noble intentions for sure - unfortunately, the auto-discovery feed
link doesn't work and there are no feeds listed on the RSS page.

Hey guys,
Just like to share with you all what we're doing to publicize
k9athlete.com and ask for feedback and additional suggestions.

It's not rocket science, but I thought it might be of interest to
some on this list and thought that some of you might offer some good
feedback.

We're hitting facebook rather hard right now.

---
Created Facebook Page
---
Created a page for the site (which for some reason is not being found
in searches, but that is another matter.

I've posted development screenshots and informative articles from the
site on the page and we currently have 61 fans. Not a lot, but not
bad either for still being a totally closed development site.

---
Created Facebook Application
---
We're creating a facebook Application,
Dog Sport Team of the Week that will highlight outstanding dog sport
performances and allow facebook users to nominate someone for the title.

It's our first, crack at this, but we'll be adding more as we get
this one done.

---
Hosting Weekly Online Radio Show
---
I'm hosting a weekly dog sport radio show, K9Athlete Radio on
BlogtalkRadio, and we're gearing up for our second show, whch will
feature the president of a dock jumping organization and, crossing my
fingers, an 82.5 year old woman who just got her MACH title in
Agility, a very well regarded agility title, and a stunning
performance from an 82 year old woman.

---
Open Letter
---
I've also written an "Open Letter to Dog Sport Professionals" that is
posted on the front page of the site and will be going out to every
dog sport list and site I can get my hands on.

This is a letter specifically for dog sport professionals laying out
what the site is and how it will work for them, and trying to get by
the fears of conflicts of interest. No small task... It's also
supposed to be my foot in the door in grabbing a couple more
outstanding team members.

We will be following up with an "Open Letter to the Dog Sport
Community" for the dog sport community and "An Open Letter to Dog
Sport Retailers".

Each will be posted on lists, the site and direct email.

---
Online Video - need suggestions
---
I will be doing some online video to publicize the site soon, but
it's still a bit too early, and I'm not a big fan of myself in the
traditional videoblogging role. Suggestions here would be great!

I'm thinking of some pro footage, which I have access to, but not
sure how to structure it.

That's pretty much it.

Thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

If this is deemed not germane to the list, I'll be happy to take it
off list.

I just thought this would be of interest to some here.

peace,
Ron Watson

[videoblogging] Image Management Advice Requested from the Group

2009-01-21 Thread Adam Warner
First, I apologize that this is a bit off topic for the videoblogging group,
but I know that many (if not all) of you are the technical types, and may be
able to offer some guidance.

I have a client who has a need to host 1000's of product images in various
formats, .jpg, .gif, .tiff, .eps...and make those images available for download
to ONLY TO distributors, and not the general public. I have been searching for
open source scripts that will work, but so far, have been unsuccessful.
Ideally, I would be interested in a script that would allow me to host the
images on Amazon S3 (simple storage), so the client could manage costs. Open
source or paid, either one would be a step in the right direction.

Any advice is greatly appreciated and feel free to reply off list.

Thanks!

As for the feed autodiscover, that's a glitch - I contacted them
about that. You've got to expect things like that on the first day.
Also, they don't have any videos up yet, so that might explain why
it's not been found yet.

I think comments are overrated, especially for politics. They didn't
have comments enabled on the Obama campaign blog, either. If I were
them, I wouldn't have open comments. It would quickly fill up with
hate and anonymous trolls, and put off people who don't hate.
You don't want that on the WhiteHouse.gov site
They do have comments enabled on youtube.com/whitehouse
I don't have comments enabled on my youtube videos
This is the first page of comments from the video of his Inaugural
address, when I looked there, which I think say it all.
These comments are inappropriate for the White House site.

To me it seems like a basic programming error - they could have had
either a "Hello World" entry, or simply not offered the auto-
discovery feed link until there was an entry. But hey, in the grand

We cringe and argue about money and videoblogging often on this list.
(probably because it's important and always in our face)

Here's an example of community funded media projects:
http://spot.us/pitches/101
David Cohn has done a great job making the site usuable.

I've said before that I think the same thing can happen for anyone's videoblog.
If you are creating video projects that people care about, they will fund it.
You got to hustle just like with anything...but I think it's a great
alternative to straight up advertising.

Notice that this is more than a Paypal Button on the sidebar.
You must actually create a Pitch with a clear explanation of the
project, who you are, deliverables, a specific monetary goal, and a
timeframe.

You probably wont get rich doing this, but you'll make the projects
you love and building a body of work.
You'll also know if anyone cares since they'll be putting their money
where their mouth is.

2009-01-21 Thread Rupert
I'm putting together a project that will hopefully allow people to
take a share proportional to their investment.
Basically just a limited partnership profit-share model.

Robert Croma sent me a great book called My First Movie - interviews
with famous indie filmmakers about making their first features.
The first interview is with the Coen's.
They did this for Blood Simple. Made a trailer, then spent a year
going to see small businessmen in NY and Minnesota, getting them to
invest. They raised $750,000 this way. Just a limited partnership,
with the production company as the general partner.
Apparently it was the way lots of NY horror movies were made in the
80s - they got the idea from Sam Raimi, who funded The Evil Dead this
way, too.

I figure that if it worked in the 80s, with these two guys travelling
thousands of miles lugging a 35mm projector around from meeting to
meeting, it should be even more possible to do now with an internet
crowdfunding approach (combined with the same old real-world
presentations to local punters).

Paying an accountant and a lawyer to set up the legal structure and
contract/terms is more costly than bunging up a ChipIn widget,
obviously, and not practical if your budget is very small. With
larger budgets and projects, getting the odd $10 ChipIn isn't going
to cut it - you've got to go out looking for investors. Even if the
majority of them are still only putting in $10, it's an extra
incentive - this way it's not just a philanthropic donation - there's
actually a (small) chance of a return. And you can help build trust
and interest at the same time with total online transparency in your
production process and budgeting.

My main shoot for this will be in November - details of the project
to follow when I'm ready.

I read that in the US, there was a tax break for giving to artistic
projects for a while.
Dentists used to be big funders of indie movies for some reason.
wished this tax break still existed.

Look forward to seeing it.
The obnoxious "crowdsourcing" meme is in the air...but few have really
pulled it off effectively.
Videobloggers especially havent tapped into this idea yet.

[videoblogging] IMDBing Your Show

2009-01-21 Thread Chris
I'm wondering how many here have successfully, created IMDB listings
for their internet shows? And what tactics they've used to get around
IMDB's definitions of what does or doesn't constitute a TV series?

And while we're discussing it, is there an IMDB-type database
dedicated to internet series?

Just curious...
