This newsgroup is great but I need some specific things. You all say it
can be run to receive email and such but you guys never say what
hardware you use to get connected. I have an LC that I am going to
upgrade (mobo, RAM, VRAM, etc..) but what kind of hardrive will fit in
the box as well as what dialup modem will go with it or can I share a
cable connection with my PeeCee? (router?)

Hmm, well, I picked up a $2.50 internal modem from Other World
Computing's garage sale the other day. Good news: it has an FPU (68882)
socket. Bad news: it runs at 2400, just as the pickle had predicted. Any
3.5 SCSI HDD will work, and the 190-350MB range is available all over
the net for peanuts.

Subject: TCP/IP and System 7
From: Luca Rescigno [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I just got an LC III+ and I'm planning on setting it up as a computer
to use at my home for basic internet browsing and email when I'm not at
my dorm. Right now it's working, with OS 7.6.1 and an ethernet card (my
home has IDSL internet so it comes through our LAN). However, on the 33
MHz 68030 processor, OS 7.6.1 seems quite sluggish. It's perfectly
usable, but it would be nice if it was faster. I would like to put 7.1
on it, but I am afraid I won't be able to connect it to the internet
using 7.1 because 7.1 doesn't have TCP/IP, it has MacTCP. TCP/IP is
what manages every other computer's network connection.

Anyway, I'd like to set it up, and I'd really appreciate any
suggestions people would be willing to give me. I am not putting 7.5.5
on it because it's probably not much faster than 7.6.1, and it's a
downgrade in other respects as well.

So I have two options, really. Find a way to connect to the network in
7.1 (either by hacking TCP/IP onto it or by getting MacTCP to work with
my network), or find a way to speed up 7.6.1...

By stripping out all the ppc code from the OS using PowerPCheck 3.2 FAT
you can slim down and speed up 7.6.1 considerably. I have an LC575
running this setup. Nevertheless, augmenting 7.1 is just so much cooler
to do.

Subject: LC 520 and the CD Caddy
In-Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ok, perhaps a silly question, but I scored a LC 520
thrift store find this week, and in the front left
there is a covered slot named CD Caddy. SCSI Probe
says there is a CD-ROM drive in the machine. BUT:
Apple CD Player tells me it can't find it, and, if I
attempt to put a CD into the caddy, it looks like it's
just going to drop in the computer. I opened up the
back and looked through, and I don't see what I'd
expect to see if there was a CD drive in there. But
I'm used to CD drives where there is a button on the
front, and the tray comes out.

So, is there just something I am missing here? SCSI
Probe is so sure the drive is installed that it gives
the model number and everything.

Try the 5.3.1 version of Apple CD-ROM extension after you find a caddy.

screen, thus disabling all extensions. Do a search (Cmd-F) for at ease
and trash every item found. Restart.

Mozilla is suffering from severe bloat, mostly due to the morons
at Nutscrape who thought it would be a good idea to put an e-mail client
and an HTML editor in it. Chimera is about 10x faster and it has the exact
same rendering engine.

Mebbe so, but I install only the 'Zilla browser and feedback client, and
I still use Emailer in 9.1.

And iCab still kicks Mozilla up and down on the Classic Mac OS.

laughs No way. Simply opening faster does not make it better all-round,
though I can certainly appreciate your spirited impatience. But I'd
rather have tabbed windows available for the journey than start up a few
seconds faster only to have to ride around in that homely tab-less taxi.

For me, iCab is an aesthetic basket case, and I use it only when
absolutely necessary, the ugly little thing. I do think its skinnier
window borders (whatever they're really called) may be more helpful now
and then than Mozilla Modern's when used on a 10 or less screen along
with toolbars, control strip, et. al. Like maybe ten times a year around
here...

Gotta love those Mozilla tabs

No, but why are you trying to choke your IIsi to death with 7.6? :)

  2. Same situation, however I'm getting an error code -192 that

That's usually indicative that PPC code is trying to be run on a 68K.

Try an install For this Macintosh and see if that helps.

Would stripping all the PPC code from 7.6.1 meet with your approval then?
IIRC it's much slimmer afterward, too.

That's awful. Let's see, with 6 other apps running (including iCab), my
PB2400/G3-320 (8.6) gets Mozilla's browser window open in...uh oh...20
sec. Not so hot at sharing cpu time I guess. Maybe that's where the
difference comes in. Quitting iCab, trying it again...still about 20 sec
with 5 other apps running. But in my WallSt (now on the fritz with power
problems), 'Zilla was been terrific. Gotta admit that iCab seems more
appropriate for the comparatively tiny screen size of the Comet. Maybe I
should try it in the CC/PPC too...

That unseemly delay between the Mozilla splash screen's disappearance and
the browser window's opening--about 8-9 seconds on this Comet? They will,
I hope, fix that before long.

BTW, anyone know why iCab lists two copies of the QT plugin when I have

Not much different on the Wallstreet.

Huh? Certainly is: I told ya, my Wallstreet gets that browser window open
in under 9 seconds, and that includes the delay. But I *am* using a
500MHz cpu.

...why iCab lists two copies of the QT plugin when I have but one?

Check your System Folder - Internet Plug-Ins. There probably *are* two
copies. All Plug-Ins should be in the System Folder location under later
Mac OS versions; just alias that folder for browsers that don't check it
like Nutscrape or older IEs.

Forgot about that one (again). Thanks!

I am not using one of the switches. I've always wondered if I could snip a

Anyway, I think I am going to wait unti I get that 475 that I paid for

having problems with the switch box, I will ask my friend (who will be doing
the work) if it's advisable to create such a Y-Adaptor.

Thinking outloud here...maybe I can create this Y-adaptor using a toggle
switch (again I have no idea what I am talking about...it sounds good)?

There may be a spare //e card Y-cable somewhere around here. If you're

You can't do that without a custom mad adapter harness. The power for
the hard disk comes out at a 4 pin header on the logic board just
behind the hard disk bay. The only power header is a 7 pin inline
socket that fits on the opposite side of the logic board next to the

I seem to recall it worked okay in that long-gone IIfx or I wouldn't be

Help with Imprimis full-height drive jumper settings

2002-05-03 Thread rlf9

Howdy folks.

I use a topless LC III to test old scsi drives, but this one has me
hornswoggled. Hooked up and plugged in, this drive, pulled from a IIfx,
just clicks and its red power LED just blinks. I'm starting up from an
external scsi ZIP volume, but the startup hangs whenever the Imprimis is
plugged into the LC III's internal HDD scsi cable.

Looking at the Imprimis drive from the rear, there are seven jumper pairs
just to the left of the AC power receptacle. Counting from the right, the
first two positions are jumpered, while the other five are not.

Then, just to the right of the scsi connector, there are two more sets.
Counting from the left, the first pair is jumpered.

Please help me make sense of this.

about getting the cd to mount??

You're having a problem with an external cd-rom drive. Try using the
Apple CD-ROM 5.3.1 extension in your System instead of whatever's in
there now. Version 5.3.1 will automount discs from most external cd-rom
drives. Handy to have around.

Still poor because of the way it works.

Yes, that's what I think, too (though many say that in 9.x RamDoubler is
not a better substitute for VM). Generally I avoid VM whenever possible,
everywhere. What about you, Mark? I thought the above VM statement

I have a question for you folks. I use Claris Works 3.0 on most of my Macs
as
my Word Processor of choice. My wife is addicted to scrapbooking and I set
out to see if she could make a page via Claris Works drawing or Painting
program. Now why can't Claris Works open any of my jpg files from my kodak
picture cd?

How have you folks gotten around this?

In the Claris Translators folder in the Claris folder in your System
folder there should be a JPEG translator. If it's missing, reinstall CW.
If it's there, check you prefs settings. Other than that, there are
zillions of programs which read JPEGs, starting with the always-free
JPEGView 3.3.1.

I have 3 System 7 machines (LC - 7.0.1 from it's original install disks,

Is that 7.6.1 with or without PPC code? I have a PPC-stripped version of

Yup. In my experience the only time you need to check
that box is when you're using the Mac on it's own
on a dialup account. For TCP/IP networking over a
LAN you _don't_ want it checked. Silly Mac likes to
dump out TCP/IP then can't be persuaded to load it
again, especially when networked to non-Mac machines.

Ah, but using my own Mac on its own on a dialup account,
I keep that box unchecked, and everything works fine. If
checked, there are problems.

One other purpose was to save memory on older machines, the IP Stack

use TCP/IP very often it seems pointless to have it load if you don't

I had to do it a lot on my 7500, I nce couldn't get it to boot with 2

Problem solved. Apple have this weird option in the TCP/IP panel that
you can only get at as an advanced user that stops the TCP/IP system
from loading until it is needed. This means that the machine doesn't
register itself with a DHCP server until it requires TCP/IP connection
for the internet or something. Enough to drive the average net admin

Anybody use an LCIII+ with OS 7.6 on it?
 and what is the performance?

I used 7.5.5 on my III+ for a time and it was dog slow. 7.6.1 is not
much different and will only be worse, but more stable. It's doable and
livable with but not if you need to do anything strenuous.

I'd recommend 7.1, it's stable, speedy and not too feature-bare. Gamba
has d/l links for the 7.1 install disks.

7.1 can be made much more feature-rich by adding components from later
systems (See Gamba's pages).

On the other hand, I stripped all the PPC code from 7.5.5 for use in LC
III's for elementary school programs and was really pleased with the
results. Uses only 4MB RAM, has better AppleScripting support, and no
less stable than 7.6.1. I was surprised!

Another question (yes, I'm a mac newbie!). Is there a utilities floppy of
sorts for mac? I'm looking for something that boots MacOS (or at least a
usable form) and offers me basic stuff like format, partitioning,
etc. Sort of like Tom's Root Boot for linux or a rescue floppy in
Windows. Is there anything like that? I saw in Pickle's FAQ about
booting off another hard disk to accomplish a similar task but I'm curious
as to whether there's a floppy disk that accomplishes the same.

If you can get your hands on a System 7.5 Disk Tools Floppy, it
boots your Mac, no weird extensions required.

Jeff

I've found the 7.5.3 (68K) Disk Tools floppy the all-around best. Can
email you a disk image of it if you want.

Retrospect, but it's not free, although you could use an older version
that's *cheap*...try eBay or LEM-Swap.

Whoa. Before Retrospect, Dantz made a free something else that worked
fine in 68K machines. Can't recall the name of it though. Free, I think.

Hello. I just bought an LCII for no other reason than because
it was so-o-o cute! I think that it has a 60 MG hard drive and
4 MG of RAM, according to the ìget infoî and ìabout this macî
folders. My 14-year old thought he would be able to play
Escape Velocity on it. However, the game requires 6.5 MG of
RAM to run. According to the ìcharts,î I believe that this
computer can hold 10 MG of RAM. Is that correct?

One other question: what is the largest internal HD I can
install without causing problems? I really donít want to live
dangerously; I just want to safely install the most it can
handle. Remember, I'm a newbie.

Thanks and God bless,
Claire Hart

Cast-off LC III's are just as cute (the case is identical) and can hold
lots more RAM. Excellent game machines for young kids--though I guess 14
isn't so young nowadays.

My school was just given three Performa 575s. They
are running system 7.1 and I would like to update the
system. What is the highest I can go? I have 8.5
system disks available, can I do that?

Thanks,
Lee

This is a 68K machine. 8.1 will be a bit slow. You might go as far as
7.6.1 but why? A lot depends on what specific software you want to run.

I've found (forgive me, pickle) 7.5.5 to be a good compromise
for running grade school software. OS 7.5.3 and the 7.5.5 update
can be downloaded for free from Apple's site. A big plus.

Hardware-wise, you can upgrade a motherboard from the stock FPU-less
68LC040 processor to a full FPU-ed 68040 in a few minutes and thus
significantly enhance a 575's display abilities. Add RAM, add VRAM,
and you've got a pretty good, solid machine for school stuff.

Post your needs to the LEM Swap List and be happily surprised how
inexpensive these improvements can be.

My 2 bits.

Hi I am new to the world of Macintosh. I got ahold of an LC III. I have a
question about ramdoubler vs virtual memory.
Ok, When I was using ramdoubler there was some minor problems including a
delay whenever I typed anything. So i took it out of the extentsion folder
and tryed Virtual Memory instead. The delay problem went away.
I thought RD was suppose to be much better than VM.
Is it that my Mac model and system version do not like it?
I have the following setup
LC III
8 MB built in Ram
with VM 20
System 7.1
AOL 3.0
GV TP Plantium Modem
Nice to meet you all,
Mark

Hi Mark. Early 1.x versions of RD were extensions. Try RD 2, which is a
control panel, before giving up. Also, adding 8 or 16MB of inexpensive
real RAM (see LEM swap list for bargains) may make your new Mac
experience much more pleasant!

Cheers,

From: William Hatchell [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My Quadra 640AV recently expired and I'd like to move as many of the working
components from it to my LC475 as possible. I began by maximizing RAM using
modules from the Quadra. Next, I'd like to know how to replace the LC040
processor of the 475 with the faster 040 processor from the Quadra and just
how to deal with the tall heat sink which I'm told may not allow for the LC
case to close. Any other components transferable like VRAM? Thanks very
much!

Bill

All the LC475 cases here have closed fine over the 68040's heatsink.
