Re: LCII acquisition

2001-09-06 Thread Andrew W. Hill

Hello. I just bought an LCII for no other reason than because
it was so-o-o cute! I think that it has a 60 MG hard drive and
4 MG of RAM, according to the ìget infoî and ìabout this macî
folders. My 14-year old thought he would be able to play
Escape Velocity on it. However, the game requires 6.5 MG of
RAM to run. According to the ìcharts,î I believe that this
computer can hold 10 MG of RAM. Is that correct?

Buy my Quadra 605. You'll be much happier. You can put 136MB of RAM
in it, and can be overclocked to a 33MHz 68040. Its only $10...

You just have to format it with a non-Apple hard disk utility, or

Someone just gave me their llci complete with Apple High Res (HA) RGB
monitor, keyboard II, mouse, and Laserwriter LS. Everything works
perfectly. Anyone know the value of this setup? I was thinking it's
probably not worth much so I was going to donate it but need to know the
value. Thanks.

You want a valuation for the tax office? $50-$75 total. You give a
reasonable price on those, not rock bottom

Basically a IIci system is $25+ and the laser printer is $25-$50.
Reasonable value. I'd pay $10 tops for that, but only cause I'm
short a fuser.

Re: Education Software for 68030 Macs.From: A.Tuazon

2001-08-31 Thread Andrew W. Hill

  and I'm looking
mostly at the interactive readers like Reader Rabbit or fairy tales or
anything of that sort. Math software will also do just fine.

My daughter regularly uses Reader Rabbits Kindergarten as well as a couple
of Jump Start and Broderbund educational CDs. They all require a 68040
however. By and large they run well on an 040 and she has fun as well as
learns a bit. I bought most of it in the '98-'99 time frame.

Your post made me curious as to whether there might be older versions (like
for a 68030). A quick check of Ebay using broderbund as a keyword turned
up quite a bit.

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=1269866297

Here's the first one I checked. It said it requires a 68030 (25 MHz or
better). Even though you IIsi runs at 20 MHz, I suspect it would work just
fine. A couple of the CDs that I have require a 68040 at 40 MHz, but work
just fine at 33 MHz. Some of the interactive game stuff might just be a
touch slow at times. These things sell cheaply enough on ebay that it's
probably worth taking a chance on.

Clockchip the IIsi to 25MHz. Its apparently pretty easy and works well.

Got a stack of thirty compacts that my aunt made me put a sheet over
when she stayed cause she thought they looked like evil marching
soldiers. Stack of five Centris 610s in various order, don't even
ask about the LCs. My desk currently has five computers hooked into
it. Three monitors, two keyboards, a 12port ethernet hub, CDRW, MO,
DAT, Zip, copy of Hogg's Justified Sinner and about 30 CDs of *nix

I guess for my mom's sake I should add that most of the above is for sale.

For once, Jag and I agree. Frames suck. I can't think of a single

broadly supported.

I happen to like frames. In some cases, it can dramatically reduce
the amount of data that needs to be transmitted. A table based
layout requires the download of the sidebar every time. Wait until I
finish up JMUG. Theres a section there that without frames or CSS
we'd run out of bandwidth real quick. I went for frames for support

Re: LCIII+

What is the best program to format a new drive, or re-format an old drive.?

Can someone give me a detailed description of the process from scratch?

You'll want to use Hard Disk Speed Tools. Basically its a point and
click thing. Select the drive you want to format from a list, and
hit the Format button.

I have an existing 250 MB drive with the OS 7.1 and programs on it - how do
I get all of that over to a new hard drive after it's been formatted?

Do you have an external case?

Nope, no external case, except one with a syquest drive and one with a 600e.
Can they be used temporarily?

Maybe not the Syquest. Those are hard to get out. The 600e,
totally. Thats an easy pull.
Drop it into the 600e's case and just copy straight across. I
recommend that you install the OS and Programs using the original

Would someone please tell me the difference between PS 2.5 and 2.5.1? I
want to use 2.5 in some vintage Macs but don't know what the .1 update
enabled and whether that would even have a bearing on what I want to do.
I don't have the updater and haven't found any decent info on it.

Most likely stability and reliability. Possibly speed. Thats
usually what a tertiary level update is. Only added features would
be extremely minor.

What about those MediaVision PAS-16 sound cards for the LC slot? National

Sorry, should have specified that I was guessing.

The extra pins widen the expansion bus to 32bits. I've never

Re: Classic Battery

2001-07-27 Thread Andrew W. Hill

This is one of the questions that leads to another.

I can't find the answer to these on the FAQ page.

1) How do I get to the battery in a Macintosh Classic? I hope I
don't have to take the back off it. The FAQ has a link to batteries,
be the page doesn't explain how to change the battery.

Which leads to:

2) There is a small panel above the power switch. I removed it it
hope of finding the battery there, but instead find a bunch of knobs
and what looks somewhat like sound ports.

This really should be taken to the compact-macs list.

In any case, yeah, you need to open up the case. Don't worry, its
not that hard. Actually, I take that back. The Classic form factor
is the single hardest compact to open. The top sticks. You gotta
angle your toes in wierd erotic angles and yank the bejeezus out of
it. The computer, that is.

Once you have the case open its pretty easy. The Classic case is
pretty neat inside.

Standard disclaimers: do stuff at your own risk. I am not your
mother. I am not very good at what I do, and certainly should not be
advising anyone else. if you get your ass blown 12 miles high you
probably deserve it for listening to me so you can't sue me. ie
Perform at own risk.

70ns, 60ns or some such (if such thing exist).

I've often wondered what would happen if one tried SLOWER SIMMs that those
listed as the minimum requirement. Everymac.com has various Macs noted as
requiring 80ns, 70ns, 60ns, et al. My curiosity hasn't been so burning that
I've bought slower SIMMs for this purpose and tried them in a Mac, but it
would be interesting to know why this SIMM speed requirement is important,
and why it varies so from Mac to Mac, even among Macs made around the same
time.

Tried it. Doesn't work out too well.
SOmetimes it'll just crash, sometimes you'll get SadMac.

Essentially its the speed at which the RAM is accessed. Putting
120ns RAM in a IIci is like putting PC100 in a new G4. FYI PC66 will
take 83MHz usually, PC100 up to 112 or so. Never overclocked PC133.
RAM speeds are just like CPU speeds in that they can only go so fast.
They get hot and have limits (beyond heat).

Sigs Re: Handgun ban sig, personal attacks

2001-07-25 Thread Andrew W. Hill

?!?!?!? Blah! #@%%! An agent of Dark Side, and a dangerous one without
  morals that is!

What does any of this have to do with the guy's morals or lack thereof ?
He may be a Republican, which is regrettable IMHO, but he's young and maybe
he'll come around. Changing a server from UNIX to NT was part of his job.
Should he have resigned in protest ?

IMAO? Probably. I would have. I have, in fact. This list isn't
here to discuss the benefits of UNIX over NT, but just ask anyone
who's done it - they all regret it. I don't know anyone thats happy
over it. I'm only posting this message to urge people never to do it
ever ever ever. Ever.

IMHO, the Listmom should seriously consider a new advisory regarding these
controversial sigs. Just a week ago, a large series of inflammatory posts
were made on another list, provoked by one persons religious sig and
another's objection to it.

Nobody would find such a sig appropriate in a diverse workplace and they
don't really seem germaine or appropriate to a diverse Maclist either. I
enjoy a little controversy myself and don't mind people going a bit off
topic, but I realize that there are others who do not.

Political and religiously provocative sigs are powerful temptations for
people to blast others. They are easily more powerful than most people's
desire to stay on topic. If you really want people to stay on topic, then
perhaps banning religious and political sigs would be a productive step in
that direction. Just a thought. I know I'm not the listmom or owner of this
or any other list. Sorry for going/being off topic myself.

I will be seriously irritated if such a ban occurs. This list is
based in the USA and is bound by the laws thereof. Yes, it is a
private club, but I will fight for my first amendment rights to
wear whatever tee-shirt (figuratively) I darn well want. I try not
to offend with my sigs, but to me its the same as deciding how to
wear my hair or what shirt I wear. This isn't a professional
workplace, we don't have to look good in front of clients. If
someone wants a sig with nothing but the seven deadlies I would
consider them immature, but I feel it should be their right to do so.

They are TEMPTATIONS. People on a worldwide internet list (or anywhere, for

Religion and Wayne Gretzky last week. Guns this week. So far so not good

Seems like a bit of an extreme step. If this measure were taken I would

I wouldn't. It's not the public library. It's his list.

I possibly would. Not based on that it isn't his place to do so. It
*is* his list.
However, I'm not sure I would want to be in a place where something
like my sig is suppressed. I watch my language in my posts, as is
proper, and I keep my topics mostly mac/list related, but my sig is
my sig.

I'm still trying to find out what a -671 error is.

-671 is a connection proccesses error usually associated with an Open
Transport crash.

1) Where can I find a list of error codes and what they mean?

Install MACSBug. Or rather, get MacsBugApp. You can't hurt your
computer too bad with that.
Open it and type Error #-671 and it'll tell ya.

2) One thing I'll never understand is why the Macintosh, with it's
ease of use, has always had error codes that are so user unfriendly.
Even DOS has no error message as unfriendly and Macintosh Error
codes. Windows 95 comes close, however.

Most people don't care about the error codes. The only ones that
should ever occur would be 0 and 1... maybe 4. The others aren't too
common or could easily be bypassed by a programmer (noFPU for
instance).
