[videoblogging] Re: Anyone going to the New Media Expo?

2008-07-02 Thread Joseph
Hilton Las Vegas hasn't been renovated and your experiences there are
common among conference goers. A conference I represent (PubCon.com)
is a media/conference partner with New Media Expo and my current
company - Storybids will be exhibiting at New Media Expo so I know Las
Vegas well, in fact, over half of the Las Vegas Strip is a client in
one way or another.

My recommendation would be to stay at a hotel with direct monorail
access that is a decent property such as Ballys/Paris or MGM Grand.
Other options that are close by and nice are Treasure Island/TI and
Wynn Las Vegas provides a shuttle every 20 minutes from 8am to 8pm.
Getting a cab is challenging from the convention center - especially
at days end when everyone is heading out to dinner. A much nicer
option that is walkable is the Renaissance on the opposite side of the
convention center and the property is only about 3 or 4 years old so
the rooms are nice and new, however, again, getting a cab at this
property is challenging and I've had to wait upwards of 20 minutes to
get one on a busy night. A big plus to this hotel is no casino and no
smoking so its a lot calmer than most strip hotels.

I'll most likely be staying at Planet Hollywood since I'm a Starwood
Hotels member and they tend to upgrade their Gold and Platinum members
and the walk next door to Paris/Bally's isn't too bad to catch the
monorail to the convention center (10 min.).

Hope this is helpful.

[videoblogging] Re: Recommendations for a small camera (Xacti or other) to shoot in India

2008-06-17 Thread Joseph
Neil,

I'm curious, when you say you've returned everything in the 'Xacti
line' does that include the new Sanyo HD-1000? Or does anyone else
have experience shooting with this camera? I had the previous version
of Sanyo's HD camcorder but lost it and am about to purchase a new one
and would like to know how the new one fares.

Neil Katz here, a journalist. I have had very good experiences with
the Xacti CG65. Small, cheap, shoots well in low light, and is

story for the NY Times with that camera and even snuck a shot into a
report for CBS News on national TV.

Judge image quality for yourself. And keep in mind the NYT site is
 playing at about half resolution.

I have purchased and returned every camera in the Xacti line except
the CG65. The others have better specs, but nothing has a better
picture. And it fits in your pocket, which means you will get the shot.

Battery life is poor. Buy three batteries and a quick charger. Use
an online site to buy non Sanyo batteries. They run $20/each.

The only negative is in order to edit you will have to convert the
native mp4 files into DV. Sanyo says you can edit with mp4 files and
technically you can import them into Final Cut Pro. But it doesn't
 really work, trust me.

That conversion process will take about 1 minute per minute of
footage. So if you shoot three hours, expect three hours of
 conversion when you come home.

As an aside, working in India, if you don't have Sony, you can't get
it fixed or spare parts, adapters, etc.

It produces big video files, though, compared to other little

My thought is to start submitting short (10 to 30 sec) videos to

[videoblogging] .avi v .mov v .wmv/Ourmedia v Blogger

2005-12-18 Thread Joseph Puentes

Okay I'm slowly getting some of the parts together. I've officially
become a VBlogger and want to thank you all in advance for the help
you've offered others and that hopefully will extend my way as well.

Here are a few of my questions:

here is my blog address:

http://blueheron2.blogspot.com/

Note two things:

1) though I tried to follow directions exactly like the video said I was
unsuccessful at making the ScreenShot image into a Link going to the video

2) I was successful at making the text Click here to view the 10 second
video clip into a link for the video

But here is where I get confused and am wondering about things.

the video is located here:

http://www.archive.org/download/MariaHaroVideoProductions/PA_Dee23.wmv

in the video the example has the .mov designation. I started with .avi
and with Windows Movie Maker ended up with the compressed .wmv designation.

3) How do I get it to go from .wmv to .mov? Or should I not do this? Am
I suppose to use that Avid software? If so is there a tutorial for this?

The reason I'm asking is because when I go to ourmedia.org I can easily
see the online video on ourmedia's page:

http://www.ourmedia.org/node/121174

but when I click the link and it takes me to the above .wmv link for the
video and on my system it tries to open with Winamp and nothing shows
up. Its just a blank screen.

I'm wondering and pretty well suspect that I don't have my system
configured correctly.

4) How do I set my computer up so that a file in any of a number of
different formats will open up correctly? Is there something I can read
that explains which designations: .mov, .avi, .wmv, or ??? will open up
in which video viewers: Windows Media Player, Real Player, WinAmp,
QuickTime, etc.? IS this where that FireAnt or MeFeedia would help me out?

well I guess you can see I'm just full of questions.

thanks,

Joseph Puentes

[videoblogging] ClassRoom Lecture VBlogging?????

2005-12-18 Thread Joseph Puentes

I have a friend who is a Professor at a large University who would like
to do VBlogging for some of his lectures. I told him I just started
VBlogging yesterday and didn't really know but that I kind of doubted it
was possible to send out both Video and Audio in the 30-50 minute range
en mass as in Podcasting.

Am I right or wrong about this? It seems to compress something enough
would make the screen so small that details of maps and printed
materials would be hard to see clearly.

what are the parameters of file sizes that can be described in number of
minutes?

What is possible and what is practical? I know when I do a 30-40 audio
podcast that this can take a long time to download for those that have
dial up and also a serious take on my cable modem. But with Video I
would think this would be a hard pill to swallow. What do you all think

[videoblogging] such a Simpleton! Compression

2005-12-17 Thread Joseph Puentes
I just decided to learn how to vblog. It actually doesn't look to
bad except that I can't get past a very basic step.

I went to the Free Vlog tutorial at: http://freevlog.org/#compress

I am using a Dell 4550 PC and have Windows Movie Maker. So I opened
WMM and dragged and dropped an video clip (.avi) onto it while I was
watching the tutorial video on compressing with WMM.

On the tutorial it says to click on Save Movie and then go to
other and to NTSC 768 etc.

Well for the life of me I can't seem to find the Save Movie button
and options to do the other and NTSC 768. [in fact that whole row is
missing I see the menu items -file-edit-view- like in the tutorial and
I see the row of items below that has undo, redo, tasks, collections
and that window, BUT the row with Save Movie Send Record is
completely missing).

I did a get info about Movie Maker and it says Microsoft Windows
Movie Maker Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519: Service
Pack 2) Copyright 1981-2001 Microsoft Corp. Windows Movie Maker
Version 2.1.4026.0

Do I have an old version that needs updating? Or am I just blind
(probably)?

I can't get past step .5 on the compression of the video so I can then
upload to ourmedia/internetarchive.

Can someone please help me here?

thanks,
