Floppies Please...

2001-07-09 Thread RomRider

anyone live in Calgary Alberta Canada and would be willing to make me some
system 7.5 floppies? I tried for days to transfer stuff from the pc to the
mac but then read somewhere that pc's like to destroy binaries... hqx files
work ok but the first of 16 disks for system 7.5 is a binary and can't seem
to be transfered via the pc...Hmmm.. unless a pc running linux would work...
anyone know if a pc running linux will mangle the files or is it just
windows that wrecks things?

PC SCSI drive

2001-07-10 Thread RomRider

I have a PC formatted SCSI drive 1 gigabyte that i'd like to put on a
Macintosh LC... However the disk tools floppy does not seem to see this
drive when I boot up... what could be the problem? the drive as far as I
can tell is set as the primary drive and there are no other drives in the
system... the drive also works fine under the control of a PC...

Re: my stash of Macs

2001-07-25 Thread RomRider

just a brief defence of 486 machines, I am a mac fan but I also have several
486 machines that are quite useful... The only thing you need in an old 486
to make it useful is lots of ram, if you can squeeze 32 megs or more in you
can run a nice distro of linux...

I do however love my mac LC with 10 megs ram and an ethernet card... &
system 7.5.3 although i'd like to find the update to 7.5.5 as I hear it has
open transport built right in.

Re: Mac SE no boot disk

I'm assuming you have not yet opened it up? Does it have a hard drive? if so
does the drive spin up when the machine is turned on? Your going to think
i'm nuts by saying this but I had to give the side of my 40meg SCSI drive a
good whack to get it to boot up after it had siezed up... that was over two
months ago and it's running great with OS 7.5.3 on it...

for me so I can bring them down to floppies using my PC then transfer them
to my mac via the PeeSea? my mac does not yet have any access to the
network because macTCP does not seem to be able to use shaw@home's DHCP...

Ok just confirmed that the above does work... when I clicked on download of
the .sea.bin file it of course asks where I want to save it, I changed the
name to .sea.bin.txt then put it on a mac floppy moved it over and renamed
it on the mac machine.. :)

Thanks for the tip you really saved me a tonne of time having my friend

I am currently a so called PC user as well as a mac user but at least from
my perspective or opinion both hardware platforms are nice, it's the
operating system "the other guy" made that ain't so nice... I'm not here to

hardware.. and it's nice that I can run linux on both platforms and use
those programs on both hardware... Please lets not get into how much muscle
each or the other has... or a huge debate just nice to express opinions...

I couldn't agree with the above statement more... Certainly building and
selling as many 80x86's as I do I am now starting to consider making
recomendations to people who are somewhat new to the world of computers to
purchase a macintosh... One of the HUGE pitfalls of selling new users a
pentium type machine is that the damn things crash so much... <--- this
statement from a long time Pentium user... On the other hand they are cheap
to build, I can build a basic pentium box for a few hundred dollars... want
all the bells and whistles and it costs more but for basic tasks it may be
all you need...

What would be nice would be to have some type of supply of older macs like a
powerbook 1400cs with loads of ram in it. They would sell as decent little
student laptops... I don't know enough about macs to know which mac is
which but I will be spending a lot of time and a little bit of money buying
up used macs when and where I can... I passed up the chance to get a
powerbook 100 I think it was for 35 bucks... I didin't think it would be of
any use, now I'm thinking it would have been a fun little toy at least...

to mourn.. not so strange... I think we all needed a place to vent our
frustrations about this horrible thing that has happened to the
Americans... Just so happens we are members of a mac list i'm sure we
will get back on topic soon enough...

Now for a mac question... I have a macintosh LC that I can't seem to get
on my local lan... Try as I might I have a PDS ethernet card that was
successful in getting an old version of ICQ to connect, but I have not
had any luck after that... actually I had fetch working one day as
well.. I'm wondering why or how I was able to do things one day but not
the next. The system I am connecting to is a linux server using DHCP to
pass out IP's...

Can anyone tell me of some useful things a mac LC (pizza box type) can
do with ten megs of ram in it and an ethernet card? I tried netscape
2.02 in OS 7.5 but it's so slow it's next to useless...

Sincerely,
A Canadian disturbed by a sick society!!!
