SE battery
Does anyone know how to change an SE battery that's soldiered in? Is there a way to change it so it doesn't have to be soldiered to the board? In order to apply as little heat to the board as possible, I clipped the battery leads as close to the battery as I could, then soldered the new battery leads to the old ones. Be sure to note the polarity of the old battery before cutting it loose! Ken -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Jackhammer SCSI termination issues, Part II (long post)
Hi, I had posted earlier to the list about SCSI termination in a Mac IIfx with a newly-installed Jackhammer card. I finally got a hard drive to work with the Jackhammer card by removing the two 8-bit terminator jumpers off the card. I still have a problem. If I hook up an external SCSI device (with or without termination) the system will see the external drive but will not boot. If I try to put in a System floppy the computer does not boot up either. This situation exists as long as the Jackhammer card is installed but goes away once removed. With the jumper pins in the card the computer will not bootMy configuration is as follows: Internal drive: 50-pin Seagate Barracuda 2.2 GB (two partions under System 7.1) ID set at 7 by Jackhammer Control Panel with a single SCSI ribbon cable connecting the card to the drive. 2 Jumper Pins set to TE (Termination Enabled) and another one for termination power FROM the bus. This configuration allows the internal drive to boot up. Alternatively the second jumper can be set for termination TO the bus and termination FROM the drive. External HD: LaCie 2.2 SCSI ID 2 with internal termination switch-selectable. As soon as the external cable is connected to the IIfx (with Jackhammer installed) the SilverLining indicator appears but the computer fails to go further than that on startup. Termination on or off on the drive makes no difference. So...what am I missing to make this thing work with external devices? Thanks!! -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I don't necessarily have a full answer for you, but...you *DO* know that the IIfx had totally unique and decidedly peculiar SCSI, right? In situations where you would normally use a standard grey terminator, you have to use special IIfx-specific black terminators (and have fun finding any!). It's a byproduct of some chips they used back then to get very fast bus speed - technologies that Apple subsequently abandoned. Are the drive's ID jumpers also set to 7? Macs were designed to look first for booting off ID 0. Another issue I've had with Macs is they tend to have issues (sometimes quite nasty ones like not booting or data corruption) if you use different formatters and drivers on different drives. Format everything SCSI with the same program to eliminate potential problems. Got any drives on the motherboard SCSI? ISTR there could be problems with using the same SCSI ID's for drives on the built in and on certain NuBus SCSI cards. = It will be total Fandemonium, Summer 2005! It's a byproduct of some chips they used back then to get very fast bus speed - technologies that Apple subsequently abandoned. At some point in the IIfx production, the SCSI issues were corrected completely. (Unlike the SCSI issues with NuBus Powermacs. G.) The IIfx I/O stuff was also used on the Quadra 900/950 and didn't have the SCSI problems but like the IIfx, did have troubles with some apps incompatable with the faster serial operation. That's why there's the Serial Switch control panel that's only for those three Macs. = It will be total Fandemonium, Summer 2005!
