[videoblogging] Supervloghouse this Saturday

2007-03-29 Thread Jay dedman
For anyone in San Francisco, we got quite an event planned:
http://upcoming.org/event/168359

We'll be making customized Creative Commons trailers that anyone can
insert into their video this Videoblogging Week. The more we insert
the CC license IN the video...the more awareness will spread as our
videos circulate/aggregate. And we can do it with style and insanity.

You can see the whole list of events around the world here:

[videoblogging] Welcome to the Vlogging Class of 2007

2007-03-29 Thread Jan McLaughlin
My two-year vlog-aversary is this month, and in that spirit revisit the
early days of this list.

I write, because one of the early precepts of this group is something worth
remarking upon.

That precept is that every new person here is promptly welcomed aboard with
a reply to their introductory email.

As each "class" moves through vlog-growth, it falls from the class of 2004
to the class of 2005, and to the class of 2006, to honor the spirit of the
vlogging community here on this list - what makes it special. [openness,
helpfulness, adding value]

As a member of the class of 2005, I ask younger classes to be aware of
community responsibility. A responsibility created by virtue of all the
knowledge and information you receive in reading this list. My own lasting
contribution is http://vlogpresskit.blogspot.com. Most useful would be to
subscribe to my delicious tag 'vlogpresskit' here: <
http://del.icio.us/rss/love_detective/vlogpresskit> If you prefer just to
hear news that contains mentions of specific vloggers, use this feed: <
http://del.icio.us/rss/love_detective/vloggersinthenews>

Feel free to email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you've a story you think
ought to be included, or post a link to this list. I cull a lot of press kit
info from here.

As my own vloglife grows, with less time for learning, I'm not great at
fulfilling community responsibilities on this list 'cause I'm skimming, but
am conscious of the atmosphere.

Have been proud of the way this group operates of late. We're doing a great
job of keeping it civil, relevent and interesting. It 'feels' nice.

That said, a few folks have recently arrived here without quick welcoming
response.

Jay showed me by example how a community survives and flourishes. A prompt
welcome was part of that.

He's really busy of late as his vlog-career flowers. Mine begins to flower
and I see that with that, there's neither time nor energy to welcome
newcomers with the speed they deserve.

That chore falls to those of you at a stage in your development when you're
reading and posting here a lot.

I'm counting on the class of 2006 to teach by example what this community
is. And you, the class of 2006, will pass the legacy on to the class of
2007.

Jan

P.S. Oh crap, did I just write that?

[videoblogging] Re: democracy player - newbie question

2007-03-29 Thread Gromik Tohoku
Hi,

Blip.tv uses democracy player as a distribution for
videoblog films.

I was wondering once I download a movie via democracy
player, can I upload it on my iPod?

sorry this is a really newbie question.

Thanks for providing an answer,

2007-03-29 Thread Bill Cammack
Yes you can.

Open your downloaded file in iTunes. Connect your iPod, and drag the
video from the iTunes list onto the location where you can select your
iPod. It will either start transferring it, or it will tell you it
can't do it because the video isn't in the correct format. If it
won't send it, select the video you want to send to the iPod and at
the menu on the top, select ADVANCED and then CONVERT SELECTION FOR
IPOD in the drop-down. iTunes will make another file for you that's
compatible, and then you'll be able to send it to your iPod.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: A question about viewership habits....

2007-03-29 Thread Jan McLaughlin
One thing stuck me about your comment, Randolfe

A comment of, "Cool" is not necessarily from an airhead.

Sometimes it's simply a function of time.

Would you prefer someone who liked your work leave no comment than, "Cool"?

Sometimes, "Cool" is all I have to give, but that doesn't make it nuthin'.

[videoblogging] Re: democracy player - newbie question

2007-03-29 Thread Bill Streeter
Not a bad question--one of the purposes of this list is for newbie
questions.

Actually I think the premise of your question is slightly off. Blip
doesn't "use" the Democracy Player, you use the Democracy Player to
get Blip.tv content. You can also use other aggregators like FireAnt
and iTunes to get Blip.tv content. If you subscribe to a Blip feed
directly in iTunes and configure ipod to automatically sync podcasts
then your Blip.tv content will make it to your ipod as podcasts.

I should also point out that this only works when the original
content is in an ipod compatible format. Blip.tv doesn't require all
their users to submit or publish iPod compatible files so not
everything from blip will necessarily work on your ipod.

I'm not a mac user, but I got a used copy of this book based on David's

valuable. The first couple chapters have nothing to do with what buttons
to push, but editor's job, film language, editing patterns, and preparing to
edit. This was just the type of guidance I've been trying to find and now
comes the fun of applying the principles ... B

[videoblogging] Twitter & vlogging & Twittervlog!

2007-03-29 Thread Rupert
Today is my 2 year vlogiversary. I haven't posted nearly enough in
that time, and most of my old stuff is offline.

I've always wanted to post more inconsequential short moments, to
document cool, beautiful or interesting things as they happen.

In the end, I just film a lot of moments, and never post them because
I don't want to clutter up my main vlog. Stupid.

I got a Nokia N93 in January and thought that it would mean I would
film a lot of short Moments and post straight from the phone, but I
kept filming and not posting. More stupid.

I thought I would try and use videobloggingweek to force me to do
it... but then there are other, longer-form things I also want to do.

SO ANYWAY, I've only been Twittering for a week or so, but I love its
immediacy and disposability - and a lot of the text moments recorded
there remind me of what I wanted to do with vlogging, and with my N93.

Seems to me that these video moments belong more on Twitter than they
do on a blog. They're for immediate consumption, and need the
immediacy and disposability and Now-ness of Twitter, rather than
being viewed later via feed or on a blog.

So I checked it out, and there's a free browser-based tool at http://
www.twitterfeed.com/ which takes any RSS feed and posts it to Twitter.

I've set it up so that I can film a short moment on my N93, email it
(via regular wifi) to Blip, then Twitterfeed.com automatically takes
my Blip feed and posts it to Twitter - to http://www.twitter.com/
twittervlog/

The result is a Tweet which contains the post title and a TinyURL to
the Blip video (and, if you want, a description in however many
characters you have left.)

ALL FREE! ALL AUTOMATIC! ALL THE TIME!

God damn, I love the web, and all the people that make these things
free.

Twittervlog is a special video only Twitter account in addition to my
regular one, but you could just set Twitterfeed to post your Feed to
your regular Twitter account.

Even better, we should set up a Videobloggingweek twitter account
which runs off a feed of all the videobloggingweek videos as they're
posted. I will set this up - which feed should I use? I'm confused
about all the different ways we'll be centrally aggregating the
vbweek videos. Let me know, if you have thoughts or concrete info on
this.

When I have a moment, I will put my Twittervlog process on the wiki.

Re: [videoblogging] Twitter & vlogging & Twittervlog!

2007-03-29 Thread Steve Garfield
That is a good question and although there are many ways to find
videos tagged with videobloggingweek2007, what we need is someone to
step up and provide an easy and fun user experience for people who
want to watch Videoblogging Week 2007 videos...

If I had to take a stab at it, other than the tagging route, everyone
who is participating in Videoblogging Week 2007 would submit their
feed to a site where, you would then be able to get out a combined feed.

You might also want to have the feed valid only for posts from April
1st through April 7th.

I would think that we could add our feeds to some type of OMPL
directory, and then work with that.

Anyone have an idea for a solution along these lines?

Re: [videoblogging] Twitter & vlogging & Twittervlog!

2007-03-29 Thread Rupert
should have said, i was prompted to look for the autoposting method
after seeing Steve Garfield's little post from a waiting room earlier
today (http://blip.tv/file/182536), which he shot and cut on his N95
and announced on Twitter and made me think "YES! This is what I'm
talking about!". same thing, only manual. equally, it would work
great with a webcam/email setup.

On 29 Mar 2007, at 19:15, Rupert wrote:

Today is my 2 year vlogiversary. I haven't posted nearly enough in

Hey Rupert.

great that you are trying this.

also refer to tumblr.com for "blogging without the fuss" idea.

we have had some discussions here mostly inititiated by Steve
Watkins about a different environment that takes the best of a group
like this yahoo mailing list, discussion forums, chat and add in ability to
include video, audio, images etc..
it's been a vision of mine and others.

so recently i was invited into a service called Tangler.com.
i have talked to their community manager, marketing/strategy person and CEO
within their tangler environemnt.
so i spoke of how some people from this videoblogging group would find
tangler interesting.
it is similar to twitter. but its also unique. so far, i am enjoying it.
over time, i expect it to get much better.

if you would like an invite, please email me off-list. though i believe
they plan to open up to public some time in April.

2007-03-29 Thread sull
I had suggested setting up a shared blip account or evenbetter using the
blip upload API in an account designated for vbweek07.
no takers though. that would give you the master vbweek07 blip feed to use.

else, could setup a PlanetPlanet style aggregator site that includes feeds
with a tag or category of videobloggingweek2007.
that would also give you a merged rss and opml.

i'm too busy to even write the few messages i am posting to this group today
so i'm out :/

Re: [videoblogging] Twitter & vlogging & Twittervlog!

2007-03-29 Thread Rupert
I asked Blip once before about publishing my 'Blipfoot' email for
multiple people to upload vids to, and they said no (understandably)
but i wonder if they'd make an exception for vbweek, and have a
dedicated email address and/or upload page publicly available for a
VBWeek account, which would then output a feed. Like you say, it
could be open between 1st and 7th April.
Are you guys reading this over at Blip...? if no reply by tomorrow,
I'll just send an email direct.

If I had to take a stab at it, other than the tagging route, everyone
who is participating in Videoblogging Week 2007 would submit their

I'd like to add that iTunes cannot convert all videos to an ipod
compatible format also. It will not play or convert WMV's or SWF's
which are two of the most common formats.

THat said... wmv's are statistically pretty rare among videoblogs.
Just how rare I don't know... and even rarer perhaps among blip users.
Flash is also pretty oncommon in subscription feeds too depending on
how advanced you are and where you look. For example... I doubt there
are even a handful of feeds coming from blip that have a Flash as the
default video format coming from RSS, and if you look in the iTunes
podcasting directory you'll certainly find none. This is because flash
is usualy used only for web based playback and is not easily
downloadable and syndicateable, especially to 3rd party hardware.

On the other hand the biggest video site on the web, Youtube ONLY
offers Flash in their feeds. Both Mefeedia and Democracy do support
flash and I can't speak for democracy, but on Mefeedia the probability
of finding video feeds that are using flash is increasingly pretty
rapidly, while WMV's and all other non-Quicktime/non-iTunes/non-iPod
compatible formats are on the decrease.

In fact... "just what formats are vloggers using?" is a great question
for Frank Sinton over at mefeedia.com. I can think of noone else who
can dig up such info as to the state of the video blogging space.
Perhaps he'll read this and do a little reasearch, take a slice of all
the last months activity and let us here know what percentage of what
videoblogs and podcasts were in what format. I think MANY here would
really like to know.

All this is to say. Gromik, welcome to the videoblogging group...
great question... I hope you like democracy and blip... and if you
have any videos that iTunes won't convert to an iPod compatible format
on the fly or any trouble whatsoever let us know. We're definitely
interested.

Also... one last thing... Not that there could be anything better then
Democracy --> iTunes --> iPod... for watching vlogs on your iPod.
But does anyone else have any solutions that might cover 100% of the
video formats and work simpler for vlog aggregation and watching on
your ipod?

I assume you're on mac right Gromik? While it's a superb competitor
to Democracy I don't think the mac version of Fireant.tv has
transcoding either.

Also... Can anyone verify wether you have to have Quicktime Pro or not
in order for iTunes to automatically convert video formats to an ipod
compatible format?

[videoblogging] Re: Twitter & vlogging & Twittervlog!

2007-03-29 Thread Frank Sinton
Since many of you already have your feed in Mefeedia:

http://mefeedia.com/tags/videobloggingweek2007/rss2.xml

2 videos already from Mike Moon. We could also do a feed that is
date-sensitive - good suggestion.

Also, maybe we could do a feed of all the participants and and allow
for some sort of export we are open to these if people want it...

For viewing, of course, you could always view on the web:

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Twitter & vlogging & Twittervlog!

2007-03-29 Thread Rupert
Yeah. Further to what I said about Blip, actually my personal gut
feeling is that we should support Mefeedia and have them as central
aggregation point of choice for videobloggingweek2007. if we can get
a feed of tagged videos out, then that's perfect, isn't it?

Since many of you already have your feed in Mefeedia:

2 videos already from Mike Moon. We could also do a feed that is
date-sensitive - good suggestion.

Also, maybe we could do a feed of all the participants and and allow
for some sort of export we are open to these if people want it...

For viewing, of course, you could always view on the web:

Hi Frank,
Does mefeedia now read my tags from my blog?

Like the ones on TypePad?

This sounds good if I don't have to do anything extra when I post.

You can tag your mobile videos.

That way people can keep the videos inside their normal feeds.

[videoblogging] Time To Start Sending Bush Video Emails?

2007-03-29 Thread Patrick Cook
Hi everyone:

With President Bush threatening to veto both bills coming out of the
House & Senate providing funding for the War In Iraq but with the
condition that we start pulling out by March 2008, do you think we
should all continuously email the President until he gets the message
that can he can no longer get his own way like the spoiled brat he's
been for the last seven years?

I say we do.

I say we post our videos on someplace like YouTube or LiveVideo and
send the President the links to them.

This way, he can't help but to read our blogs like he does the ones from Iraq.

Thoughts?

[videoblogging] Podslurping

2007-03-29 Thread bordercollieaustralianshepherd

Invasion of the Data Snatchers
03.27.07

Data theft via removable storage devices is a big problem. Are you
prepared to prevent podslurping?

always something

By Neil J. Rubenking

Podslurping (a neologism for the illicit copying of data to a portable
storage device, such as an iPod) came about with the widespread
availability of tiny gadgets with massive storage capabilities and
high-speed connections—specifically, USB and FireWire. Endpoint
security products, which protect against this kind of
misappropriation, tend to be targeted at large enterprises that want
to protect sensitive corporate data. Small businesses and individuals
are also likely to have data they don't want slurped. Now they, too,
can get protection, thanks to the apps reviewed here.

What do you need for protection against podslurpers? At a minimum, we
recommend an endpoint security product that blocks access to all USB
storage devices except preapproved ones. Unfortunately, this prevents
only simple theft via iPod or USB key, leaving plenty of other options
for a determined thief. True endpoint security has to block all
endpoints, including (but not limited to) floppy disk, CD, and DVD
drives, as well as removable hard drives. Luckily, at least one
provides decent protection against the invasion of the data snatchers.

That was awesome, thank you.

Grandpa passed at 8:30 this morning, a week shy of his 95th bday. I was
holding his hand as he took his last breaths.

Our final vlog was recorded 2 days ago from the hospital:

It was such a joy to see him embrace new technology the last few years. I
believe (and he said) that it was the online connections...his digital
congregation...that kept him alive and full of meaning for his final
chapter.

much love,

2007-03-29 Thread Gena
My respects to Caleb and to you for the good work that both of you did
in trying to remind everyone about the healing energies of love and
acceptance.

It is wonderful that you recorded the dialogs between the two of you
and the extended family. There are days when I needed a dose of
positive light and viewing the videos made me smile.

Blessings,

[videoblogging] Alternative to Videoblogging Week

2007-03-29 Thread valdezatron
The videoblogulebrities will have you believe that April 1st marks the
beginning of "Videoblogging Week." I'm here to tell you, brothers and
sisters, that the first week of April is traditionally reserved for
WRECK & SALVAGE PROPAGANDA PURPOSES ONLY.

We at Wreck and Salvage encourage you to not create your own media
during this time. Any such actions will be seen as an imminent threat
to our sovereignty. Instead, sit there and ingest Wreck and Salvage
transmissions. If you have to make anything, please - WRECK & SALVAGE
PROPAGANDA ONLY and be sure to tag your videos "Bikini Grease."

Thank you for your support (really, you have no choice).

We will be disseminating 21 new doctrines from the following locales:

I believe the correct response can be found in a late 20th century
short fiction story by the beloved yet cranky author Harlen Ellison,
entitled "Repent, Harlequin!, Said the Ticktockman"

I quote:

"Get Stuffed!"

;-)

Busting sovereignty every chance I get,
Vlog on people, vlog on...!
