ahh, this makes some sense of a problem i'm having on both my Duo230c

i put in discs which have worked fine on PCs, and the Macs will format
them for mac but then verify, re-verify and finally spit the disc out
with 'initialisation failed'.

i cant seem to work out why it will accept some discs and not others.

its not saying write-protected, though.

awwww! (networking my LCIII)

2003-09-08 Thread iriXx
LC III's are so cute.

i finally got round to doing the job of extracting the database from my
Duo230 and moving it onto the LCIII, where i need to transfer it by
ethernet to my laptop and email it out to the client it belongs to.

i needed to add an ethernet card to the LCIII (which someone from the
list very kindly sent me a long long time ago)

never lifted the lid on a mac before - always been a PC person and had
to unscrew stuff and do things the cumbersome way.
so i got prepared with a bunch of screwdrivers.

and realised that you just unclip the lid on LC's and they just flip
open how CUTE!

apples are so amazing for being engineer-friendly as well as user friendly.

i bunged in some RAM i had lying around while i was at it.
next job is to add some RAM to my Duo230... i havent tried lifting the
lid on these, i wonder if they're the same?... are all Apples built so
they just hinge or slide apart, without screws?

now i need to transfer the database to my PC - which should be okay, but
i've never got the LC III talking to Windows XP or to Linux. in theory
it should be okay, but i'm struggling a little with MacTCP. does anyone
know an optimal way i can set up networking, with just a crossover cable
between the two machines?

thankx

and its very scary...

i found some Furbies in the local charity shop today.

apparently they have a 6502 processor, that was used in the Apple ][, as

you can communicate with these things via the IR port of a laptop... but
in windoze only as far as i've found.

what would be sooo, so cool would be to communicate with/hack a
Furby via a vintage mac.

anyone ever tried?...

five reasons to kick off an artist and writer who writes in all

1. Memory is RAM, for Random Access Memory. It's not Ram or ram.

2. Cycles are abbreviated Hz in honor of Mr. Hertz. KHz, MHz, and GHz are
the correct abbreviations for kilohertz, megahertz, and gigahertz.

3. The computer is a Mac, short for Macintosh. MAC stands for the Machine

If you get bounce messages from the list server and your replies are

Spam Assassin looks at the email, scores each message based on factors

i'm on about. am i to be suspended for doing so? thats what i wonder, when i read this
latest series of notes.

i was also made aware that flawed jai, a valuable contributor to this list, was kicked
off because of an accidental off topic post. this is ridiculous! you guys are worse
than the RIAA!

as you've now effectively killed off all the character on this list by kicking off
members one by one, i'm finding less and less reason to read this increasingly
pedantic tripe. i'm very tempted to unsubscribe.. now give me five reasons i should
stay and none of them should be spelt with capitals.

thanks. yeah, i was checking 3 macs and a printer, and the other refs on
the faq, which will certainly get me going for wiring my 2 macs
together, the difficulty comes with the linux netatalk stuff, i've had
very variable results with it (and im much better at linux networking
than anything else!). worked beautifully talking to a G3 Powerbook, cant
get it working at all with a G4 desktop. havent tried the 68ks yet but
im fairly sure its going to be interesting...

its also what they did with their Celeron Mendoncino 300Mhz chips...
i have one - its a lobotomized pentium II, and you can overclock it to

it becomes a list concern when the attitude displayed is so off-putting
that other list members dont feel like reading the list anymore. i'm not
concerned about the original debate, what i'm concerned about is that
i'm becoming increasingly reluctant to post anything to this list for
fear of having my head bitten off.

doh, no sorry... forgot to double check...
Acid Burn's computer i think was a 180c - active matrix colour screen.
the date is about right too, i believe Hackers was released in 1995,
which would put its production dates around the release time of the
180c it has proprietary modem slot according to the specs on
lowendmac.com too, so this would fit her description of the machine
better go back to the movie & check tho ;-)

anyone care to debate? :)

oh this is fun... yeah, i'd love to see your page, i'm following this
sort of thing myself

  3) What computer is Zero Cool using when he checks out Acid Burn's
"new" computer in the movie Hackers? We are trying to set up a vintage
mac trivia to put on my web page and need some serious help! Thanks for
whatever help you can provide.

now this one i did figure out... i think i decided it must be a
Powerbook 170, because they were raving about the 'active matrix' screen
and it was the first to have one
i'm new to this tho, so the expert 'spotters' might like to disagree
with me ;-) i'd need to check the modem too, apparently in the movie it
had a 28.8 modem from what i remember (will have to go watch my copy of
Hackers again :-)... did the PB 170 support 28.8?...

another interesting thing to note in 'Hackers' is that the good guys,
the hackers, use macs, and the bad guys use PCs!!!

there are several macs on this, the ones i'm trying to figure out are
Zero cool's home computer, and the Phreak's computer

the hacking scene in Central Station uses *tons* of original Powerbooks
too :)...

oh great! have to check it, i never saw it as a kid!!!

interesting thing about Hackers, as far as i can see, is the good guys,
the hackers, all use mac powerbooks - 180s, i think, and an LC III in
there somethwere too and one powerbook with a really neat clear case
mod...
whereas the bad guys all use PCs... ;-)
