[videoblogging] Re: Video mashup mania

2006-03-28 Thread JD Lasica
Steve of Elbows asked:

With that in mind I have a question about this mashup stuff. Is there
any particular partnering organisation that was the primary driving
force for this mashup stuff, does one of them have such things as one
of its core aims? I dont know if Im wording the question right, I
guess I am interested in whether this is something that will be
expanded upon in future, and whether its in the form of a new
website/service/social network thing, or as part of an existing thing
like ourmedia? Because I want to know who the right people and groups
are to talk to about this in future.

Well, yes. Outhink, which sponsored this mashup event, is intent on
creating a rich and deep mashup marketplace and remix center for both
licensed and unlicensed works: video, music, audio, etc.

Ourmedia will be helping with the effort. I'm very excited about the
possibilities here.

I know sull has previously said he's jazzed by the idea, and now Steve
of E. has expressed an interest in this emergent phenomenon. If
there's anyone else who wants to get involved with the mashup
movement, give me a holler. It will take some time, but I think it'll
happen by fall or thereabouts.

Who is they who have the patents, technology, and so on? It doesn't lend credence to your claim that I can't find any about us links on either of the sites or any mention of the technology you claim to be using.

Loiez,

I've had the HC1 for about five months now and have been very happy with
it. The battery life is great, the lense amazing, and the sound always
surprisingly good as well. Shooting in native 1080i is very fun, though
still mostly an experiment for me, as I end up outputing everything for
the web anyhow. The camera itself is medium in size, not good for
carrying around day-to-day, but still pretty small - i took it on a
five-day backpacking trip.

iMovie HD 6 worked somewhat well but was *very* slow on my Powerbook G4.
I am sure it will be better on a Dual Core.
I eventually upgraded to Final Cut Express as it handles HD better on a
G4. I also often still use the camera in DV mode - you can both shoot or
just output via DV for editing, keeping the HDV for archive.

Here's a few sample videoblogs shot with the HC1 (these are all
compressed and sized for the 'net):

[videoblogging] Upgrading to HDV

2006-03-28 Thread Kunga
Hi Nate,
That rock sculpture building with MC looks amazing. What is your
compression methodology? Can you walk us through your compression
path please?

On the talk with Jon I see you are using copyrighted Neil Young music
to mess up the longevity due to copyright violation. Also didn't
eleminate the top and bottom black bands - IE didn't CROP unnecessary
bandwidth off top and bottom, thus making the posted file bigger than
it needed to be. While the rock building at 640 x 360 will load on
the Video iPod, the car talk @ 720 x 480 will not. Why didn't you
crop it to the iPod max of 640 x 360 so it would? Was that before you
knew about iPod compatible maximum dimensions? It's also too dark due
to light from rear window fooling it to close down the iris more than
would have been preferable. Is there no backlight switch or was there
no way to manually open up the iris further or manually increase the
gain?

The above two great overall though. At 6MB a minute it's very a
impressive compression scheme.

But what happened with the racing piece? It is often times way out of
focus and the compression looks way inferior. While you got it back
to the Video iPod compatible 480 x 271, it is fairly funky looking
compared to the other two. Is that because the HC-1 fails when it
comes to action? Or is that a worse-higher compression scheme before
you got better at it with the other two later? I see it's only 3MB a
minute and a much smaller 480 x 271. How did you come to that
dimension in the compression-crop step?

Are you using Handbrake or what? Would you mind critiquing each of
these videos and how you got them to the web condition from the HDV
recordings? Thanks.

Thanks for being an HDV HC-1 pioneer Nate. Your work is very important.

I'm posting this on the HDV Yahoo list as well.

expanded upon in future, and whether its in the form of a new
website/service/social network thing, or as part of an existing thing
like ourmedia? Because I want to know who the right people and groups
are to talk to about this in future.

Well, yes. Outhink, which sponsored this mashup event, is intent on
creating a rich and deep mashup marketplace and remix center for both
licensed and unlicensed works: video, music, audio, etc.

Ourmedia will be helping with the effort. I'm very excited about the
 possibilities here.

I know sull has previously said he's jazzed by the idea, and now Steve

there's anyone else who wants to get involved with the mashup

 happen by fall or thereabouts.

Re: [videoblogging] Upgrading to HDV

2006-03-28 Thread Nathan Freitas
Thanks for appreciating the work, though I'll just put one big caveat
out now - I'm more a software developer
than a videographer, though I am trying to improve on the latter. I
bought the HC-1 because I could
justify it as a business expense, and I am also working on an archival
family interview project, and wanted to
have the highest resolution format I could afford.

Kunga wrote:
That rock sculpture building with MC looks amazing. What is your
compression methodology? Can you walk us through your compression
 path please?

In general, I'm of the Verdi/3IVX school, using dual pass whenever
possible. I also am pretty aggressive on
audio compression, using some MPEG-4 variant, often in mono, or at least
down at below 64kbps. I will
try to document what I did on each of this, and send it out.
On the talk with Jon I see you are using copyrighted Neil Young music
to mess up the longevity due to copyright violation.
Yeah, it was kind of meant as a joke - that was playing on the car
radio, and since we were discussing
DRM we figured we'd see what happened if we left it in. I think Neil
would be okay with it, though we
expect an RIAA notice at any moment.

All of the other music is composed by me, either using GarageBand
tracks, or through tools such as Cubase.
Also didn't eleminate the top and bottom black bands - IE didn't CROP
 unnecessary
bandwidth off top and bottom, thus making the posted file bigger than
 it needed to be.
The car talk was shot in HDV but captured in FCE as DV. The rock
building was captured and edited as HDV using
iMovie 6 HD.

If I crop the black off the DV video, what should the resulting
resolution be for iPod compatibility?
While the rock building at 640 x 360 will load on
the Video iPod, the car talk @ 720 x 480 will not. Why didn't you
crop it to the iPod max of 640 x 360 so it would? Was that before you
knew about iPod compatible maximum dimensions?
I honestly haven't gotten my head around iPod compatibility yet. Early
on I was a big fan of the Export to iPod
feature of iMovie, but then it seemed like no one could watch them in
their browser. Now, I'm back to using 3IVX
and a bunch of manual settings. It's really all a big pain to be
truthful. I think I need a faster computer.

Is there no backlight switch or was there
no way to manually open up the iris further or manually increase the
 gain?

There are both features on the HC-1, but I didn't spend enough time
considering that during our filming. I have used
it with success in other environments though. I will say though that the
*one big issue* of the HC1
is image graininess when shooting in the dark. I think all the reviews
out there will comment on this.
It's not a deal-breaker, but if you are planning on shooting lots of
concerts, clubshots, late-night work, it's
probably not the best camera, even with Sony's green night vision mode
(which you can use with a blackwhite
filter to great effect)
The above two great overall though. At 6MB a minute it's very a
 impressive compression scheme.

I think both compressed well thanks to the relative stillness of the
camera, especially with the rock building.
As I said, I will try to document exactly what i've done and share it
here at some point.

But what happened with the racing piece? It is often times way out of
focus and the compression looks way inferior.
Yeah, it was done in iMovie. The first film I think I edited using
footage from the HC-1, so I made plenty of mistakes.
I'm not as methodical as I should be either.
Is that because the HC-1 fails when it
comes to action? Or is that a worse-higher compression scheme before
you got better at it with the other two later?
I think its the latter. The HC-1 has been good on action (I'll post some
action video when I can).
I have been learning how to use manual focus and zoom, so again, it was
probably my fault
when it came to the focus. Plus, I was also out of breath from driving
the cars (it's alot more
exhausting than it looks).
 I see it's only 3MB a
minute and a much smaller 480 x 271. How did you come to that
 dimension in the compression-crop step?

It must of been some iMovie HD voodoo. I'll try to figure it out.
Are you using Handbrake or what? Would you mind critiquing each of
these videos and how you got them to the web condition from the HDV
 recordings? Thanks.

Well, I provided what I could off the top of my head. I'm basically just
using Final Cut Express HD
these days, and am trying to get a solid process down.
Thanks for being an HDV HC-1 pioneer Nate. Your work is very important.
I'm posting this on the HDV Yahoo list as well.

A hapless pioneer at best!

br / (with the space) is the backwards compatible way of writing an
xhtml line break. Older browser will choke on br/ because they see it as
an br/ element (which obviously don't exist). Both are equally valid,
but br / works in more situations.

Conclusion: Write linebreaks with a space - br /

[videoblogging] Re: Video mashup mania

2006-03-28 Thread david_dudas
Hi Devlon,

This is David Dudas from eyespot.

There *IS* a way to get an embedded player. Every one of the videos in
your eyespot account has a publish link underneath it. Just click it
and you will find the html code to paste on your external blog.

About the fades and transitions...we have these built but not released
yet. We roll out new features every week...these are in the queue. :)

Oh it will scale. It's built to scale in a big way.

The team that built eyespot (myself included) also built the content
delivery infrastructure for mp3.com, where we used to stream 11
terabytes of data per day.

We're prepared for a lot of traffic. :)

I wonder how well it will scale once it catches on. I can imagine it

Hi Devlon,

This is David Dudas from eyespot.

There *IS* a way to get an embedded player. Every one of the videos in
your eyespot account has a publish link underneath it. Just click it
and you will find the html code to paste on your external blog.Hi David, thanks for the reply.Ah, yes I see it now. Cool. Thanks!

About the fades and transitions...we have these built but not released
yet. We roll out new features every week...these are in the queue. :)

ddGreat, can't wait to see these new features.btw, I'll update the TestingGrounds review for EyeSpot on the embed thing and we'd love it if you could pop in an leave a comment when you've get these new features released :)

It's a slick service indeed. Too bad there is no way to get an
embeded player so I can post on my own blog...it's restricted to their
site. I can email it to a friend, or send it to their cell phone.

Some fades/transitions would be sweet, but :) that's a little 'pie
in the sky'
