As long as your discussion doesn't contain discussion about things
like terrorism, bomb making, high-value government targets, culturing
anthrax, dirty bombs or other illegal activity you shouldn't have
anything to worry about. Go back to huddling in the corner by the door
with your shotgun, mumbling "they're out to get me".

Re: network

2005-10-05 Thread NODEraser
If you're looking to do Internet, an Ethernet network is probably
best. However, for file or printer sharing, a Localtalk network would
work just fine.

Re: Apple Pippin

2005-09-26 Thread NODEraser
The Sega Dreamcast ran on Windows CE, and had a built-in modem and (I
think) Ethernet. It came with either a CD that had a web browser on
it, or the browser was stored in ROM. It's been a while since I've
used one, but my friend had one that we used all the time. Web
browsing was made much easier with an option keyboard, since you had
to do the game of selecting letters with the controller if you didn't
have a keyboard. I don't remember if you could save anything (images,
etc.) to the memory cards, however.

The memory cards themselves were pretty neat, as they had an LCD
screen and their own sets of controls, with which you could play
mini-games that were downloaded from the Internet or off of game
discs.

Sorry if I'm driving off-topic even more, but I found it interesting
that the Dreamcast tanked in the face of competition from the xBox and
PS2. It was certainly more versatile.

there is HTTP software built in.

Just for kicks, give the motherboard the dishwasher treatment. It may
only be a temporary solution, but it seems to have corrected some

Re: Distributed Computing

2005-09-02 Thread NODEraser
A G3 would be fully capable of running OS X (not sure about Tiger,
however and especially with the rest of the hardware being of the
older generation) with the appropriate memory and hard disk space
requirements. Unfortunately as a student, I do not posess the capital
to make the necessary upgrades (or purchase a newer, OS X native
system). Linux is one option that I would like to explore, but I would
likely need a larger hard disk and more memory for that as well.

I just want to use my distributed computing apps! I'm in somewhat of a
competition/frenzy with a few friends of mine, to see who can pull the
most work units. I haven't got the most cutting-edge farm, but it
fares OK. It's a shame that so many have abandoned Classic OS, when
even Microsoft still supports OS9 for Internet Explorer and other
applications. (Oops, perhaps I shouldn't have said that, as it will
likely open a huge can of worms). Of course, the question remains for
how long.

Can someone come up with an Intel/AMD equivalency for the G3 for our
Linux friend here? I'm drawing a blank at the moment, but I'm assuming
it must fall into the Pentium II/III vintage.

I didn't know Classic was still chugging along... I'll download it ASAP.

A BOINC client for OS9 could still be useful, because I'm sure there
are iMac-ers or other G3 folks who don't have the resources to upgrade
to OS X, but could still process workunits in time.

By the way, my PM6100 has a G3-266 upgrade card in it.

It appears that [EMAIL PROTECTED] is no longer supporting their Classic
client, I was thinking that a BOINC client for Classic MacOS could be
a useful thing. There doesn't seem to be a team working on such a
client on the BOINC port pages, so I was wondering if there was anyone
out there who's got the know-how to start such a project. I would do
it myself, but I know absolutely nothing about compiling programs.

If anyone is interested, there is a lot of information (and the BOINC
source) here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/compile.php

Actually, I know a few people who are (and have been) running PC games
on their Macs, even playing online. They use VMWare as far as I know,
although I'm not too familiar with that product. A video card upgrade
is usually required, however, to make the Mac compatible with DirectX
or the game in question.

I started using Macs and PCs at about the same time (1990 or so), and
have continued to use both over the years. I don't find either OS
particularly difficult to use or navigate, but perhaps it's just
because I have grown with them.

OpenOffice has many things to work out before it can become a serious
competitor with Microsoft Office. It's still really buggy, and there
are some semi-important things (in my opinion) that you just can't do,
like only print a selected page(s) from a spreadsheet.

Re: Ethernet Bridges & Printing

2005-06-17 Thread NODEraser
Ok, I managed to get ahold of a DB-9 Female to DB-25 Male cable, but I
still can't seem to get the silly thing to work. Any pointers on
getting the proper settings down? I found this table
(http://www.nefec.org/upm/printers/mapiif.htm#Settings) that gives
information for the different settings on the printer, but does anyone
know of a magic setting that will make the PC and the LaserWriter be
happy with each other? I've tried settings 1-3 with similar settings
on the computer, but so far haven't gotten it to work. I'm assuming
that I have to select one of the "Raw" modes in order for it to work
with a Windows computer...

Maybe I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Ethernet Bridges & Printing

2005-06-15 Thread NODEraser
I have a LaserWriter IIf that I would like to keep on PhoneNet, and
connect to Ethernet. I have a Farallon EtherMac iPrint Adapter
(PhoneNet type) and a AsanteTalk LocalTalk-Ethernet bridge. Can I use
one of these devices to connect my LWIIf to Ethernet, so I can use it
with newer Macs? I'm assuming the answer to this is yes.

The next question is, can I use one of these devices to connect the
printer to Ethernet, so that I can use it with PCs? I know the IIf is
PC-compatible via serial, but it woud be much nicer to have it running
on Ethernet so I don't have to keep a print server running all the
time.

I lightly skimmed Google earlier, and found a forum topic somewhere
where a guy asked if he could do the same with Linux PCs. It sounded
like the parties involved thought it was possible, although no actual
method of doing this came up.

I guess my other alternative would be to get a serial cable, set up a
print server and STFU.

Just because Intel will be manufacturing the chips doesn't mean that
future Macs will be running Pentium 4's. If Apple gives them specs for

Re: Oh my....... Intel CPU's???

2005-06-06 Thread NODEraser
So, is Intel just going to manufacture the chips, or will they have an
active part in developing their architecture?

Sounds like you're already planning Apple's funeral. I think the only
way that Apple will die out, is if everyone jumps ship when they make
the conversion to Intel chips. Although, looking at some of the
messages in this thread, that very well could happen.

Oh, well. I think pretty much everyone will be running some flavor of
Linux in 5-10 years, regardless of the CPU they're running it on.

Does anyone have a disk image of the "Commands" disk available? I was

Re: IIci Power Supply; Was: What to do with IIcx?

2005-05-30 Thread NODEraser
If it's anything like the IIcx, there's a plastic latch just behind
the disk & hard drive that you have to pry to release the power
supply. I don't remember exactly what it looks like, but I do remember
it took some wiggling to get the PSU out. Be careful with the latch,
as it's probably pretty brittle after all these years.

Re: What to do with IIcx?

2005-05-26 Thread NODEraser
I notice that G3 iMacs still sell for about $100 or more on eBay.

I've got a PowerMac 7100/66 with a 266MHz Sonnet Crescendo G3 upgrade.
It runs OS9, and IE5 just fine. I'd like to get Word and Excel on it
as well. Too bad OpenOffice.org only works for OS X.

My "new" computers aren't that great, either. The 7100/G3 is the
fastest Mac I have. My laptop is the only one to break 1GHz (at
3.0GHz), which I just bought a few months ago. Other than that, my
other computers are 200, 300 and 550MHz. And, I run the latest
programs without any problems.

The main problem (?) is that computers are just so damned cheap
anymore. I "affectionately" call Dell the computer of the month club,
because that's how they market their computers. I suppose Apple isn't
far behind, with the Mac mini and other systems coming down in price.

stuff that's still perfectly useable.

Re: What to do with IIcx?

2005-05-13 Thread NODEraser
There's an entire directory of 68k-based web servers here:
http://macintosh.luddite.ca/

I've been thinking about getting my SE to work as a web server, but
those SCSI Ethernet adapters sell for a pretty hefty price on eBay.
I've also got a Quadra 610 that's a 68k with a built-in Ethernet
connection. I think that would be easier and cheaper.

Unless you happen to have a Windows server at your house, you'd also
have to buy a SCSI controller, and then an adapter to get you down to
50-pin narrow.

Yeah, I've always wondered how much good equipment gets thrown away by
schools, or given to recycling centers by individual users. I'm sure
that there are people who even recyle their "old" 3 GHz computer when
they buy a new 3.2GHz one.

I've made a couple of salvages from schools and individuals, you just
have to know who to contact, where to look, and what questions to ask.
