Re: [videoblogging] Re: Major Shakeup in Hollywood

2007-11-05 Thread Kathryn Jones
Hi Brook!

I think we do ourselves a huge disservice by not comparing and
contrasting to MSM. In five to ten years, maybe less, all media will
be consumed on demand and from a single portal. A viewer will not
know the difference between MSM and independent creators. If, as
independent creators who are passionate about creating media without
a gatekeeper that speaks to our own particular voices, we are not
careful to establish ourselves as separate from MSM and with our own
unique attributes we may soon find ourselves launching our media into
a viewerless void.

Re: [videoblogging] unexpected benefit of posting to blip

2007-12-21 Thread Kathryn Jones
hey gerry all the videos have already been posted- in some cases for months
- with the same tags and descriptions (and obviously the same subject matter),
and have had an rss feed since september. I began posting on blip last friday
and the google alerts followed soon after, and of course, they link to the blip
file, so that is how I can be quite sure that the alerts are a result of
posting to blip. I can not tell you what blip does to make thier videos google
alert friendly... you would have to ask them.

Re: [videoblogging] video gallery wordpress plugin?

2008-01-03 Thread Kathryn Jones
I ran into this problem with synchronis.tv as well... I needed to use
wordpress for financial reasons and loved how easy it was to upload
my episodes and to alter my code and widgets- even for someone with
almost no coding experience. However we produce live scripted web
dramas and the journal format felt too casual for the viewing
experience I was looking to create. I ultimately used podpress,
which I am definitevely not in love with for video. Wordpress is an
amazing tool, but more video centric themes would be a huge boost to
its functionality, especially as video on the web grows more and more
diverse.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Feeling vindictive...

2008-01-31 Thread Kathryn Jones
As an actor and web producer I must chime in here

I am passionate about and committed to my work as both an actor and a
new media producer, and as such would never allow anyone on my set
whom I didn't either know personally or for whom I have not sought
out a dependable reference, no matter how "captivating" their
qualities..

If you hire actors based on qualities that you find "captivating"
rather than on creativity, professionalism, passion and talent you
send a message to your staff and crew and audience that the creative
arena you choose to work in is defined by "captivating"
personalities, rather than true work ethic and vision.

(how can you expect any better from an actor who is sent the message
over and over again that their value lies in their "captivating"
qualities, rather than in what they can bring to the table creatively
and intellectually?)

Now the amazing Jan has a ton more experience than I on big sets and
I'm sure she has seen some outrageous and unacceptable behavior...
but I was lucky enough to have Jan on my set as well and I am pretty
sure she would agree that throughout a grueling, 10 day, non-paid
shoot (not to mention numerous days of rehearsals) every actor was on
time, professional, respectful, dependable, and creatively engaged...
without exception.

Open your eyes guys!!! Look past the "captivating" qualities out
there. There are a bevy of committed, talented, passionate actors
who would be amazing assets to the projects that you put so much of
your heart and soul into..but to find them you might have to
sacrifice a few "qualities".

Kathryn

hey ron!

I am happy to forward you the release I used for my postcast question

clearance for everyone... just want to stress that a lawyer did not
write it, I cobbled together a template I bought and a few releases I
found, so will it hold up in the supreme court? who knows! (though
along the way I did have a few lawyers sign it)...

sending now... check it out and see if it works for you

Re: [videoblogging] preroll time?

2008-02-07 Thread Kathryn Jones
HI Jim,

Believe it or not research has shown that the most effective pre-roll
add is the thirty second pre-roll, http://tinyurl.com/289a95 However
research has also show that uses skip videos with pre-rolls, http://
tinyurl.com/24hay9

I used a ten-second pre-roll against my best judgement (client
insisted upon it), but my advice to you if you must insert a pre-roll
is to keep it as short as possible and hope its over before the user
has a chance to click away and then follow up with companion links or
a really great mid or post-roll, or even better, convince the client
to let you incorporate their product directly into the content.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Apple TV vs. iPod/iPhone Recommendations?

2008-02-22 Thread Kathryn Jones
revisiting the great apple tv debate once more..

I have spend the past few days experimenting with recompressing my
"35" files- tricky because they are large files with a lot of
movement and not a ton of light (I know! I know! lets not go
there!)... what seems to work best for me is compressing a high
quality .mov , importing into itunes and then recompressing again via
the advanced tab (thats also the best way for me to include my
higher quality thumbnails) but...

itunes provides me with two options, a larger "convert for apple tv"
file, a smaller "convert for ipod" file if I compress all my
files to the larger apple tv specs... are they viewable on an ipod?
I would assume the answer is of course, so what are the downsides
(besides download time).

appreciate the input

[videoblogging] blip questions

2008-03-26 Thread Kathryn Jones
hey all!

building a new blip player for my site... because my show is
narrative I have always configured the player to play in reverse
chronological order, and specified via tags only the episodes, not
the post show chats, but I can't find that functionality now... am I
looking in the wrong place or has blip canned those?

also.. any word on whether blip is thinking about the live space at
all? In talks about a possible live show I would love to do it on
blip any one know if this is going to be a possibility in the
near future?

thanks all...

Re: [videoblogging] Live internet video questions and thoughts

2008-04-11 Thread Kathryn Jones
Steve!
I am working on graphics for a live show I am launching on the 21st
of this month as we speak- "The Jabbo and Crabbo Show- the artist's
(and otherwise cool person's) guide to creativity and technology on
the web"
.

while I did a far more sophisticated live broadcast last september
using three cameras mixed in real time with a tricaster pro, a crew
of 12 and cast of 8, this is a much much smaller affair, just me, my
husband our webcam (or perhaps a consumer canon) and camtwist... I
can't tell you of my experiences with camtwist yet but I am planning
on stretching it to the max, with pip, videos, slides, slugs
inbetween segments, music and more and am expecting at least 15
setups for our 45 min show which we will be mixing live as we
broadcast...working really hard here to bring the best community
experience possible to our audience... cuz you know...for many of the
reasons you mention below.. I LOVE LIVE, think there is great
potential, but also think live requires at least as much prep as taped.

eager to hear your ideas about what you want to do live

best,
Kathryn

[videoblogging] jabbo and crabbo launching tonight

2008-04-21 Thread Kathryn Jones
ok guys.. I mentioned last week that I would be launching a new live
talk show tonight... now the truth is I'm not so much of a host type
of gal, my passion for online video springs from my artistic
passions, which lean towards scripted work, however when I was
approached about creating a talk show I thought... well, while I am
still in development of my next scripted series, what can I create
that I am truly passionate about?

The answer was easy.

I am so inspired by web 2.0 technology and the way it provides even
the least technical folk like me access to creativity I personally
never could have dreamed of in the past. I'm all about taking all of
these tools... even better when they are free because of my limited
budget .. and bypassing the casting directors, the film festivals,
the investors, the art galleries... and bringing the projects I care
about directly to the world, and I would love to teach others about
all the tools I have found, and to build a community of artists of
all sorts that will support and aid one another in bringing our
creative visions to the web. So... that is what The Jabbo and Crabbo
Show is about.

Also of interest to this group.. I am using camtwist to produce our
show, its an amazing free program that turns my living room into a tv
studio... I will be talking about it on the show tonight- if you
aren't familiar with it I think you are going to be amazed at what it
can do.

I want this show to belong to the audience. I want to know what the
community wants to talk about, I want to teach the community want
they want to learn. I want the community to be actively involved in

Re: [videoblogging] wordpress: Rever/Podpress plugin conflict

2008-04-23 Thread Kathryn Jones
Hi travis,

curious why you aren't simply using podpress to play your videos?
While not my favorite wordpress plugin for vids, I'm wondering what
your are using it for (audio podcasts?) and why aren't using it for
vids...

[videoblogging] videographer for new media expo

2008-05-19 Thread Kathryn Jones
Hi guys,

My podcamp nyc co-organizer John Havens is looking for someone to
shoot and edit video of him at this years new media expo. It is a
paid gig and if you are interested I will send you all the details
off group, but in short he's looking for three hours of so of
footage, both preparing and presenting his presentation, which he
then needs edited down into a few shorts and one long vid for
promotional purposes.

Could be a great way to cover your expenses to the expo... if you
want more details let me know!

best,

Kathryn

Re: [videoblogging] Re:From Mac *TO* PC -- Should I Switch?

2008-06-09 Thread Kathryn Jones
I have to totally disagree with Tony about applecare, especially if
you have a laptop. I have had the logic board replaced, the screen
replaced, the casing replaced and two batteries replaced (pretty
evenly spread between my two years of ownership) and have paid 0
dollars. I have a first generation macbook pro 17" - so its been a
little over buggy, but even so, applecare has been more than worth
it to me with every laptop I've owned.
