Google "Black Friday" (news, links)
Black Friday is the day when retailers traditionally get back "in
the black"

The Detroit Free Press has included video clips with their story
today on Black Friday of locals waiting in the cold early AM to buy
stuff cheap.

[videoblogging] moblogging: seeking video service

2006-01-19 Thread Jack Olmsted
On Monday, the Sanyo a920 (broadband like speeds, Sprint TV Capable)
cell phone arrived.

What free video sites offer moblogging (sending video from a cell
phone to a service that posts the video to your video blog
immediately)?

I'm looking for something like Flickr.
I can snap a pix with a cell, email it immediately to Flickr that
publishes the photo from Flickr to my blog.

I want to publish the video on a third party site because Sprint
only keeps the video for a limited time on their server.

Thanks,

JD,

Great interviews! Thanks for being the johnny-on-the-spot vlogger.

Do you know why the "Teach" site does not have a contact email
address or a link to an interactive community so that people can
discuss the film/education/classrooms/teachers/etc?

4-H News, a new 4-H Podcast Video Blogging Club in Jefferson County, Washington

[videoblogging] Re: Video Interview Techniques: What Are Your Tips And Tricks?

2006-04-01 Thread Jack Olmsted

Hey Bre,
> What are the tricks and tips for a great video interview?
When I  work with kids interviewing adults for 4-H Network News, I have the interviewee "feed" the young interviewer each question and shoot the q&a as seprate scenes.  There are times when a question is shot 6-8 times before it is said correctly.
A couple of weeks ago we walked in cold to interview a spokesperson for the local Red Cross during a disaster training exercise . We used  a single spotlight clipped to a 6 foot light stand, a wireless hand held mike and a mono pod. The interview was edited together by the 13 year old interviewer in 20 minutes and presented to members of the Red Cross after their meeting. There are some ruff spots in the piece, but you can learn from the mistakes. Our next interviews in this vein will be better.
If you do this type of interview, give yourself editing  "room" on the front and back of each scene.
Shoot a couple of  "listening shots" of yourself and the interviewee60 minutes style.
Last weekend, we shot  "converational interviews" with local artists at an art gallery opening .  We used a tripod, the single 6 foot light stand with a 75 watt spotlight,  a wireless mike and edited the piece together with "flash transitions".  It is was just a 12 minute  stream of consciousness that was edited down to around 8 minutes.
If you have time to prepare, write up a page of questions and go over the list with the interviewee before the shoot.
Shoot B-Roll after the interview.

Markus,

The direct links to the google videos are really, really long so I
created a folder in the groups' "link list":

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/links/Meet_The_Vloggers_0
01123899643/

You can also access the video by going to:

video.google.com
search -> meet the vloggers
click on an image to watch clip

NOTE: Google requires that you download a "player" inorder to watch
videos on their servers. The file is less than a meg.

[videoblogging] SEATTLE: Anti-war Concert Tonight - Seeking Video Blogger

2005-08-15 Thread Jack Olmsted

David Rovics, a globe trotting war protest singer/songwriter will be
performing in Seattle tonight at 7:00 pm (doors 6:30) at The Tribal
Space at The Chocolate Factory, 3400 Phinney (in Fremont). It is a
benefit with Stop the Wall Campaign – US.

I cannot make it to Seattle to record David's performance or
interview him on camera. If you have the time, would you interested
in the project?

Listen to all of David's music at: www.soundclick.com/davidrovics

On August 13th, 2005, David wrote a song for Cindy Sheehan, the
mother of a soldier that was killed in Iraq. She is currently camped
outside Bush's ranch waiting to meet him.  Google her name and
you'll learn all about it, if you haven't heard.

(song lyrics are at the top on the main page of www.davidrovics.com)

David will be performing the song tonight for the first time and
releasing it as a downloadable MP3 on Wednesday.

Multimedia, TV producer Shannon Kringen, a list member, is set to
interview David before the show with her "digital still camera".

I'm seeking a video blogger that can record the interview, and clips
of his performance tonight with a camcorder and post the content
ASAP online.

Song for Cindy Sheehan
David Rovics

Casey was a good boy
He treated people well
And his momma loved him
Anyone could tell
She'd send him off to school
Pack his lunch with care
When he came back home she hugged him
With her fingers in his hair
Cindy, she loved Casey
And when all is said and done
She is every mother
And he was every mother's son

When Casey was a little older
He spent his time each week
In that church in Vacaville
In the service of the meek
In the service of his city
In the service of the lord
With his momma in the pews
All the time they could afford
And if their love alone could save us
Then the world would be one
She is every mother
And he was every mother's son

People thought the priesthood
Was where he'd someday be
So some folks were surprised
When he joined the army
The recruiter told him
He wouldn't have to fight
Cindy hoped this was the case
And prayed for him every night
That was before they sent him
To the desert with a gun
She is every mother
And he was every mother's son

His truck had no armor
And when it came under fire
It and half the soldiers in it
Became a funeral pyre
Cindy, she was sleeping
The moment Casey died
And she knew she'd never see him
Standing by her side
There was no consolation
No safe place she could run
She is every mother
And he was every mother's son

The president, he told her
He died for a noble cause
But Cindy's wondering
Exactly what that was
Since they never found the weapons
And now that Casey's gone
It seems that oil is the game
And Casey was the pawn
Cindy's got some questions
And so does everyone
Because she is every mother
And he was every mother's son

[videoblogging] Cheap and Easy Mike Flag

2005-08-19 Thread Jack Olmsted

This weekend I'm video blogging Seattle Hempfest
(www.seattlehempfest.com). One of the projects on my plate is to
showcase consumer taste tests at the ZipFizz booth (Like I did in
Portland for Socko). ZipFizz is a powered energy drink company.

I met the ZipFizz team at the Bite Of Seattle a couple of weeks ago:
http://www.youtube.com/?v=cY5a8sy7Tbs

I've been racking my brain to come up with a cheap and easy mike flag.
After a simi-productive trip to town, I discovered these cups in the
trash:
http://photos29.flickr.com/35447092_69f997e9ff_m.jpg

All I had to do is cut an "X" in the bottom of the cut...presto...a
mike cut with a cool logo.

The mike flag cup also reduces wind noise.

[videoblogging] Re: song for Cindy Sheehan Video

2005-08-25 Thread Jack Olmsted
Richard,

It was amazed how David Rovics' song went from tapping on his laptop
to an international audience within a couple of days.

On Monday, I sent out a press release that highlighted Steves
contribution:

Song for Cindy Sheehan By David Rovics International Activist
Singer/Songwriter/Blogger Is Now The Number 1 Song On SoundClick.com

Media Outlets Use New Tune In Their Camp Casey Coverage

I am stunned that the alternative press has not picked up on Steve's
video. Camp Casey's management team has turned their backs to the
video and the MP3.

Feel free to sent out the press release or edited it for your local
media outlets.

You appear to be shooting from the hip without knowing the details in
this case. Such as - the videos in question have been online for 191
days and the video blogger was "fired" when he gave his two weeks
notice.

Do you think he was given the ax for his video of the elevator door
opening or the medium, stationary shot of the window?

I asked Clint Sharp to help me phrase the poll question. He didn't
respond.

Today both of my posts about the nation's deadliest hurricane in more
than a century had to do with video blogging. If members followed the
links instead of react to the subject line, they would have seen some
pretty incredible raw, historical footage.

[videoblogging] Sub $500 Camcorder Recommendations for NORML Video Blog

2005-09-06 Thread Jack Olmsted
Two weeks ago I interviewed Allen St. Pierre, Executive Director of
NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), at the
Seattle HempFest:

http://www.current.tv/studio/media/393105.htm

Last week with Allen's approval, I set-up a Video Blog for NORML:
http://normltv.blogspot.com

Over the weekend, Allen asked me to recommend a camcorder that he and
his staff could use to update their Video Blog.

Today, he told me that his budget is around $500.

What would you suggest and why?

I don't understand?
On the sidebar of the NORML Video Blog
There is an RSS link: "NORML Video Blog RSS Feed"
And a feedburner gif banner (the blog has been listed on feedburner

Is the XML feedburner bug necessary to work with FireAnt?
How does FireAnt compare with blinkx.tv?
The NORML blog is spidered by blinkx...

OK. I see that

http://feeds.feedburner.com/NormlVideoBlog

does not validate with

http://feedvalidator.org/

and the blogger RSS feed does not validate either

http://normltv.blogspot.com/rss/normltv.xml

What is wrong?
How can it be fixed?

Can somebody give me a step-by-step?

In my - feedburner

1) Optimize Your Feed (tab)
2) SmartCast™ - Podcasting and iTunes settings (left menu selection)
3) Include iTunes podcasting elements (check)
4) Include "Media RSS" information and add podcast to Yahoo! Search
(check)
5) Ping audio.weblogs.com each time my feed includes new podcasts
(check)
6) Create podcast enclosures from links to (any audio or video file)

What box is checked that shouldn't be checked?

Thanks,

-Jack

It appears that your source feed:

http://normltv.blogspot.com/rss/normltv.xml

Doesn't include the full text of posts, which means that we don't
see the links to media files, which means we can't turn them into
enclosures (via our SmartCast service). There is a setting in
Blogger Settings that will let you publish a full feed instead of a
partial feed, which will then let us see the entire text of your
posts (including links). At that point, things should be working.

Hope this helps,

[videoblogging] Re: NORML $5,000 Video Blogging Contest

2005-09-22 Thread Jack Olmsted
Markus,

The reason fireant did not display any media in the NORML Video Blog
feedburner feed until yesterday is because I was not linking
directly to media files (wmv, mov, mpeg, etc...).

Since the primary free hosting sites (youtube, video.google,
current.tv, vimeo.com, ibsys.com, msnbc, cnn, etc...) used for NORML
Video Blog content do not provide standard media files, subscribers
to the feed will only receive headlines and not video.

In order for iTunes or FireAnt to pick up the RSS video feed,
ourmedia.org or Blip TV would have to be used for the hosting sites
since they maintain standard video files.

Below is an email from Feedburner tech support:

Links to .wmv files in your post ( 1 link per post) should be turned
into enclosures in your feed and make it available to podcatchers
that play wmv files. In the case of your second post, the first
link was turned into an enclosure as seen here in your feed:

http://norml.com/video/norml_jesseventura56.wmv";
length="362803" type="video/x-ms-wmv" />

Finally, linking to sites rather than direct media files will not
work for podcasting. They can still be in your blog and rss readers
will see those links but not podcatcher subscribers such as iTunes
and they definitely won't download those files automatically on the
subscriber pc's

Thanks,
jessiec

Hey Chuck,

The simplest and easiest video editing software for a PC has to be
the automatic editing software by www.muvee.com. I believe you can
download a full working copy for 30 days. If you want to keep it,
just paypal them.

The free program from Microsoft, Windows Movie Maker, is also easy

[videoblogging] Mic Flag Project

2005-10-09 Thread Jack Olmsted
Yesterday, I bought a three pack of Gentle Grip Styrofoam flower
holders (67mm X 89mm X 89mm) at Walmart for $.99 to make mic flags.

See photo (square lower row)
http://craft.dow.com/press/images/floral_foam_low.jpg

Do you know want I can use to create a microphone hole?
I've got soft form to support the mike in the styrofoam holder.
So, the hole needs to be bigger than the mike, but not to big.

Does anyone have a mic flag printout form that I can use to create the
mic flag graphic? What materials work best? Would is be better to get
the graphic done professionally on vinyl or a metal plate?

[videoblogging] Download Dot Com Mature Content? WTF

2005-10-11 Thread Jack Olmsted
On October 7th, I submitted a 7 minute video about the Great Port
Townsend Bay Kinetic Skulpture Race to Download.com for inclusion into
their new free video hosting service: Video Download Dot Com

Yesterday, it went live with a "Mature Content" label

Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Skulpture Race 2005
http://video.download.com/3800-11431_53-6248.html?
tag=vdl_cntnt_col1_rslt_name >

I believe people surfing Download.com seeking "mature content" will be
very disappointed in this material.

Does the PT Kinetic Skulpture Race video of 2005 deserve a "mature
content" label? If so, why?

[videoblogging] Red Ribbion Week Oct. 23-31

2005-10-24 Thread Jack Olmsted
Red Ribbon Week is the nation's largest drug prevention campaign.

Children are encouraged to wear Red Ribbons and pledge to live drug
free lives.

Over 80 million Americans are expected to participate in Red Ribbon
events this year. That is more people than watched the last episode of
Seinfeld.

Monday, Oct. 31, is the final day of Red Ribbon Week. Students in
Alva, OK wear their ribbons home on their Halloween costumes to
say "Boo" to drugs.

If you video blog local Red Ribbon activies, please let me know.

[videoblogging] Re: Red Ribbion Week Oct. 23-31

2005-10-25 Thread Jack Olmsted
Last night on the news, it was reported that 70 million doses of flu
vaccine is available this season nationwide.

Yesterday, I called the national office of D.A.R.E. and was told
that the national organization does not participate in Red Ribbon
Week.

In a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) press release, it was
stated that "Approximately 80 million people participate in Red
Ribbon events nationally from October 23-31."

http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/pubs/pressrel/pr102005.html

I don't understand how the DEA came up with 80 million 2005 Red
Ribbon participants. In fact, it appears to be a totally made up
number.

The press nationwide is using this false figure in their articles
and the public is presented with a dishonest snapshot of the events
support.

This is a good story for vlogger citizen journalists to check out.

[videoblogging] Public Eye - West Coast RocketBoom Clone

2005-10-25 Thread Jack Olmsted
A couple of weeks ago the PublicEye started video blogging daily news
reports from Vancouver, Washington.

Today, a press release was issued:

http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release_html_b1?release_id=99089 >

The autoload MP4 stream did not work on my PC (audio only, no video),
but the downloadable archive clips did play fine with Windows Media
Player.

I really don't like the news report audio. It sounds like they are
using the camera mike. Over time, hopefully they will invest in a
lapel mic.

I called the company and left a voice mail.

2005-11-14 Thread Jack Olmsted
The Vugo ($119.95) is a clone of the ZVUE ($99) (www.zvue.com) that
was released two years ago with limited distribution and lack luster
fan fare. The Hasbro device has a cool video game type design and a
lot more features (records TV, 120meg internal, SD card upgrade,
cartoon content, 3 inch screen). It will be interesting to find out
how long rechargeable batteries last during a single sitting.
