[videoblogging] new vlog - sbforum

2006-04-11 Thread Markus Sandy
Hi all,

Today was a great follow-up to videobloggingweek...

Jay, Ryanne, JD, Josh Paul, Chris Ritke and I spent the day at UC Santa
Barbara, vlogging the 2006 Santa Barbara Forum on Digital Transitions:
Social Collaboration and Dynamic Communities, the first in a series of
annual meetings exploring cutting-edge trends and long-term social
transformations resulting from people’s use of information technologies.
Participants included danah boyd, Doc and Jan Searles, Mena Trott, Clay
Shirkey, Howard Reingold, Dave Toole, Mary Hodder, John Sealy Brown, JD
and many others.

As part of a demonstration of videoblogging and personal media, we shot
about two dozen interviews with the participants and posted several by
the end of the day for them to see (plus a highlight reel). More videos
are coming soon, hopefully to be followed by contributions from the
participants as they attempt to keep the forum alive throughout the
year and into next year's event.

We also captured Howard's keynote speech and lots of other interesting
moments that we hope to post in the next two days.

[videoblogging] who's using what format?

2006-04-11 Thread Deirdre Straughan
We've had lots of discussion in here about what video format is best
to use for videoblogging.

Do we have any real statistics about what people actually ARE using?
Anyone know of a reliable way to figure this out?

Re: [videoblogging] who's using what format?

2006-04-11 Thread Michael Verdi

In general, I'd have to say it's overwhelmingly Quicktime mpeg4 of some kind. I have 78 feeds in FireAnt and 74 of them are QuickTime. It used to be 73 and then Carl Weaver started using QuickTime. I didn't specifically look for QuickTime only - though if people provide a choice (like 3D Roger) I subscribe to the QuickTime feed. I think one or two are Flash.
Also since most of those quicktime videos will play on my iPod, I suspect that most are not h.264 (because that would mean they were using the export to iPod which is likely to squish thier videos - which I haven't really noticed.)
That's not scientific, of course. Just my observation.-VerdiOn 4/11/06, Deirdre Straughan

I

That would be great. It needs to be set up so that any one voter can choose multiple formats - for example, I post my videos in SWF, FLV, M4V, and sometimes WMV and DivX.On 4/11/06,

[videoblogging] Great Videoblogger Documentation '06

2006-04-11 Thread Andreas Haugstrup
As some of you might know I'm so young that I'm still hanging out in
school. My final project at grad. school is about videobloggers and people
who watch videoblogs, and you can help me.

I have created a survey that I hope you will fill out. It shouldn't take
you more than 15 minutes and it doesn't hurt. The results will be made
public, except for any personal information (videoblogging is about
sharing, so research about videoblogs should be about sharing too). The
survey deals with your viewing and production habits.

The survey and a tiny bit more information is at http://www.remediate.org/

them. I hope that many of you will blog about the Great Videoblogger

Many publishers will continue to keep in mind the popularity of the video iPod.This results in mostly Quicktime compatible media being the choice and preference which is probably the best thing that has come out of Apple ;-)
I also encourage the use of DivX. See divx.com. This is excellent technology and I think a fair license:
http://www.divx.com/company/partner/indies/FLV is also great and in currently most suitable for viewing video on web pages.sullOn 4/11/06,

Alot of folks have been complaining

From the nature of your videos I've seen, I think you would do well
with a lavalier microphone. You can probably get one from any one of
the big box computer stores or Radio Shack for around $30 or $40.

Actually...here's one for $34...

[videoblogging] Re: Shotgun Microphone?

2006-04-11 Thread Bill Streeter
From seeing how you do your videos I would think that a livelier mic
would be better for you. A good lav will cost some bucks and
unfortunately the good ones require a kind of mic jack that your
camera doesn't have. But you might be able to find a decent one with
a mini jack that doesn't cost that much. But I'm more familiar with
the expensive ones so I can't make any specific suggestions. Also a
handheld mic on a stand in front of you (just out of the shot) might
be another good solution. Electro Voice makes a good hand held ENG
mic for about $100 (sorry can't recall the model number). Also you
tend to shoot in really live rooms (meaning they have a lot of
echo). So shooting in a more dead space with carpeting and curtains
would improve your sound a bit as it's recorded now.

[videoblogging] Re: Is it Fair Use to link directly to a vlog's video?

2006-04-11 Thread LeanBackVids.com
Re-hosting a video may not be legal due to the specific video's
copyright. In addition, there may be issues with embedding a video
into your branded site due to misrepresentation.

However, hot linking is here to stay...

Take hot out of this buzzword and it is nothing new. The inherent
nature of the Internet allows us to link to files that are on the network.

A vlogger may prefer that viewers come to their site to watch their
videos, but this is not a requirement. Aggregators that support media
enclosures are hot linking. Bloglines and the other text readers
offer a link directly to the video, and we are able to watch videos in
FireANT and iTunes.

All this without ever visiting the site.

iTunes is considered the worst since it doesn't offer comment links
and no clear site links. In addition, they promote an iTunes-based
comment page rather than the content owner's page. And this is where
vloggers get their feelings hurt...

I'll admit - I too get frustrated by direct vid links, but the fact is
that over 94% of Ridertech's subscribers come from iTunes and rarely
(if ever) visit the web site.

But what can I do about this? The first step was to add branding into
the videos (aka intros/outros).

The fear of hot linking may actually be holding us back. Rather
than getting pissed, we should each have a revlog (w/ direct media
links). This can be done w/ a whole new blog or simply start tagging
videos in del.icio.us.

Of course, site and feed links are a nice courtesy if you are going to
link to someone's video, but it is not required and cannot be expected.

[videoblogging] Looking for a good camera

2006-04-11 Thread Heath
I was hoping you all could help me out. I am going to be upgrading my
video camera here sometime soon, and I need some help. The camera I
have now is a JVC and it works pretty well, but what the big thing it
is missing is a way for an external mic.

So my needs are a camera that has an external mic capibility, plus
everything else that my JVC GR-D250 has, well maybe not everything but
most of it, manual white balane, different speeds etc, Also I am
guessing but by having an exteranl mic you would also get rid
of motor noise when zooming, is that correct? I tried doing a search
for information on this in the group but I didn't have much luck so I
aplogize if this has been discussed before. Thanks for your help

Oh I am looking to hopefully only spend about $1.00, just kidding but
money is an object so I am hoping to spend under 400 if that is
possible, just looking for a good entry level or slightly above camera
that will fit my needs for more than 6 months you know..thanks..

For what it's worth, Anne and I are digging our new Canon ZR500. It's firewire interface to the pc/mac, not usb, takes mini dv tapesslight noise from the motor, but it does have an external mic jack.I did a bit of leg work before buying it and from what I found, it performed really well against others in the entry level. Especially in the low-light scenarios. It was ~$500 Canadian (with the firewire card and taxes)
The last 4-5 vlog posts on byteme (http://8bitme.blogspot.com) were done with it. Only had it work a few days, nothing to complain about it so far.

Re: [videoblogging] re: Is it Fair Use to link directly to a vlog's video?

Hello,On 4/11/06, Nerissa (TheVideoQueen) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

So you're suggesting that instead of hot linking that people should re-host the video?
Yes. Because that's one of things that people here were saying was bad. And people were slamming Veoh for doing it.
I didnt read the veoh thread. But Veoh isa business entity, not a person. A business cannot (should not) share your content for business purposes without your express permission.
I've had people hijack my bandwidth by grabbing the direct url to my video content on my host only to embed that link ina player on their website. They were popular websites and generated more views of my videos than I did (translate bandwidth). But there were no links back to me or my website, no credit gicen to me. That's hijacking bandwidth (and content in my case becasue I only give permission to share my article/blogs in their
entriety.) I think what we need here is a technological advancement.People seem to want to get their statisics. And people want to be in control. But they don't actually want to have to serve the huge video files. (Because that costs alot of money.)
This is a case where P2P technology (like BitTorrent or Gnutella) could come to be a solution. You'd hit the vloggers server; that server would be able to gather statistics, and then it would tell the client to go get the video off a P2P system (like BitTorrent or Gnutella).
Of course, this doesn't address other concerns. (Like misrepresentation. And commercial use.) But I think it is part of a solution to our problem. You know, we as vloggers should create a road map for what we want software (that deals with vloggers) to support. And try to get all the players in the area on-board with our road map. And implement it.

sure, but that still requires you to use itunes. they could simply offer
a non-ad streamed version alongside the ad supported version. let the
consumer decide if it's worth a buck or two to skip the ads. it would be
an interesting experiment at least.

[videoblogging] Fixing the noise floor

2006-04-11 Thread wlight
Hey, guys.

Tonight, I am, for the first time, taking on the daunting task of trying
to squelch the noise floor of some interviews we did this weekend.
Because of our need to do everything on the spot, there's going to be a
reasonable amount of environmental noise in the audio track with the
interviewee's voice.

What's the best way to attack audio cleanup for something like this?

[videoblogging] It's JerryTime! Receives 2006 Emmy Nomination

2006-04-11 Thread Digital
Jerry and Orrin just forwarded this to me.. Congrats guys, this is
awesome!

News Release

For Immediate Release
April 11, 2006

?IT?S JERRYTIME!? RECEIVES 2006 EMMY NOMINATION

BOSTON, MA April 11, 2006? It?s JerryTime!, (www.itsjerrytime.com),
the quirky animated web micro-series produced by two brothers, Orrin
and Jerry Zucker, is on the verge of forging television history.

The National Academy of Television Arts Sciences today announced
that the hit animated website It?s JerryTime! has captured one of six
nominations for the first Emmy Award to be presented for original
entertainment programming created specifically for non-traditional
viewing platforms, including computers, mobile phones, iPods, PDAs and
similar devices.

The new Emmy Award will first be presented at the 33rd Annual Creative
Arts Daytime Emmy Awards, hosted by Meredith Vieira, on Saturday,
April 22 at New York City?s Marriott Marquis.

It?s JerryTime!, featuring the wonky animated ?true tales from the
life of Jerry?, debuted in November 2005 and become a cult hit,
getting rave reviews from such international venues
as Business Week, The Boston Globe, Boing Boing and the UK Guardian
Ltd. In its short time online, ?the homemade cult hit vlog epitomizes
what people's video is all about.? (IEEE Spectrum)

The hilariously downbeat photo collage animation, produced by
award-winning Graphic Designer Orrin Zucker, dramatizes the hard-luck
tales of his brother Jerry, using only the
most basic tools of a digital camera, Adobe After-Effects and clip
art. Jerry writes, edits and performs the original stories and ragtime
piano music.

In the first episode, ?Who?s That Guy??, Jerry goes to a bar, and is
accused of stealing popcorn by the manager. He inexplicably stays for
lunch, endures hostile service, and then finally debates how much of
a tip he should leave. In the current episode called ?The Karate
Date?, Jerry?s painful date with a Karate instructor is highlighted,
where Jerry learns the ?Rules of the Dojo??the hard way.

The 2006 Emmy Awards will mark the first time the National Television
Academy has recognized original programming first distributed on new
media platforms. In a little more than two months time, from the call
for entries to the deadline, 74 entries were submitted ? more than any
other Emmy Award category.

I also must profess my love for the Panasonic PV-GS150. It's got
manual control for most things (VERY GOOD TO HAVE), a hot accessory
shoe, external mic, and headphone jack (ESSENTIAL). The extra-long
battery pack gives me a full day of shooting, and it's got Firewire.

I looked around for a long time, and honestly, it's one of the best
as far as combinations of features and price. It costs a little
more, but you definitely get what you pay for.

[videoblogging] Re: Shotgun Microphone?

2006-04-11 Thread Daryl Watson
Hi Monique,

Although this doesn't directly answer your question, I came across a blog a
while ago that has a few DIY tips for recording sound.

http://postsound.blogspot.com/

While it won't help you directly it might provide a few helpful suggestions
or trigger some other thoughts about recording sound and improving sound
quality.

Wikipedia also has a good entry on microphones, that might help to determine
what kind of microphone best suits your needs. I.e. Omnidirectional,
cadioid, hyper-cardioid, bi-directional, shotgun.

We've been using a camera mounted shotgun microphone for our FEZ TV stuff.
We've recorded some interviews using radio microphones, (not yet edited) but
this was cause the guy who does camera is a sound recordist in his day job
and had the equipment on standby.

 Hi Guys,

Alot of folks have been complaining about the sound on my vlogs. I've done
all sorts of things to improve it, but to no avail.

Jay Madore suggested a shotgun microphone. A few questions about that:

My camera is a a Panasonic PVGS39. You have to plug the microphone in the
front - there is no mount, therefore I'm having a hard time finding a good
microphone. Any idea where I can find a good, relatively inexpensive $75 to
$175 shotgun microphone that will work with my camera?

[videoblogging] an incredible video

Please take a moment to go watch this:
http://ireneuncensored.blogspot.com/2006/04/be-on-look-out-watch-video-

This is what I believe videoblogging is about. The chance for stories

I'm looking at PenguinTV for watching, and whatever I get to actually

Re: [videoblogging] Is it Fair Use to link directly to a vlog's video?

2006-04-11 Thread andrew michael baron
People have mostly gotten to the point on this thread already with
regards to what is socially acceptable under different scenarios,
though I'm pretty sure that no matter the who, what, where, when, or
why, no matter what is fair use or no, no if's and's or but's, one of
the general laws of the internet is that you are allowed to link to
anywhere.

If the recipient of a link does not wish to support your use, it's
the responsibility of that person to make their content private. If
you post a file up on the internet, there is nothing you can do about
someone who links to your file, from what I understand.

Thus, even if it's not socially acceptable, or undesirable, you can
not get in trouble for hotlinking to someone else's video on the
internet. Even if the video is illegally put onto the web, the
guilty party is the host or person who put the video there, not the
person who links to the video.

My question is Is it Fair Use to link directly to a vlog's video?

You're asking the wrong questions. There are two questions that
 should be
 asked instead:

   a) Is it legal to link directly to a vlog's video?
   b) Is it good practice to link directly to a vlog's video?

And as all hard questions the answer to both is: It depends. b)
 depends on
the social context and community opinion. I can't comment too much
 about
that, but I do think many people accept direct links to a video as
 long as
there is also a clear link to the vlog entry's permalink (where
 people can
 do comment, etc.).

 As for the legality...:

And more importantly, if it isn't Fair Use, should it be? And an
 equally
important question, if it is Fair Use, should it not be?

Generally speaking the video is online so it is fair game to link to.
That's how the web works. Personally I prefer links to vlog entry
permalinks because that's how blogs work. Sadly the world doesn't
 revolve
 around me.

There are general copyright and misappropriation laws you have to
 follow.
I can't list them all, and as always I strongly recommend going out
 and
buying a text book on mass media law (I've read Pember, Don Mass
 Media
Law which covers all applicable laws. Get any post-DMCA edition
 used).
Anyone publishing media should make themselves familiar with the laws.

 Two things you cannot do:

   a) You cannot present someone else's work as your own. So be
 careful if
you embed someone else's video directly on one of your pages. You
 need to
make it very clear that this work is not made by you (giving credit
 and
 linking earns you brownie points).
   b) You cannot use another name or likeness for commercial
 purposes (ie.
to sell crap) without their permission. American Apparel cannot use
 Ryanne's video about them (URL:
 http://ryanedit.blogspot.com/2006/03/american-apparel-rock-on.html
 ) in a
commercial without her permission, not even if Ryanne allowed
 commercial
 use in her CC license.

 IANAL, blabla.

Yeah. Once it's more polished and I finish adding some more technologies. Maybe at the end of this summer.
