[Videolib] advice on streaming feature film situation - FOLLOW UP Q
Hello again everyone, Thank you so much for your advice on streaming films for an online cinema studies class. The Asst Deans here at Ohio U agree that we should provide the streaming access to the list of titles that the faculty has chosen. Some of the titles are available via MEF, some titles I can get through Swank Digital, but there are 4 titles that are not available for streaming (using canistreamit.it or gowatchit.com). Just curious if we have to deal with these 4 titles on a title by title basis? Or is there an 'organization' or third party that can negotiate these remaining titles? While I'm at it, let me send you the 4 titles I am having difficulty with, perhaps some of you know who we contact to discover if streaming is an option: Alejandro G InárrituBabel (2006) OWN ON DVD AVAIL FOR STREAM VIA VARIOUS VENDORS Anayansi Prado Maid in America (2004) OWN ON DVD Contact filmmaker: Anayansi Prado impactofi...@hotmail.com Courtney HuntFrozen River (2008) OWN ON DVD NOT AVAIL FOR STREAM Nancy Savoca Dirt (2003) OWN THE DVDcontact filmmaker: Nancy Savoca n...@cine-si.com Thanks again, for all your wonderful insight. This is the big problem with streaming especially for feature films. There are a huge number that are not available especially foreign and indie films. You basically have to track them down one by one and to be honest I strongly suspect on the foreign ones the rights holder will say no or simply want an insane amount of money. Streaming is of course a specific right in a contract and you will often find cases where the company that has the film on DVD does not have the streaming rights. As a practical matter not every film and not even remote majority of films made are going to be available for streaming. I would do your best to track down the rights holders but again they may well say no which is not as mean as it sounds. If you are asking a rights holder in France to stream a movie they have not even sold rights for in the US to stream it for a college they are pretty likely to say no. Indie filmmakers may be more friendly but quote a high price. Sometimes the professor is just going to have to find another title Confused re BABEL. You say multiple venders but can't get streaming? It was a Paramount Vantage release. Paramount titles are now at Criterion Pictures USA but I think they can't do streaming yet. Also the rights may have expired and reverted back to the original owner in Europe but I would check with Criterion. [Videolib] Distributor posts to VideoLib
Distributors, please note: While I am not the moderator of VideoLib, I have in the past week sent reminders to two distributors that VideoLib is not the forum for posting announcements of new titles. I have done this off-list so as not to target or embarrass the distributors who have so posted. Gary Handman remained fairly vigilant on this matter, in order to both promote the use of VideoNews as the appropriate (and opt-in) forum for such announcements, and to keep this list clear for discussion of important matters (Such as Since I have the DVD I'm going to rip it to stream. That's legal, right? and The Cubs really are the worst baseball team ever, amiright?) So that everyone can benefit: VideoLib is devoted to the exchange of information and discussion of issues related to library video collection development and management. While a distributor post would be appropriate in response to a list member asking for suggestions or recommendations of videos on specific topics, an announcement of a specific film or films on its own it is not appropriate for this list. Announcements and/or promotion of new titles should be directed to the parallel discussion list: VideoNews. VideoNews was established for this specific purpose, to direct announcements of new titles, and to keep them off the VideoLib discussion list. [Videolib] The horrible locking DVD case question again
To the collective wisdom of the group, We are having a not fun time with our Alpha Nexpac Secure DVD cases, these are the ones with the blue bar that you have to unlock with a black key bar. The blue bars are getting stuck and breaking apart. We are looking at changing over to the Amary II Benefit Denial DVD case from Demco, this one has a central hub removal. Right now when the model is brand new it is so much easier to take the lock off. The questions of course; 1. Do the locks age badly as they do with the Alpha Nexpac? 2. Do people like these Amary cases in general? 3. Is there a much better system that we should be looking at? We hope to hear from librarians rather than vendors SVP! :) Thanks much Kate Montgomery County Community College is proud to be designated as an Achieving the Dream Leader College for its commitment to student access and success. Sorry-as I was saying... The all enclosed case does not sit well on the shelves as it is bottom heavy.
