Re: [videoblogging] Re: Controlling Your Feed

2008-01-25 Thread Tim Street
I've been very happy with Feedburner but I often think, What if I
sold one of my online properties to a competitor of Feedburner? or
What if one of my feeds at Revver or Youtube became more popular than
my own feed?

How could that effect the sale of my online property because I don't
control those users.

The Apple iTunes Store uses my feeds and I like that. It makes me all
warm and fuzzy inside.

I wonder if Mr. or Ms. Epic FU have any thoughts on this?

They have feeds in several places.

 Hi Tim,

Every major video hosting site gives you a MediaRSS feed when you
create an account (some advertise it more than others).

YouTube and Blip have great feeds. I know a lot of people on this list
prefer their Feedburner feed. Unfortunately, Feedburner feeds have
lagged behind for video (the feeds use MediaRSS poorly, often have
problems with thumbnails, etc.). Media RSS feeds have gotten a lot
more robust and Feedburner has lagged behind in this area (probably
due to the fact that they focus on bloggers).

That said, I can understand that Feedburner provides statistics and
more control over what and how posts are syndicated (including
advertising / ways to make money). We've thought about providing an
alternative to Feedburner, but it is a much different focus than what
we are currently working on (Video Search). I wonder what others
think? Are you happy with Feedburner?

 Frank

Do other video hosting sites create new feeds or do they link to
 the

Yes, pretty much every video site has their own feeds. This is
  commonplace.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Controlling Your Feed

2008-01-25 Thread Sull
Great points, Frank.
I have recently encouraged vloggers to use their own feeds or if a blip
user, to use blip feeds.
My point is that feedburner filled a void a few years back and that was
great but their is little reason to depend on them these days.
Frank is right about their feed quality. It's really not very tight and
focused on media creators in my opinion.
The reason why many people still use them is because they have subscribers
that are using feedburner urls instead of their own urls.
Their is an obvious issue of inconveniencing and possibly losing
subscribers. But i say if you want to do things right, you need to do that
sooner than later.

I've emphasized this a bit to the SIAB group since their is so much
focus on taking control of your content, your data, your show.
Right now, their is little focus on feeds but that's an area of focus of
mine so we'll see.

As far as a new service to do feeds right for media creators... I don't
know. I've thought about it myself but good adoption rates are hard to
get. Mefeedia could garner the support needed to make it viable but I
wouldnt expect a flood of new users. Still to this day, people are not
concerned about having rich data feeds with proper media RSS. Wordpress
still doesnt support things out of the box. Blip has the best feeds that i
have seen.

My opinion is to use your own feeds (obviously might need some help getting
that right) and second choice is to use the blip.tv service.
Feedburner should be phased out this year.
