Bugbear virus and LEM lists

2003-03-10 Thread Dan Knight
A former member of the PCI PowerMacs list was alerted to the presence of
a virus on a message purportedly sent from pci-powermacs. He emailed the
following:

This morning I received an email (apparantly) from
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Our virus scanning software, carefully updated by our professional
paranoids, alerted me to the fact that it contained a bugbear a virus in
an attachment (filename cotter.dat.scr)

The email message itself seems real enough, until you look at the dates;
look at the bottom of this mail.

A little research on the bugbear virus turns up the following:

1. It installs itself in the Startup folder of any version of Windows
later than 3.1.

2. It attempts to use any SMTP (email sending) resources on the infected
computer to create mass mailings.

3. It attempts to install itself on other computers on the network.

4. It attempts to create a backdoor on the infected computer that the
worm's creator could use to access the computer in the future.

5. It will send emails from safe looking bogus email addresses (such as
[EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of @maclaunch.com) to addresses it
finds. It also seems to quote part of an email from that user ID to make
the message look more authentic.

You may be tipped off by a strange date, an unusual return address, or
your virus checker going off (Windows users should always run virus
checking -- users with other operating systems cannot be infected by this
and most other viruses).

These messages are not from our lists or our server; the bugbear worm can
only be propagated by Windows computers. However, at first glance they
may appear to come from us, so Windows users should be careful when
checking list messages.

And we can all wonder when Microsoft is going to get serious about secure
computing. The level of insecurity that gave birth to tens of thousands
of worms and viruses in simply unacceptable, yet over 90% of all computer
users take it in stride as something normal they have to deal with.

Thank goodness we only use Macs for production and *nix servers for our
site and mailing lists.

Unfortunately they think anything computer related is expensive and thus tax
the crap out of it. They don't seem to pull this crap when you order stuff

Customs charges (Was: Anybody know the schematic...)

I don't know how Canada is different from the UK but the UK customs
service can hurt too. It appears to be pretty random with my purchases
as to whether I am charged VAT (purchase tax) on goods from the US or
Canada. One week a parcel with a declared value of $150 US is delivered
without a VAT claim; next week the postman knocks in the morning to ask
for duty on a $30 US purchase, which adds roughly $10 US for customs
handling and $5 US for VAT. Overall, I think it works out that I am
charged about 40% of the time for imports but value does not appear to
be a determining factor. Surface shipped goods are inspected but I
never seem to get charged; air mail goods are never opened but I always
end up paying.

Yes, annoying, isn't it?

Microsoft has decided to change yet another standard
to how they want. Starting with Win2K MS decided that
all media with a sub 32 megabyte formatted size would
be done as FAT12 with a 512 byte block size.
Jolly fun, eh? Especially when the various .orgs that
establish standards for SmartMedia, Memory Stick,
Compact Flash, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, etc
decided that the rule would be FAT16 for the smallest
media up to at least 512 meg. Fortunately for Windows
users, WinMe respects the proper standards for smaller
media. (About the only thing WinMe is good for.)

How this relates to Macintosh is that the Classic
Mac OS and System can only work with FAT12 on PC
formatted 720K and 1.44M floppy disks, as far as
I've been able to tell in my limited testing.
If I had a 20 to 40 meg SCSI hard drive and an old
8088 PC with a SCSI controller I'd load up DOS 2.1
and format it with ye olde FAT12 then see if any of
my Macs can mount it.

of the several things I have ordered/receieved from the US one so far
has had the customs forms filled out correctly. They generally stick you
with a handling fee on top of it as well.

It's the same here, except Canada calls VAT GST. The case I was dealing with
the person who sent the item to me filled out teh customs form as
Computer stuff did not check it as a gift. I paid the shipping for the item
about 10 bucks, then approx 10 bucks for handling, then 8% GST on there
assumed value.

Now I could gripe about the assumed value, but then it will go immediately
to the
aging centre where I will now have to wait till Christmas for them decide a
more
appropriate value for the item.

They don't seem to tag you so hard on stuff from Europe, especially the UK.
Stuff from
the states is always the worst. Out of everything I have ordered/received
from the
I've gotten like one thing with the customs form filled out correctly. Then
to add fire
to fire, ever since 11 of Sept. the customs people have gone from nailing
you around
40% of the time to nailing you about 70% of the time. I've gotten to the
point where
I just avoid getting anything from the US unless I have no other choice.

Import duties. Re: Anybody know the schematic to build local talk cables

A value is assessed then the customs department levies
an import duty on it, unless the item was produced
in the country you're importing it to.

Many european and other countries impose a 100% duty
on imported electronic devices or computers, some
also apply it even to parts or sub-assemblies.

Until 1992, Brazil had a total ban on computer
imports.
(And apple's stupid mis-handling of the situation
lost them a huge market in Brazil, post 1992.)
