These "tone diallers" were/are also popular with what alot of people call
'hackers' as some types (most notoriously the Radio Shack ones) can be
re-crystalled and then used to defraud the coin tolling system used in
American payphones. Such a modified device is called a "red box".

Unfortunately, the 'bot doesn't respond to DTMF tones, rather it responds to
single and compund tones in the 1000-2800Hz range. If I can find a tone
generation util, I'll try it, otherwise I'll just have to substitute my PC's
Creative AWE-32.

Also, IIRC, HyperCard 1.(something) could also be used to dial a phone
number directly trough the modem. In this case you could hook up your rotary
phone (Geez, I'm 18 and I remember these) and your Plus' modem in series and
enjoy Mac controlled DTMF. Neat.

Cheers,
Adam.

Weren't they called blue boxes? Or was that something else?

I remember in my BBS days, I used a DOS terminal program called Terminate.
In its preferences somewhere was a tone generator. I have no idea what it
was supposed to be for, but it could be set to the hertz, and played out the
otherwise worthless PC speaker. Was fun to bug the dogs next door with. :)

Don't worry about it, I'm 19 and *use* a rotary phone.

I'm working in an elementary school that uses IIci's and some IIcx's
partnered with one newer iMac per classroom. We'd LOVE to be able to cram
8.5.1 on a group of turbo 601's packed neatly inside those dudes, if you're

Heh, I'm 30 and remember when there was ONE style
of phone available, supplied by "Ma Bell". They
had about 3 colors to choose from. They were rented,
not sold. Eventually, if you wanted, you could
buy your own phones, but they still had the same old
Ma Bell supplied innards. Finally the companies
that wanted to make their own complete phones got
the government to make the telcos allow equipment
not supplied by them to be connected to the phone
system. Of course that all happened in the 1970's
before you were born. ;) When that change happened,
magazines like Popular Science ran articles on all
the neat custom phones you could now buy.

Up until about a week or so ago, my grandmother (who is 76) was STILL
renting her phone! I didn't even know that was still possible! And I was
kind of pissed off to hear that the phone company would have the audacity to
continue charging her for it - she's been renting the thing since the 60's,
for godsake! I think they were just taking advantage of a little old lady.
But anyway, she finally got a new phone (which she bought, but still had to
have a man from the phone company come install, because her house has all
the old-style wiring and jacks) a few days ago, after her 30+ year old one
went kaput.

I think anytime a company fails to notify people about things they should
have to refund the money back to when the law was passed plus interest. If
things like that happened they would get more ethical and honest. Its like
MicroJunk upgrades before they almost drove Word Perfect and others out of
business they had reasonable upgrades and now their new "Open License" scam
will drive it up even higher- When will people learn to just dump the
gougers and go with Apple and the software companies that have supported
them all these years, Including Myself a sad and Frustrated forced
WintelDosbox user.

The Bell companies notified their customers of the option to buy
phones rather than rent. If someone choices to continue renting the
phone, why should they refused the profit?

Ah, boxen. I have a beige box (aka lineman's handset) here at home that I
built myself. I read a bunch about the other colours of boxen but never
really did much with them. The Whacked Mac archives used to have a load of
.txts about boxen, how to build each one, and what they all did.

The hard part is re-wiring the plug. Doing the mod inside the monitor
itself is simple and sufficiently detailed already.

18 anymore. I have socks that are that oldhehehehe I remember having that
wonderful old Western Electric rotary dial phone when I was growing up. I also
remember having a black and white tv. Kids today have it so easy.color tv,
computers, satellite.when I was a kid we didn't even have calculators and we
walked 5 miles to school every dayuphill both ways.
God Bless,
Rick

Showing you age there. :) Of course I show my age, 32, when I
remember going to Safeway and checking your TV's tubes in the tube
checker. The 70s what an interesting decade, Vietnam, disco, Jimmy
Carter, and the change in TVs from black and white to color and from
tubes to solid state. My era is the Reagan era, the 80s, home to
parachute pants and the CD. Nope, nostaglia doesn't work for me. lol

Quicken on a Mac

2001-08-07 Thread Wllms88

I'm late getting to the digest so if this has been answered I'm sorry. I use
Quicken on a IIcx and a IIsi with no problems. However; I use an older
version. It works very well for myself. I got it off a Performa CD on E bay
for a buck.

Have a good day all.

OK, how about a hand cranked battery powered phone with which you
contacted "Central" to get a line out of the neighborhood? Yeah, in the
'50s in rural Oregon.

Now I sit here playing with a 4 machine home network (6100s, 6300s and a
'doze box) with a DSL line. Oh the times, they are a changin'.

I had a 10" black and white TV for years. My family
had two calculators, one with a green vacuum
fluorescent display that used two AA bateries and
one with a red LED display that used 4 AA batteries.
They cost almost $100 each in the late 70's.
The neat bit is they're real easy to use in the dark.
(Yes, they're small enough to hold in one hand.)
Matter of fact my folks still have them and they
still work perfectly! Let's see how many of today's
calculators are still going in 25 years. ;)

I rode the bus to school, and it was uphill both
ways. Of course my house was at the top of
one hill and the school was at the top of another
about 2.5 miles away. ;)

Oh yeah, that was fun. Helping dad pull tubes out
of the old console color TV and taking them all
down to the hardware store to see which ones were
bad or "iffy". A television used to be considered
a piece of furniture by itself, usually in a fine
furniture grade varnished wood cabinet with folding,
sliding or tambour doors. My dad liked theirs so
much he gutted the two identical cabinets, sawed
the legs off one, stacked them and put a new
"plastic fantastic" 25" stereo TV in the top one
with the VCR and satellite boxes in the bottom.
