Re: [videoblogging] anyone know how to capture a video conference call from computer to computer

2007-06-12 Thread Jan McLaughlin
First thing is to determine whether your interview subject has a web cam.

Then, what video communications software they have.

Two options seem to work best: iChat (mac) and Skype (both mac & pc). Yahoo
messenger has video conference capabilities too. Basically, whatever video
conference software your subject has, you should have as well, and be
prepared to record from that. Else, convince your subject to download and
familiarize themselves with a new program.

For iChat, I use ecamm's Conference Recorder. This is without doubt the
easiest I've found. Trouble is, not everybody owns a mac.
http://www.ecamm.com/mac/conferencerecorder/

For Skype, I use iShowU (mac - thanks Verdi), which is a screen capture
program and may be used with any video-capable chat application. I've only
used it for an interview once, and still troubleshoot audio recording in it.

Best of luck!

Yes it was a great event. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to
make it all work. It's always fun to get together with everyone.

The thing that I really loved about this was it was all about the
work--the end product of what we all do. Well done. I wish I could
have seen all the programs but the ones I did catch were really fun.
And nothing beats the experience of seeing this stuff in a real
cinema environment with a bunch of people at the same time--just
watching--with no interuptions.

And thanks to everyone who came to my mashup screening. I was happy

True BUT if groups and people who are hell bent on breaking the law
were to STAY AWAY, they wouldn't BE in a position to be arrested in
the first place, no?

Not if they have a website or plans already outlined elsewhere in
advance. I do believe it's called PLOTTING the crime. Someone can
correct me if I'm wrong on that.

True BUT do you think the groups whose sole purpose is to come here to
Denver and break the law (As they call it "protesting" mind you) are
gonna care? Of course not. Look at Seattle during WTO '99. There
were protesters crying out that free speech CAN be expressed WITHOUT
destroying someone else's property, livelihood or business (Something
that NO ONE has the right to do), WHICH IS TRUE. Not even you can
deny that.

> how do we deal with these and other aspects about bad publicity?

It's not "about" bad publicity. It's USING bad publicity to expose
the rogue groups whose sole goal is to come to Denver during the DNC
and give the rest of us PEACEFUL political activists (And ultimately
the city) a black eye in the eyes of the mainstream world.

That's the mission.

Cheers :D

Yes and we need to turn the tables back onto them. In other words,
expose their violent ways and plans so they can be dealt with by
proper authorities BEFORE they strike next year.

And there are those who are just plain STUPID enough to not see any

Unfortunately it is this viewpoint which the mainstream public sees
since it's been proven time and time again to the mainstream public
that activists, no matter how well-intended they are, simply CANNOT be
a sustained self-policing community.

(Note when I say "they", I refer to the mainstream public's view of us
political activists)

This image has to be changed. I dunno how. But we've got to start
somewhere. And if it means using the power of the Internet and our
blogs/videoblogs/podcasts, then I say SO BE IT.

We've got to DO SOMETHING peoples. And the DNC next year right here
in Denver is a good time to prove that political activism CAN be
achieved WITHOUT seeing the city get turned upside down and inside out
on national, if not international, television.

We can't really do anything about suicide bombers and other terrorists
wanting to cause harm, but we can take care of our own so the police
can concern themselves with the suicide bombers and other terrorists
WITHOUT having to worry about what we'll do too.

Just my opinion...

Ohh?? So does that mean that people shouldn't be allowed to commute
to and from work and home in Downtown Denver because the place where
the convention will be housed is ALSO in Downtown Denver (Along with
the many free speech areas)?

One of the local city council members took the approach that one's
right to commute to and from work and home is non-negotiable too. It
may not be in the Constitution or any other legal document, but people
shouldn't be FORCED TO TEMPORARILY RELOCATE or take time off from work

And you know something? He's got a valid point. People SHOULD NOT
have to temporarily relocate or take time off from work just so a
bunch of people can excercise their right to free speech while a bunch
of other people turn the city upside down and inside out on national,
if not international, television. It's just not right. How would YOU
like it if you had to put your life on hold because of this? You
probably wouldn't like it too well, would you?

There's got to be a common ground. It's there alright. It's just a
process of finding it.

If you have no intention of breaking the law, why would you fear

Okay. What do you think IS an appropriate medium or method to accomplish this?

Well then, consider it a challenge. A challenge for the groups to
explain their intentions in case they've somehow been misinterpreted.
If the groups can't explain themselves, then I guess the original
interpretation will just have to stand on their own merits (Whatever
they're worth), now will they?

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Pixelodeon Success!

2007-06-12 Thread Rupert
You've started something great.

The films were amazing on the big screen. Without distraction, with
total immersive focus, they were fantastic to sit and watch. And
contrary to what I'd expected, I didn't see a single film that
suffered from transfer to the big screen. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Curated screenings really worked: Intelligent and eclectic selection
according to a curator's chosen theme - not just 'best of' or 'most
popular' highlights from a single genre or subgenre.

I'd like to see more of this online. A curator could choose a theme
and then revlog an eclectic selection of great videos connected to
that theme. The 'gallery' could even be structured like a blog -
that way you'd be able to guide the viewer down the page to watch
each film in turn, easily and sequentially - but it doesn't have to
update. It could be like a permanent virtual gallery space showing
just these videos.

Thank you for having me. I had an AMAZING time.

[videoblogging] Re: YouTube to have H.264 versions

2007-06-12 Thread Steve Watkins
Yay, its good news, here were my thoughts on it:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/60988

My main question is whether the h264 versions will also be easily
available to download from the youtube site, as this will mean quite a
change in not just the format, but also youtube's whole tendency to
shy away from letting people legitimately download youtube videos.

Cheers

Not to mention the return of the Director account as well since along
with this will undoubtedly come more and more people who will want to
create shows LONGER than a scant 10 minutes. And by switching to
H.264, this is possible WHILE STILL staying around 100 MB or so (I
know because I've done it!).

Add to this the fact that LiveVideo already allows downloading (Though
I'm not sure in what format since I do not use them for that purpose.
I'm assuming FLV, but again I can't say for sure).

Just my $.02 worth :D

I just downloaded Safari for Windows and I have to say I AM IMPRESSED
INDEED. :

Sure it's got some nuiances (sp?) such as NO tabbed browsing (Unless I
missed something?) and the fact the window automatically resizes
itself when I don't want it to. But that's why they call it a Beta.
Only minor stuff.

But at least it doesn't tie up my RAM as I remain logged onto Gmail.
This is CRITCAL for me since I get ALL of my email (And unfortunately
ALL of the spam directed at me as well. But hey, you get what you pay

In fact, I'm composing this email using Safari.

We launched a new site this weekend at Pixelodeon at http://

You can now get search, download and remix about 500 hours of George
Bush video from the last 6 years.

Kent, Cheryl and I (along with our friend Eric) were able to grab all
this streaming video from http;//whitehouse.gov/, putting it into
editable formats.

The goal is to start collecting all kinds of political videoand
make it easy to search.
anyone know of a good Ronald Reagan archive?

Anyway...I encourage you to join our email list of you want to help us

And I will fifth or sixth this. Thanks to all the amazing organizers

think about.

And, as always, the best part is meeting all the amazing and kind and
hilarious people that are a part of all this. Only sad I had to leave

People are going to be very disappointed if they think the iphone will
do a fraction of what a mac with os x can do.

On one level, and architectural level, its true that its os x and the
safari browser. But this doesnt mean what it sounds like it means. The
most dramatic example of this is the no 3rd party apps stuff. Ive
checked more details and Apple have actually not changed their
position on 3rd party stuff at all, they've just spun things to try to
placate developers. In an age where there are browser based apps, they
are saying 'see, this is how you do apps for the iphone, by writing
them as you would any other safari-compatible webpage app'. Well even
with flash there a lot that desktop apps can do that browser ones
cant, and theres no evidence that they are including flash with the
iphone.

iphoney on many levels, unfortunately.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Denver Now Discussing Free Speech & Public Safety Issues For DNC

2007-06-12 Thread Roxanne Darling
While the intent to try to control or prevent those who would be
violent may be laudable and I understand your desire to police from
within (something most other groups like doctors and lawyers find
impossible to do), I think the actual attempts will be fraught with
trouble.

We cannot control other people. We can influence them. It creates a
sticky wicket for the peace-able among us.

And so I would encourage you to get your message out there as loud as
possible and attract as many people to your point of view as possible,
and be able to perhaps demonstrate by the numbers, that the majority
of new media or the voters or the videobloggers are committed to
nonviolence or whatever. (Are we? I don't know actually.)

Any time any of us attempt to speak for or restrain the acts of others
without their express buy on, then we are simply doing the same things
we reject when others attempt to do that to us. It's one of those one
way streets that makes sense when you go down it forward, but really
doesn't makes sense when you turn around and look at it from the other
direction.

You meanwhile have a passion and a vehicle and go to town with it and
see what happens!

Aloha,

Rox

[videoblogging] Spices of Life in Boston Globe

2007-06-12 Thread Steve Garfield
The video blog I shoot and edit for Nina Simonds, Spices of Life, is
featured in the Boston Globe Food section today:

Simonds is the life of this video party

By Jonathan Levitt, Globe Correspondent | June 13, 2007

SALEM -- For the latest episode of her new video blog, cookbook
author Nina Simonds is bouncing around her kitchen throwing together
what she calls the "best dumplings ever." She's funny and charmingly
scatterbrained, with red ballet slippers on her feet, eye glasses
perched on her head, and a voice hoarse from talking and talking and
talking.

Also in the kitchen is Julie Lutts, her tall blonde recipe tester;
Ingrid Schwamb, her personal assistant; Maureen Yasi, a shorter
blondish recipe tester; and Steve Garfield, the quirky Jamaica Plain-
based video blog pioneer who tapes the show. Everyone is laughing,
cooking, getting bossed around, and mugging for the camera. It's like
they're not really doing anything serious here, which is why
Simonds's vlog, spicesof life.com , is becoming a hit.
