Unfortunately Apple developed a/ux for only a subset of machines made - mainly those that could be used as servers, which leaves out every powerbook (even with FPUs). The ability to run on the hardware isn't there. Same with the 660AV and 840AVs with their different architecture. The relevant bit from the FAQ though, is: G.02) What's the minimum system I need (CPU, disk and RAM) to run A/UX? A/UX 3.0 works on the MacII (with PMMU _or_ 68030 upgrade with FDHD ROM's installed), IIx, IIcx, IIci, IIfx, SE/30, IIsi (with 68882 chip) and the Quadra 700|900|950 computers. A/UX 3.0.1 (and later) adds support for the Q800 and Centris Machines (the Centrises _must_ have the real 68040 w/FPU - See QA #G.03). A/UX will run on the Quadra 610 and 650s (recall that A/UX requires the _real_ 68040 chip!) with a little bit of work. A/UX will NOT run on the PowerMacs, any AV machines, any PowerBooks (or portables), the LCs, the Duos, the ClassicII, the Q605 or on the Quadra 630... It is recommended that you NOT run A/UX 3.1.1 on the II, IIx, IIcx or SE/30 machines, since their MacOS-compatibility is unreliable under 3.1.1. Recall that A/UX _is_ UNIX and thus contains some very hardware specific drivers. It's for this reason (and not Apple not doing things correctly) that A/UX won't work on newly released platforms. To support a new platform, at least _some_ work (and possibly extensive work in some cases) must be done. be well :) dana -- http://www.danamania.com/ -- -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Sound and the LC
Hello - I recently rescued an old LC. It works great, except for the sound. When I first started checking the LC out it was running 6.0.7 and the sound was very low, but audible. I upgraded to System 7.1, which gave me a sound control panel. I opened the sound control and had to adjust the slide bar to the top to hear any of the sounds. I tried hooking up external speakers, and about all that I could hear was the hum. What do I need to do to get my LC (plain LC by the way) to play sounds? My initial intention is to use it as a kids' game machine, so sound is pretty important! Thanks. Mike -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Sound and the LC
Greetings, Marten, You observed: I just checked out the sound on one of my LCs, also running 7.1. The behavior of the system I checked is consistent with your description. I needed to use amplified (powered) speakers to get a significant sound volume. Have you tried powered speakers? Also, be sure that the sound port contacts are clean and that the plug for the speakers is clean. Good luck. Isn't this about the case with any Mac or personal computer? Don't you always need powered speakers to get a decent sound? Nope. I've used a mix of powered and unpowered speakers on my Wintel and Linux boxes with SoundBlaster and ESS sound cards. I think it may have something to do with the features of the particular card: some cards have separate speaker and line-out ports; some have a single, combined speaker/line-out port. I've got a low-end PC (P200MMX, 64M, Win95) that I use for teaching; it's got a generic ESS card with a combined audio-out port that drives a pair of small, unpowered speakers just fine. Another Wintel machine (AMD K6/233, 96M, Win98) drives a pair of unpowered Infinity speakers through a SoundBlaster 16 ISA PnP card. But the next box over, a Red Hat Linux 7.2 system on the same type chasis as the Win95 box but with the same sound card as the Win98 box needs amplified speakers (Altec Lansing ACS5). You figure it out, 'cause I sure can't. insert puzzled Smiley here Sp00ky -- Spiritus ex Machina No matter how paranoid you are, it isn't paranoid enough. -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
