Re: [Videolib] self distribution

2012-08-30 Thread Judith Dancoff
Nahum--This post seems contradictory. You began helping filmmakers
distribute their films because you had good results self-distributing your
own films, then state that self-distribution is not worthwhile for
filmmakers. You are a filmmaker, I presume, and it was worthwhile for
you, else you wouldn't have began your company.

The essential take-away is that self-distribution is doable, is not
rocket-science, and after the initial push to establish an effective sales
platform, takes remarkably little effort, even if one continues a campaign
for years.

[Videolib] self distribution

2012-08-30 Thread nahum laufer
I started self-distributing a film I made with my son Erez Laufer "The
Darien Dilemma" back in 2005, and went on with a second film "Rafting to
Bombay" 2009 we had good results so other filmmakers asked me to distribute
their films.
So was born "Docs for Education"
Is self distribution worthwhile for a film-maker, NO, unless you have a
father/mother that does it as a hobby as I do.

Hello CW,

I have a faculty member who made a film and is trying to get distribution.
It's been in festivals, and he has it for sale on Amazon, but he was hoping
to get a bit more play out of it with universities, libraries, museums
because it hits so many disciplines.

My thoughts were getting distributors that focus on schools that purchase
educational films, such as Kino, Docurama, maybe Microcinema. Also,
contacting each one of the more independent distributors.

Hi Lorraine,

I know John McLean Media has carried this title for about 5 years. Is John only
handling television? Is there any other current distribution other than Amazon?
It is harder to get distribution the more a title has already been exploited.
Plus the $40 price point presents a problem.

I'd say you are correct to pursue distributor's such as Kino. Look at the
National Media Market exhibiting partners for other options. Midwest, etc.
typically will not purchase from an individual or entity selling a single title.

Good luck,
Bob

Defintiely Slap Shot. Also, perhaps: Eight Men Out and Semi-Tough, both of
which spill over into other Pop Culture themes.

For pop music I'd suggest adding Get Crazy, which lampoons several genres of
pop music, and Rock 'n' Roll High School, just because I still like the
Ramones-- not to mention the idea of blowing up one's high school.

>From my perspective as a film distribution consultant, I find that with the
advent of the internet, a lot of filmmakers are branching out to
do-it-themselves, or are hiring consultants to do-it-themselves in their
place. One can also strike a middle ground. For example, I often set my
clients up with a strong DIY platform and walk them through the first
campaign, preparing them to take over down the road.

Academic DIY is different from placing your film with an academic
distributor in that the percentage taken by the consultant is a lot less
and the method very different. While a distributor essentially puts you in
a catalogue that buyers use to make a purchase, diy distribution will put
your film front and center with targeted email campaigns for several
campaign cycles--basically for as long as the film sells. Some
distributors will also do this, but only while the film is a new release.
Thus DIY is ultimately more successful at the number of films it can place
and more lucrative to the filmmaker.

You can find an article I wrote about the process in the spring issue of
the IDA magazine:
http://www.documentary.org/magazine/getting-your-film-ready-school-it
’s-academic-diy

The blog on my website also has several entries that speak to this directly.

Hi

Wow! Big task! Sorta depends on the slant of the class, I think. There
have been movies made on these themes throughout the history of film...I
your prof looking for strictly contemporary, older? The view of pop
culture phenomena and artifacts as represented in the movies shifts
radically over time.

In any case:

For advertising (particularly Mad Men-resonate advertising), you could
consider

The Hucksters (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0039477/)
Lover Come Back (1961) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055100/

Elia Kazan's Face in the Crowd is a terrific early indictment of
television's potential for fostering demogoguery

Bye Bye Birdie is sort of cool for both its gentle send-up of rock n' roll
and TV (not to mention teenagers)

Network and Broadcast News are good movie looks at TV. The Truman Show
would also be good

I'll leave sports to Jessica

Re: [Videolib] thoughts on distribution

2012-08-30 Thread Tatar, Becky
I'm nowhere near knowledgeable about this, but I have had several people in the
past ask me how to get their films to a bigger audience. I recommended that
they submit their films to Booklist, Library Journal and Video Librarian for
review. They might not review it, but if they did, a lot of librarians would
see it. Also, see if any of the major distributors - Midwest, B&T, AEC, etc,
would carry it. It looks interesting, and the few reviews on Amazon were very
positive. And, it doesn't cost an arm or two legs!

Subject: [Videolib] thoughts on distribution

Hello CW,

I have a faculty member who made a film and is trying to get distribution.
It's been in festivals, and he has it for sale on Amazon, but he was hoping to
get a bit more play out of it with universities, libraries, museums because it
hits so many disciplines.

My thoughts were getting distributors that focus on schools that purchase
educational films, such as Kino, Docurama, maybe Microcinema. Also, contacting
each one of the more independent distributors.

Here is the link, so you can see what I'm talking about
http://humanities.case.edu/media/eventGuides/191_Frederick_Lewis_Guide.pdf
Reading this may lead you to think he 'should' know what he's doing, but I
think this particular film is his baby, and he wants it to get more play.

I realize we are not distributors, but I wondered if you had any sage or even
unsage advice you could offer. It would be greatly appreciated. Please let me
know if I overstepped my bounds here.

Thanks a lot

There are so many choices:

Sports -- I'd go with Miracle because it is a good film and it also covered
huge popular culture moment.
Advertising -- I can not think of any beyond the ones mentioned by Elizabeth.
Popular Music -- For pure cheese factor but it did highlight a time in our
history "Thank God It's Friday" It may be disco, but remember, those who do
not learn about the past are doomed to repeat it.
Technology -- I can't think of the title, but there was a movie with Greg
Kinear who played a person who came up with windshield wiper technology that
was supposed to be pretty good.
Movies -- Singin' in the rain; the entrenchment of the studio system with the
dawn of the talkies. A fantastic movie to boot.
