don't recall the name of that little utility! :P

PPC checker is one. Most early PowerMacs will boot from
a 7.5 boot disk. I'm not even sure if there was a pure
PPC version of 7.x.x with the exception of 7.1.2 and
maybe 7.6.x. It isn't until the iMac era that
machine-specific installs became a reality (except for
powerbooks, maybe). And some will still boot, just not
install. The earlier Macs give a lot more lee-way. I
have a 68k 7.6 disk tools that will boot an SE/30 but
7.6 won't install on a stock SE/30.

dog and your toaster and all your Macs without
infringing anything. It's all considered freeware and

In real terms, I don't give it a second thought. I wipe
every acquired drive anyway -- after checking it for
cool software -- then install what I think it needs. I
work for advertisers and internet companies a lot and
when they find out that I have an interest in old
machines, they sometimes open the closet doors and say,
take what you want. So operating systems are the
least of my licensing problems. Plus, I get stuff that
has all kinds of personal junk on it too but we've all
been through that. If the NYC police can be convinced
by some copyright holder to raid my apartment and take
down serial numbers from the software on an SE/30 or a
6100, then we're really in trouble.

update in years, offers no support, and doesn't even

Ignore the PC drives for now. You need a SCSI utility

Any decent SCSI utility -- eg, Mt. Everything, MNU,

is no media in it. It will report no media or

drive is beinng seen by the SCSI controller.

There's a Mac utility -- actually several -- that will
mount pesky drives. SCSI Probe is one and Mt.

see the external. Let me know what you get. If you

 another time using

So we can rule termination out as a cause.

I don't understand whole disc. It's a typical

You need a two-headed SCSI cable and a two-headed
power cable.

 2. Is there a limit to the -size-? I am thinking of
dropping in a 1gb IDE drive? IDE is ok?

No way. Or, it's more trouble than it's worth.

 3. The main idea is to have one drive run 6.0.7, and
one drive run 7.something. Any worries there?

Not if they have different SCSI IDs.

 4. Beyond a printer cord, what would I need to do a
simple network between a ci and an si? I just need
 the
HD in the si to appear on the desktop of the ci.

That can be done. The printer cord deal. But go with
AppleTalk phone connectors. They're cheap as dirt and
waay better. Plus, should you get a networkable
printer you can just slap it into the network.

Add the enabler to the boot disk.

Then I turn it off and turn it back on.

After displayed a smile mac on screen, then my LC III only displayed a
floppy disk picture with a blinking '?' or a 'X' on it.
I can still move the cursor, but that's it.
Is there anything I can do guys ??

Startup with a boot disk and open the system folder and get info on the
system file. *Might* work. Otherwise, do you have installation disks? If so
clean install the system. Hope you're using a newer system.

Re: LCIII and LCIII+

2001-08-25 Thread william ahearn

Is there any limitation on the size of the SCSI drive installed in these
computers?

Any problems that can be encountered?

Any thing I should know?

7.x.x is limited to 2 gigs. That's any version of 7. So if you want bigger
than 2 gigs, you'll have to partition under 7.x.x. OS 7.6.1 and up doesn't
have the limitation but the machine's limit is 7.6.1. So, if you want a
bigger drive, get 7.6.1. The only problem with drives in the pizza boxes is
size. Believe you need a 1/3 height but I'm not betting the farm on that
since it's been a while since I had an LCIII. But less height for sure. No
problems with drives that I've ever encountered. LC IIIs are great to
upgrade and maintain. Real easy. Should be no problems.

Re: OT: Famous PC parts company does a funny. :)

4400's have the words PowerPC just to the left of
the floppy slot as well as
ventilation holes below the leading edge of the
machine on the front. I doubt
this pic is one of a 4400.

The picture had been flopped. If you notice, the
on/off switch for the monitor is also on the left.
Highly unusual. It's a Mac I've never owned so I guess
that narrows it down. But I'll go look again.

Re: OT: Famous PC parts has a 6100

2001-08-16 Thread William Ahearn

If it were a 6100, you'd be able to clearly see the
 power button in that
 photo.

Could have been erased.

Plus, the 6100 is a pizza box styled case,
 with the CD-ROM in the
center of the case. The one pictured is too tall for
 a 6100, and has a
 CD-ROM beneath the floppy.

There is no CD in that picture. Check out the height
of the box vs the monitor. Look at the floppy and the
form factor bulge.

Of what, $5? That's about what they're worth these

As someone who gives a lot of Mac gear and numerous
desktops to non-profits I can tell you two things:

1) You can quote a fair-market price for the item. So
you can use a quote from say Shreves Systems or other
vendor that sets its prices based on arcane, obscure
and unreasonable economic variables; and,

2) Unless you are already itemizing every conceivable
expense, the US tax code makes it ridiculous to take
penny-ante deductions. You end up losing money unless
you're giving away $5,000+ in donations.

Trust me on this one.I give away a lot of stuff and I
got a friend who's a tax specialist for HR Block and
I'm not taking any deductions for the stuff.

But do it anyway if they can use it.
