Another suggestion would be Fred Zinnemann's classic film *The Nun's
Story*, which is

about a nun who is in a nursing order.

Anyone have suggestions for films that portray nurses, both good and
bad? A faculty member is looking for films for undergraduate nursing
students to compare and contrast core values, professionalism, and
comportment with representations of nurses/nursing in film media. I
think she's interested in both feature films and documentaries. Your
help is greatly appreciated. I'd be happy to post the resulting list

Re: [Videolib] nurses in film

2013-05-22 Thread Steven Ladd
The Video Project just released a film called NURSES - IF FLORENCE COULD SEE US
NOW.

Here's an excerpt from the description:

NURSES - IF FLORENCE COULD SEE US NOW offers a unique look into the complex and
challenging world of being a nurse, exploring the many different roles that
nurses play and their areas of practice, from the bedside to the board room,
and the many ways that nurses impact the lives of others.

Filmed on location in 10 states across the country, more then 70 nurses are
featured from hospitals, clinics, business, nursing schools and nursing
associations, including bedside nurses, nurse practitioners, public health
nurses, nurse educators and nurse leaders, among them the Corporate CNO of
Kaiser Permanente and the CEO and President of the American Nurses Association.

More details and trailer here:

http://www.videoproject.com/nurses.html

And happy to offer an online preview, if that's helpful.

Hello,

I actually made a short clip compilation film that was shown at a nursing
conference held at our university. I tried to combine good and bad
portrayals as well as tell a story along the way.

I'd be happy to send you a copy if you are interested.

I used clips from the following:

The English Patient
MASH
Good Night, Nurse
High Anxiety
The White Angel
Misery
The Lost Weekend
Angels in America
Meet the Parents
Carry On Nurse
The Young Nurses
Candy Strip Nurses
Night Call Nurses
The Student Nurses
Hellcats of the Navy
Sister Kenny
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
A Farewell to Arms
The Tall Guy
Kill Bill, Vol. 1
Wit
Nurse Betty
Night Nurse
Yes, Nurse! No Nurse!

This was made before Nurse Jackie started airing, I would include that show
too if I were to redo it. There are lots more.

Best,

Phil Hallman

Subject: [Videolib] nurses in film

Anyone have suggestions for films that portray nurses, both good and bad? A
faculty member is looking for films for undergraduate nursing students to
compare and contrast core values, professionalism, and comportment with
representations of nurses/nursing in film media. I think she's interested in
both feature films and documentaries. Your help is greatly appreciated. I'd be
happy to post the resulting list if anyone's interested. THANKS.

Many good suggestions already.

But let's not forget Glenn Close's first major film appearance as Jenny
Garp, in The World According to Garp (I just happened to have read it
recently)

Jean Marsh (of Upstairs Downstairs and early Twilight Zone fame) appears
as a nurse in the Wizard of Oz sequel: Return to Oz

Kira Muratova's film Three Stories (Tri istorii) has a prominent role for a
nurse (as a cold blooded murderer) in the second story. Very dark.

Re: [Videolib] nurses in film

2013-01-02 Thread Paul Coleman
THE YOUNG DOCTORS (1961) has an interesting early scene in which a class of
nursing students is given a lesson in endurance (by a wise, kindly, and
mordantly humorous Fredric March) at an autopsy. One of the students goes on to
become the love interest of a doctor played by Ben Gazzara. The film might be
useful as a portrayal of increasingly respectful yet still somewhat
patronizing, gender-charged attitudes toward nurses in the evolving early
sixties.
