02-10 Thread Chuck Olsen

Well, it's sexy, it's small, and it captures great detailed images
if you have enough light. Really dazzling in daylight.

It fits in my winter coat pocket. For what I do (you know, umm... vlogging
and documentary-ish stuff) having a high-def yet fairly inconspicuous
and highly portable camera is ideal.

Downsides:
- Not so hot in low light
- Bottom-loading tapes (hasn't been much of a problem for me)
- proprietary Sony hot shoe makes external mics a problem

I bought a little Sony "shotgun" made for this custom hotshoe but it sucks.
The built-in stereo mic works better. But there's no good way to mount
a real shotgun mic, for example. People have rigged stuff up, and surely
someone will make a hotshoe adaptor, but right now it's an issue.

Overall: I love it!

cheers,
chuck

Hey Leslie -

I use this camera. I have been happy with it: good quality recording,
decent
sounds, nice size/weight. Good sized color LCD and direct DV outs too.
One
word of caution, check the drive door for loading and unloading, they
can
get finicky sometimes and seem to be on the fragile side.

Good luck!

[videoblogging] Re: Introverts and Extroverts

2006-02-10 Thread Edmund Yeo
Well, it really depends. Usually, I'm fine with being with a large
group of people who don't actually bore me. And once being with people
like that, I can feel pretty energized and ah, recharged.

But people who bore me will make me end up feeling empty, and I would
probably just walk off after feeling rather uncomfortable.

Er, although I do have to say that I do get bored rather easily. There
are times when I would think of something like "bah, why the hell am I
wasting my time with them when I can just stay home and do something
more productive"

Maybe that's just my massive ego speaking. Hmm. I guess I'm just kinda
mercurial.

[videoblogging] Re: Introverts and Extroverts

2006-02-10 Thread Carl Weaver
I'd have to say I am in between, probably slightly leaning toward introvert.
I get recharged from being on my own but also enjoy the company of others.
In large groups where I don't know many people, I tend to feel a little
anxious. On the other hand, I am a professional entertainer (a teacher), so
I get my fill of groups of people all day long and sometimes catch myself
expecting other people to be as menacing and dreary as my students are. So I
think my introversion is more a factor of my demoralizing job than anything
else.

But like Steve G., I am a work in progress and way to young to label this
way.

Cheers,
Carl

Just read about an upcoming new service that may be of interest,
called 3Bubbles.

Personally who knows if this particular service will be a winner, but
what do people think of the concept? The advertising side of things is
an added twist, Im more excited about the chat than the advert part of
the model, but anyway...

extract...

'They have created a very easy to integrate Ajax based chat interface
that can be added to every blog post automatically. By simply adding a
code snippet into the blog template, a link will be included in every
post (think comments, trackbacks, and now chat) to open a chat window
where readers can debate and discuss the post.'

The problem is that I actually do a lot of research, get funding, and teach, as much as I would like to spend all my time video blogging. The Missouri legislature and new administration is very conservative these days and they are cutting higher ed right and left (who needs colleges), and I could just see one of these legislators seeing one of the professors running around in silly videos with his near fifty year beer gut hanging out. He could say, well this is what our tax money is going to, and, well ... I could see not being very popular. Honestly, I rarely even mention the richard show around school, though I have a link on my UMR web site. I don't think many of my students even know I do that. Although I will admit they probably wouldn't be too surprised - I don't exactly have a reputation of being overly serious or mature.
UMR calls itself "Missouri's Technological Research University" and our publicty department really is trying to do some different things with techology, and is much more in-tune with the modern world than the Missouri legislature (they knew about Rocketboom). So they tried a different angle and started a blog about UMR's research and they said they could write about me on there and they promised to make an effort to note that I did actually do real professor stuff. So, they wrote something and I said ok. I have no idea if anyone, even at UMR will read the UMR research blog, but, the story is here

INTP - I would prefer living in a library or with books but I can be
social or appear extraverted for a limited time period. Don't mind
preping or giving a speech but I want to run for the hills after (I
don't but I feel that way sometimes.)

I think because vlogging can allow those who are introverted to do
what they do in private, it is a great medium for all persuasions.

As for my vlogging style, I really don't want to be the focus. I want
to record what I encounter and document the dissappearing world I once
knew. Maybe in the future, when I'm ready and have something
worthwhile to say.

Re: [videoblogging] Sony DCR-HC20?

2006-02-10 Thread Ted Tagami

Hey Leslie -

I use this camera. I have been happy with it: good quality recording,
decent sounds, nice size/weight. Good sized color LCD and direct DV
outs too. One word of caution, check the drive door for loading and
unloading, they can get finicky sometimes and seem to be on the fragile
side.

Good luck!

[videoblogging] Re: FS Like New Dual 2.5 GHz G5

2006-02-10 Thread Steve Watkins
Im not the police because Ive got no power, in the past people I have
had a go at have mistaken my loud-mouthed opinionating with official
policing of this forum. It isnt, its just me being an opinionated ass.

Ive had a mixed history with you Taylor, I have criticised you before
but have also criticised others whove attacked or ridiculed you in
ways that I didnt agree with (me and my opinions again).

Shout the word favour all you like, a fair sale of goods should be
mutually beneficial, you have as much to gain from the sale as the
purchaser. I probably could of kept my gob shut if you hadnt used the
usual 'saintly motives' thing as your main defense.

Anyway I am sorry, I failed to keep myself in check again, sorry everyone.

[videoblogging] Re: AT&T stakes claim on essential parts of MPEG-4

2006-02-10 Thread Steve Watkins
Thats really really good news, I am hugely impressed with the way that
DivX has gone from having a large number of reasons why it wasnt too
suitable for videoblogging,to nearly none, in the space of what, 6 months?

I havent had time to watch the DivX videoblogs that you guys have done
lately, but that was also a nice development.

DivX 720P stuff is a happy match with the TV I got for Christmas too.

Please keep us informed on the licensing & browser plugin release status.

Thanks again

[videoblogging] member intro

2006-02-10 Thread Brad Hood
Hi, I'm Brad in Alaska, lurker of a few months.
I can get broadband soon, and I've gotten started using a Sanyo Xacti
C-6 a few weeks ago. I prefer to not own a car, and so the little
Xacti fits my lifestyle.

Anyone using a PVR unit in the field? I'm looking for a hard drive
equiped, SD card or USB camera-accepting PVR (portable video
recorder), for data dumping, sharing video, and for capturing external
A/V sources, like a modular camcorder. The Neuros 442 apears attractive.

I've been getting familiar with an XP beast over this past year,
coming from a classic power mac 7100/66 for internet and minor
efforts. Before that, I made animations and presentations on my Amiga
2000. I loved it! I collaborated on a public access cablecast show,
made on VHS equipment.

Any other Amiga artists on this vlogging list? I'm starting work
getting familiar with Cloanta's Amiga Forever pack
http://amigaforever.com/ so I can integrate my familiar classic Amiga
programs for animation and graphics with modern XP video functionality.

Brad

Apologies in advance as I think Ive just read a differnt meaning from
your post, they didnt decide to buy it and contact you till the 2nd
time you pimped it here.

I feel the need to add value to this post considering Ive now put more
traffic ontot he list over this than the original advert itself. Oops.
Umm, what value can I add? Gloomy stuff knowing me. If you intend to
do any advanced preparation before possible bird flu pandemic strikes,
now is a good time to start.

people who dont want this list further filled with that sort of traffic.

[videoblogging] Re: AT&T stakes claim on essential parts of MPEG-4

2006-02-10 Thread Steve Watkins
Oh dear, what is the point in MPEG-LA, who call themselves "world
leader in one-stop technology platform patent licensing" if it turns
out that a holder of an essential patent isnt a member?

The devil is in the detail which I dont have. If AT&Ts patent does not
cover essential technology used in all forms of mpeg4, then only
certain implementations of mpeg4 by companies in hardware or software
will be affected. If the technology is not essential, companies could
remove it rather than pay up, if the loss of functionality isnt crippling.

If it is essential technology that mpeg4 will not function without,
then companies will either have to contest AT&T's claims, pay up, or
stop using mpeg4.

Theoretically, and depending what the technology is, this could also
affect licensing arrangements for people who distribute videos in
mpeg4 format. At the moment most videobloggers dont think about this
issue, and luckily MPEG-LA license scheme for mpeg4 means people dont
have to (because content under a certain length/number of viewers/pay
or not doesnt need an additional license). But if AT&T's patent covers
technology thats in the actual resulting mpeg4 files themselves, not
just the software & hardware to play & make mpeg4, then this could
have ramifications. The stuff I am waffling about in this paragraph is
the same sort of issue that makes DivX need to have a licensing
agreement for people who distribute divx files on the net. The AT&T
complication pushes back my hopes regarding timescale when DivX may
improve their license to be more videoblog firends, but this is just
speculation.

I am not a lawyer, the above conclusions are as near as I can
personally get without being one or having more information.

You have a right to be proud of a certain piece and want to share it.  That's much different
than saying that EVERY post you make is listworthy.

This is a fun Friday idea.

Here's a video from 2004, when I was filing daily reports from the
Democratic Convention in Boston.

This one features Amy Carpenter:

http://vspan.blogspot.com/2004/08/statue-of-liberty-gang.html

Enjoy!

It's over on my little test blog.

While I'm at it, here's a list of my eight reports from the DNC. It
was a lot of fun going out each day to get a stories that weren't
covered by big media:

[videoblogging] Share Your Favorite Vlog! (was:Re: Spam and such...)

2006-02-10 Thread Rob Reedy
Only cause you asked for it schlomo... but I have to put it into the
right context... for it is NOT included in my blip.tv or blogger.com
blogs...

This is a VBlog that was derived from a video "audition" I did
for "Deal or No Deal" on NBC... I was going through a particularly
rough time after Katrina and Rita... and the VBlog was my equivilant
of standing by the onramp of our information superhighway with a
sign "Will work for food"... I never got any responses for it... but
then I never made it easy to find... it was "out there", but not
indexed or referenced in any way... it WAS my first actual VBlog.

Things are still very rough for us... but I have faith that in time,
things will improve... but till then... I need to keep on pluggin
away...

so now go have a look at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?
docid=7156411968805758520&q=rob+reedy

excellent article, Richard!  I know what you mean about being concerned how some might take the vlog.  I don't hide the fact that I'm THE David Meade of DavidMeade.com, but I do have a pretty fast rule about trying to not blog/vlog/etc about work/professional-life.  (Which is challenging when it consumes so much time the site has to take a back seat .. like the last month or so.)
Anyhow ... good read, thanks for the link.On 2/10/06, Richard Show <[EMAIL PROTECTED]

At the end of last semester the publicity department at my university (Universtiy of Missouri - Rolla) contacted me because they keep up with Rocketboom, believe it or not, and saw my video blog. They wanted to do a press release on this. Though I am not opposed to attention at all, I thought about it, and eventually said no.
I have no idea if anyone, even at UMR will read the UMR research blog, but, the story is here
http://blog.umr.edu/visions/2006/02/the_richard_show_goes_boom.html
... and I thought it was kind of cool and I was happy with the job they did. As I said, I am not opposed to attention. After all, we are all narcists and it is my show.

You have a right to be proud of a certain piece and want to share it. That's
much different
than saying that EVERY post you make is listworthy.

It's friday! How about everyone share one of their vlogs that they really
love! Maybe
something deep in your archives that many may not have shown!

Here's mine:

I like it because it was one of the first interactions I did through video, as

I wanted people from this list to see the piece, as I was proud of it. It was a project instead of a simple vlog entry. I guess I am not allowed to do that because it is spamming.
I might be out of line her; misunderstanding something, or maybe I didn't read the rules, but isn't that a problem? Aren't we on here to talk about vlogging? To share our stuff with eachother, not just the technical mumbo-jumbo, or philosophical concepts, but the stuff that we do.
There are 5345 vlogs listed in mefeedia these days. How do we get people to see things that we feel are good pieces if we are not community celebrities? This list alone occupies a good deal of time for all of us daily. Most of it is stuff that I am not really interested in. Is that spam? How can I keep in touch with this list and get to see new faces and ideas in the vlogging world. Somebody has to tell me, as I am very busy with my own stuff, as I am sure all of you are as well.
My point is that if we cannot send an email to this list asking for others that are doing the same things as we are, only totally different, to check it out and comment on it, what good is this list?
I have posted about 30 videos, I think I have asked the list to check out this one, that's it. Why? Because I thought it was pretty good. It was edited from 5 hours of video, the project is 40 gb. There are several really nice shots, from a cinematographic standpoint. I really wanted to get some feedback from it.
As I said before, I might be out of line here, totally missing the point about spamming. If that note that I sent asking people to check out a piece of mine that I worked hard on, and thought was good, was spam, then I think that is a problem with this list.

LOL too funny - particularly since I'm partially supporting myself
through speeches at the moment. :)

And it sounds like we're discovering a pattern here with this
extrovert-introvert-extrovert thing depending on the audience.

one question - I wonder how many vloggers would consider themselves
introverted in front of a camera? Again, it's a mixed bag for me - I'm
not big on having stills taken of me, but I have no problem with
yakking it up on video. Maybe it's a weight thing.

Ron, I don't know if the group policy changed recently, but posting when you've done a particularly important vlog entry has not traditionally been a problem. Posting for EVERY vlog entry usually indicates that one's view of "important" is inflated, but you don't do that.

Somebody has to tell me, as I am very busy with my own stuff, as I am sure all of you are as well. My point is that if we cannot send an email to this list asking for others that are doing the same things as we are, only totally different, to check it out and comment on it, what good is this list?I have posted about 30 videos, I think I have asked the list to check out this one, that's it. On Feb 10, 2006, at 12:59 PM, Rachel Knight wrote: Introvert, although I can deal with people in a work situation, but social situations leave me fatigued and scared.  Too many people, human beings scare me, lol.  Give me cats any day.  Yes, I have noticed the tendency towards insanity in vloggers.    I'm glad you are doing this research, it is the kind of thing I would like to do, I would like to know the results when you get them, along with statistical significance etc.  If it works, I might try a bit of at home research I have always wanted to do and see if I can find anything significant in that.  Rachel (Alternative Kitten)On 10 Feb 2006, at 16:09, Stephanie Bryant wrote: I'm curious: How many of you are introverts, and how many are extroverts? Re: [videoblogging] Introverts and Extroverts

2006-02-10 Thread Ron Watson

Bernie O, at HPU explained introvert and extroverts like this:Introverts are very comfortable working inside their own bubble. It takes very little energy to work in your own bubble, but as people start to come into your bubble, it gets harder and more energy must be spent to do work as people get involved in your bubble. An extrovert is very comfortable working outside of their bubbles, we are comfortable working in other people's bubbles. If we are able to work outside of our solo bubble, work is easy, very little energy being expended, but when we have to work alone, all inside our bubble, it is harder and requires more energy. It is very important to note that these tendencies are not exclusive. An introvert can function as an extrovert, and vice versa, but it is harder to do and requires more energy. That's what I remember about introvert and extrovert. I also vividly remember the Intuitive v Sensing breakdown. Intuitive people are big picture people; generalists. They like to be given the big picture and work from there. When given a task, the Intuitive person would rather have a defined goal and then be left alone, and the Sensing person wants to have a step by step progression. Sensing people are detail oriented. The Intuitive Person is the guy who walks into a room, puts his keys down and immediately loses them; attention to detail is the Sensing person's realm. The details tend to get in the way of the Intuitive person.Again this is about expending energy vs comfort. Intuitives expend very little energy in attacking the big picture, but can be overdrained and overwhelmed by the steps and process that makes the Sensing person comfortable.  I am a highly intuitive person. It is both a blessing and a curse. I did real well in math until calculus, because I could not follow the progressions. Even in Algebra, Geometry and Trig, I was using the big picture to solve my problems: working backwards from multiple choice tests, and had huge problems when I actually had to follow  steps to the letter. Calc was a waste of time. Chemistry; I can still remember lots of stuff, theories, equations, properties of elements, I can still set up most of the heavy equations, but I have the hardest time computing them...I wish that more people would look to tests such as the Meyer's-Briggs. I have found it immensely helpful in my roles of coach and instructor. It really helps to have things explained in the manner in which you are comfortable. Intuitive vs Sensing, I believe are the 2 most important in terms of education and educating. Nothing is worse than feeling as if you are drowning in a sea of information, or that you are being tied down by all the details. Of course the other groupings are important, but I have gotten the most use out of the I vs S category. The two people I have run seminars with have the same basic knowledge that I have, but they are highly Sensing and I am highly Intuitive. This works great because we can give people the same information in a manner that will be well received and easy to process. RonOn Feb 10, 2006, at 12:18 PM, Ted Tagami wrote: Where do PERverts fit on the scale? ;) Seriously, depends on the day/place/people for me. [videoblogging] Re: AT&T stakes claim on essential parts of MPEG-4

2006-02-10 Thread Susan
Holy crap. You have no idea how important this is to **me** in
particular.

First of all, thank you for posting this.

Sonic is the company that just in the past year or two bought Roxio,
which everyone in this forum knows is what I swear by for my movie
creation.

This is some pretty wild news. It's kind of comical that I haven't
been keeping up in the forums lately--and I stumble upon this.

And you know? The Roxio guys in the forums there have been avoiding
my questions like the plague. This all makes sense now.

Just for reference--
http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?act=ST&f=14&t=235
I was asking why Roxio 7 had mp4 support, and suddenly it was yanked
from Roxio 8. Now I know.

[videoblogging] Re: Introverts and Extroverts

2006-02-10 Thread Andy Carvin
I've taken the test several times, and I vacillate between ENTJ and
INTJ. The way one of my friends once described me was extroverted in
small groups, introverted at parties, extroverted on stage.

Guess that makes me a bit of an ambivert.

i think the post was relevant to this group.

i think schlomo's point is that once was enough.

i too would like to know when members have equipment for sale, but i
don't need to be reminded until it sells.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: FS Like New Dual 2.5 GHz G5

2006-02-10 Thread Kunga
Well I'm not opening the new box until I have the CASH in my hand and
the Dual 2.5 is passed on to the lucky local here in the Bay Area.
But thank you for the words of support.

FYI - I would WANT to know if any member of this list has anything
video production related FOR SALE including cameras, computers,
lights, tripods etc. For the owners of this list to think this type
of post is not appropriate, I find both offensive and blindsighted.

Please email me directly if you have anything for sale like that if
we can't do it on list. Could we take a vote how many would NOT WANT
for sale items from fellow list member posted here? I bet almost all
members would welcome such posts.

I didn't find it offensive, good call, I say and to be honest if I was getting rid of any of my film making equipment I would ask the group first or even give them first refusal.  The only reason I didn't buy it was you live in California and I live in the UK, which brings up 3 problems, 1. power differences, 2. the postage and 3. I couldn't afford it at the time.  Glad you have sold it though, now you can open your new box.PaulOn 10 Feb 2006, at 19:08, Kunga wrote: None. Posted once earlier in the week. Anyway it is SOLD. Remember the Golden Rule (excerpt from "Chapter 1: Lobsters",
http://tinyurl.com/7hy6o ):

==
The lobsters are not the sleek, strongly superhuman intelligences of
pre singularity mythology: They're a dim-witted collective of huddling
crustaceans. Before their discarnation, before they were uploaded one
neuron at a time and injected into cyberspace, they swallowed their
food whole, then chewed it in a chitin-lined stomach. This is lousy
preparation for dealing with a world full of future-shocked talking
anthropoids, a world where you are perpetually assailed by
self-modifying spamlets that infiltrate past your firewall and emit a
blizzard of cat-food animations starring various alluringly edible
small animals. It's confusing enough to the cats the ads are aimed at,
never mind a crusty that's unclear on the idea of dry land.(Although
the concept of a can opener is intuitively obvious to an uploaded
Panulirus.)

"Can you help us?" ask the lobsters.

"Let me think about it," says Manfred. He closes the dialogue window,
opens his eyes again, and shakes his head. Someday he, too, is going
to be a lobster, swimming around and waving his pincers in a
cyberspace so confusingly elaborate that his uploaded identity is
cryptozoic: a living fossil from the depths of geological time, when
mass was dumb and space was unstructured. He has to help them, he
realizes – the Golden Rule demands it, and as a player in the agalmic
economy, he thrives or fails by the Golden Rule.
