Sage wisdom no doubt about it. Investing emotionally in other peoples work is
certainly something I try and do a lot. I've been starting to go to meet ups
here in L.A. and support lots of local artists but the I've been working as an
editor traditional media for a long time so it's hard to find my way.

I'm not looking for short cuts just additional roads to travel.

[videoblogging] Indy Web Series The Bindlestiffs vs. Discovery's Deadliest Catch Web spin-off

2009-04-22 Thread M.J. Loheed
Howdy, I was wondering if folks in the group might have some thoughts on
generating vote turn out for web competitions. I don't mean to directly plug my
project but more to ask what techniques folks with blogs and web series have
used to help overcome apathy of our viewers.

My web series "The Bindlestiffs" www.thebindlestiffs.com has been nominated
for a Webby Award (Divsion: Online Film & Video Category: Reality). One of
the other nominees in the category is "Deadliest Catch: Real Dutch" a web spin
off of Discovery Channel's popular show. Our nominations make us eligible for a
people's voice award and right now we're running in 2nd behind Deadliest with
about 1/2 as many votes.

To have been nominated at all is quite a feather in our cap considering every
other nominee in the category (and many more who were'nt nominated) was funded
by much larger corporations than myself. Of course, Discovery has enormous PR
power compared to us so we're trying everything we know to stay competitive
(Facebook, Twitter, e-mails).

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Wow, thanks for the kudos. Hopefully the project will bring more
interest to The Bindlestiffs live show too; which ultimately is the
goal. I got one direct mail from Schlomo Rabinowitz which I'm going to
reprint here. Because I think it's very insightful about things I can do
to make it a better Web based show:

Hey there, I've been a long time fan of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus!!
This was great!

But its not a blog. What you have is a video on a page. You should have
comments.

You should at least have someway to keep in touch with the circus. Like
an email notifier for the next epidsode (and to even learn about the
next time they are in my town!)

You should also have an RSS feed so I can just download it into iTunes
(make a free one at Feedburner and it'll put it in the itunes store for
you)

If there is no connection/communication between me and the act, whats
the point of putting it on the web? Again, I wanted to say I actually
have seen the act and liked the video.

I'm definitely looking forward to more.

[videoblogging] "The Bindlestiffs" A Produced VideoBlog?

2008-08-06 Thread M.J. Loheed
Hey everyone I'm a new to video blogging and I'm kind of looking to
migrate away from my current career as a reality TV editor.

I wanted to create a video series that was part blog but also
"produced" so that it had a very finished look and feel to it. I guess
like many things on the web it isn't purely a video blog nor is it an
attempt to make TV fit on the web. It's simply me trying to use my day
job skills to help someone else tell their story.

The result is "The Bindlestiffs" a webcast about the real life trials
and tribulations of The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. I'm posting the
link, not to promote it here, but to ask does anyone know of other
video-blogs doing something similar to this? Production-wise or
story-wise?

www.thebindlestiffs.com

I'm curious to see if anything else like this is being done. Because
I'd like to check it out and see if I can make my efforts more effective.

Thanks!

M.J.

[videoblogging] Re: How to promote videos?

2008-08-06 Thread M.J. Loheed
Hey Felipe,

I'm new video blogger and I'm in the same boat. I'm trying to create a
reality series for the web and I'm having a difficult time locating
good spots to mention my series, get a review, or even indulge a
shameless plug. There's so much online video now that it seems
difficult to locate one good clearinghouse of online video reviews.
Especially as more viewers are migrating to the web on their lunch hour.
