1st Mac Portable

2003-06-23 Thread dhill
We're watching Roxanne with Steve Martin. Noticed the first Macintosh
Portable in his (Steve Martin's) house. How come I hadn't noticed it
before? Anyone else ever noticed it?

17 One Color Scanner

2003-04-14 Thread dhill
I have two Apple One Scanners, both color. I install the One Scanner
installation for the 17 inch one which is dedicated to a Mac VX. I
can get a regular color image with it, but I cannot get the 17 inch
scan, nor can I get a grayscale scan. If I try to get a black and
white scan, it corrupts the software and I have to re-enstall the
whole thing. After two hours of efforts to get a good gray scale
scan, I have resorted to this list for the gurus to ponder. I can
only get a fifth grayscale scan and then nothing.

Is there a better driver that I can use for that 17 Scanner than the
software that came with its later counterpart? If so, what one should
I use and where can I download it. The name of the files as well.

Word Juggler

2003-01-08 Thread dhill
I acquired 8 diskettes at some auction somewhere and for years, they
sat in my freezer in the back building. So, I retire and I decide
that I will do a little research and see what these diskettes are.
Well, ... I put up a page about them. Word Juggler for the Apple III
is really the modern day, Quark, world wide, one of the most popular
and expensive programs that newspapers use. Click the url below.
Word Juggler certainly helped make the Macintosh an important
computer, even our Vintage Macintoshes. If you have any other info
on those disks, let me know. I may or may not put them on eBay
sometime.

17 inch monitors

2002-09-12 Thread dhill

I have pretty much decided to stick with 15 inch monitors from now
on. The 17 inch ones are just two big for my back to handle. When
you get old, that is what happens. You can get free 15 inch monitors
by standing on a corner in a big city with a sign, Needed, 15 inch
Mac or PC monitor!, and someone will give you one free.

Copyright

2002-08-01 Thread dhill

My general rule of thumb, is, if I use it, I pay for it. I use Works
4.0 and it is a legit copy. Paid for Opera and my trusty
GraphicConvert. Bought and used the heck out of Allwrite, still my
favorite wordprocessor. Also bought Dot Writer, and will soon build
another Desk to fire up my only TRS-4P with a High Rez board in it.
Love it. Got a brother that down loads everything he can get and use
off of gypsy ISP that are set up for that. Don't remember the name
he used for them but he had Windows NT on his machine LONG before it
was released. Remember the Mousetrap adage, and if Apple overprices
their product, a company will come in and undercut them. My brother,
who lives in Bangkok, sends me stacks of CDs that I don't even have
the time to browse, ... all the latest stuff. Laughed my head off at
one of the headlines on Penis Shrine in Bangkok. And my brother
thinks the US society is decadent. In Thailand, you have payoff
anybody and everybody if you start a business, and if you ain't Thai,
they won't accept your money.

Copyright Issue

2002-07-31 Thread dhill

The copyright issue is a world wide joke. Whole, entire, countries
and populations do not honor US copyright laws. Heck, you can buy a
copy of Windows newest OS on good clean CDs on the streets of
Bangkok, bundled with their newest office all for 10 bucks unless you
get them down to 5 dollars. What a nightmare? The copyright law for
software written in 1978 gave advantage to software companies to make
millions off of junk and when it didn't work or quit working you got
to buy a backup for 10 bucks but after that it went back up to 50
bucks. THere are sites on the Net that you can download the newest
edition of everything. But it operates out the mousetrap level of our
economy. If a company can come up with a better, cheaper, or
potentially cheaper product, ... we're looking at new rules of the
game. How about Apple and Sun, marketing a cheaper Suite of Office
Applications. I bet Microsoft lives on the edge everyday they look
at the industry because it would only take a year to see their market
go to nothing. Anybody remember, Wordstar, Deskmate, Allwrite, ... .
Tough stuff.

2500 color stylewriter

2002-06-13 Thread dhill

I have a color stylewriter 2500 that prints nicely if I have one of
those big ink cartridges. It printed in color too, but ... suddenly
stopped printing in color and gives me an error that says, the
cartridge is not in there right or something. Is it possible that
bigger holder of the black and color cartridges has gone bad. Anyone
have an experience with this printer running it in color?

Bad Tubes and Analog Boards

2001-08-15 Thread dhill

My ISP has been down and is now back up. I am celebrating by sending
this. I have a bunch, and I do mean a bunch of Mac SE cases out on my
porch. I thought they would make good cat houses. One time, one of
our two cats spent the day sleeping in one. Of course, they do make
good fish tanks, so I have heard. But, ... in the process of taking
these apart, I figured out an easy way to install monitors on bad
screened gems that I wanted to refurbish. It is easy and painless.

If you have an SE/30 or FDHD or Superdrive that you need a new tube
in, simply find an old SE and tear it apart. If the refurb computer
is flashing and has an unstable analog board, simply find an SE that
is stable as a rock. Switch them out. The tube, though, can be a
headache if you replace it and have to adjust it. Don't adjust it.
Simply leave the yoke on the good tube and replace the bad one with
the tube and yoke together. Voila, no adjusting need. Those darn
magnets can be a headache. By the way, I have yet to get zapped by
any electricity either. Turning on a Mac SE for a couple of minutes
to check out its video prowess, seems not to make any charge build
up. Shoot, and I have taken them apart and checked them out, and
unreplaced them without a problem right after each other. I have
several good monitors that I am saving with yoke attached.

Do I solder on mbs and analog boards? I have, but have not been very
successful; certainly not successful enough to brag about so I try my
best to skirt that issue by only replacing solid as a rock analogs
for the jittery ones.

Hope this helps some of the Baby Macers to take the jump into tearing
them up and putting them back together. I am getting so good at
this, that if you laid out the parts on a table, I can put them back
together without a problem. Again, as I have related to others, I
tore up a small torx screwdriver and use the shaft in combination
with an electric screw drive and an extension to make it easier. I
have serious arthritis problems, so the easier on me the better.
Have fun with those old Babies.

Wrong List (Mac Classic)

2001-07-27 Thread dhill

Hmm, I thought this list dealt with 68020 Macs as well as the 030's
so wouldn't the questions on the Mac Classic fit here. You have to
pull the power supply and the hard drive cable from the motherboard,
and, of course, you sure cannot miss the memory expansion board.
